Title: Top Ten Movies of 2006
Post by: Minnesota on November 10, 2006, 07:53:00 PM
Everybody give your top ten of 06.

"My" Top Ten of 2006

1.Running Scared
2.Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
3.Night Watch
4.Beerfest
5.Over the Hedge
6.Glory Road
7.Final Destination 3
8.Grandma's Boy
9.Scary Movie 4
10.The Benchwarmers

Not the greatest year for movies so far, but I usually wait for Dvd, so there's plenty more to come (hopefully)

Benchwarmers and Grandma's boy on your top ten?

I refuse to speak to you anymore.   ;D

Hmm.  My top ten would probably be something like (and in no particular order):

1. Marie Antoinette
2. Monster House
3. Brick
4. Grizzly Man
5. Inside Man
6. Superman Returns

...

And I'd have to stop there.  There's bunch of films not out yet (or that I haven't seen) over here that I'd really like to check out before completely committing myself: Hollywoodland, The Prestige, Borat, Casino Royale...

Let me preface this list by noting that I've only SEEN 10 movies made this year. (I checked!) But I enjoyed them all!

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (It won the Box office this year for a reason.)
2) X3 - Had some great lines and awesome action and that's all I ask of my X-Men movies. :^)
3) Superman Returns - I was expecting a departure from the original Superman movies and was pleasantly surprised.
4) V for Vendetta - It was a good adaptation of a good comic book and it was very thought-provoking.
5) Ultimate Avengers - Too much fun to be legal. :^)
6) Cars - Pixar should be the only company that gets to do CGI.
7) Flushed away - OK. Pixar and Aardman. :^)
8 ) Snakes on a Plane - The movie delivered everything the title promised. No Riffaholic should live their life without seeing it at least once. :^)
9) Ultimate Avengers II - Still cool, but not as cool as the first.
10) Silent Hill - Nicely creepy.

I don't think I've actually seen 10 new movies this year. And if I did, I'm sure I can't think of 10 good ones.

Dude, I love the Avengers and the Ultimates, but the Ultimate Avengers movies suck hard. Bad dialogue, weak voice acting, stiff animation.

You don't have to look hard for good movies:

1. Brick - the only movie I can recommend to friends.  If you haven't seen this, rent this right now.
2. The Decent - I am not a fan of horror movies, but this scared the crap out of me.
3. The Departed
4. Monster House
5. Little Miss Sunshine
6. Harsh Times - I can't help thinking that Christian Bale will be the best actor of our generation
7. Superman Returns
8. Clerks II
9. V for Vendetta
10. Borat

Honorable mentions go to Over the Hedge, Talledega Nights, and The Prestige.  There is a lot I haven't seen, and I expect to put Casino Royale, Tenacious D, The Fountain, and Pan's Labyrinth somewhere on this list.  And I really can't rate crap because I usually do not make this mistake until I see it on Netflix, but The Da Vinci Code was pretty bad.

The best films I have seen this year:

1) Little Miss Sunshine
2) Borat
3) Monster House (3D version)
4) Over The Hedge
5) Inside Man
6) Snakes On A Plane
7) Clerks 2
8 ) Mission Impossible III
9) Scary Movie 4
10) Crank

Films that I haven't seen that might crack my top 10:
The Da Vinci Code
Pirates 2
Cars
The Departed
The Prestige
The Illusionist
World Trade Center
United 93
Talladega Nights
Flags Of Our Fathers
Casino Royale
Flushed Away
Dreamgirls

Worst movies I've seen all year:
Annapolis
Date Movie (may be the worst film ever made, easily the worst of it's genre)
When A Stranger Calls
Superman Returns (not that bad, just a big disappointment)
My Super Ex-Girlfriend (huge waste of time)

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought Dead Man's Chest sucked hard. Everything that was new and exciting about the Curse Of The Black Pearl getting rehashed does not a sequel make.

The Departed (everything about this movie was great)
Borat (incredibly funny and uncomfortable)
Brick (brilliant concept)
Pirates 2 (alot of fun to watch)
Clerks 2 (love Kevin Smith's work)
X-Men 3 (not as good as the second one but better than the first)
The DaVinci Code (i like the book and the movie was a good adaptation)
Miami Vice (i thought it was cool and well done)
Superman Returns (could've been alot worse. i enjoyed it)
Scary Movie 4 (i'm a sucker for parodies)

I haven't been to very many, but I loved these:

1. The Departed
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. V for Vendetta
4. Monster House
5. Thank You for Smoking

And these were very good:

6. An Inconvenient Truth
7. The Illusionist

Quite frankly I haven't seen 10 good movies yet but here's where I'm at so far:

1. United 93-(Incredible, brutally honest, agenda-less filmmaking. One of the most visceral and uncomfortable yet powerful experiences I've ever had in a theater).

