Title: Upcoming Ronin Fox Trax
Post by: RoninFox on April 06, 2008, 03:40:02 PM
For those of you asking, yes I changed the name.  Turns out "Foxtrax" has been several different things, including the glowing hockey pucks on NHL broadcasts and some kind of car navigation software or something, so I made the name a little more specific.

Oh, you weren't asking that, you were asking what the hell this is.

I figured I'd make a topic on the fan-riffs I'm working on as they go.  Instead of making a new topic every time I'll just try and keep this one as updated as possible, with all the upcoming, planed, in-production, and released tracks on this first post.  Some of these I've already blabbed about or hinted at, but I'd like to keep a couple secrets here or there, so don't be surprised to see a few question marks pop up as placeholders.

My initial track (Foxtrax presents: He-Man She-Ra The Secret of the Sword) will remain available for free.

(Free to download, available on DivShare, just click above to reach download page)
(Any known NTSC DVD copy should be compatible, including disc one of "The Best of She-Ra Princess of Power")

All other tracks are currently available on iRiffs.

Star Trek:  The Motion Picture (With Draccu) (http://www.rifftrax.com/iriffs/ronin-fox-trax/ronin-fox-trax-star-trek-motion-picture)

Short:  Pearl of the Orient (http://www.rifftrax.com/iriffs/ronin-fox-trax/ronin-fox-trax-pearl-orient)

Are you riffing them on your own? 'cause if so, it seems RoninTrax would suit you perfectly.  :)

I'm..."acquiring" secret of the sword right now.
Title: Re: Upcoming Ronin Fox Trax

Some of them (including Secret of the Sword) are/will be solo riffs, but there will be guests too.  Both Nightmare on Elm Street riffs so far have guests (Current friend/roommate Matt "DraCCu" Hampton for part 1 and current friend/former roommate "Nykk" Andrews for part 2) and DraCCu might be joining me again for Star Trek:  The Motion Picture, nothing set in stone there yet.

Edit:  also, I remember I did think about RoninTrax at one point, but that would give me the same initials as Rifftrax, meaning I couldn't abbreviate on here without confusing or annoying people.  Ronin Fox Trax gives me a little extra leeway, RFT doesn't stand for anything riffing related yet.  (Though it can also mean reliable file transfer, relational frame theory, and recycle florida today) This is a similar reason to why I didn't go with Ronin Riffs, or something like that. Raven's Riffs started before me and I don't want to be the "other RR".   ;D

I really liked The Secret of the Sword riff.  Looking forward to the others.   Any future plans you want script submissions for?

Thanks.  Secret of the Sword was a lot of fun, and more importantly I learned a lot about what to do and not do with it.

For right now I'd like to keep the writing between me and the guests, but I am probably going to do at least one round table style riff.  Thinking about one over this summer, and I'm open to suggestions for a good one.  Already been pondering over the ones you and Greg suggested on the FAN RIFFING  (http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,3745.75.html)thread

Quick update.  Over this past weekend we had a little sneak preview of the first two Nightmare on Elm Street riffs in their current state.  While part 2 seems to be right on target, it seems part 1 still needs quite a bit of work.  As I'm doing the audio editing on my own, and I'm pretty inexperienced with such things, I'm going through a lot of fun "learning experiences".

Also some of the jokes just got no laughs whatsoever, so there's likely to be some re-recording with better ones this weekend.   ;D

So random thoughts and wanderings led me down a fun road.  While looking through my dvds pondering potential riffs I came across this little almost forgotten gem.

It's still available, and very tempting.  The only question is, would it be worth the trouble to record it, how many would actually pick up a copy of a 1943 serial for a riff?

I'd be willing to pick it up if I didn't have it already.  ;D

Release of Freddy vs. Ronin round 1:  Ronin Fox Trax presents Nightmare on Elm Street is imminant.  Final recording and hopefully final editing took place days ago, I need to run a test to make sure the sync is on and I'll be ready to go.  I've also decided that at least for now, my riffs will remain free, first post edited to reflect that.

