Favorite movie from your birth year?
« on: October 18, 2019, 09:17:02 AM »

1961 - Last Year at Marienbad

It's also the year Viridiana, Yojimbo, The Innocents, One-Eyed Jacks and Breakfast at Tiffany's was released

The Oscar winner - West Side Story

I was only a baby and unable to appreciate any of this at the time.  Marienbad would have gone right over my head.  ;)

Oh, Star Wars. Don't even have to think about it.

The Thing by John Carpenter.  My favourite Carpenter movie and one of the great and still visually impressive horror movies.  Plus, berserk Wilford Brimley (who was younger then than Tom Cruise is now.  Absorb that.)

I guess the one I've watched the most has got to be Dr. Strangelove.

Others I like: A Shot In The Dark, A Fist Full Of Dollars, Goldfinger, Fail-Safe.

Nice stuff there.

I was trying to remember where I was when I saw all of those, did I see it in theaters, on HBO or VHS? The only one I have a clear memory of was uncle Craig and his wife taking me and my sibs to see Star War, that was fun. My uncle was cool, funny, played the guitar, great guy - so it was a treat to spend time with him.

The Thing I remember for what a super freak out it was, great fun... but where did I watch it?

Out of curiosity I went to Letterboxd to see what future riffed movies were birthed in 1961, and found Mothra, Gorgo, Reptilicus, Rocket Attack U.S.A. Bloodlust, Phantom Planet, The Devil's Hand, Neptune Men, Herc a/t Captive Women, and the great Beast of Yucca Flats

as well as many shorts, such as The Prom: It's a Pleasure

Depending on the day of the week I would say it is either Nashville, The Passenger, or Monty Python & the Holy Grail. Today I'm going with The Passenger.
You know, if the space man puma thing turns out to be the correct religion, I for one will be very surprised.

Several to choose, but Planet of the Apes wins.
A true underrated Tim Burton classic.

JK.

About the terrible Tim Burton flick. Not about the real one. Yes, I'm old.

On the serious side of things the Italian masterpiece I Knew Her Well, as well as Varda's Le Bonheur, and Fellini's Juliet of the Spirits.

On the less serious side of things What's New Pussycat? and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (it was the year of the pussy)

Also: Frankenstein meets the Space Monster!

I've only got 22 films logged as watched from the year of my birth - Not surprising since the 80s is my least favourite decade for movies.

Probably Popeye, although I did really enjoy Fellini's City of Women, The Fog and The Shining.

FINE

Interesting. I don’t like musicals as a general rule, yet three musicals that I do happen to enjoy were released in my birth year, and one of them is probably my favorite of the year: True Stories, a Talking Heads film. Little Shop of Horrors and Labyrinth also came out that year, which I enjoy. But I probably enjoy Clockwise, a John Cleese movie more than those two. Top Gun, Highlander, Short Circuit, and Aliens all get honorable mentions for being cheesy and a bit over the top.

Stand by Me also came out that year, but I can’t bring myself to care much about that film. It was fine.
