(360) NXE Time....
« on: November 18, 2008, 11:21:48 AM »
Well, I logged onto XBox Live last night to see if the new Rock Band tracks were up, and lo and behold, "A System Update Is Required." I start the download and, yep, it's the new Xbox dashboard, aka, the New Xbox Experience.

So far I've played with it for about a half an hour. Created an Avatar that looks vaguely like me. Navigated through the Marketplace a bit. Got annoyed that the "Browse by games played" option is gone. Noticed that there's now a "Music Games" tab in the marketplace. Woot. That will save time. (BTW: There's a Hendrix 3-pack out today for GH:WT.) Haven't tried to install a game yet, but will later. I did take a look at the Community Created games though and downloaded a couple. I'll probably try the Netflix option later tonight.

My main complaint? Well, it still seems slow navigating around. I don't know it's because XBL was getting hammered by other people downloading the new package, or because it was Tuesday morning or what. (And a speed tip: For quick navigation, hit the "Xbox" button in the middle for a condensed menu.) But it looks kinda neat. Hopefully Home will look as nice, if they ever bother to get around to releasing it...

(My gamer tag, BTW, is still MattBl. Or Prinny1 for the PSN types. Not that I ever play online there...)

I'll have to get that later.  Thanks for the reminder.  I wonder if Netflix will work over here...?

Sadly most people won't be able to see this until tomorrow (myself included).

You have to have a Netflix account, so I doubt it.

So why not get one? All you need is the one day out plan.

Netflix isn't in the UK.  I might be able to sign up through XBox, but I won't find out until I go on there later.  :)

Compound, you might look through your "Quick Launch" menu - all of the games I've played are available there.

For the marketplace, or just the achievements? (Or did they add a marketplace link to the achievement page? If so, objection withdrawn.)

How does the Netflix thing work... for those of you who have it? As i understand it, they offer different subscription plans that relate directly to the amount of DVDs that you can rent per month. At least that's how it works for the "physical" rentals. Does that limit somehow carry over to streaming movies on the 360?

I may finally bite the bullet and subscribe to Netflix. But can i purchase the cheapest Netflix subscription and get unlimited streaming movies through my 360? And if i do sign up should i say that one of you recommended me... i assume they have a rewards program for shilling their service, right?

Compound - for the marketplace I guess? I don't know if that's the same thing because I never used it. But basically when you hit the X button on your controller, click to the "QuicK Launch" menu and you'll see all the games you've played... I think that's similar to what you were describing?

Rude, I think you can get unlimited streaming Netflix Instant with every plan except the very basic / cheapest. I think the cheapest one that offers unlimited streaming is $8 a month, but I could be wrong.

From what I understand they have a bit a variation in their plans depending on how you do it. First... they have their standard send me a disc in the mail. Which you can have one out or more at a time. Depending on the price you want to pay. The watchnow service is included for all the plans (no limitations on how much you watch).  Quality is near dvd quality (not surround)... but the starz specific movies seem to be lesser quality. Netflix has a Roku player that you can buy which uses the watchnow to play on your TV, but they plan on providing exclusive videos not available in the watch now. The Xbox apparently will also be giving some exclusive videos not in either of the above. This is all what is being said between the companies right now.

According to xbox you have to have a gold subscription.. and the one out dvd rental should work. They've never said any limitation there.

Just remember that Netflix only has a fraction of their catalog available for streaming.  You'll still get some fair amount of use out of it.  But just don't expect that every movie in the Netflix catalog will be available to stream online.
