CLUE: Online - Game One

Ladies And Gentlemen,
Thank you for joining me here in the Study.

As you all know, Mr. Boddy was found dead just a few short hours ago; a victim of foul play!

Since then, all of your individual efforts have proven invaluable. Each of your investigations have turned up an impressive amount of evidence, which you now hold in your possession. However, the police are most certainly on their way here, to Tudor Mansion. And I believe it is imperative that we all begin to work together in order to expose the murderer in out midst before they arrive.

I suggest that we leave the Study one at a time beginning with Miss Scarlet, and search the Mansion for the final pieces of evidence. It is now up to you to find out: Who did it, Where, and with What Weapon!

Can I move to G6 and enter the lounge?

I'm still not sure if I get this :)

*edit Do I make a suggestion now? I don't have 3 moves left.

Miss Scarlet has moved from A2 to the Lounge... and seems to understand perfectly!
Since she does not have enough moves left to make a Suggestion, her turn is now over.

Please make yourself comfortable, Miss Scarlet. Feel free to pour yourself a drink while the other guests explore the Mansion. You will find that Mr. Boddy has had excellent taste in liquor, and the cabinet is fully stocked. However, another guest may call you into any Room at any time... so stay alert!

Next: Colonel Mustard will begin his turn from H17.

As a homosexual, I feel no shame in moving to the conservatory, as being gay means that I'm probably the only one here that knows what function a conservatory actually serves in a mansion.

I believe I have enough moves to make a suggestion... correct?

EDIT: Never mind.. the wall next to T1 looks too much like a door. My guess is i'm actually right outside the door to the conservatory now.

Mr. Green, uh... hmmm.

Well, thank you for being so... straight forward. Oh, I'm sorry. I, uh... didn't mean to say straight. Hmmm. Thank you for being so direct with all of us regarding your personal life. I'm quite sure we are all pleased to learn that you intend on hiding absolutely nothing from us.

However, your march past the Ballroom towards the Conservatory is most curious. You are certainly a man on a mission. I'm sure that your intentions will reveal themselves in time.

I'm also very sorry that the map I have provided of Tudor Mansion is confusing. The entrances to each room are as follows:

The Study: E6
The Hall: E8, H5, H6
The Lounge: G6
The Library: I1, L3
The Dining Room: I6, M5
The Billiard Room: L1, P1
The Conservatory: T1
The Ballroom: T3, Q4, Q9, T4
The Kitchen: R11

In addition, Mr. Boddy often found a way to travel from one corner of the Mansion to another in just a matter of moments. Although, i was never quite sure how he did this. It was certainly very curious, indeed.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me.

Man, I could have gone in the ballroom. Maybe the name brought up a latent phobia, but I missed that I could have gone in there.

Would you be terribly offended if I spruced up the board graphic so it's easier to read?

EDIT: Sorry, couldn't help myself, I was going to make it for my own use and figured I should just post it.

I think it would be absolutely brilliant if you were to spruce up the graphic!

And, if no one has any objections, I'm not opposed to allowing you a do-over. This is only the first game, and we're all just finding our footing. Of course, even if you were to enter the Ballroom on this turn... you'd still have to wait until your next turn to make a Suggestion. There are certain advantages to being in the Conservatory, after all.

It's entirely up to you Mr. Green.

Mrs. Peacock moves from s1 to t3, thereby blocking anyone from entering that one room that does that one thing where a murder may or may not have been committed by someone.

all THAT being said, my turn is now over.

Miss Scarlet, your move.

Miss Scarlet is going to make a suggestion and forfeit her other moves.  On the one hand, I do think that priss Mr. Green must be hiding something (not attracted to a belle like myself? Surely you jest.), but I don't think him a killer.  Even though he's stalking me, the Colonel is a Southerner like myself and us Southerners just have too much pride to resort to murder.