PS, I've noticed I've had several downloads on the Secret of the Sword riff recently, thanks to the newcomers.   ;)

It has been released.  Click here to download it or go to http://www.geocities.com/roninfoxtrax (http://www.geocities.com/roninfoxtrax) and laugh at my horrible looking website-in-progress.

(Only NTSC for now, need to find out if the PAL version is a different cut from this)

Did a final sync test on Nightmare 2 last night.  It's ready for the home stretch.  There's still a little bit left to do, mostly fixing the volume in a couple places, but it should be ready to be released by the end of the week.

Quick question, do you think I should stick to just updating this thread, or should I open up a new thread for each release to get a little more attention for them?

I'd start a new thread for each release when you get them ready for release.  I don't think you need one for individual projects that aren't finished unless you're looking for help for them.

This would be a good place to announce upcoming riffs, but like raven said, start a new thread for each track.  Its what us Bastards do.  Hell, we don't even announce new tracks till they're ready to go.

Now, does anyone know a good way to make a YouTubable sample?  I can't quite figure it out.

If it's a 40s serial then the copyright is probably dead and you can upload it onto youtube.

Very simple, if you have Nero or Roxio, or some other re-encoding software.  Reauthor a DVD with the riff audio mixed in, and then import the DVD folder files in your re-encoding software.  The edit the movie, and pick the part that you want as a sample, and then save as either a FLV or MP4 .  For a five minute clip, you're looking at possibly 15 to 60 MB.  Then just upload that file in YT, and in a couple hours it should be ready to go.

I actually already looked it up, and Columbia Pictures renewed the copyright in 1971, Sony Pictures owns it now.

While doing research on Star Trek The Motion Picture (needing a break from actually writing the riff of this...thing) I came across something equal parts fantastic and disappointing.

I've only seen a couple episodes of the Star Trek Animated Series, but now I realize I need to see more.  You see, Majel Barret is already all over Star Trek.  She played Troi's mom in the Next Generation, and before that she'd been on screen several times and heard even more as she was the nameless first officer in the pilot episode, Nurse Chapel throughout the original series, and the computer voice.  I had no idea who else she had played though, a character who Gene Roddenberry had apparently tried to get her to reprise for the Motion Picture.

Lt. M'Ress.  There was a furry on the Enterprise!

Oh I'm sorry, she's not a mere furry, she's a Caitian...from the planet Cait...because adding an i makes it all alieny.

I almost had a furry character to mock in this movie, but Majel decided against putting on the fur and tail.

Damn.  It would have been great to see a resolution to this.

Yup, Scotty almost got a little...okay on second thought I won't finish that joke.

My Star Trek 1 script is finally done, though there's still editing work for when I get scripts from the other contributors.  Already though, this is my most riff-packed script.  As it is I have twice as many lines in this than in my last riff.  As hard as this movie was to get through in the writing process I'm really looking forward to recording it, and I'm not slowing down on writing either.  I'm starting my next script (a project that's leaked out to a handful of you so far) in the next couple days and I'm hoping to get both riffs recorded in August.  Possibly with a return of Nightmare 2's guest-riffer Nykk.

Editing underway on the once large and now massive script for Star Trek The Motion Picture.  From the look of it recording on the next two riffs will be taking place the week of August 17th, as I'll have the week off from the "real" job and both my lined up guest riffers will be available.  The hope is to get them edited and ready for release before the month is out, but as always life keeps me from making such guarantees.

Been awhile since I updated this thread, so just a general update.

Recording has concluded on Star Trek The Motion Picture, and with the recent developments it is set to be my first iRiffs offering.  So as soon as the upload page is up and running keep an eye out for it.

I'm planning on a price of $1.99 for the movie riffs.  There's likely to be a few shorts releases coming up, but none of them are set in stone yet and the price will have to be discussed later, once I know if I'm riffing them solo or alone, how long they are, etc.

