Favourite TV Show?
« on: December 04, 2006, 08:47:04 PM »
What's your favourite TV show of the past and of the present? Not including MST3k, of course  ;)

Past:

Red Dwarf.  Through some odd kind of osmosis, I have absorbed an ungodly amount of this show.  The first 5 seasons are by far the best, and I regularly worship at the feet of Chris Barrie.  I got an A in Drama at secondary school for playing Rimmer in a staged episode of Red Dwarf, too!  Special mentions go to the last few seasons of Star Trek: TNG and The West Wing.

Present:

It's a tough choice, but I'm going to go with Veronica Mars.  Kristen Bell is amazing in the show, as is her support cast.  It's the only show I watch immediately after downloading "acquiring" it.  I also really like The Closer with Kyra Sedgewick and House with Hugh Laurie.

Yikes. I dunno if I can pick a favorite show. There's so many factors. Futurama, maybe, since it never got the chance to go downhill. Homicide: Life On The Street was the best cop show TV drama ever, but it's pretty emotionally draining. The first 3 seasons of Buffy. The last 3 seasons of Deep Space 9. Any X-Files episodes written by Darin Morgan or Vince Gilligan. Batman The Animated Series. The Tick. I seem to recall The Simpsons being very good once upon a time...  ;)

As for current shows, I don't actually watch TV, so I dunno. Robot Chicken or Reno 911, I guess. I turn to television for my stupid comedy. I'm just getting into the new Battlestar Galactica. The miniseries was excellent.

Any X-Files episodes written by Darin Morgan...

"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" was one of the best things ever to appear on television.
Snowhead the Blue Reindeer gave me all the presents in the world.

Darin Morgan wrote The X-Files episodes Humbug, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, Jose Chung's From Outer Space and the Millennium episode Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense (a nice send-up of Scientology). Vince Gilligan wrote Small Potatoes (starring Darin Morgan) and Bad Blood, among others. The X-Files was at its best when it was funny. And these guys wrote the best funny X-Files.

I love Futurama too and the Family Guy while we're talking about animation.

My current favorite show is probably House.  I really can't think of anything else I watch regularly.  Until this year, I was too busy with school to really watch much TV.  I started watching Lost when it first premiered but I missed so many episodes that it's pointless to watch now. I liked it though.  I was going to watch Heros but I had a hard internship the month it premiered so I was working my butt off.  I hear it's pretty good.  Maybe I'll catch it in the repeats.  Monk is another show I like, even though it's a bit cheesy and predictable.  I did catch some of Psyche last year too and I liked it but I don't know if I'll like it enough to watch it regularly.

Now that I don't have to challenge my brain much, I can turn it to soup by watching more TV, surfing the Internet and downloading rifftrax!  YAY!

Homicide: Life on the Street before it became the Did You Kill Luther Mahoney? show was my favorite show.  Also Live At 5 With Sue Simmons and Chuck Scarborough.

At present, The Wire has been the best thing on television for the last four years.  Followed closely by Deadwood (late and lamented though it may be).
I'm all out for kicks...and every inch of me spells EXCITEMENT!

Vince Gilligan wrote...Bad Blood, among others.

That was the first time I ever saw Luke Wilson.  I started seeing him in movies and went, "Hey!  That's the redneck sheriff from the X-Files!"

Other celebrity introductions:
"Deep Throat" - Seth Green
"D.P.O." - Giovanni Ribisi and Jack Black

I know there's others.
Snowhead the Blue Reindeer gave me all the presents in the world.

Current favorite is definitely NUMB3RS!!
I love the characters, and the cast that makes them so loveable.
Plus the two recurring female characters are smokin' hot!!!
The events in each episode can be a little bit repetitive, but the stories usually have enough to keep you guessing, plus there are bouts of silliness that keep things fun. Judd Hirsch proves his legendary talent as the main characters' father. He is a revelation.

Favorite short-lived TV show: Firefly. I didn't watch it while it aired, but after it was suggested to me by my boss, I watched the complete series on DVD and fell in love. I mourned its passing. I still mourn.

Chuck Scarborough is the man.  :D

Mike Kellerman is also the man. He got screwed.

"The Critic" and "Greg the Bunny" are my favorite short-lived shows.  (I know Greg's on IFC now.  It's not the same.)  I'm also dying to see "Strange Luck" brought to DVD at some point.  Just so I can find out if it was as good as I remember.  The last episode tied in with the X-Files, actually.

Since we seem to be steering the discussion toward short-lived shows, does anybody remember Now & Again from 1999-2000? Family man John Goodman is killed in an accident and they stick his brain in Eric Close's custom-built body. Dennis Haysbert sends him on covert missions while he tires to secretly get in touch with his wife and daughter. They never renewed it for a second season. Glen Gordon Caron of Moonlighting and now Medium created the show and it was pretty damn good as I recall. I think it was on Fridays, though, so it was doomed.

If I had cable, I would. But if I had cable I'd never leave the house.
