Fiennes Trumps Ledger As Top Movie Villain
15 July 2008 11:59 AM, PDT

Ralph Fiennes' Lord Voldemort character in the Harry Potter films has been named the best movie villain of all time - beating Heath Ledger's The Joker into fifth place.

Ledger's performance in new Batman sequel The Dark Knight, the last movie he completed before his death in January, has been lauded by critics and tipped for an Oscar nomination.

But editors of Moviefone rank him behind Fiennes; James Earl Jones and Hayden Christensen's Darth Vader; Margaret Hamilton's Wicked Witch of the West and Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter in the onscreen evil stakes.

A Moviefone editor explains the decision to crown Voldemort the most dastardly, "He is the most powerful dark wizard to ever wave a wand. What's more, he schemes to dominate the whole world. Without his slithering presence, would J.K. Rowling be the best-selling author of all time? The answer, a resounding "No."

The top ten is as follows:

1: Lord Voldemort, Harry Potter - Ralph Fiennes

2: Darth Vader, Star Wars -James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen

3. Wicked Witch Of The West, The Wizard Of Oz - Margaret Hamilton

4. Hannibal Lecter, Silence Of The Lambs - Anthony Hopkins

5. Joker, The Dark Knight - Heath Ledger

6. Goldfinger, Goldfinger - Gert Frobe

7. Chigurh, No Country For Old Men - Javier Bardem

8. Hans Gruber, Die Hard - Alan Rickman

9: Max Cady, Cape Fear - Robert De Niro

10: Queen, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves - Lucille La Verne.

"Voldermart?"  What is that, some kind of evil supermarket?
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Was it a fan submission sort of vote?  Like, were people allowed to vote based on a list?  Because if that were the case, I could see a couple of Harry Potter forums sending users to the website and flooding the system with votes for Voldie.  That's how JK Rowling was ranked the best Sci Fi/Fantasy author in the UK, winning twice the number of votes as Terry Pratchett.

Or is it just as the editors say, and the list is entirely made up of Moviefone editor opinions?

I don't get how the story of the piece is the Fiennes beats Ledger.  The Dark Knight isn't even out yet, so how can we judge accurately whether he's good or not?

I see Lord Voldemort as one of the best villains of all time, but not as played by Ralph Finnes. Not by a long shot.

What I like about Voldemort is not only his amazing magical ability, but also his calculating mind. He is a very smart person, smarter than most, and he can always tell when someone lies. He uses his brains and his magical abilities to be utterly ruthless and dominating. He will do anything/kill anyone to get what he wants: everlasting life.

I suspect that is the case. When it comes to Zealotry, Harry Potter fans are immeasurable and unstoppable.

Oh come on! I'd bank my money on Heath Ledger's Joker. Voldemort is a sissy compared to the Clown Prince of Crime.
Being a genocidal maniac is not one of my turn ons.

Is it weird to hear the Safety Dance in my head watching Game of Thrones?

See, I agree. Just in terms of evil, Joker far outweighs Volde"mart"

You can't have a fair fight between a portrayal in a series of movies and a portrayal in a series of trailers.  They couldn't have waited a week or two before holding this little contest?

Except for that part where he got outwitted and killed by a cocky, fly-off-the-handle teenager. But yeah, other than that, genius... ;) :D

How could anyone vote for a person who can't pronounce his own goddamned name?

"Rafe?" Yeah, whatever.

But isn't that always the way a super-villain goes down? Some head-strong, cocky teenager with big ideals and a lot of desire comes along and bests the big cheese. It's a part of history, man.
