Title: QuipTracks: The Happening - NOW AVAILABLE
Post by: Asbestos Bill on July 03, 2008, 08:34:34 PM
(http://www.quiptracks.com/zencart/images/medium/qt000007_MED.jpg)

Synopsis:

M. Night Shyamalan drives the final nail in the coffin of his reputation for surprise endings by telling a tale with all the twists and turns of a pretzel... not the twisty kind, but the straight kind that doesn't have twists.

The trees and plants of the Northeast US, no doubt still angry over Al Gore's defeat in 2000, have begun intermittently emitting a gas that causes humans to want to kill themselves. (Hey, can you blame them? I mean, even humans have been known to do that from time to time, right?) Anyway, it's up to She (of She and Him) and Marky Mark (minus Hector the booty inspector) to protect a child-sized dress mannequin and get it to the place where the event is not happening.

Can these two adults, who are not only in touch with their inner children but have them writing all their dialog, stay a step ahead of flatulent shrubbery and skydiving construction workers all the while pulling their relationship through the toughest crisis it has ever faced? Or, more importantly, can you make it through the movie without trying to drown yourself in your soda or gouge out your eyes with Twizzlers?

Fear not. QuipTracks is here to help you through this difficult, uh, phenomenon? Occurrence? Seems like there is some other word I'm looking for here. Oh well.

If this means you're making a riff for something still in theaters, so that you can go into the theater and listen to it with an MP3 player, which I've been wanting someone to try forever, then you sir have balls.

IF that's what you're doing.

The evidence points to Invader Quirk being dead.

I mean, that's the only result from seeing that movie that many times.

Speaking of which, I've actually been deceased for almost 6 months.

No, I think they're going to do a riff for the 1941 French production of "L'opta se turnia" (Stubs on a table) starring Jean Francois P'Aldra. Powerful stuff.

That all depends on how long it stays in theaters. On the one hand, I'm constantly pissed that saps are still going to see it because we have to be secretive and quiet with our riffing. On the other I want it to stay in theaters forever.

I'm pretty depressed right now regarding this... What we've been doing is we went into the theater with voice recorders and riffed it and ended up with the audio from the movie too, which was great because we could use Sub Station Alpha's "Time to WAV" function and fill in lines riffing on the dialog and parts with sound cues. Of course there are some parts that don't have sound cues, however, so we decided to go in again and record a narrated play-by-play of what was Happening(R) on screen. This would allow us to riff the entire movie even before the DVD comes out.

So we went through the entire movie, narrating it. Then when we get home we realize that we didn't save the file. Our hope was to make a rough draft from the script alone that we could listen to in the theater to see if it was accurate. That just became less likely.

U_U...sigh

According to SmartCine.com (http://smartcine.com/blog/2008/08/12/the-happening-dvd-release-date/) (How the hell am I supposed to pronounce that?), The Happening will be released on DVD on Oct 7.  Our script is 2/3 through the movie right now. I can't say exactly how long we'll need after the DVD release to record it, but it's fair to say we should have a Happening quiptrack in early October.

Mind if I ask you a PURELY logistical question, out of curiosity?

Since recording any portion of a movie in the theatre, even the audio of the movie, is illegal and falls under piracy, wouldn't it have been easier to just go ahead and download a camera job of the movie and watch it at home as many times as you wanted? The level of illegality would have been technically the same either way.

All you would have had to do then would be to chop off or add a couple of seconds to the beginning of your recorded riff based on when the camera recording was started versus when the real 0:00:00 time on the DVD was. You could easily do that on the day of release and you could put out the riff the same day as the DVD hits store shelves.

IF I was going to do something illegal to get ahold of the contents of the movie anyway, I would have just done it that way, personally. ;)

Note: I am not condoning piracy here, I am just pointing out that either way would have essentially resulted in the same breakage of law.

We actually recorded ourselves explaining the action, and got a little background sound by accident.

We actually recorded ourselves explaining the action, and got a little background sound by accident.

Yes, I got that from your other post. But recording the audio of a copyrighted film, even accidentally, is still illegal, and still considered piracy.

And you didn't answer my question. :)
Title: Re: QuipTracks: The Happening
Post by: Invader_quirk on September 05, 2008, 07:28:31 AM
It would have been easier, yes, and we considered it, but we decided against it because we thought that using audio in the background to write a script, while technically illegal, was within the spirit of the law, while downloading our own copy of the entire film would be exactly what the law is trying to prevent, and would be supporting pirates.

