iJust Finished Watching

iDon't know about you, but iHaven't got the time to sift through dozens and dozens of comments pages and individual threads to find out which iRiffs are top quality.  Hence this thread, which iHope will become your one-stop shop for capsule reviews of iRiffs.  (And now iWill stop with the iStuff before iGet shot.)

Each time you take a chance on a new iRiff, do us all a favor and drop in here to let everyone know what you thought.  A couple of sentences will probably suffice, though you're welcome to write a more comprehensive review if you like.

Be honest (but not brutal -- remember, iRiffers are just geeks like you and me) and this will become a useful resource for finding new iRiffs that are worth your time and money -- not to mention directing some new traffic to the tracks that really deserve it.

Good idea for a new topic.

I just watched Blame Society: Star Wars IV. Overall, very good. In fact, I think it was a much better use of Chad Vader than in Rifftrax's Episode II.

Riff Raff Theater: Tron. Excellent. Very funny throughout, reminded me of the nice riffing groove they had on Harry Potter.

Emergency Riffcast System: Super Mario Brothers. Not very good. A few good lines (OPRAH SMASH! being my favorite), but quite a few dud riffs, and LOTS of dead air. Personally, I'm of the quantity is very important school of thought on this. Because quality is more dependent on who is writing, and the time taken. Given there are no deadlines for these iRiffs, there is no excuse.

I plan on seeing D U N E next and Street Fighter (hopefully that one is better than the sample). I will report back afterward.

So far of the new iRiffs I've seen Scrivener's Wrath of Khan (that I'd seen about a year ago I think) and it was very funny, and in fact it was one of the riffs that convinced me that fan riffs could be funny and thus was partly responsible for me making my own.

Also watched Hor-Riff-Ic's Friday the 13th riff, and as I posted on their comments page it made the purchase of the movie worthwhile, and thats a big deal since I could never stand that style of horror movie.  Lots of good laughs.

I watched

Ronin's ST: TMP - Very good but the movie drags major ass. But it is a good riff and he has me sold on future riffs

Hor-riff-ic's Friday 13th - Great job. Sold on future riffs.

Tron - I only got to watch half of it because apparently my dvd copy is crap and glitched out shortly after the tank takes out the bridge. But what I heard was good. Most likely will buy more.

Later I'm going to watch the old Gamera film riff.

Just finished Blame Society's Star Wars IV riff.  Had a very slow start, a lot of the jokes hit and miss (though Chad Vader's stuff was usually pretty solid.)  It saw some definite improvement by the time Obi Wan showed up in the movie.  (BTW, awesome Alec Guinness impression.)

It was good, and I get the feeling they could get better.  I'll take a look at their next release for sure.

Watched RoninFox's Star Trek : The Motion Picture riff last night.  Good stuff, and that definitely includes the parts I didn't write. (Though they sounded more comfortable doing their own stuff, at least to me.)  There may have been timing issues here and there, but I'm never quite sure that isn't just me. (I will say that Shadow is a very effective synch-line reader.)

I will be buying more stuff from Ronin Fox Trax.  That really says all you need to know.

I bought the 90's Gamera riff yesterday. Very fun, though not perfect  :) He was knowledgeable about Gamera, and kept the anime porn jokes down to one. He did stumble on a couple lines and sort of run out of things to say near the end (or I was just getting sleepy), and I prefer riffs with multiple people, but those are minor things. With luck he does the other two films.

Hmm, you know, it would be fun to have a kid on this kind of riff ...

possibly because Gamera is friend to children?

anyway, it's no secret that I've seen Ronin's ST: TMP which is super awesome! (tell your friends then join the fanclub). I am gonna re-author riff of khan, but i probably won't watch it till the weekend. I'm also probably gonna get the star wars riff, and I want to get a short, but I need to investigate further.

Thanks, mate. I know exactly what you mean with your minor annoyances. This was my first time writing and recording a full riff, so I was experimenting with a number of different (writing and recording) techniques, so it wasn't up to my own "natural flow" yet. Think of it as Season 1 MST3K. Anyways, I think I've worked out all of the bugs, so my next riffs (I have 3 or 4 of them written and ready to record) are going to be a major step up.

Thanks for watching, and stay tuned, because the best is yet to come.

iJust finished watching someone go through and give everyone a low rating, again.

There really needs to be rules or prevention against this crap.

How about no voting?

Also, how did you "watch" someone go through and give everyone a low rating? I can check the database but how can you be certain?

Anyway, we'll try to get a handle on a more balanced voting system... we'll update here if with any progress.

Obviously I can't "watch" it happen, but i can check the website frequently* and notice when almost every riff on the list has had their rating knocked down a peg or two all in the same short time frame.

Sorry to derail the thread, but I couldn't resist with the thread title being what it is.

I don't see any way to eliminate this. Personally, I look at the 'featured iriffs' as kind of rough guide. How about posting a specific voting link (in their receipt email) only for those who purchase the iriff. This would help give a more personalized rating and keep people from just voting on what they thought of the preview.

I think this was mentioned once or twice elsewhere, but it should be set up so that you A) can't vote for your own iRiff, and B) can only vote for those iRiffs that you have purchased.

I haven't had the chance to watch any of the iRiffs yet (although I did purchase some of JoshWay's shorts off the old site, and I did see the RRT Speed riff months ago), but I might go ahead and pick up a few next time I make a Rifftrax purchase.  I won't be paying any mind to the voting on the main page when making my decision, instead going off of comments made here by folks whose opinions I trust.
