Title: What Shall I Read Now?
Post by: anais.jude on May 05, 2008, 09:14:40 AM
Well, school is done. What shall I read; I have been waiting so long to read something non-school related, I can't decide.
I will be participating the next rifftrax book club selection as well.

My vote goes to Gaiman. I haven't read American Gods (or anything of his) but the spec. fiction guy will always get the nod with me.

I've read American Gods, and it was pretty good.  Made me want to visit the House on the Rock.

I'd probably recommend Mind over Matters if I'd read it yet, but of what I've actually had in my own collection, definitely recommend American Gods.  Great read.

A Canticle for Leibowitz (http://www.amazon.com/Canticle-Leibowitz-Walter-Miller-Jr/dp/0553273817/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210189703&sr=8-1)*, plus whichever Bukowski book we settle on.

I like Anansi Boys (http://www.amazon.com/Anansi-Boys-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0060515198/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210189960&sr=1-1) much more than American Gods.

*Which I was thinking would be a good Bookclub selection thought maybe Earth Abides (http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Abides-George-R-Stewart/dp/0345487133/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b) would be better. And hey Amazon agrees with me (http://www.amazon.com/Canticle-Leibowitz-Walter-Miller-Jr/dp/0060892994/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210189703&sr=8-2) on their overlapping themes #

#I know that gores against my general rule on speculative fiction.

It all depends on what you want.

American Gods is a well-recognized fantasy mythological mish-mash. Anansi Boys is possibly one of the funniest books I've ever read, and doesn't get nearly enough publicity in my view. Abarat is a fantasy lover's fantasy novel. Sabriel is an intriguing and original young adult fantasy novel with lots of necromancy and undead things. Nix's Keys to the Kingdom Series (starting with Mister Monday) is creative, fun, fast-paced, and addictive.
