Title: Go Team Venture!
Post by: Dr. Mrs. The Monarch on May 15, 2008, 02:23:16 PM
Who on the board loves The Venture Brothers! I noticed a couple people have venture avatars! Awesome. I cannot wait for the new season. There is a preview for season 3 on Jackson Publicks website.

I have to say I'm not a huge fan. Sorry.  :-\ However I LOVE Patrick Warburton's voice. As the tick, on seinfeld, etc. He'd make a geat quest riffer...

It took me awhile to get into the Venture Brothers, first time I saw it on Adult Swim I just kind of stared at it without a real reaction then turned it off half way through.  I'm not sure what kind of weird mood I was in that day, maybe it was just a horrible week I can't remember or something, but when I caught a couple episodes in the last year, I got hooked and I got hooked big.  I can't wait for season 3.

I love the Venture Brothers!  Really excited that new ones are finally coming out.  I guess Ben Edlund, the creator of the original Tick comics, is involved in some way?  You can see a Tick-like influence with all the goofy heroes and villains, only a little more adult.
Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Pak-Man on May 16, 2008, 09:56:02 AM
Jackson Publick (One of the show's main helmers) worked on The Tick cartoon as a writer with Ben Edlund, so a lot of his ideas are still drawing from that same well of creativity. He apparantly also stays in touch with Ben Edlund, who has come in to work on three episodes.

Ben did the much maligned (But I really like 'em) Careers in Science, and Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner duology, and he did Viva Los Muertos! (The one with Venturestein.)

Man, this ALMOST makes me want to get cable again.  It looks I'm in for a bit of a wait until it's on DVD.

Did anyone else find that they liked Season 1 better than Season 2?  Brock was a lot scarier and less nurturing in Season 1.

I've only watched that one once so far, but it was fairly recently.  Just seeing the Monarch in his original concept costume was hilarious.  Have you listened to Doc on the commentaries, talking about how many guys will tell him his voice is a big part of why they find Dr. Girlfriend attractive?  I nearly cried laughing at that.

Thanks, I knew there was a connection.  I still have a first edition of Tick #1 that I bought when it came out, way back in the day.  A very funny comic.  Edlund never got around to writing many of them though.  I think the original Tick series ran for about 12 issues over the course of several years?

I think Season 2 was an improvement overall, it really gave them a chance to develop the characters.  And making the Monarch's two henchmen into major characters was a brilliant move.  It's an incredibly smart show considering that at its core its a parody of Johnny Quest.

What I love is that it never stops at parody. It parodys things, but that's never the joke. The characters have their own elements to them that  make them an integral part of the Venture universe. Take the Fantastic Four parody.  The characters are obviously based off them, but they've added twists to everyone that makes them all fit seamlessly into the Venture world of superscience.

I'm turning into a total Venture Bros whore. Pak and I went out and looked everywhere for those little [adult swim] figurines and the very one I was hoping for the most (Monarch) was the one I got!!! They're blind packaged so I wound up with two Monarchs since yesterday. Now if I can just wrangle a Dr.Girlfriend figure....

The new ep last night kicked ASS. This may be the best show ever on [adult swim], and before anyone thinks I'm jumping the gun, I've thought this since season 1.

Also, it doesn't hurt at all that they have J.G. "Foetus" Thirlwell (http://www.foetus.org (http://www.foetus.org)) composing the awesome music for the show. I've been into the gentleman's eclectic material for most of my adult life.

I loved the new episode but I'll say it's certainly not a good place to start if you're new to the show, you're not going to have a clue what's going on.  It was great to see more backstory on the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend.

Luckily he is going to rent season 1

Figurines?  I want figurines!  Where did you get them?

We got ours from Hot Topic. They're Adult Swim figurines, and they're blind packaged so you don't know which one you're getting, so there's a chance you might end up with an Assy McGee (Feel the heft of the boxes. He's the heaviest figurine if you want to avoid having a resin model of a talking hinder) but we managed to score 2 Monarchs in just 5 tries, so either we're lucky, or he's one of the more prolific figures. Still no Dr. Girlfriend, though..

If you have trouble finding them at Hot Topic, you can also order them directly from the [adult swim] store: http://www.williamsstreet.com/cat/Kidrobot-Adult-Swim-Mini-Series.html (http://www.williamsstreet.com/cat/Kidrobot-Adult-Swim-Mini-Series.html)

They're also calling the wave series one, so assuming sales are good on these, we've got a second wave to look forward to.

Damn, that seems like a steep price for 3 figurines.  How big are they again?

If I'm going to spend that much and possibly get a big ass out of it, I think I'll wait until I can get off eBay or something.

