I think I like the precedent that this might set for competitive Pokemon. Up until now, to participate in the competitive events sponsored by TPCI, you had to have the newest version of the main series game. That meant you had to have Alpha Sapphire or Omega Ruby, Ultra Sun/Moon. With BDSP being partially made by another studio and faithfully reconstructed, it could mean that SWSH are going to be the main games for competitive play until gen 9. The style of BDSP is so different and it's goals are clearly more focused on the nostalgia that it would mean there wouldn't be any room for the generational gimmicks.
It's purely conjecture at this point, of course. I would be thrilled if that happens, though. I've never pretended to like gen 4, and I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of essentially being forced to play through it all again, especially so soon after suffering through Plat last year.
