i am very interested to see where the escapism theme goes. I like that both Sam and Josef feel the need to escape, Josef from Nazi-ism, and Sam from....well Brooklyn. I hope to hear more about Sam in the next section.

If anyone has read 100 years of Solitude, the opening line of this novel is very similar because both opening lines feature various elements of time. I though that was neat (if kind of copying)

There's an X-Files episode about a golem?

I really should dig out my book of Yiddish Folktales.

Is is just me, or could chapter three be it's own little stand alone short story?  (The reason I ask is I'm SURE I've heard it before as it's own stand-alone story, possibly in elementary school, but when I check the copyright info it doesn't have that 'portions of this book have been previously published in a different form' disclaimer you usually see in such cases.)

I've never seen the Golem X-Files, but then the number of X-Files eps I've seen probably doesn't number in the high teens.  (I've got the DVD sets for season 1 & 2 and am slooooowly working my way through them.  How slowly?  I started in August '06 and am only up to Season 1, disc 3, episode 4.)

Overall, while I've read the book before, I'd forgotten just how much of a fan of it I am (especially since I read Chabon's The Yiddish Policeman's Union last year and was incredibly disappointed by it).  I'm also shocked at how much of the book I've forgotten - I could, if pressed, tell you a handful of plot points from throughout the book but not how they get from point a to point b.
