Title: MST3k Panel at Comic-Con!
Post by: torgosPizza on May 29, 2008, 09:41:46 PM
If you're on the Shout! Factory newsletter, like I am, then you may have received this tiny little tidbit / nugget of info:

MST3K Panel At Comic-Con '08
For the first time ever...EVER, the forces behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 are appearing at San Diego's Comic-Con. Mark your day planners for July 25 at 7:15 p.m. Moderated by the very funny Patton Oswalt, this will be one event you don't want to miss.

So yeah. That's the "big announcement" I kept alluding to these last few weeks. We'll be there along with Mike and the guys. See you there!

Upon closer inspection, this is the same date that our RiffTrax Live event is supposed to take place. I'm guessing it's a typo or some other kind of mistake. I'll let you know what happens.

Will it be filmed? Not only because I won't be able to attend, but because I have a feeling that it would make an awesome DVD extra.... ;)

Good news, everyone!

Got an email from Shout Factory: "Sorry about that. The panel is on Friday. We'll get the newsletter fixed."

So yeah. Here's a recap for Riffaholics and MSTies:

Thursday: Mike, Kevin and BIll signing autographs.
Friday: MST3k 20th reunion panel, hosted by Patton Oswalt.
Saturday: RiffTrax Live: Plan 9 From Outer Space
Sunday: RiffTrax Unofficial Meet-up at Elephant & Castle

(Not to mention we'll have our own booth at the Con this year, where we'll be selling and giving away some stuff.)

This year I think we should call it "Riff-Con".

Who's on the panel?

Not exactly sure, but I'd suffice it to say at the very least, "The entire cast of MST3k." Yes, Mike AND Joel. And Frank, Trace, Kevin, Bill, Josh and Mary Jo.

From what I gather.

It's an honest-to-goodness Con panel, AFAIK. Which means in one of the ballrooms - hopefully the biggest one. (Ballroom H I think?) Soon as I know, I'll relay the info.

No, the panel is the night before the live show (at least, it is today.)

I suspect you'll have to get into the panel the old-fashioned way:  Finding the ballroom and standing in a massive line for half an eternity.

No, the panel is at Comic-Con, which means to get in you have to have a pass to the Con for that day. The live Rifftrax event is a separate entity that will be offsite...I think there was some misunderstanding/mislinking going on earlier. To get tickets for Comic-Con itself, go here: http://www.comic-con.org/cci/cci_reg.shtml (you can get all 4 days or days individually)

Also, for first time attendees - show up for the panel WELL in advance.

To purchase tickets for the Live Rifftrax Show go to the link torgo posted.

Edit: Yeah, what Torso said! (Jesus I'm slow on the replies...you guys work too quick!  )

I'm pretty sure that in the past the four day passes and the passes for the busiest day (Saturday? i think) were sold out by the time the con started, probably several days in advance.  They also increase in price as it goes, so it makes no sense to wait to buy your pass.  If you're stuck, you can always try to buy a pass off someone who isn't coming back, but since it's such an early event, you might not have much luck.

And remember:

Oh yeah, definitely buy passes for the Con ASAP, I was talking about queuing up for the panel itself well in advance...the lines can be pretty insane.

Argh, this just makes me even more pissed I won't be at the con this year. I'm sure when I got next year there will some "According to Jim/Two and a Half Men" panel I'll be forced to sit through as punishment.
Title: Re: MST3k Panel at Comic-Con!
Post by: James of LinHood on June 02, 2008, 10:27:30 AM
Since the con doesn't clear out the rooms after each panel it's possible to go to the room where the MST3K panel will take place, sit in on the panels in that room, and stay there until the MST3K panel.  That way you'll have a guaranteed seat for the panel.  The only downside to this is that you could get stuck sitting through some boring panels beforehand.  But, if you've got time, I highly suggest that you do this.

All this talk of the sold-out Convention, waiting in lines for hours and massively packed ballrooms is already tripping out my claustrophobia. I'm pretty sure that i won't be making it this time, but if i did i'd have to stock up on paper bags just to help me breathe. Either that, or i'd just skip the Con stuff and head straight to the meet-up... which sounds like a lot of fun!

It would be great if you could make it to the meet-up.  IMO, the more people that come to that, the better.  Just let me know so I can add your name to the list of meet-up attendees!