The size depends on the figure. Seems they range from 1"-2.5". I'll admit they're pricier than usual for blind boxed figurines (I think Hot Topic charged $7 per box). Pak and I will resort to Ebay only when we've exhausted our patience in trying to get particular figures.

Assuming we get tons of extras, I'd be open to trading for others to anyone on the forum. Assuming I don't find reasons and ways to kitbash a few.

So what did you guys think of "The Doctor is Sin"? I love the idea that Rusty is trying to get back in the game because he's jealous of his bro. I wish they would have kept him as a supervillain. That would make an awesome stroy arch, and I love seeing the monarch and the venture's working together!

I loved that ep. I'm becoming more and more intrigued by Killinger each time he's featured and he's starting to shoulder his way into my top five characters from the show. Dr.Venture being a super villain would have been cool (at least for a season or half a season), but I think his contentment to stay a nobody wasn't surprising. I have a feeling he and the Monarch will have to team up again at some point in the future. They have the lamest (ie: funniest) super scientist/villain relationship I've ever seen in media.

I loved this one, too.  The new Doctor Who episodes have been pretty disappointing so it's good to know there's still one show on TV that I can really look forward to.  I'm glad they brought Killinger back again.  I believe this was the first time we actually see him kill anyone with his 'magic murder bag'.  I thought the whole point of the joke was that he was actually this wonderful guy with a scary name and costume?  Pretty interesting to see that he was trying to groom Venture into a supervillain.  Maybe this points to some moral choices Venture is going to have to make in the future.

Two episodes so far and both of them home runs.  Killinger was consistently awesome in this episode, his confrontation and pwnage of the "silly billy" Dr. Orpheus was enough to make my jaw drop, and having another episode with the Alchemist's fingerprints on it is always good.

Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Tyrant on June 11, 2008, 01:15:24 PM
I doubt it. Being a nobody riding on the success of the efforts of those who came before him seems to be Dr.Venture's "thing". Although if his brother keeps being the success he is, Rusty may step up to the plate yet, if only to upstage him. He's a very "loser" type personality, and seemingly will only be heroic if it benefits him in some way (usually in a monetary fashion).

It took me awhile to realize something about this episode.  It was bugging me, I watched it twice and something was sticking out, making me notice it, but I couldn't place why it was significant until an hour into work last night.

That detail, bugging the hell out of me, was Brock's hair in the flashbacks.

I kept looking at it saying "why does he have short hair with a single braid sticking out?"

Then suddenly, the "DUH" moment.  He was in the middle of his training during the flashback.  He had Padawan hair.

There was something about Brock's facial features that didn't sit right with me, but it was still an AWESOME episode.

There has been a lot of backstory so far this season. It makes me excited because I feel the backstory must be revealed before the season can get under way...I am ready for one hell of a ride!

Very wise.  So far the episodes this season have been fantastic but they are not for new fans.  You'll have no idea what the hell is going on until you see all the other episodes first.

Three great episodes in a row, it's official, Venture Brothers is the best show on TV right now.  If you disagree I will fight you to the death, Kirk-style.

Dr Impossible and Phantom Limb were office buddies!

Elaboration from Jackson's Blog (http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/22251.html?thread=2443243#t2443243):
Quote
...Now I have to ask the name Prof. Richard Impossible scratched off have anything to do with Colbert's departure or is it just coincidence? ...

jacksonpublick:
Kind of a coincidence, actually--but definitely not some snarky little comment on Colbert's absence. The original draft of the script contained a scene between Impossible and Fantamos in that office in which we learned that Impossible had just been asked to leave the University due to a scandal involving him and a young student named Sally, which had been exposed by one of Fantamos's students--Stevie. The episode ran long and we couldn't get Colbert to do the voice (but still believed we'd be able to get him later in the season), so I cut the scene but left the implication.

Liz Artinian - the SUPER AMAZING cool colorist behind Venture Bros. :)

I assumed it was to screw up the "arching" so that the Monarch wouldn't anything.

Funny stuff, though I'm not sure if I'll like Brock's "son" appearing too many more times.

Most important thing learned at Comic Con?  Venture Bros. fans are insufferable.

Obviously not all of them, but like most things at Comic Con, the biggest fans that were there, the ones asking Q&A questions (and namely the ones sitting near me) were all ginormous asshats.  It was like being at a Kevin Smith Q&A.  Many people who love him, self included, are normal and decent people who can reasonably interact with others in a social environment.  But not the ones who ask the questions.

