Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame
« on: December 13, 2006, 07:58:17 PM »
I was inspired by the Guilty Pleasures thread to bring this up.  Just read online that the next group of 5 inductees to the Hall will be announced on Jan. 8, 2007 and come from this list of 9 nominees: Chic, Dave Clark 5, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M., Patti Smith, The Stooges, Joe Tex and Van Halen.
Other than some really questionable "rock and roll" credentials for some of these nominees, I'm surprised at how hard they try to have an extremely broad spectrum for their possible choices, but this thread should be about who you think the Hall have screwed over the most; or who you think belongs in the hall much more than any of these acts and you can't take the hall seriously because your favorite acts haven't been inducted??
Personally,  I can't believe neither Genesis, Yes or Kate Bush are in the hall.
    Your choices??

I'd have to see a list before I started complaining about who should be in the HOF.  Though the following should be in there already:

Black Sabbath
Metallica
The Sex Pistols
Deep Purple
Little Richard
Led Zeppelin
Queen
The Beatles
The Who

I have a better question: Why the hell is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland? ??? I guess it the decision-making process was similar to deciding where the US capital should be - instead of deciding which of a number of cities would be best they just picked on that had little else going for it.

I don't really care who gets inducted. This is just another of the dozens of awards the recording industry have invented to pat themselves on the back.

As for rock & roll credentials, I think it's virtually impossible to define "rock & roll." There's no reason blues, jazz, fok, funk, disco, reggae, or hip hop acts shouldn't be included, since they could all be considered as influential on rock music if not as rock. And since I don't see a legitimate hip hop hall of fame happening for a long long time, go Grandmaster Flash!

I'd have to see a list before I started complaining about who should be in the HOF.  Though the following should be in there already:

Black Sabbath

The Sex Pistols

Queen

Wasn't the Sex Pistols' biggest influence on music giving kids the idea that you could still have a punk band even if you suck?

I don't particularly like The Sex Pistols either, but I think their influence on music is undeniable.  Even if it was crap!  ;D

Not true. I'm far from being a punker, but neither The Clash, nor The Ramones sucked. Then The Sex Pistols came along and ruined punk. Later it got a little better, then bands like Green Day and Blink-182 ruined it again.

I got a big kick out of some Punk "authority" who said that Green Day "Is NOT Punk!!!", acting all offended at the notion that someone would call them "Punk". They all suck equally.   ;D

And where do Blink 182 get off acting all pussy? What a buncha girlies.  *All the... small things....    ::)

  R.E.M.

Ha! that's great, Peter Buck hates the idea of the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame and says eventually everyone will be in it

also, to me, the Clash created pop-punk

I'm pretty sure all the bands in mrbasehart's list are already in the Hall.  It's a very lengthy list.
The primary "rule" of membership is that your first recording was at least 25 years ago so a number of mentioned groups just haven't been around long enough.  But there are acts that have been overlooked and several of them have advocates looking for their induction, like Steven VanSandt (sp?) from Springsteen's band and The Sopranos has been pushing for the Dave Clark 5, a largely forgotten band from the first British Invasion that had a number of hit singles and even a movie "Havin' a Wild Weekend" (British title "Catch us if You Can") directed by John Boorman of "Deliverance", "Zardoz" and "Excalibur".

Like, where are the Kiss fans?

Anyone who cares what bands are on the RnR HoF should stop pretending that music matters to them. It's an institution that has proven its irrelevance from day one and will never honor most of the true pioneers and groundbreakers of music, instead opting to induct primarily safe, bland and populist mainstream musicians. At this point, being voted into the RnR HoF should pretty much be considered an insult.

On the old boards I used to haunt we'd have psychos (aka fans) whining and hollering and petitioning that the Monkees weren't in the HOF.  Every year we'd have some petition or the other that they were going to get 100 signatures on (like the HOF cares).  They've pretty much been blacklisted, as they should be.

I personally think the HOF is stupid but not because they won't let the Monkees in.  It's pretty much the same with the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" which I've also had some dealings with.  It's more about making the "award" more important and what you can bring to the "award" than it is an honor to be chosen.

And yes, I used to hang out on Monkees boards...heck, I run Monkees board :-)  They were pretty funny when I was a kid (in the 80s, I'm not that old) and I honestly think their TV show was groundbreaking.  Their music, however...

Their movie, Head, is pretty cool too.

It'll be about 20 years before Coldplay, Death Cab, or Keane would be elligible. Coldplay are probably a shoo-in though.