Plus, we wanted to do it the hard way, cause that's just the kind of guys we are.  ;)

Thank you, guys! Our plan as of now is to stick with our own site for our main riffs, but use iRiffs to host our upcoming series, QuipTracks: The Show!, where we riff episodes of old public domain shows. We'll also have host segments at the beginning and end. Our first episode is in post-production at the moment, and is sort of on hold until The Happening is released.

I just finished it and LOVED it! Quiptracks (once again) did an excellent job.

Holy cow is this movie painful! I watched it for the first time with the riff, and was just dumbstruck how awful the acting was by everyone involved.

Also, is the twist ending that the old lady is NOT the cause of the Happening? As stupid as everything else was in this movie I was sure that it would turn out she was somehow responsible.
Title: Re: QuipTracks: The Happening - NOW AVAILABLE
Post by: Invader_quirk on October 19, 2008, 03:37:51 PM
Thank you, Darth Geek, for your continued support!!

The thing with the old lady is that it shows what triggers the plants. It affects her because of her great anger, even though she's alone, which sets up for them ending the "event" by loving each other. If you go back, most of the deaths happen when people are mad or arguing, the initial attack on Philadelphia being triggered by soaring murder rates. Yeah, it's stupid, and it's inconsistent throughout the movie, too, but that's what I got out of it after 15+ viewings.
Title: Re: QuipTracks: The Happening - NOW AVAILABLE
Post by: RoninFox on October 19, 2008, 04:43:25 PM
I never thought it had to do with anger, just that it was increasing in sensitivity until at its peek it could affect one person alone, then as they hinted at earlier in the film the effect just dissipated.  The three survivors survived because they waited inside long enough to avoid the timetable.

It was still stupid and incredibly irresponsible for Zooey to take the little girl outside before they KNEW this, but hey.

PROGRESS REPORT #1 - "The Happening" unriffed

My first time with The Happening. You know, I was expecting some godawful work at Battlefield Earth levels, the way people were talking off to it. Oh, it's a bad movie, but not nearly the worst thing I've ever seen. If anything, I enjoyed the visuals work, which has always been Shyamlan's strong point. The plot, blah. The acting... well, I don't think the acting in itself was bad. I'd credit the sissy Wahlberg lines and disjointed nothings on the screenplay.

Let's see what two more viewings do to me.

PROGRESS REPORT #2 - "The Happening" riffed with Quiptracks

After second viewing, I think even worse of this film. Quiptracks did a good job pointing out a lot of little things I didn't catch on the first time (like the rather large number of train conductors, or the fact that a tiny hole in the roof is the least of your concerns when you're in a Jeep). I can easily call this the worse Shyamlan movie to date.

In direct converse, I can easily call this the best Quiptracks to date! In fact, this is better then the majority of the Rifftraxs out there! You guys are funny as hell and you have an amazing spirit in these projects I just love. "The fair is in town" bit had me laughing for ten minutes solid, and I don't think I ever stopped giggling. Highlights for me:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And that's only scratching the surface. Seriously, guys, two thumbs up! Four star! Here's your riffing Oscar!

EVERYBODY, GO BUY THIS QUIPTRACK NOW!!!

Mike and Co are gonna have to work their asses off to get close to this!

PROGRESS REPORT #3 - "The Happening" riffed with Rifftrax

I know this film line-for-line now! No fact has made me sadder!

Alrighty, so the Rifftrax version, eh, pretty standard stuff. Rifftrax doesn't surprise me as much as it used to, and this seemed like punching the clock for them. A lot of their effort seems to be cramming as many celebrities and pop culture references as they can into a riff. Besides how weak wind is as a bad guy, they never really dig into the movie. There were a few good moments, but not enough to make it stand out.

Fun, but I won't be listening to it again. The Quiptrack, however, I'll probably watch once a month or so.  :)

Really? I thought this was even worse that crap like Battlefield Earth and Batman and Robin, because at least those have things happening on screen (note the irony here). This was an hour and a half of slow talking and closeups that were WAY too close up. This was boring bad, as apposed to goofy bad.

Well, we've had a decent number of downloads, but not much feedback...

If you've seen this, PLEASE let us know what you thought, even if you think it sucked!