The first part of recording has already taken place for Last Unicorn, and I'm editing and planning on further recording while waiting to release Star Trek.

More info to come.  Hammering out the details for my guest riffer on Nightmare on Elm Street 3.  It will be someone new.  And of course I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's work on Masters of the Universe scripts.  (Less than a month before the deadline)

I'll do a PAL version for every movie I riff whenever possible.  Already have one tested for this riff, and though I need to record a slightly different bit of opening instructions for it, it should be ready immediately when the riff is released.

Setback!  Unfortunately I just ended up losing a significant amount of my Last Unicorn riff.  Though I thought it was close to completion, it looks like I'm going to need a big re-record session this weekend.  In the meantime I'm also working on a short which I might try and record in the same session.  Since I'll be riffing the short solo, I might even get to release it first to tide you guys over.  Title and poster for the short will be released/unveiled soon.

Some interesting things I've found out about Last Unicorn in the meantime.

1.  Apparently Peter S. Beagle (who is the author of the original book and screenwriter for the movie) has had a history of getting screwed over by this movie.  Basically, the dvd releases to date have not given him a cent in royalties which he is supposed to be entitled to.  The first release several years back, which beyond being a crappy pan and scan version with bad sound, didn't give him a dime.  The better 25th anniversary edition that you can find on shelves now also don't give him a dime if bought from a store, but you CAN buy it online from http://www.conlanpress.com/ (http://www.conlanpress.com/) and order it for $15 and support him.  About half of the money for the sale goes directly to Peter, and a portion of it goes to his lawyer fund to help him get the rest of the money he deserves.  Even as I rip this movie apart verbally, allow me to recommend you buy your DVD copy there.  If you really like the movie, you can even get it autographed for ten bucks more.  There's also more from Peter available on the website, including the original book and various other books and Last Unicorn concept artwork.

2.  The 25th anniversary edition in the US was made with a German PAL master, so though I still need to test this theory, it's possible that one version of this riff will be compatible with BOTH NTSC and PAL versions of the DVD.

(PS, Peter's been screwed over on his work more than once it seems, as he's also the screenwriter for Bakshi's Lord of the Rings animated film.  The studio only payed him $5,000 for his work with the word of one of the producers that it would lead to more profitable work later.  Naturally that producer never hired Peter again.  No wonder he hasn't done a feature film since '82.)

Work is wrapping up on Last Unicorn (finally). It might be inviting a curse to say such a thing, but it should be out before the year ends.  Next up I'll be working on my part of the big Lost City project, then Masters of the Universe.  There may or may not be another short in the meantime as well.

Oh, yeah you totally cursed yourself.  Please mention something in the MOU riff about how the battle hardened warrior woman looses her lunch at the thought of eating ribs.  It's so ludicrous.  Hope you got a good Dolph Lundgren impression, if not, just bash your head with a brick a few times that should clear it up.

I'm pretty sure at least one of the contributors had a riff about those "barbaric rib eating practices."  As for the Lundgren impression I've been practicing by watching Rocky IV, talking with marbles in my mouth and being repeatedly knocked in the head by a large oversized mallet.  I should be more than ready by the time we record, or I'll suffer a concussion, choke on a marble and fall into a coma where my dreams are haunted by the desire to avenge Carl Weathers.

Looks like the curse has come to fruition.  Somebody's beat you too it. (http://www.rifftrax.com/iriffs/masters-universe-corvis-and-j-freek)  All though I think I'll continue wait for yours.

For a second I thought you meant someone just did Last Unicorn, which I'd be a bit more worried about, having two of those come out close together might have burned people out on the movie.  A secondary MOTU riff, without a sample so far, probably a month or more before mine in completed doesn't worry me as much.  If it's warranted I'll pick it up after the script editing is done to make sure there's no repeat jokes in ours, but I'm pretty sure with the script we have already we're not going to fall behind someone else's take.