On the other of my delicate Southern hands, I think Mrs. White is definitely hiding something. Strutting around the mansion like she is. Charlatan. I do declare that I think she killed Mr. Boddy in this here lounge with that candlestick on the table over there.

after lounging for a bit, the mustard feels that he is making the charming southern belle uncomfortable so the mustard walks around the room and seems to discover a secret passage to the conservatory.  after taking it, the mustard to believes that something is amiss with mrs. white and believes that she did it in here amidst this sun-lit room with the revolver.

the mustard does hope that the miss scarlet does recover shortly.

Interesting. Mrs. Peacock chose to block an entrance to the Ballroom, rather than enter it. Colonel Mustard has forsaken the Lounge for the Conservatory. And poor Mrs. White... her name has been dragged through the mud on two separate occasions. Not to mention the fact that she, herself, has been dragged into the Conservatory, and will have to begin her next move from that room!

That is, of course... after she tells us whether Colonel Mustard's Suggestion is without merit.

Wow. High drama at the Roundtable. Hmmm...

I figured that some people don't visit the message board over the weekend. So i was going to cut some slack before changing the rules. But i think from now on, if someone doesn't respond after 24hours... i'll announce whether they can disprove a Suggestion, Private Message the other player with their evidence, and they'll lose their turn to move.

For now though, let me see if GregMcDuck would like to step in as Mrs. White for the rest of the game. If not, i'll take over on Evidence duty and we'll leave her sitting in a room somewhere.

Oh, and Colonel Mustard... Mrs. White can disprove your Suggestion. I'll PM you with the evidence.
Mr. Green, please proceed.

Just because one person happened to leave without even telling anyone in an uncommon case of "drama" is no reason to put a 24 hour time limit on responses, in my opinion. People do have lives beyond the board, more often on the weekends as you suggested, and of course Life(tm) occasionally 'happens' and you just gotta take care of stuff.

I would say a limit of 48 hours is better. I don't see many 24+ hour silences happening in any case, since I think we're all fairly conscious of our little gaming commitment here, but the 48 hour limit at least gives us that "busy / sick day" leeway, just in case, and I, for one, am in no great rush. I'm all for reasonable response times, but I'm also for enjoying a relaxed, naturally flowing game pace.

I'm sorry to say, Mrs. Peacock, that while your imagination is as colorful as your name suggests, your dazzling bird's-brain has unfortunately produced an erroneously colored picture of the situation at hand. In short, I can disprove your assertion, birdy.

Now, I suppose I shall move onward from this Conservatory that I have been so unceremoniously dragged into, so that I may observe the situation from the Ballroom. It would seem to me that it is possible Miss Scarlet, with her love of intoxication and scandalously loose dancing, might enjoy the sight of Mr. Boddy swinging, just as loosely, high in the air from a chandelier by a Rope around his neck.

Well, I never!  It is clearer than dew on a snake's belly that I never touched Mr. Boddy.  Ok, there was that once, but he was more than alive when I left and we both had too much to drink.  With a name like Mr. Boddy a girl just has to know.   But alas, I cannot disprove your theory.

I do hear that Profesor Plum always fils his ballroom., and his events are never small.  The social pages say he's got the biggest balls of all.  A girl would be quite silly to leave.

Since I'm in the ballroom dears,  I will suggest to y'all that the whoarishly flamboyant Mrs. Peacock did it right here. . . I'm also going to suggest that she was the one who killed Mr. Boddy with the rope.  I'm sure she always carries one with her.  Tying him to the wall is the only way she can keep a man for more than a minute.

Yes, unfortunately Mrs. White is unable to continue her investigation. Feel free to continue on without her. And if any of her evidence can prove useful to your investigation, I will be more than happy to provide it to you.

Mustard is not in the Billiards Room. He is in the Conservatory.

The question now is how to handle the error now that the suggestion has already been responded to.

