Peter Boyle RIP
« on: December 13, 2006, 10:35:16 AM »
It's a sad day. Actor Peter Boyle has passed away at 71. Here's the news story link http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/am-boyleobit1213,0,4889956.story?coll=ny-news-columnists

He was a funny, class act guy. Young Frankenstein, Yellowbeard, Taxi Driver (well ok not comedic but still) and perhaps my favorite performance, as Cylde Bruckman in one of the very best X Files episodes ever. Won a well deserved Emmy for that one.

Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

His speech at the end of Young Frankenstein always had me in tears when I was a kid. He was able to bring out so much heart in that role, I always looked up to him after that.

I will always know him as Frank of "ELR"-- very funny character.  Prayers to his family.

Peter Boyle single-handedly managed to make a funny show of the otherwise unbearable Everybody Loves Raymond. He'll be missed.

Didn't like Young Frankenstein, but I thought he was great in Hammett.

Me either, but as Frank he once dressed up that way in a Halloween episode of ELR (which I find pretty funny, actually); the audience loved it. He showed such a good sense of humor about the whole thing!

I understand people not enjoying the basically stupid later Mel Brooks movies, but what's not to like about Young Frankenstein?

On the other hand, Everybody Loves Raymond is the kind of sitcom I can't even stand to watch - two people who claim to love each other, but have zero communication skills, continually deceive each other, and seem to have no respect for each other's feelings. You can just tell Ray knocked up Debra and felt obligated to marry her. Now they're stuck in a loveless marriage for the kids' sake. Those kids are going to be emotionally stunted pathological liars. I can watch that show in real life, thank you very much. But Peter Boyle was hysterical. He made no bones about his disdain for everybody. Honesty is funny, deceitfulness is not.

It's a show.  It's a movie.  Let's not get off-track here... a man is dead, and I am of the opinion this should remain an appreciation thread.

Relax.

Well said. I meant to applaud him for helping me enjoy a show I otherwise couldn't stand, but I just couldn't avoid the opportunity to hate on ELR. But Peter Boyle was an excellent actor, both dramatic and comedic, and was the reason I often found myself watching the show anyway. I'm sad to have lost him.

I remember seeing "Joe" in the theater, but I have no idea if it's available on DVD. Something to research, I guess.

Just checked Amazon, it is on DVD.  1970,  Susan Sarandon must be a kid in it, and directed by John G. Avildsen.

Why did you have to mention Yellowbeard?  I'm sure he would have preferred to have that one left out of his obituary.

I thought Yellowbeard was funny and it also puts him in direct contact with a Python, therefore making him an honorary Python. I would like to think he'd appreciate that.
