Title: RIFFTRAX PLAYOFFS HEAT 1
Post by: JonnyFrag on November 18, 2006, 03:45:33 AM
Ok heat one (of 6) of the First Rifftrax Playoffs. I ended up using 2 other movies from the old playoffs poll , one to make an nice even number and one because I had a mistake and listed a movie twice in my generator.
Pairings were randomized by a sequence generator, so some heats are more competitive than others, but I think was the fair way to do it. Besides, the non-winners this time can just be entered into the next playoffs.

Please vote, campaign, post yard signs whatever. Election day ends on Thanksgiving, and the winners will be advanced into the next round.

I was under the impression that we were going to have straight up match-ups and bracketing ala the NCAA basketball tourney.

I guess this way would be a bit easier.

Vote Billy Jack!  A lot of these other movies seem like the type that they would eventually do anyway, and may even be on the drawing board.  So don't waste your vote on something that may very well be the next Rifftrax anyway!

Come on ladies and gentlemen, Don't you want to see that cinematic hack Michael Bay get the "treatment"?

Had to go with my nomination, Street Fighter...

We need some Van Damme

Plus any movie that actually killed one of it's actors (We miss you and your nuts Raul Julia) deserves to be taken apart

Is anyone else experiencing the same hardship as me with this thing?

A bunch of films I want to see riffed are all grouped together in the same Heats.

Why must you torment me so.  :'(

The heats are the preliminary to bracketed playoffs.

I voted for Street Fighter, by the way.  A truly awesome bad movie.

How many from each heat advance to the next round?  6 heats doesn't work too well to come up with the right numbers for a tourney bracket (16,32, or 64).

Cast my vote for Armageddon.  Michael Bay deserves to be knocked down a few pegs.  Plus, you get the extra bad acting from Ben Affleck.  Any Affleck movie that isn't directed by Kevin Smith is bound to be terrible.  Just look at Pearl Harbor and Gigli (hope it's spelled right)

What about Good Will Hunting? That was pretty good.

I didn't say they were terrible, but bound to be terrible. I will admit though that not all Affleck does is bad.  Its either hit or miss. Most of the time it's miss. Just look at some of his films: Pearl Harbor, Gigli, Surviving Christmas. All are rifftrax worthy. I would just like to see Affleck get his do. Plus, by picking Armageddon, Michael Bay get what he deserves also.  It's like killing two birds with one stone.

Affleck was pretty good in Hollywoodland - very understated for once. And he was okay in Shakespeare In Love, I think. It's been a long time since I watched it. And don't forget his star turn as "basketball player #10" in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie.

I would have liked to do it that way, but the downside is having around 32 unique polls, and that is a ton to keep bumped and or stickied. It could be done easier on a webpage, but I am way too lazy busy to do that.

I voted for Twister, but I must have missed Volcano.  Boy did I hate this movie:

Small Child:  Lava, what beats that.

doe Eyed Girl:  My dad.

I cringe everytime I think of that line.

Go Twister! Go Twister!

(Man, did I ever hate that movie with the heated passion of a million burning suns.)

Haven't gotten that part figured out yet. It will likely be broken down to the top X from each bracket, then randomly paired against each other one on one. Math is hard...

gotta' go with Street Fighter.

A) the movie takes place on an island called "Shadaloo" and throughout the film characters occasionally SHOUT "Shadaloo."

B) it features jean-claude van damme with an american flag tattoo, despite his obviously broken english. at one point he pronounces the word "probably" as "prow-BAB-lee".

Here's what we do: The top two of every heat goes through.  The winners of their respective heats will playoff on a runner-up of another heat.  Then we have 6 movies left, we do a three movie semi-final, leaving two to duke it out in the final.

To make this a cross-board thing, I think someone else should handle that though.  I started it, Jonny took it up, someone else should finish.

Any takers?

Cheesy Atari 800 graphics, ludicrous premise, that would be Superman IV.

That could be a RiffTrax theme trilogy - utterly wrong accents.

Guys,

given the track record for movies riffed by Rifftrax, I just don't see Street Fighter as being on the menu.

Sure, it deserves it, and would be hilarious, but look at what's been done so far.

It would have to get thousands of votes to win out over all the current movies that Rifftrax no doubt wants to get their riffing paws on.

It's just gonna be difficult, is all I'm sayin'.

I'm a huge X-Files fan, yet I voted for the movie.
Mike and TB's did some quick riffing on it in one of their "Annual Blockbuster Review" specials. I'd like to see the whole movie get riffed.

Based on your idea above here is a possible bracketing for the remainder of the tourney:

Round 2:
W1-R6
W2-R5
W3-R4
W4-R3
W5-R2
W6-R1

(W= winner of each heat, R=1st runner up of each heat)

Round 3:
(W1-R6)-(W3-R4)-(W5-R2)
(W2-R5)-(W4-R3)-(W6-R1)

Final Round:
Top finisher in each 3rd round heat.

That looks really good to me...Monty, are you willing to handle setting up the Round 2 polls?  If not, I'll volunteer.

I'd rather someone else do this, if it's all the same.  I'm afraid I'd muck it up somehow.

OK, I'll head up the next round of polls then.  With the holidays going on, I can't promise they will be up right away, but I'll do what I can.