1) no repeat on suggestion. that would result in 2 answered suggestions in 1 turn.
2) where to be placed? ballroom or conservatory? I would say conservatory where he should've been.
3) do we initiate penalties (in the future) for not keeping up with where the characters are? Granted Wadsworth was also at fault as the moderator and stand-in for Mrs. White, but if another player responds to an erroneous suggestion without being certain of the player movement themselves, they would also create an error that may grant an advantage. I would suggest that as long as no responses to the erroneous suggestion are made, the player whose turn it is can simply redo their move/suggestion. However if someone responds with any info (be it a clue to disprove the suggestion, or a lack of clues to disprove the suggestion) then both the player whose turn it is, and the player(s) who respond to the erroneous suggestion, all lose 1 turn.

example of error creating advantage: now that mustard's suggestion has been made and responded to, if we leave him in the billiards room, he has the advantage of moving swiftly to the library or ballroom next turn and making another suggestion. if he gets pulled back to the conservatory, he gets the free suggestion response from the billiards room and can move from the conservatory to either the lounge or ballroom for other quick suggestions.

while it seems he would have a move + suggestion in one turn in either case and thus seem like "not a big deal", the point here is that if he had been intent on going to the billiard's room to make the suggestion, he would have had to move there (again) this turn and wait (again) until next turn to make his suggestion. so in that sense he's been given a free move+suggestion this turn, even though he could have opted to stay in the conservatory or move to the ballroom or lounge and make a suggestion. the advantage then is that he was "given" the billiards room without a new sacrifice of a suggestion during the turn due to movement requirements.

Waddy, darling, I think these rooms need to be more clearly marked.  I was trying to find a restroom earlier and ended up in Mr. Boddy's study.

I fear the stress and dark, creeky mansion is getting to us all.

But, do forgive for relieving myself on Mr. Boddy's copy of War and Peace.  He won't be needing it anymore anyway.

I will get you your beer, Colonel. Maybe it will help you think more clearly.  A true Southerner needs to be a liquored up to be in top form.

ok, let me do that over, cause i forgot about that whole rule of dragging people back to the room in which they are accused and i will merely move back to the billiards room...again...and end my turn without making any suggestions...

i think we should only instill penalties if someone does it again. It is hard to remember that someone else has moved you without an actual board to look on

i think we should only instill penalties if someone does it again. It is hard to remember that someone else has moved you without an actual board to look on

That's what I suggested basically:

3) do we initiate penalties (in the future) for not keeping up with where the characters are?

Anyway, personally, I keep up with all movement, be it from the player or from a suggestion, in a simple text file.

As for this...

ok, let me do that over, cause i forgot about that whole rule of dragging people back to the room in which they are accused and i will merely move back to the billiards room...again...and end my turn without making any suggestions...

...I'm fine with this suggestion (no pun intended), since although you still get a move+response out if it, it was only a partial response that we all benefitted from. Since no clue was presented as a definite rebuttal to the suggestion that only you, and not we, would see in a private message, the playing field will remain even enough.

So, what's the official ruling, Wadsworth?
Title: Re: CLUE: Online (Game One - In Progress)
Post by: Rude on May 27, 2008, 08:38:54 AM
...

The official ruling is that i'm an idiot.

I should have caught that mistake as both the Host and as a Player. The fact that every part of that Suggestion was in bold except the Room actually stuck out at me, but i blew it off and replied anyway without checking. Thankfully, the only Player at a disadvantage in this particular case would be Mrs. White, who isn't currently with us. But that is about to change actually... more on that later.

We'll allow Colonel Mustard to move to the Billiard Room, and end his turn there.

Sorry again, everyone! At the end of the game i'll keep this thread open for suggestions about the game itself, rules, penalties, etc. I'd like to hear what you guys thought, and what we can do to make the game play better. There's nothing like playing it through once to work out all the bugs, ya' know?

Apparently she feels that she is ready to continue her investigation. I'm sure she understands that, at this late in the game, she is at a distinct disadvantage. However, I'd ask that you all welcome her back with open arms. We can all certainly use her help while trying to solve this horrible mystery.

Mrs. White, I believe that the last time we saw you was in the Conservatory. If you're certain that you are ready to continue, please proceed...