2. Superman Returns-(I know some people thought it dull, I found elegant and epic)

3. Cars-(Pixar can do no wrong)

4. Stranger than Fiction- (Good and original but could have been cast better. Queen Latifah and Maggie Gyllennaahaaalahallenal didn't work for me).

5. Nacho Libre-(Kind of a guilty pleasure here I know. What can I say, I like Jables.)

Severely disappointed by:

1. Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest- (I loved the first one but this was everything that I feared "Curse of the Black Pearl" would be. They succeeded at making a Pirate movie boring, not since "Cuttthroat Island" has that happened. What a mess.)

2. V for Vendetta-(Portman was good but this movie offended me on so many levels I don't know where to begin. Amoral garbage.)

Hopeful for:

1. For Your Consideration

2. Apocolypto

3. Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny

Here's the movies I liked a lot this year, that I've seen:

1. The Departed
2. Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
3. The Descent
4. Cars
5. Thank You For Smoking
6. Monster House
7. Borat
8. The Hills Have Eyes

Uh...I haven't seen too many other movies this year.  I liked Mission Impossible 3 and Over The Hedge, was fairly ambivalent about X-Men 3, didn't care for Superman Returns, and found The Proposition intriguing, but I can't say I LIKED it.  V for Vendetta was pretty good.  That's about it.

Wow, I don't think I've actually _seen_ ten new films this year.

Silent Hill
Slither
Dead Man's Chest
A Scanner Darkly
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Clerks II

'The Descent' would get a vote but it got it's U.K. release last year I think.

10)Running Scared
9)Tom Yum Goong (Or "The Protector" For the US people)
8)World Trade Center
7)V for Vendetta
6)United 93
5)Tenacious D In The Pick of Destiny
4)Clerks 2
3)Snakes On a Plane
2)Jackass Number 2
1)Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorius Nation of Kazakhstan

Let's see:
The Departed
Science of Sleep
Neil Young: Heart of Gold
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Borat

That's all I've got- I mean, I liked V for Vengeance, but it was too flawed to feel like a top ten kind of movie. I'm pretty sure all of these would be top ten no matter how many of the extant movies I caught.

I'm hoping the lack of Thank You For Smoking on most of these lists is because you didn't see it. Excellent film.

I take my top ten of the year pretty seriously, and 4 or 5 of them usually come out on November & December, so I'll be posting my top ten after that.  A rough sneak peek at mine will probably contain:

Mission: Impossible 3
Casino Royale
The Departed
Lady in the Water

I don't normally see alot of movies, so I only have a top 5.

1. Pirates 2 ( fun, and overall good movie. The Kraken rocks BTW ;D )
2. Cars ( probably my favourite Pixar movie next to the Incredibles )
3. X3 ( somewhat underrated movie. It had great action, and I overall enjoyed it )
4. Snakes on a Plane ( nuff' said )
5. World Trade Center ( nothing to write home about, but a good movie overall )

My pick for the worst movie of the year goes to V for Vendetta. I honestly don't know why so many people liked this film. It was boring, not fun to watch, not enough action to make the $$ for viewing it in Imax worth it, and the lesbian scene just made things worse. Very overrated.

Havent seen much but

V for Vendetta ( not as good as the book, But still one hell of a movie)
X-men 3 ( Sure it wasnt the greatest of the x-men movies. But it was an enjoyable movie.)
POTC: Dead man's Chest ( Just a fun movie)

Movies i hated.

Superman Returns (boring, dull, & Drawn out. Not to mention alot of its plot comes from the 1978 classic. Give me Christopher Reeve or even george reeve. Sure Routh was pretty good Superman. Well if Superman was a wimpy mime who spyed & cryed over his ex. What a Sappy Requel. O.k. Ill stop ranting. But really the movie wasnt that good. Especially compare to Superman the movie.).

Just so you know
Sequel + Remake = Requel
You have the most eccentric capitalization I've ever seen. Not the worst, by any means, but strange, as though you'd gotten used to typing on a telegraph or something. Anyway...

I just saw Reservoir Dogs in a theater. Does that mean I can add it to my list?

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

The only film I saw this year that met and exceeded my expectations.

Honorable mentions:
Clerks II (unnecessary, but fun)
Little Miss Sunshine (too much hype)
Borat (way too much hype)
Slither (for making b-movies fun again)
The Departed (for being the only Scorcese film I've enjoyed since Taxi Driver)
Night of the Living Dead (the original; surprised the Hell out of me by being so good)

Not too much that screamed at me this year to see. I mostly enjoyed the classics at home.

1. Casino Royale
2. Superman Returns
3. Monster House
4. Slither
5. Clerks 2

I'm looking forward to United 93 & Apocalypto though.