You mean here or on your website?

If here: I write it now.

Quiptracks is not Rifftrax. They are different from Rifftrax in the sense the Spongebob is not Mickey. The goals are the same but the style is completely different. Quiptracks holds some sort of fantasy feeling to it and often think of the unexpected. They are funny in their own why and stray far from the usual making them unique. They even use a different synching method than Mike and the guys. Hopefully, Quiptracks will soon be widely known and very appreciated. As for the riff of "The Happening", Tristian and Tracy have filled the film will non-stop laughs, making sure every joke would at least give you a chuckle.

Both, I guess. On the site is more important though.

And thanks.

If I remember right, when I was at your site to pick up the free "Jurassic Park" riff, the account-creation process said something about how you weren't setup to accept charges from my location (or some words along those lines).  What's the chances that this would be available as an iRiff?

That shouldn't happen... how long ago did you try that?

As for the iRiffs thing.... we're hoping we won't have to. We're hoping The Show will bring more people to our site, where we don't have to split the tiny amount we already charge for each track. We also really would like to be independent of Rifftrax. Because of this, we'd really like to help you with this problem you ran into on our site.

Um, looks like it might have been November 16th.  Might have been a day or two before that.

Our webmaster changed some things and we'd like you to try again, if it's not too much trouble. If it still doesn't work, email us.

There were a few minor quirks (Invader Quirks?), but this time it worked out okay.  I was able to pay via paypal, and download two of your other quip tracks.  Seems OK now.  Thanks!

A-hah, in revisiting the site I see where the problem pops up.  If I pick a free Quiptrack (in this case, "Lady in the Water"), then when I go through the checkout process I'm told:  "Sorry, we are not accepting payments from your region at this time.  Please contact us for alternate arrangements."  So apparently that's side-effect of having nothing that I need to pay for, but when I saw the message I assumed it was not possible for me to buy from the site.

In any case, all's well for me.  Just thought I'd mention what seems to produce that confusing message, in case other visitors to your site are thrown off by it the way I was.

Interesting. We'll look into it so maybe we can prevent more confusion. Thanks for bringing it up.

We are close to releasing our next track: Mission Impossible 2, on our site. We need to record it. I guess we're not really that close, but we're hoping to have it out by the new year. After that, we're hoping to do a quick redo of Lady in the Water, since it's our oldest, and one of the free tracks that people judge us by. The next episode of the show is also in the works, but it's on hold until MI:2 is done.

I'm glad to hear you're redoing Lady in the Water. My friends and I were in the mood to see another riffed M. Night movie one night and we really enjoyed your take on it. We just thought it was too bad that the audio quality was inconsistent. I wouldn't mind paying for a version with better quality audio. Do you plan on adding a donate button one of these days?

Darth Geek: We took your words to heart and bought a copy of Hulk this evening.

Re: a donate button: I guess we could put one up, or you could just buy the other tracks. Lady in the Water will definitely remain free though. We want to keep those first two as big samples because while a minute-long clip might be enough for a riff fan to judge by, syncing a riff seems like a big deal for the un-initiated and they might be hesitant to spend money trying it out. On that note, the best donation for those tracks you could give us would be a review on our website  ;D. I know the review system is weird (and I'm not sure we can easily fix it...) but the more user testimonials we have, the more likely newbies will be willing to try it out.

I just got around to trying this and it does the same thing for me. I hope we haven't lost any customers due to this... Anyway, thanks for the tip.

@Darth Geek: I wouldn't get my hopes up. We're trying to figure out the best way to go about handling outside writing and guest riffers right now and the prevailing school of thought is basically that it should be avoided. I have a more liberal stance, but it's not entirely up to me. I can say that you'd have to accept working for a free track, but that's standard community-riff fare so you were probably expecting that. You'd also have to sign a contract. I don't know... There'll be a few months probably before it comes out, but the way things stand now, it doesn't seem likely.

Here's my cover. You might have to look pretty closely to find a couple of things I added. Hint... look for a top hat and banana peels.

Nice! Love what you did! I am wishing we could give you more to work with, but I really like the creative alternatives to the riffer-heads-on-bodies thing.

I've been thinking about modding Mr McQ for each release. For example, give him a Van Helsing hat, put a knife in his eye for The Happening, sharp teeth for Jurassic Park, etc.
