Give Me Book Recommendations!
« on: February 12, 2009, 12:35:24 PM »

Fiction, non-fiction, any genre.  I'm tired of endlessly browsing through Amazon.  :)

Well, apparently you already know about the ASoIaF series, so I'll skip to the next one:

The Dresden Files series, by Jim Butcher.

Book 1: Storm Front

Don't listen to Jinto's evil Socialist plot.  Here is a wholesome American story

A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin (Epic Fantasy)
The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell (Historical Fiction)
Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook (Military Fantasy)
Old Man's War by John Scalzi (Military Sci-Fi)

...of those, Cornwell's series is the shortest (at three volumes) and also the only "finished" one. I'd start there.

The Dresden Files series, by Jim Butcher.

How much different/better is the books to the series? I'm intruiged by the premise, but the execution of the TV series wasn't great.

The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell (Historical Fiction)
Chronicles of the Black Company by Glen Cook (Military Fantasy)

The Winter King sounds decent.  There's a collection of the Black Company books on Amazon, are they all worth a read?

Better and fairly different, no form for Bob for one thing, just a voice.

Harry Turtledove is a pretty good author if you like alternate history and have a little patients since it takes a while to start moving (but once it does you do not want to put it down).

I hear Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy have some great books out, though you probably have never heard of them.  ;D

The TV series really screwed things up ( big surprise eh? ) changing all sorts of details from the books. His vehicle was wrong, Murphy was wrong, Bob was wrong, the uncle was wrong, Morgan was wrong... I mean damn near all the details from the books got changed.

I still watched it, but it was all wrong. The books are vastly superior ( as is often the case ).
