Fiennes Trumps Ledger As Top Movie Villain
15 July 2008 11:59 AM, PDT

Ralph Fiennes' Lord Voldemort character in the Harry Potter films has been named the best movie villain of all time - beating Heath Ledger's The Joker into fifth place.

Ledger's performance in new Batman sequel The Dark Knight, the last movie he completed before his death in January, has been lauded by critics and tipped for an Oscar nomination.

But editors of Moviefone rank him behind Fiennes; James Earl Jones and Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader; Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West and Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in the onscreen evil stakes.

A Moviefone editor explains the decision to crown Voldemort the most dastardly, "He is the most powerful dark wizard to ever wave a wand. What's more, he schemes to dominate the whole world. Without his slithering presence, would J.K. Rowling be the best-selling author of all time? The answer, a resounding "No."

The top ten is as follows:

1: Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter - Ralph Fiennes

2: Darth Vader, Star Wars -James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen

3. Wicked Witch Of The West, The Wizard Of Oz - Margaret Hamilton

4. Hannibal Lecter, Silence Of The Lambs - Anthony Hopkins

5. Joker, The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger

6. Goldfinger, Goldfinger - Gert Frobe

7. Chigurh, No Country For Old Men - Javier Bardem

8. Hans Gruber, Die Hard - Alan Rickman

9: Max Cady, Cape Fear - Robert De Niro

10: Queen, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves - Lucille La Verne.

How can someone win for a movie that isn't out yet?!

This reminds me of the time when Firefly won best sci-fi/fantasy series ever,it's got to be a bunch of fanboys rigging the vote.

Also i am looking forward to the Dark Knight as much as anyone but i can tell you ledger isn't even going to be the best Joker ever, let alone best villain.

Isn't prejudging the performance as not being the best so far without seeing it about the same as the people prejudging it as the best?  Not saying it's going to be one way or the other, I won't know until after tomorrow.

I don't know about that. Alot of very hard to please critics are raving about Ledger's Joker, saying that he's better than Jack Nicholson's Joker because he's less cartoony and more tangible.

I would bet the Doctor wasn't thinking of Nicholson when he said that :)

After seeing the movie, IMHO, Ledger just became the best Joker. When the movie was finished, I was sad because we'll never see that Joker again because he's dead.  :(

What? Voldemort over Hans Grueber, Anton Chigurh, and Hannibal Lector? Blasphemy; those guys easily outclass Voldemort (sure, he';s a pretty good villain, but not at the level those guys were). And Ledger should've been higher, he was much more evil (in terms of straight-up villainy).

I don't understand why Darth Vader at number 3 is both James Earl Jones and Whiny McSandhater, but Joker's number 2 is only Heath Ledger

I don't know about that. I bet Sam Rockwell could do a pretty good job filling in as the Joker.

Ledger's Joker is way better then Darth Vader or anyone else on this poll.

The new Two Face should be on here too.

Oh I agree. I don't think there's enough love for Eckard's Two Face. Of course wo Face wasn't really given enough of a spotlight to shine under given his alotted screentime.

Two Face rocked, no doubt, and its obvious in retrospect that this list is meaningless junk, which isn't surprising.  Pretty much anything from imdb that isn't a cast/crew list or something falls under that category.

So far this forum is the most trustworthy internet source of lists I've found.  Most other lists I've seen on the nets tend to skew toward the flavor of the month.

Wow.  Most of those are good movies, and the ones that aren't are part of series that contain good movies, so actually ranking them is fairly subjective.  You could present a convincing argument for just about any configuration...

...except for Voldemort, who doesn't even belong on the list.  Ralph Fiennes has played him in two movies for five to ten minutes a piece.  Yeah, the idea of Voldemort as described by the other characters in previous films is scary, but I wouldn't put him on a list of greatest movie villains for what amounts to a pair of cameos.

Yeah but every scene he was in was great.

My favorite scene in the movie is when he is in the car with the gangster.
