Black Mesa Trailer Released, Fanboy Bladders Follow
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:41:12 PM »
Black Mesa is a completely fan-made remake of the original Half-Life.  It uses the Source engine from Half-Life 2, and completely new assets to bring the graphical quality up to the level of the sequel.  They've been working on it since 2004, and have finally released a trailer, which looks frankly phenomenal.

Very cool stuff, and a testament to the power of nerdy fans.

That looks pretty awesome.  Is it going to be the exact same game as Half Life, or have they added anything to it?

Based on what's in the trailer, it looks like they're adhering very tightly to the original.  Sounds like they're using most of the original effects and voice acting, too.

Oh, and it will be free to anyone with a Steam account and any Source engine game.

That looks in-fucking-credible.

Half-Life was a milestone of gameplay, design, and storytelling. It will be nice to play it again with updated graphics and effects... I'm sure it will be even more amazing running on a suped up engine.

I had a hunt round but couldn't find a definite answer: is this PC only? The Steam-offer suggests that yes but I'm curious if there're rumours of a port at any point.

I doubt there will be a port, I think it would just be way to difficult and expensive for anyone to figure out how to port it over and distribute it.

I don't see how it would be anything but, have any other fan collective projects gone through console certification processes?

As someone who has been following this from day one: There is all original voice acting (about 2 years ago they had a casting call on their site) and too my knowledge all the sound effects are original (don't quote me on that one).

With the quality of this game I wouldn't be surprised if very soon they get a knock on their "door" and Valve says, "Welcome to Valve!" The BMS team deserves that.

Well, they did a damned fine job of it.  That, "Good morning, Mr. Freeman," sounds nearly identical.

Oh, this isn't an official release? Ah. In which case, kudos to the developers.

Now they just need a bunch of Kleiner clones running around and getting themselves killed.

Well, Counter-Strike ended up getting an official release back in the day (and didn't some of the guys end up with jobs at Valve?). So I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up in boxes sometime not too long after release, and then a little later on the consoles. If the game itself is as well put together as the shots you see in the trailer, it's going to be pure gold.

What's the difference between this and Half Life Source?

Quote from: BLack Mesa FAQ
Black Mesa was built and founded on the basis that Half-Life: Source was inadequate as the Source engine port of Half-Life, regardless of the intentions of VALVe Software.

They switched to the same engine used in the Orange Box.

Half Life Source looks like a big bowl of ass.
