Does the DVD include the b&w version as well?

Yes. Every Legend Films DVD has included the black and white versions of the films they colorize.
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

...except for this one, apparently.

No B&W. I wondered about that as well, but in the intro Elfman does, he explains that he originally intended it to be in color...I can't say that is definitely the reason why the B&W isn't included, but it makes sense to me. I'm the same way with colorization most of the time, so I've always appreciated the remastered B&W we've done...but hey, if it's what the creator wants *shrugs*

I'm sure if Richard Elfman had wanted to include the B&W version (and it could've been put on the disc) it would've been.

Trust me though, the colorized version is awesome. It looks like it was shot in color.

Oh well.

The Fantomas DVD has a lot of cool extras that aren't carried over to the Legend Films edition, like the audio commentary by Elfman and cowriter Matthew Bright, so it's probably a good idea to own both versions anyway, no matter what people may feel about colorization (since this one is director-approved, I'm all for it).

I'm thinking I'll at least rent it in B&W if I can find it before snatching up the colorized version.  At least to see what the improvement level is.

I'm on the fence with this one. I wouldn't hesitate to click the add to cart button if there was a solo commentary track from Mike, Kevin, Bill; or a combo of the three. I'll wait and see what others say about FZ and make my decision to buy based on user reviews.  :-\

You can see bits of it online, including sites like YouTube, but of course the quality suffers. Even I was surprised by the improvement. (I'm not just saying this because I work for Legend - the colorization work really is great.)

This was totally Richard Elfman's show.  He intended to release Forbidden Zone in color from the start but didn't have the budge.  Consequently he always considered the black and white release a work in progress with the hopes of adding color one day.  Today he's releasing the film through Legend Films and Rifftrax in color, the way he and Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo always envisioned it.  After Legend Films colorized Forbidden Zone, Richard commented many times that he will never again be able to sit through the film in black and white.  Therefore, he feels that putting the black and white version on this release would be a step backward.

so the Black and white version has the rifftrax?

Only when played backwards at 2.4x speed.
Any issues with the RiffTrax main page should be directed to support@rifftrax.com Attempts to engage with me directly about such matters will result in ridicule.

Although I am disappointed that some of the extras (particularly the audio commentary and documentary, which Fantoma likely owns, and the early production footage) didn't make it onto the new edition, Legend's DVD still serves as a good supplement, not a replacement for, the Fantoma edition. 8)
