Real Genius 2!
« on: December 30, 2006, 10:57:32 PM »
According to Ain't It Cool Val Kilmer is in talks for a sequel to Real Genius.  It is one of my favorite movies from my childhood, so I'm hoping that it actually goes into production.  I know it has the potential to be a really poor idea, but I hope that is a risk the studios are willing to take.

Studios aren't taking a risk with a sequel.  They don't really care if the sequel tarnishes the reputation of the original as long as the sequel makes money, which it usually does if the original wasn't a flop.  The risk takers are the creative people involved who are throwing their reputations on the line.

I bet they make Kilmer the "Laslo" character and mentor type.

But Real Genius is a dvd I still need to pick up.

I wonder what other cutting edge technology they are going to showcase in this new movie... I mean lasers are out obviously..

Maybe they will focus on some manner of blogging technology that runs on cheap easy to produce technology that the government wants to secretly use to control the minds of the youth of America.

Scratch that... MySpace.

I caught that movie on one of the movie channels a while back. It brought back allot of memories from when I was younger.

"...how about that time I caught you alone, in your room, naked with a bowl of jello?"

Its about the only movie that Val has done, that I enjoyed.

I'm a fan of Val Kilmer.  He's made some great movies: Top Secret, Spartan, Ghosts in the Darkness, Willow...  His role in Entourage was hilarious, too.  Almost as good as Gary Busey's.

Plus, he starred in a musical version of the Ten Commandments!  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489853/

I agree, I really like some of Val's roles, especially Tombstone.  I have to admit, he hasn't done a movie I have actually liked in quite some time though.

I saw that particular DVD on the shelf at Walmart and my brain nearly exploded.

It's kind of an odd choice for a sequel though, surely? I mean, I love "Real Genius" but I didn't think it was hugely popular or anything, and it's 20 years old. Ah well, I should be pleased.

He actually has done some good stuff, but its very low key anymore.  The Salton Sea was good but you could spot it on HBO for a while.

Val was definitely weird in the 90s, but he's kinda mellowed out now.

He was really funny as the Sherpa in Entourage. I think it was episode #207.
And I liked him as Doc Holiday and he was good in Heat too (except that movie was way, way, way too long)

I don't know, though, about another Real Genius movie. Seems he might be relapsing back into weirdness.

Oh Snap! I forgot about Top Secret! That was a good one too.
Gost in the Darkness was not good for me. I walked out of the theater on that one.

Isn't it cool to know that Val Kilmer and Michael Gough would work together again many years later in Batman Forever?!