Well shoot, i was hoping that we'd have this all wrapped up by now. Unfortunately, i'll be leaving for Graceland early tomorrow morning, and won't be back until sometime Sunday night. I won't be traveling with a laptop, and i'm not sure whether the Heartbreak Hotel has any sort of internet access... Although, i've heard that they have a computer in the lobby.

Anyway, now that i'm not filling in for a player... i'm sure the game will run pretty smoothly. However, you guys are certainly close to solving the first game here. So if there are any forum regulars out there reading this, i'd like to PM you the Case File in case someone makes an Accusation. If you feel like helping me out, just PM me.

Of course, it will be pretty obvious whether an Accusation is right or wrong. But i don't want to hold up the game just in case i can't get to the forum for the next coupla' days. If i can get online though, i'll post here and let you all know.

It seems that Mr. Green has become quite enamored with the Ballroom. I understand that he was light on his feet, but I doubt anyone could dance to the music of AC/DC for that long. I certainly haven't seen him for over a day now, and apparently some of the other guests are getting restless! So allow me to take a look at the evidence he has collected...

Hmmmm. It seems that Mr. Green would be quite unable to disprove Mrs. White's Suggestion.

I know that Chris practically lives online. So i hope everything is okay.

Now the question is whether he will loose his next turn. I'm going to say "No," unless anyone else objects. That rule wasn't in place when everyone signed up, a few people didn't seem to like it, and there was no real damage done this time around. Of course, we can discuss rule changes after this game is over. But for now, let's play nicey-nice.

If anyone has a really good point though, and wants to object... go ahead and PM me about it. That way we won't have to out you in front of everyone as a meanie! <joke!>

Well Mrs. White, it appears to me that Mr. Green's Suggestion has already been disproved by Miss Scarlet. And we are now actually waiting for Mrs. Peacock to continue with her investigation.

As for Colonel Mustard... I have access to the evidence in his possession. Mrs. White has Accused Professor Plum of murdering Mr. Boddy in the Lounge with the Rope.

Now an Accusation is a very harsh thing, as you all know. One of you have finally, and actually, called another guest a murderer! This is no search for evidence, this is no quest for that final clue... and there is no going back. Mrs. White is stating here and now, before us all, that Professor Plum used that Rope to strangle the life out of our host, right here in the Lounge of Tudor Mansion.

And so, the question before us is not whether one particular point in Mrs. White's Accusation is true or not. But whether the evidence collected amongst all of you can prove her entire hypothesis right... or wrong.

Well then, do one of you here tonight hold even a single piece of evidence... a single clue, that can disprove Mrs. White's Accusation?

Allow me take a look at the evidence that each of you have managed to collect during your investigation. I ask you all to trust and confide in me as I meet with each of you here; for we may finally have the answer to this terrible mystery... these may be the final clues we need to solve Mr. Boddy's murder!

...

...

Mrs. White - I'm sorry to say that you're Accusation is incorrect. You simply have not collected all the pieces to this terrible puzzle. Not only have you made a tremendous mistake with your Accusation, but you have lost all of our trust in you. You may simply be confused... or you may be trying to cover up the truth of this crime. But I'm afraid that I must ask you to stop your investigation immediately, and simply share the evidence in your possesion with the other guests from now on. Please remain where you are until called upon by another guest.

Of course, I'll be happy to continue to serve you. But you'll understand if I prefer to bring the hounds when you call.

I suggest Prof Plum in the Library with the Rope.

(Nobody say they can refute the claim til Waddy or Rude makes a Post since I'm bot sure if A) It's Kosher I went ahead and skipped Green's turn, and B) I am not sure if my calculations on the doors were correct)

It seems that Mr. Green has gone missing! I'll begin searching the grounds immediately. However, I believe that the murderer may become desperate during these final hours. For he, or she, is sure to be exposed very soon. So please be careful during your investigations, and keep a close eye on those around you. We can't afford to be careless when we're so close to learning the truth!

Meanwhile, Mrs. Peacock has managed to find her way to the Library.

