Title: Please recommend an episode
Post by: Save Ferris on June 12, 2008, 05:36:36 PM
Im going to be introducing a friend of mine to MST3k who is a paleontologist. Naturally im thinking dinosaur related episodes.

Any Dino-riffic recommendations?

Well, there's King Dinosaur and Gorgo, but why not introduce him to Rifftrax instead and show him the riff of Jurassic Park? :)

Agreed, theres also the many Gamera episodes, or the two Godzilla ones.

Why not both?  Future War!  Dinosaurs from the future tracking a runaway in the past (our present)!

EDIT:  And PlayMSTie swoops in as I'm looking up the title to make sure I'm thinking of the right movie.  Good timing!   ;)

Thanks for the good replies!

I did show her Jurassic Park--and she loved it--so that was technically her first taste of 'MST3k'

I seem to remember some kind of super geeky 'research scientist' or 'librarian' who was a hero in one of the episodes....

You're gonna have to narrow it down a bit more. We've seen a lot of geeks.  :)

Beginning of the End, Peter Graves starring in a movie about giant grasshoppers (sorry, locusts).  It was one of Rhino's single releases.

I'm surprised none of you mentioned Lost Continent.

Rock climbing!

There's spelunking in The Mole People.  That's sorta like rock climbing.

That was Hercules Against the Moon Men...and that had rock creatures and a bad guy in oven mitts.

No dinosaurs.

Since paleontologists study fossils what about Ring of Terror with all those old fossils playing college students?

 ;)

You should go with Space Mutiny if you want to ween somebody into MST3k, or Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

Both good suggestions.  Just showed Overdrawn to a friend who only vaguely remembered MST3K and it had him rolling a few times.  I think Prince of Space would be a good one too.

Gamera ones are pretty good.

I'd personally avoid King Dinosaur as an introductory episode simply because of the rampant animal abuse in that movie. I dunno, watching an alligator and iguana actually bite the crap out of each other (since I don't think the Humane Society was around yet) really made it so I couldn't enjoy the riffs. I just came out of it feeling really bad.  :(

It was actually that footage (and more like it) that got the American Humane Society on movie sets.  They had suspicions before that animals weren't being treated properly on some sets - that was was just flagrant enough to make their case.

Deathstalker and the Warriors From Hell.

"If this hat made me look stupid, you'd tell me, right?"

If you can get hold of it, Phase IV.

Might I also suggest 'Track of the Moon Beast', 'Werewolf', or 'Puma Man'.  If my memory serves, Tony from Puma Man is supposed to be a paleontologist.

That's true!  But then, do they make fun of paleontologists?

If not a Japanese monster movie, I'd recommend any of the Roger Corman movies.  Especially It Conquered the World.

Or Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster!

Or Teenagers From Outer Space!

Or The Magical Voyage of Sinbad!

Or The Magic Sword!

But you know, when you ask fans, we're all biased...  I can't for the life of me remember which ones keep the plot moving, but I bet as long as you avoid starting with The Castle of Fu Manchu, The Beast of Yucca Flats, or Red Zone Cuba, you're probably OK!

Actual DINOSAUR movies, would be things like Future War, Legend of the Dinosaur (if you think they are brave enough for a KTV episode), and, um, duuuuuh @_@

OH!
 TEENAGE CAVEMAN!

1007 - Track of the Moon Beast...

I think the guy was an anthropologist, like me! 'cept I'm better.

Or 904 - Werewolf...."Paul's a...woooaaarrwolf?"

Another introduction to MST3K has been successfully made: I got my cousin hooked tonight with a single viewing of "Pod People." That is one powerful episode. :) I wasn't sure whether he'd like it -- he can be extremely picky -- but he was howling within minutes.
