Tonight Show cuts staff; Jay Leno takes large pay cut, reports say

Published August 18, 2012

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES –  Published reports say The Tonight Show has laid off about two dozen workers and host Jay Leno has taken a large pay cut to save the jobs of other staffers.

The moves are part of a restructuring to save money at NBC. NBC Universal imposed the cutbacks Friday, according to reports in The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times. Both newspapers cited an unnamed person familiar with what happened.

The layoffs and Leno's salary concessions were first reported by Deadline Hollywood, a website that tracks the entertainment industry.

NBC Universal declined comment.

The network has been losing money, increasing the pressure to cut expenses under corporate parent Comcast Corp.

A spokesman for Leno says the late-night show host did what he thought was necessary to protect his staff.

FYI, this is a good week to tune in to Conan! They're celebrating 20 years of Conan and showing clips of great stuff going all the way back to his Late Night days. http://www.teamcoco.com has also gained temporary access to some old bits. (I highly recommend "Conan and Andy Dub a Japanese Anime.")

And Pete Holmes' show is really good too. Conan produced it, I believe.

I can't stand Pete Holmes. Whenever he's on Doug Loves Movies, I just skip the episode. I even skipped last week's episode of Comedy Bing Bong.

Him on DLM is the worst way to experience him. If you haven't, try some of his actual stand up, or him on his own show (go for one with someone you really like as the guest).

I haven't listened to the CBB ep with him yet, but I doubt he is as disruptive there.

I think he's okay when he prepares jokes ahead of time.  If he tries to improv any jokes, it is just horrible.  It's not funny the first time, but he keeps driving it into the ground, then he laughs at himself.