Thanks to the masterful investigation and solid deductive reasoning of Mrs. Peacock we have managed to solve this horrible murder... And just in the nick of time, as the police have finally arrived here at Tudor Mansion.

We can be confident as we turn Professor Plum over the the authorities. For we all know that it was he who strangled the life from Mr. Boddy with a rope, here in his own Billiard Room. We've collected the evidence, solved the mystery, and now we can finally put this terrible event behind us!

Thank you all for help. And especially to Mrs. Peacock... who is truly a Master Detective!

Don't forget to thank Colonel Mustard as well, since we all know Mustard and Peacock were working together.
In round 2, Mustard ignored the Lounge because he knew Peacock already had that evidence.
In round 3, Peacock ignored the Ballroom because she knew Mustard already had that evidence.
In round 4, Mustard gets a free pass to the billiard room, but would've ended up there anyway I suppose.
In round 5, Mustard suggests Peacock in the Billiard room in order to pull her into those hard to reach rooms, all the way from the Lounge, "because the mustard desires company". Indeed.

At no point in the game did Peacock suggest evidence held by Mustard. Mustard did suggest two pieces of evidence Peacock held. Once in round 5 when he helped Peacock reach the Billiard Room and thus wasn't making a serious suggestion anyway, and once in round 6 when he was apparently just making a random suggestion to intentionally fail so that Peacock could make the serious suggestion and win.

So let's hear it for the team of Mustard & Peacock. We've finally put an end to this interminable game. And can move on to Game 2. And this time, hopefully get players that won't bail on us, get washed away by flooding, or who are personally involved with each other (had I known this beforehand, I would have raised an objection) and thus can't actually be trusted not to share info.

Yea. If Flock y and I cheat, wouldn't we have won every game of mafia so far, since all but one game we played together (oddly enough, the one game I opted out of, he won)

Nothing I can say in my defense except I play this game a lot (well simpsons version) and I had a good strategy going into the game. Flocky had no strategy anywhere in this game. Allow me to demonstrate. I figured out it was Prof Plum early on ( I was accusing in order). I went to specific rooms I had the info on, which is why i skipped certain ones. Then whthat's false accusation gave me the idea to see if the rope was the weapon. Pure luck that was. And then I had to find the room. I was close to the billiards room, and by luck again, that proved to be it.

Don't worry, Flocky def won't be playing the next game. He hated this one

monopoly is my game, just when it goes for a few weeks, without any easily accessible visual aids (i.e. a game board) it can get a bit tiring...plus i worked overtime last week and only having one day off in 15 is a bit tiring...

I also had used deduction to get 3 cards and knew it was Plum unless Green had the card before I joined as Mrs. White.  So I don't doubt that Peacock and Mustard  were playing fair.

For making it better:
- Maybe an updated image to allow people to see were their character is. (This avoiding the "Where is my character?" posts)
- 24 hour rule seems like a good idea. A smaller time period would be nice but likely unfair.
- Current Move system seems good.  I dice system in the RL game is probably the best system to prevent room jumping but is difficult to impossible to implement.
- Defiantly not more players.  Maybe fewer.  Seam to remember the RL game being 4-6 players (maybe 3 min?).
- In order to streamline maybe have the moderator give the refute cycle the next time he/she is on if it hasn't taken care of itself.  For example:
     Scarlet makes suggestion
     Mustard post he can't refute
Wadsworth comes on before White: Wadsworth post who can't refute till someone can and then it is still their job to send the PM
It would be added work for the moderator but would speed up the game IMHO

Another suggestion, is we sign up and then pick a date to play the entire game that night.

I like the idea of a game board where to see the pieces. I never realised how important visual aides were to this game.

Well, Mafia is a completely different beast altogether.  In Clue, you could totally cheat by teaming up with someone and sharing your answers.  But in Mafia, the only thing that teaming up will do is have one less person pointing a gun at you.  The mafia, vigilantes, and citizens could still kill you off regardless of if you form an alliance with someone else.  So, your statement that you would've won every game of mafia by teaming up with Flock is laughable.  Just sayin'.