Please note that the cockiness of that last paragraph is based entirely on the script that I haven't even added to yet.  That's gotta count for something.

Hey if cockiness counted we'd already own this site.  Mwahahaha.

Got the cover for "The Last Unicorn" done except for your official write up.

No real hi-res art for this, but there are a TON of fans of this movie who came up with their own art work, so that came in handy!

Yeah, I researched a bit for this movie and saw the same thing.  A lot of people are downright passionate about this movie.  I should have the write up done today, I'm planning on getting the "Coming Soon" page up before work.

Some of the customer reviews on Netflix are pretty feverish...... you should be ASHAMED of yourself for riffing it!

Amazon has it on sale for $6.99.

I'd still buy it at Conlan Press (http://www.conlanpress.com), personally, just to make sure the author gets the money he deserves.  I might be riffing his movie, but the man went on to write the Star Trek TNG episode "Sarek" so I gotta throw some support his way.

And here we are:

Sometimes you find yourself looking back on your childhood and asking yourself, "Did that ever really make sense to me? What was in my water?"

The Last Unicorn.  A gripping and sad tale of the ravages of extinction and...what?  Oh, apparently it's a whimsical romp of animation from people mainly known for Christmas specials coupled with several long musical numbers by those guys that sang Sister Golden Hair.

Featuring the vocal talent of Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee, Alan Arkin and the song stylings of Jeffrey Lebowski, The Last Unicorn is a magical journey of discovery where adults can look back and realize just how screwed up their beloved childhood classics really were.

Joined by his good friend Nykk, Ronin Fox takes the journey alongside the ancient mythological archetypes of the talking horse, the Jewish magician, and the old cookwench to do battle with the Red Bull*.  Will the unicorn find the rest of her kind and prove the title to be a lie?  Will bold Captain Cully and his band continue their thievery or open a new chain of taco restaurants?  Will Schmendrick change his name to something more dignified, like Klutzo?  And of course, what could be so wrong with this movie that it would drive riffers out of the studio?  These questions, but less, will be answered!

*Battle is here defined by standing around and/or running away.

Edit:  Now without typos.  Enjoy!

Okay, so I'm back after my vacation, I've settled in and relaxed, now it's back to work on riffing.  I just spent a little time on my chapter of Lost City, picking between a few alternate jokes between my script and the one Anais sent me.  Also I've been watching the new developments on the iRiffs main page with a bit of a smile.

One problem though.  I need a couple more ratings for Last Unicorn and Pearl of the Orient!  If you bought either of those riffs and haven't clicked a rating for it yet please do, I'm at 9 for both of them right now, and one more each should be able to put them on the new Top 50 list on the right hand side of the main page.   :) /ratings whore section

Recording on Masters of the Universe is tentatively scheduled for this weekend, I'll try my best to get it done and up before the current iRiff contest deadline and another riff should be popping up shortly before that.

I do have your iRiff, but I haven't received the DVD yet.  I ordered it from that web site you had mentioned (Conlan Press).  They did send an email last week saying that they had mailed it, and being sorry for the delay.  It sounded like it was a general-supply problem, and not something specific to my order.  So it might be that several other people ordered from them, and also saw a delay in getting their DVD's.

disclaimer: it may even be that my copy of the DVD has arrived this week, I've been a little swamped with other things...

Wonder if that is a issue with several people, I've never actually ordered from that site, I found out about it after I'd already bought the dvd elsewhere and just have been pimping it on principle.

The weekend is almost over... Hopefully you were able to put some time in on MOTU, also I'm curious as to what the other iriff that should be popping up shortly before that will be.

Unfortunately frustrations are continuing here, as I was unable to even reach my co-riffers for MOTU, let alone work with them.  Luckily the other iRiff did get some work, as it is a solo riff.  It might be a stretch to get it out in time for the contest, but I'll be working through the week on it.

Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and 2 have been added to iRiffs (For those of you who already downloaded the free tracks, these are the same ones, no need to pay if you already got it.)
