Title: Riff Raff Theater: Die Hard
Post by: ChrisHanel on June 28, 2008, 07:12:42 AM
This space intentionally left blank until I wake up enough to say something coherent here. It's 9 AM and I have no idea what I'm doing up.

Die Hard. Scripts due August 15th. Prizes for funny people.

More when I'm coherent.

I was really hoping your next one was going to be HULK.

Where was the announcement of the next years worth of movie choices?

He just made an announcement at the live show.  I won't give the list cause I'm not sure if they wanted that out there yet.

Well I did my semi part you just happen to of caught me at a day I had nothing to do.

I may or may not add on to that riff depending on whether or not I feel like watching the rest of the film.

I'm planning on giving this one the once over.  I'm not sold that this is a good target since Bruce Willis is cracking jokes through the whole thing anyway but I have a couple of ideas for jokes in certain places.

That's right, I am the Ben Affleck of riffing   :D

The title alone begs to be riffed. Does the protagonist hate games of chance, or does he just find them REALLY difficult.

Also, this movie is rated "M" for mild nudity (bonus) and motherfuckers. :)

I know there are a few writers with kids, so here's a family-oriented review for Die Hard. They're actually not that critical of the overall content. I know most people kinda roll their eyes at pages like these, but some families live by them. Die hard is the most risque film we've done so far, so it's important to have all the info out there.

There's nothing "rather" about it. Die Hard is and always will be an awesome movie. But that has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it can be riffed. :)

I tend to disagree, which is why I think the trax for "Batman and Robin" is funnier than the one for "The Fellowship Of The Ring"...but I've had this debate before and down that road lie nothing but pointless circular arguments so I shall say no more.

This one so far has been kind of a mixed bag for me as far as riffing goes.  There are several moments where I got into a bit of a tear and could fire off a whole bunch of riffs, but then great stretches of the movie would go by where I'd just be watching the movie.  It's a good challenge though!  And this is definitely a movie I don't mind revisiting a second time for more writing!

I'm almost finished with my first pass and I'm not sure I'm gonna do a second one.  About 100 riffs is gonna be all I'll be sending in this time.  There are a couple of jokes that I'll be really sad if they don't make it in the script.

I don't like riffing on good movies but I'll try anything you guys throw out there provided I can get ahold of the movie easily.

I do not share your fears of them riffing movies that aren't bad.  There are plenty of jokes for this one.

There has been a long standing debate about whether or not a "good" movie (or at the very least a "not shitty" one) can be riffed. I'm firmly in the "yes" camp. As far as I'm concerned, riffing on a good movie just adds another level of goodness to it. I can then enjoy both the movie AND the jokes. It's like watching a great movie with my funny best friend.

I loved LOTR, but I loved LOTR with riffs even more.

Die Hard was on my personal list of movies to riff, and I'm glad we ended up choosing it. Even though it's a bit on the old side, it's fairly easy to get ahold of at a reasonable price, so we're confident that people who enjoy our work will pick it up and give it a try. Hopefully, we'll put to rest this whole "you can't riff good movies" thing once and for all. I absolutely love this movie. My wife saw it for the first time with me when we were doing our non-writing run through, and she loved it too. But as usual, we still had a couple of zingers written even just from watching the movie with no pen and paper handy. This is going to be a fun one, scout's honour. :)

This isn't even about riffing good movies anymore. This is about riffing a classic movie that people know by heart. I don't think this will work in a live setting for the same reason you guys don't think riffing a live show of Rocky Horror Picture Show would work, because people are going to show up to react to the movie. They'll show up to cheer at the "Yippee-ki-yeah, mutherfucker"s and go "ho-ho-ho" when they read the shirt and do fist pumps and stuff, and there will be poor little Riff Raff Theater will be in a corner, going, "hey, we have a joke for this scene" and the crowd will go "Fuck off, we're watching MOTHERFUCKING DIE HARD!!!"

That's kinda what I was thinking too.  I'd be really, really clear what the show is gonna be in all the promotional stuff for this one.  I don't think there were a ton of people who would show up to watch Speed, Tron or LXG for the joy of seeing it in a theater again.  I bet some people might get excited when they hear Die Hard is gonna be shown and might not be too happy with the show itself.

Die Hard is not a great movie, it's good.  It's really dated now too.  People don't get excited to see old movies in theaters anymore because people can own old movies and watch them on their extra special home theater system, so I don't think these are concerns that have merit.

Well, also, you don't riff Rocky Horror Picture Show because it has become it's own thing, and there is a set ritual for watching it in a theater.  Riffing it would be like trying to change the ritual and it would piss people off.  It's not that Rocky Horror is a classic movie.

Yes, I also agree with that as well. I was asked by the theater if we'd create a new script for RHPS, and I believe my response was something along the lines of, "Are you out of your GOURD?!"

Oh snaps this film again.

Ha I just looked over my riff script again and it's safe to say that this film can infact easilly be riffed.

Also this film has one of my favorite movie villians.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

meh.

My "riffing style" is somewhat jaded and off-color by normal Rifftrax standards.