Just noticed on Kevin Smith's website his Q & A panel will be in Hall H (the ginormous one) on Friday the 25th from 6:30-8:00pm. So, it looks like the MST panel won't be held there. The next logical choice should be Room 6CDEF. That used to be considered the "big room" back in the day. Any update Torgo?

The Comic-Con usually releases their full schedule 10 to 14 days before the Comic-Con opens.  In other words, we should know what room the MST3K panel will be held in by the end of next week.

Also, I pretty much knew that the MST3K panel wouldn't be held in Hall H.  So, this news comes as no surprise to me.

I suppose it all depends on what your interests are.

The Comic-Con has a lot more to offer than just the MST3K panel.  Like exclusive movie previews, sneak peeks, and items.  Plus, the Comic-Con just plain rocks.   :P

But, if you really do hate big crowds then you made the right choice.  Because you have not seen crowded until you've been to the San Diego Comic-Con.

Besides, TeamRAD, Sicgirl, (maybe) Courtney, and myself will be hanging out before and/or after the CT show.  Feel free to join up with us.

And here's where you can go to see where the rooms are located and how big they are:

http://www.sdccc.org/meetingplanners/buildingoverview.cfm (http://www.sdccc.org/meetingplanners/buildingoverview.cfm)

BTW, according to that site, room 6B will seat just over 1,000 people.

EDIT:  Because I'm a complete nerd I'm looking over that site and doing a little math.

According to the site, the exhibit floor is 1,616 feet by 304 feet.  You could fit over 5 football fields along the length of the exhibit floor.

This just in from the Comic-Con website's full programming schedule:

7:15-8:15 Mystery Science Theater 3000 20th Anniversary Reunion— From 1988 to 1999, the long-suffering captives aboard the Satellite of Love wisecracked their way through hundreds of cinema's problem children—those delirious B-movies of yesteryear created by twisted imaginations and, possibly, the need for a tax shelter. To celebrate the show's 20th Anniversary, join a historic reunion of cast and crew, including creator Joel Hodgson, producer Jim Mallon and fellow writer/performers Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, Mary Jo Pehl, Paul Chaplin, J. Elvis Weinstein, Bridget Nelson, and Bill Corbett for a Q&A panel hosted by self-professed "MST3K nerd" and comedian Patton Oswalt (The King of Queens). Room 6B

There's really no need for anyone to get bootleg video of this when a better quality version of the exact same thing will be a bonus feature on the upcoming MST3K DVD set.

I was planning on trying to record this if The Powers That Be were not.  But since they are I'm not going to go to the trouble.

Only an hour?    I know, I know, wanting more than an hour is very greedy.    I guess the phrase, "leave them wanting more" is appropriate.

I wonder if this would be a good occasion for those "cross over guest riffs" to be discussed?

Yeesh, this is the third time today I've done something like this, I really need to slow down when I read.

Thanks in advance to anybody who gets video of it though. :)

Shout! is taping it and it will be on the 20th Anniversary set. Don't you guys read anything? :P

Indeed.  We probably won't know the episodes until sometime this weekend.

But I do plan on making nightly blogs on this board about my experiences at the Con.  So, if no one else does, I'll be sure to keep you all updated.

Aw, yes, Patton Oswalt. The man who was the subject of ire from MST3K fans for talking like a hick when advertising MST3K in a commercial on Comedy Central. Anyone else remember that?

Funny guy. He was awesome on King of Queens and Reno 911. Good to know he's a fan.

A line of truly unfathomable proportions prevented me from attending the panel :'( (seriously, it looped the building. I put some blame on the Venture Bros. and Robot Chicken panels being immediately before the MST3K one. Stupid scheduling). Though in retrospect I only got in line 2 hours easly, and that wasn't nearly early enough.

I was lucky enough to have already met Mike, Bill, and Kevin at the Autograph signing (twice!), so that's something. I just wish I could've seen the reunion as well (and Joel!)

Back in the hotel room after attending the panel. It was a good time. I hope that the Shout Factory includes the intro montage on the new set; it would be a great DVD load movie. Its a shame the panel wasn't longer. And I get the feeling that most of the questions were known to the panelists ahead of time.

