Comic Collectors? Large collection? How do you store them?

Current everything is just stacked up in my bedroom since I have no shelves or drawers, I really need to do something about that!

My gun safe has a separate lock box and extensive dehumidification devices.  I keep the valuable stuff in there.  Ironically, even the Golden Age stuff isn't nearly as valuable as an average IPSC-tuned handgun.

Yeah more parents need to throw the damn things away so that ours become more valuable.   I have 6 of the official drawerboxes now and I have loaded them up. I don't really like them. They don't sit all that even and there is a lot of friction on the drawer bottom. Maybe if I wasn't going into the drawers all that often they might be ok, but for constant use... eh....  I think I am just going to pony up the money and do this:



That is roughly 372 books in one file cabinet drawer. It is an expensive alternative but it seems that it will work the best.

It looks just like a filing cabinet, but compared to the cost of those boxes, a filing cabinet would be significantly more expensive. At least as an initial outlay.

Yeah it is a legal sized filing cabinet. For the good quality ones that will take the weight and use run about $150 to $200. For my collection I would need about 5 to start with.

I guess I got lucky with my filing cabinet then.  Cost me next to nothing, as it was ex-office equipment, and it fits just as perfect as that one.

I have been perusing craigslist and what not for cheap ones but no real luck.

I bag and board, but one guy, who posts on the Super Hero Hype forums, actually has a book binding company bind his comics into his own TPB, but with a nice leather cover.

Huh. Okay. I wouldn't think that would work, since there's no "binding" room in a comic book. You'd be cutting it close to the borders and possibly ruin some of the artwork. Also, that is insane.

It doesn't look too bad to me, but that's just me. I kind of like it, and when I finally find employment, and finish a few other projects that require cash, I might just try it.

That is kind of cool. If you own the company you may as well use it like that. It is not like any of these comics are going to be worth anything in the long run. You may as well use them as you like.

The guy on SHH says that he can get it done for 15 bucks in a place in Waco, Texas.

I've been reading up on this binding thing in that forum and I have to say this looks pretty sharp to me.  There are a lot of folks there who have done this with dozens or hundreds of volumes; they look great on bookshelves, and you can actually read them without digging through multiple boxes.  I think this is going on my "to do" list for 2009.  I can think of a bunch of comics unlikely to ever be collected that I'd like to have--Blue Devil, Captain Carrot, Atari Force.

This also offers a neat opportunity to design your own projects.  I'd like to get together all the comics written by Harlan Ellison over the years--there have been a handful, for different companies--and get them bound together.

I try to go through mine regularly and just save the ones I REALLY want to keep.  But since I don't buy anything except the series I really like there's not much parsing to do.  I collect a couple of books like POWERS in TPB but that's only for books whose release is so irregular that it makes more sense that way.  I can't be patient enough for others to come out in TPB and some books I read like Birds or Prey might never coem out in TPB.
RIght now I have it winnowed down to one long box and maybe another pile on my dresser but ultimately I think I should probably get a filing cabinet or at least a different bed that will fit  a couple of long boxes underneath of it.

Doesn't sound all that economical when I start thinking of all hte bindings I would want.  I may stick with a two drawer filing cabinet.