Not necessarily true.  I've been to a lot of movies within the past couple years at this very cool theater in town where you get a little table next to your seat and can get stuff like pizza and fried dough and beer, and they run a lot of older movies, I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark there a few years ago and the entire crowd was completely into it, cheering and clapping at all the right moments.  It was one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had at a movie theater, and I saw Ghostbusters there not long after and it was just as fun.  Now it's one of my favorite places to go revisit an older movie.  Yeah, I have them on DVD for the most part, but even the greatest home theater system in the world can't recreate that sort of theatrical experience.

Just sayin'.

Ok, when we get these fancy theaters where I live I will buy that argument, but why can't "that sort of theatrical experience" be recreated at home?  I've seen some pretty cool home theater set-ups.  I'm talking about the average person's experience.  Right now most home set-ups will be better and cheaper than going to the movie theater.  The Englert will not have pizza and fried dough right next to your seat.  They did have beer, but you have to drink it outside the theater and inside the building.

There's just something about seeing a movie in a theater on a big screen with a bunch of other people who are enjoying it that is different than watching it on a home system.  It's, I don't know, more festive.  That aspect of it can't be recreated in the home.

I agree, but why does that mean that a good movie can't be seen in a theater and riffed at the same time?  Would it cause a riot?

The kind of audience that shows up for these riffings are a little more sophisticated than your average movie goer.  I don't think they would be saddened by seeing "The Masterpiece" Die Hard having its flaws poked at.  I liked Tron, but I had no problem watching them riff it.  The movie by itself is one artform, but when it is riffed the movie and the riff together become another artform entirely.

I'm not sure I'm clear on this issue. I don't worry about the audience being ANGRY at the riffers, I worry about the audience IGNORING the riffers.

Greg, these hypothetical Die Hard fans wouldn't want to laugh anyway.  Do you think they should have a warning on the marquee that tells people we will be making fun of this movie.  Why would you go if you passionately loved Die Hard that much?
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Die Hard
Post by: GregMcduck on August 08, 2008, 10:48:41 AM
Ok, let me step back and redefine me terms here.

Die Hard is a good movie. Most people would agree. Now, people have said that, while watching a Rifftrax for a good and/or interesting movie, they have occasionally been known to tune out the riffing to concentrate on the film. This has happened to me a few times. What I fear is not about Die Hard fans getting mad at this production, but that the audience in general will come in, and because the movie is as good as it is, will tune out the Riff Raff crew and focus on the movie instead.

Thus, they will not be laughing, because they are not hearing the jokes. They are watching Die Hard.

That's what worries me. Got it?

I think you are overestimating the power of Die Hard to entrance people, but maybe they can advise people to watch the movie at home again just before coming to the theater to see it.

I've got a fantastic idea that nobody has actually mentioned yet. How about you let me, Chris, Todd, Danuuc, and the rest of the crew worry about that.

We'll write our stuff. You write your stuff. Chris and I will blend it together into entertainment magic like we always do, and Chris, Todd, and Danuuc will work their mojo on it at the live show and make it even better.

All you have to do (after you submit your script!! :)) is show up, and have a good time. I personally guarantee that you will not be disappointed. [1]

Sound good? :)

For the record, I don't question your motives or your intentions either.

I just think you should have a little bit of faith in us. We *have* considered these things. We continue to look at things from every angle that we can think of. We're confident in how things are set up, and so is the Englert (as evidenced by the fact that we've officially been signed on for a full season of shows).

We continue to get a healthy number of partial and full script submissions every single time we have a new project to work on. We get lots and lots of positive feedback from the people at the live shows and the writers who have gotten to hear our recorded riffs. As announced at the last show, Speed will soon be available for purchase from rifftrax.com (as soon as all the details are ironed out - this is not a simple process legally, as I'm sure you can understand). TRON and LXG will be recorded as soon as we can deal with our recording studio issues (which we have mentioned in passing previously, but don't feel there is any need to go into great detail about online to avoid offending any of the parties involved).

I guess what I'm saying is... we must be doing SOMETHING right. Don't worry so much. You're way too young to have an aneurysm. :)

By the way, as a reminder to everyone, the deadline for submissions for Die Hard is this Friday, August 15th. I only have one script so far; I'd love to see some more coming in! We always get a handful right on the deadline night, but don't feel the need to wait until the last minute if you've already done your writing. :)

I have about 45 minutes of the movie left to type up my script for. I have my notes all typed up, it's just a matter of going through and actually finding the time codes.

Hopefully I'll be done Wednesday night.

I'm going to watch the movie one more time, just to check the time codes and tighten up my script.  It should be finalized by Thursday.

This has been a fun project.  I really like this movie, and I think that made it easier for me to write.

I am going to submit mine later today. I am almost done! No Urkel jokes for me though....but there is a Schnappi joke!

Also, Chris, can you and your fellow riffers pronounce German, cause I a can through a few German jokes in there....

