I don't know if you count comics, but I recommend... well, a lot, so I guess I better choose just one. Gee, this is tough. I guess considering the books listed so far, something actiony might be refreshing. Still, to play it safe, let's keep it smart. Since it's both a great read and a quick read, I'll go with Grant Morrison's (and I'm a sucker for almost anything he's written) sci-fi animal story We3, a sort of bizarre cross between homeward bound and bloody killer robot movies. Talking animals have never been creepier.
If you aren't accepting comic book submissions, then I have a couple of Sci-fi short stories to recommend:
"It's a Good Life" (which became a very popular Twilight Zone episode and stil remains creepy in prose form) and "The Sandkings" which is a horror sci-fi story with a style that reminds me a lot of those karmic "snap endings" from those old Tales from the Crypt comics.
