See as far as Asian books on a single subject go, I'd recommend people read The Book of Tea before The Art of War. But then, I love tea :)

Not everybody has time to read. When I was pushing 30, I was getting ready for Carousel.

I'm a voracious reader, and a librarian.  Over 30.

I've read two.  The Tipping Point and Lord of the Flies.

List seems a bit pretencious to me.
I don't see race.  People tell me I'm white and I believe them because I watch Antiques Roadshow.

I think it would take me more than 30 years to get through War and Peace alone.
I've only read a few on this list, I remember To Kill A Mockingbird was really good.
The first one, Siddhartha, I've never heard of, but it sounds like the worst kind of pretentious nonsense that I hate: the idea that age and experience is EVERYTHING.

Screw that list. Watchmen is a book everyone should read before they are 30.

Doesn't it feel more like the columnist who wrote this is saying "these are some of the books I read before I was 30, look at how smart I am"?

It's also a bit like how they imagine culture to be in the 24th century, nothing but classical music really.

Bitch, please. I read that shit in high school. The last thirty pages are about as dry as dry gets.

I think that should read:

Tolstoy was not untalented but there were so many significantly better Russian writers.

Well, I'm 38 and I've got a doctorate in American literature, and I've read 15 of the books.  Yeah, it's an essentially random selection, though I'd certainly recommend the ones on it that I have read.  It don't get better than Catch-22 and Lolita.
