Title: Your favorite "gimmick" bands??
Post by: MrTorso on July 03, 2008, 11:37:33 PM
Here are some of my favorite "gimmick" bands:

All time has to be GWAR. I have seen them at least 13 times and I even brought their side project band DBX to town for the sole purpose of having my band (formed just for this gig) open for them...

Some other favorites:

Manic Hispanic: Classic punk rock tunes with the lyrics changed to be about Mexicans and Mexican culture. The members are made of guys from various L.A. bands like the Adolescents and The Cadillac Tramps and Agent Orange. Some of my favorite songs are Mommy's Little Cholo  (Social D. Mommy's Little Monster), Uncle Chato's Garden (Bad Religion's Atomic Garden), I'm So Bored With You Esse (Clash's Bored With the U.S.A.)

Who are your favorite gimmick bands?

There is a band called holyfuck I like.

"The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping, splicing, programming and the like—of that music."

I'm 100% with you on GWAR, Torso. They're the ultimate.

I'd also like to give some love to the Aquabats. If you'd take away the superhero shtick, I'd still be an enormous fan of theirs. They're my all-time favorite ska band.

I was just gonna mention Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine, but Tripe beat me to it.

KISS is sort of a gimmick band, I guess.  They would be pretty high on my list.

The Traveling Wilburys are another that would be one of my favs.

Green Jelly (AKA Green Jello)

KISS would be my #1 but even though they have a gimmick I don't concider them a gimmick band

Green Jelly (AKA Green Jello)

I still have a sealed copy of the Cereal Killer VHS before they had to change everything. When they released the CD for Cereal Killer BMG put the cd-release party invites on boxes of lime Jell-O and the actual party was at a strip club with Jell-o wrestling and free booze!

...

Bands like KISS, The Ramones, Guitar Wolf and The Misfits all sort of have a gimmick... but i don't think i'd really call 'em gimmick bands. So besides GWAR, who is obviously king... i think Metal Elvis (http://metalelvis.com/) kicks some major ass.

I went through a spell where I was into Me First & The Gimme Gimmes.  All they do is fast punk versions of songs you wouldn't expect it of....songs like Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Blowin' In The Wind, Stairway to Heaven, etc.

My favorite gimmick band by a wide margin would have to be Optiganally Yours.  Every song prominently features the Optigan, a cheap-ass keyboard from the early seventies that played pre-recorded optical discs.  The instrument is very limited and generally sounds like hell, but somehow they managed to create two albums worth of surprisingly excellent songs with it.

On a similar note, I get a kick out of The Moog Cookbook (in small doses).

Did that inspire your new Wendy Carlos avatar in some way?

Nope.  Just serendipitous coincidence.