I, too, just got up to date with the past few episodes.  It's certainly built up quite the roster of characters, hasn't it? For one moment, I thought it was going to slaughter them all.  It's a shame that Colbert couldn't return, but I guess he's too busy with his own show nowadays.  The one thing that does bother me about the show is that some of the voices sound too similar, due to the small vocal cast, but it's only a niggle in an otherwise brilliant show.

The whole point of the Monarch is that his story repeats itself. He's trapped in the eternal cycle that all cartoon villains are. To be fair, they DID have Sgt. Hatred as a major player this season. Not that he was much of a villain, but still. :^)

Yes, but it's repeated with diminished value.  I love the Monarch, but if he's going to do the same things over and over, he's going to become tiresome.  Dr Girlfriend looks pretty hot in the Monarch costume though... :)

The exact source of the hatred wasn't brought up though.  The reason Underbeiht hates Venture was revealed, but Monarch's hatred predates it (as it was one of Monarch's pre-guild archings that actually caused the lab accident)
Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Johnny Unusual on September 07, 2008, 10:49:14 AM
I think it either stemmed from some dick thing that Dr. Venture did without noticing or (more likely)  because who can think of a better arch-nemesis than the greatest boy adventurer who ever lived.  With the Monarch, the hate it real, but it seems that what he really wants is to kill Venture... and that's it.  I mean way back in season one he talks longingly about having an arch as good as Jonas, so it seems he's setting for a has-been.

Frankly, I feel sorry for the Monarch.  As incompetent as he is, he really seems to get what being a villain is all about while the others have just turned it into a impotent game of futility that accomplishes nothing.

I was quite sad when that happened, but I bet he'll be back.  Two of the main characters are a mad scientist and a necromancer.

I'm worried about what they'll do for a Christmas song (http://www.quickstopentertainment.com/2008/12/23/venture-bros/) this year.  21 and 24 are usually heavily involved.

I've only seen the first two episodes of the season, and they were both amazing.  I was worried about Brock leaving the group, but it allows the reformed Sgt. Hatred to have an expanded role, which is great.  I'm looking forward to see Brock's story, but Handsome Ransom was a great episode.  A lot better than the one note joke premise promised.  It also had one of my all time favourite Dr. Mrs. The Monarch/The Monarch exchanges:

"It has it's own signature, like an artist."
"Or... anyone."

Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Johnny Unusual on June 23, 2013, 05:15:12 PM
How come no one is talking about Venture Bros?  It's been killing it this season.  Plus, the last episode has a lot of great plot points:

- Venture and the Monarch knew each other as children?  Then again, with this show it could be a red herring.

- Dean isn't a cutter, but where did he get those scars.  Probably working on H.E.L.Pe.R., like in the last episode.  Looks like Dean entered the world of super-science.

- I don't care what anyone says, I liked the beaver inspector gag.  Maybe it's just I like The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch working together.  It becomes easy to see why they are a couple despite the Monarch's failings.

- What will Gary do now.  I don't think O.S.I. will want him (though they might recognize his skills) and he's not really interested in evil.

BTW, I applaud this show for leaving 24 dead.  I love the character, but I think that it's really help the character of Gary become even stronger.  I also love that the Monarch and "21" had grown so close previously, and now the Monarch is in denial about his exit.

I have to agree, I've loved every episode so far this season.  For some reason I haven't had a strong desire to discuss it, but it definately deserves the praise.  I've been impressed since I got hooked on the show with how dedicated they are to character development in ways that flys in the face of most animated shows.  These characters grow in amazing ways.

I know they will find something awesome to do with Gary. He is a better bodyguard than hatred....

I really hope they answer some of the burning questions about the history of the Monarch and Venture, so I hope the picture wasn't a red herring. I just watched season 7 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and soooooooooooo many questions were answered. Some obvious (Mac's full name), some not so obvious (the waitress's name). And even though It's Always SUnny answered those questions, the show is still great.

My point being, Venture Brothers should go the way of It's Always Sunny and not the way of Lost.

- I don't care what anyone says, I liked the beaver inspector gag.  Maybe it's just I like The Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch working together.  It becomes easy to see why they are a couple despite the Monarch's failings.

This. A billion times. :^) I loved how they made it work (Even despite Dr. Venture knowing the gag) and picked up on each other's cues to keep the charade going.

Wow, not only did we get a Brock-heavy episode, we got a FANTASTIC Brock-heavy episode!  This show has had no missteps this season and this episode was a perfect mix of comedy and bad-ass action adventure.  The one thing I didn't like: the revelation that the Sovereign and Bowie ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON!  That better mean that Bowie is somehow more powerful than the sovereign!  Also, get actual Bowie (no offense to James Urbaniak's bang-up job).