I met Mike, Kevin, and Bill on Thursday and was blown away by how accommodating they all were. Simply amazing. They signed for almost four hours straight on Thursday--anything that was put in front of them--and accepted any photo request. And they were smiling the entire time. Then they came back for more at the Rifftrax booth on Friday. I think I've only picked up maybe a dozen Rifftrax episodes thus far, but as long at those three are producing work, I will be buying. They had my respect as creatives long ago, and after this show they've got my respect as just good people.

I'm shocked that the entire CT crew didn't do a signing as well. Mary Jo Pehl did a signing at the Shout Factory booth with Kevin, Bill, and Bridget Nelson-Jones (or is it Jones-Nelson?), but that was it. No Frank, Trace, Josh, or, most noticeably of course, Joel. I'm not sure I get that. I think I've read that Joel isn't a huge fan of the limelight, but this really seemed like a good time to give a tip of the hat to the fans that have kept the show alive for, gosh, 20 years. It feels like the cultures of the two groups are worlds apart. And I thought it was interesting to see how everyone left the stage after the panel. The talk on stage was light and fun, but afterward the groups parted quickly.

I felt bad for Bridget during the panel tonight when she responded to the question of what she was doing now. She talked about her work for the church and the crowd response was a little strained. I'm guessing it was more that the audience was surprised by the answer and a little unsure of how to respond rather than any disrespect. I hope she didn't take it as such. She had a great comeback that got a relaxing chuckle out of the audience. I think she complained that the Joe Don Baker jokes earlier in the night got more applause than she did.

Also, the episodes for the 20th anniversary set are:
211- First Spaceship on Venus
706- Laserblast
904- Werewolf
1004- Future War

(Source...I was there. And: http://www.mst3kinfo.com/?p=758) I thought the panel was great...I don;t think the could have found a better mod than Patton if they tried. He had the standard questions, of course...but he also threw in a lot of his own personal ones that really showed he wasn't throwing out canned questions from ShoutFactory, and really is a fan.

The crowd made up for that afterwards...while I was up geeking out, trying to get a picture with Patton, a bunch of people were screaming out support for what she was doing, and security had to actually step in to get her out of the room because people kept coming up to talk her about that stuff.

I'm betting the lack of participation by the CT crew had more to do with dollars and cents than anything else.  After all the 20th anniversary set is pretty full of Mike-era episodes so it makes sense to have those guys at the Shout Factory autograph table as I'm sure space was limited.  It would have been nice to have a CT booth at Comic-Con but I'm betting those things don't come cheap!  Since CT is just starting, a booth for signing may not have been the wisest use of capital at this point.  I've never had the chance to meet any of those guys but I've only heard nice things about all of them.  I don't think anyone would deliberately dis' us eager fans.  :-)

Oh LORD, I was in there since freakin' 2pm.  I was having a hypoglycemic episode and ducked into the Ghost Hunter's panel and just kind of stuck around.  Believe me, it was a hardship.  Dude next to me during Venture Brothers and Robot Chicken kept falling asleep on me, eating a sandwich made of peppers and awful, and was generally horrible.  Oh Comic Con.  Can you tell I'm slightly grumpy and tired today?

It shouldn't.  They just didn't come out in the order they placed the namecards.  This was the case at almost every panel I've seen.  So they just sat down in the order they came out.  Nothing scandalous!  Everyone got along famously.

It wasn't anything devious, the name plates simply didn't have anything on the back of them and people had to be directed to where their seats were or just plopped down in an open chair...it was kind of funny at a few panels, especially the Repo one where everyone took turns being Paris Hilton.

Gosh, there's nothing like quoting yourself from a previous post to point out that you were wrong.

Joel, Trace, and Frank did indeed do a signing at 4:30pm on Saturday at the Shout Factory booth. It was almost like a stealth signing since it wasn't officially announced. What was even funnier was that it was just sort of scribbled on the corner of the schedule sign at the booth. If you weren't looking for it you would have missed it. That probably worked out well for everyone in line. :)

Hmmm...now if I can only figure out how to get Jim M. and Paul C. to sign my MST3K:The Movie poster, my quest will be complete.

We saw them at dragon year before last. Didn't get an autograph because I figured they might be tired. For me it's more about their collective work than the individuals. But it was way cool for our family to see them. They have brought us more joy and laughs than anyone. Only pythons, kith and the Marx brothers, can rival mst3k