Like German puns?
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Die Hard
Post by: Chaos on August 14, 2008, 05:52:29 AM
Seriously, don't bother making any RiffTrax staple jokes, they won't be used. We are not RiffTrax, and we will not be making any Schnappi jokes. We also tend to steer clear of jokes about bacon and Horatio Sanz. Frankly, I don't get the fascination. :P

Rosie O'Donnell is still fair game though. ;)
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Die Hard
Post by: anais.jude on August 14, 2008, 07:03:06 AM
Well although the Schnappi joke is standard for Rifftrax, it just fits in this context because they are german villains so to automatically say you aren't going to use them is pretty silly.

But, I have decided to replace those jokes with other famous German things

And Tripe, I don't mean German puns

But If they aren't picked then I'll never know. I'm just interested in the definition of "German jokes"

Because that could mean jokey references to German things or actually jokes that only work if one speaks German (which I do in a very limited way, but still) :)

Well then how are you supposed to know when to put the flag up?  Everybody had those Speed flags up way before you had a script.  So, everybody take down your League of Extraordinary Gentlemen flags cuz only the keepers of the secret script know.

Go ahead and put the flags in. We make it a point to try and get at least something from everyone's script, and I don't want to leave people hanging.

I think you should get the flag on loan until the script is done.  I don't think you should go out of the way to use a joke from everybody if somebody only sends in stuff that doesn't work for you.  If I don't make a script then I'll take that banner down.  No big deal.

Tickets should be on sale for the Sept. 19th show now if you want to take the trip to Iowa. :)

That being said, now that Chris has his recording equipment in hand and is working on getting it all set up, we'll shortly be in the process of playing catch up with all of our current library of completed scripts. Look for us to get Tron, LXG, and I Robot recorded within the next couple of weeks, then just add a couple of extra weeks for editing and we'll be able to release at least some of them when the updated iRiffs site goes live. Shortly after that, Die Hard should be released on mp3 as well, and from there on out we're hoping to release the mp3 very close to the date of the live show (if not same day).

Hey, a real quick note as we get ready for tomorrow's show --

I just wanted to give a big thumbs up to the writers on this script. The feeling right now, looking at what we have to work with, is that this is by far the strongest pool of jokes that we've ever had to work with. The final script is full of great gags and I can't wait to see what the audience thinks of it.

On a sad note, we had plans to do our recording of Die Hard as a part of dress rehearsal, but logistics prevented us from pulling this off. It's looking like LXG will be next on the recording block after all.

Anybody cut out completely this time?

Everybody who submitted material is in the final draft of the script.

It's conceivable that somebody could be inadvertently cut from the actual performance due to timing issues during actual delivery or because of a line flub, but as of right now all contributors are represented in the script itself.

I just want to say good luck to our performers tonight. I'm really looking forward to this one.

To those of you who will be there tonight, enjoy yourselves! And be sure to meet up with Chris and the gang afterwards. I think there's a coffee shop nearby or something like that? I'm sure Chris will elaborate at the show.

Apparently we have a couple of silent contributors who have come to every single show but have never hung out with the gang afterwards? Please, we'd love to meet you! Be sure to stop by after the show and say "hi" to the crew. :)

I'll say high. I'm not sure how long we'll be hanging out. I know we're going to that smoke shop/coffee house for a few minutes after the show. My girlfriend and I have a craving for Steak & Shake and we can't get there before the show, so we have to hit that up tonight.

Well, that was awesome.

Biggest audience we've had yet, easily the best performance. Threw in a little improv after intermission, went over well. My voice is almost gone.

I saw majorjoe23, he came up and took a bow with everyone again. I still haven't had a chance to have a full convo with you, though. Stick around after, people! :)

I'll post pictures as soon as I get them from Bryan.

I probably should have said my full  name instead of just Joe. What can I say, I'm a celebrity, like Prince or Cher.

I had a great time. Do you put up a finalized script? I'd like to check how many jokes I had in. I'm surprised "supplies!" made it. We would have stuck around longer, but improv ran a little long and we had a two hour drive and an early morning appointment ahead of us.

After Minority Report I'll try to stick around for a few minutes.
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Die Hard
Post by: Chaos on September 20, 2008, 11:43:11 AM
It's not our policy to post the script afterwards (because that would detract from the enjoyment of the mp3 which we will hopefully be able to record soon - we're working through the backlog as quickly as possible), but we'll announce our prize winners (and what they've won) soon - including highest contributor.

I can give you a basic snapshot of your stats though, if you want. 43 of your 187 submitted lines made it into the final script, which was 23% of your script, and accounted for 6.39% of the final script. Nice work! 43 lines is very respectable, especially for a first time contributor.

So when you're telling all of your friends to buy our mp3, be sure to show off and tell them that 6.39% of that mp3 is yours! :)

It should be done by then, I would think.

We don't ad lib on recording days anymore, because we do our ad lib writing during actual writing sessions before the script is finalized. So usually all the editing process requires anymore is cleaning up a few riffs here and there to fit the timestamp, or fix a flubbed line, or add sound effects. Chris will probably be able to have it done by early next week and ready for upload (but please don't take this as an official release date announcement - as we know, real life can always intrude!).

Chris has been working on Die Hard. He has had to rerecord a few things from what I heard. He plans to have it released on Christmas Day (I'm crossing my fingers too). But yeah, having a real life means you can't move as fast as RiffTrax with these things.
