NETFLIX
« on: December 10, 2006, 10:24:46 AM »
Is anybody else finding that the more Rifftrax they watch, the more screwed up their Netflix Recommendations are getting? Today I logged on and saw the words "Based on your interest in Top Gun, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and Star Wars: Phantom Menace..." and desperately feared for my internet reputation.

You're supposed to rate the movies you get.  If you rate certain movies negatively then it'll help your recommendations.

You were recommended Top Gun, Island Of Dr. Moreau and Phantom Menace? Oh no! Netflix thinks you like RiffTrax!

I guess this gives us an idea of how many people are using Netflix for RiffTrax.

Or maybe it's a good way to determine what movies would make good Rifftrax. Maybe Legend would rock as a Rifftrax.. :^)

I'm not speaking to Netflix right now, not since it made me buy Point Break.

Mine are mostly pretty accurate, despite the Rifftrax videos. I guess it's because I've rented and rated so many movies.  I rate every one I return.  In my top 10, there are 3 Muppets/Fraggle Rock videos, which I don't understand because I don't think I've ever rented a Muppet movie from them and I only rate the movies I rent (maybe they read the thread here about the Muppets :)). Interestingly enough, my #3 recommendation is Firefly, which I've never seen but a lot of you guys seem to enjoy.  Monty Python also makes an appearance and some anime, I guess because I like animation...but not Japanimation.

Blade Runner is on there at around #10, which I think is Rifftrax material.  MST3k is 11...again, I've never rented MST3k from them so they must know I like bad movies, kind of sad!  The Blues Brothers, which I actually like, is 12.  Then there are about 6 "Red Green: Stuffed and Mounted" which I've never heard of and Red Dwarf, which I don't particularly like.

I may rent Firefly someday but I don't think I'm renting some weird Canadian comedy.

Ahhh yes, Red Green, the King of Public Access.  It's not on Public Access, but it feels like it should be.  It'd do great there.

Just rent Firefly already. But if I may make a suggestion, skip the 2-hour pilot episode and watch episode 2, The Train Job - which Joss moved up in the production order to act as a second pilot- first. The pilot throws way too much unnecessary info at you and really drags. Wait until you've watched a couple eps before you watch the pilot. Now move it to the top of your queue! You'll thank me.

Anyone else notice that lately (like last 4 months or so) Netflix changeouts have been running slower?

Or is it just me?
Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

No, it's not just you.  This is likely their magnificent response to Blockbuster Online.

I was thinking about this the other day. When Rifftrax first came out I wish I could have been there when they realized they had no more copies of Roadhouse to give out. What a terrifying notion.

I noticed that Peerflix has Point Break listed.

Has anyone tried http://peerflix.com?  I've always been on Netflix...

That looks interesting, but i probably wouldn't want to do it.  You have to trade in your own DVDs to get others, availability of title depends on users.  Seems to me it would be difficult to get anything but big name titles.