There have been zero missteps this season.  For a show that takes so long between seasons and is so familiar with fans, everything feels better than ever.  Loved the last episode.  It took me a while to buy Doc's... friend, but when I realized it was a callback, it worked really well.  It was also great to see Hank and Dean talking again.  Dean is in a position to be a really annoying character, but the writers deftly sidestep that: yes, he's fed up with all this crap and he's angrier and perhaps a little mean at times, but at the same time, he has shown that he actually cares about Hatred and, in this episode, appreciates Hank as a brother and a friend.  Really curious to see where this leads.

I'm also reminded that a while back it was revealed that Dean was is the biological error to the Guild.  I wonder if that's going to tie into the Investors story arc?

To be fair, that was something the writers admitted they didn't know either.  It was still ambiguous.  That said I'm still upset that Bowie isn't Bowie.  What the Hell?!?

I'll have to watch it again with the Halloween Special in the middle like the bumpers suggested.

Definitely do that. It put the entire thing in context.

BTDubs, they're gonna re-run the season starting Sunday, July 28; if, like me, you had DVR trouble for a couple of episodes, you can re-get the ones you need.

In her Pajiba recap of the top 5 shows appearing on TV last Sunday night, Genevieve Burgess brilliantly describes the central ache of being a fan of The Venture Bros.:

Quote
OH GOD WHY?!? Being a fan of this show is like the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. The seasons are super short, there’s over a year between them, and you can’t even get friends to watch the new episodes with you unless they’ve seen literally every other episode that’s come before because there are no such thing as stand-alone episodes. It’s like designed to lose you friends and make casual acquaintances think you’re crazy. And I’m betting this season finale will make me even more crazy. Cheers.

For me, it was Hank & his Destiny suit and just how awesome wired-Hank was in the jungle. Nevertheless, there's probably a good hundred moments I loved from those 2 months of Venture.

As you can probably tell by my avatar I'm a huge fan of the show. The only thing that still bugs me about the show is Sergeant Hatred, he definitely has his moments but his voice and personality annoy the hell out of me (not to mention the whole ex-pedophile thing). Any way,I thought the new season was great and it felt like an eternity waiting for these episodes. As long as Brock, Dr. Orpheus, and Dr. Killinger continue to appear on new episodes I'm happy.
Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st

Sergeant Hatred has grown on me. He's one of the few characters in the show that seems to really be happy in the place he's in. He's got some regrets, of course, but he loves his job. I like his enthusiasm.

So, are these eight episodes (plus Halloween special) considered the entirety of the fifth season, or is it one of those split-season deals (fellow Breaking Bad fans know what I mean)?
Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Johnny Unusual on September 26, 2013, 11:44:11 PM
I thought it was a split season, but I think it's two seasons but will, hopefully, come out sooner than 3 years.
Title: Re: New Venture Brothers Starting June 1st
Post by: Pak-Man on September 27, 2013, 05:24:18 AM
Yeah. That was officially a whole season. The longer seasons were causing 3 year wait-times for the next ones, so they decided to go shorter. Also, the Halloween special counted as an episode, and the pilot counted as 2.

The creators of the show are inconsistent to say the least when it comes to conforming to the standard season/episode framework that other shows follow. I don't blame them, it's their prerogative to release the shows when ever they feel like it, if I had it my way there would be a new episode every week for ever.

That was a great episode.  Despite the new status quo, it actually feels a bit like a palate cleanser in that it's a lot simpler than a lot of the episodes in construction (and gag construction) than a lot of episodes (certainly more than the last special).

So I'm looking at some Adult Swim cartoons on Netflix DVD and this show along with Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show, Harvey Birdman, Futurama, and Squidbillies look like they could be funny.. Got Robot Chicken up to Season 4 and plan on getting 5 & 6 but 7 is only available for sale, and season 8 is not available at all on DVD ???
Any other recommendations? :o

I love every one of those shows and suspect you would as well. Early Adult Swim captures a lot of the weird energy that made Space Ghost so great. I would add Sealab 2021 (At least the first 2 volumes) to the list. There are a lot of other Adult Swim shows that I love, but they're way less accessible.

I love Sealab 2021, so I second the recommendation. The later episodes do lose a step, but there was no real avoiding it as one of the main cast had passed away. They did the best with what they had though.

Season 7 starts tomorrow!

So we picked up "Go Team Venture! The Art of the Venture Bros." I was expecting a big coffee table book full of pretty pictures with maybe a few captions, but this thing is like an in-depth director's commentary for everything Venture Bros. from the conception of the show to the present. Totally worth the $27 it's going for on Amazon.
