Title: Chuck
Post by: Fortis on January 25, 2008, 10:44:23 AM
Did anybody watch those brand new chuck episodes last night?

Was it just me, or were those the best episodes of the best written new series this season? I keep saying, there is no way this show can get better, and they just keep proving me wrong.

Yeah, I love Chuck.  I think it's probably the best show of the new season, though I sure that chair thing's been done before in a whole bunch of HK action movies.  I'd prefer it if they brought back Harry Tang though, he was awesome.

ah harry tang, good stuff. Yeah, the chair has been done, but this was better than most stuff I have seen. It was on Indiana Jones and Sean Connery in a chair level of cool.

I guess I like this show because it's plausible, and not silly like most shows.

This is one of my favorite shows on TV. Zachary Levi is perfect in the role of Chuck. I was watching him promote the show when it was returning this season and he was on Conan and Leno and he seemed exactly like Chuck. During his interview with Conan he pulled out his iPhone and showed off his Lightsaber Ap :D. Last week's episode was fantastic. Morgan and Chuck are one of a great comedic duo.

Some of my favorite quotes:

Von Hayes: "Who is this?"
Chuck: "Jor...Jorge Carmichael."

Chuck: "She said roast beef."
Morgan: "Roast beef? Are you kidding me. That's the worst kind of sandwich."

Yeah, I love the show.  I was a little disappointed in the Jill storyline reveal, as I feel it's a little obvious, but it's held together with really great performances and some genuinely funny moments.

Chuck has been awesome recently.  While I thought the Jill storyline was a little too neat, everything else has been gold.  Major props for this week's Christmas episode, which had hilarious jokes - Al from Die Hard! - and brought us a new element to the Chuck/Sarah relationship.  The cast are great too.

Anyone watch last night's 3-D episode? The episode was fun. The 3-D was interesting, but I still think they have a lot to work on when it comes to 3-D on TV, which will be getting better in the next couple of years. Cool concept though.

No, I thought it was going to be the new ColorCast (I think it's called) Yellow-green, the same technology used for the Super Bowl commercials?

Little known fact, Legend Films did the intro for the Chuck episode. (Converted the 2D intro into 3D)

Well, you'd wish this, but I think this couldn't be further from the truth. The fact is, it sucked a little bit less than anaglyph for some reasons, and way more than anaglyph for other reasons.

The spiel on colorcode3d.com is a bunch of hooey. Honestly, it's a bunch of blatant lies. There's no technology at work here. I know because I downloaded their "make 3d" program demo. All it does it make a yellow image and a blue image and put them together. I've done it myself without their program. It's exactly the same as regular anaglyph except that it works with RGB yellow and RGB blue instead of the off-red and cyan of classic glasses.

In other words, they've advanced this technology almost not at all in however many decades. If they're going for combinations of pure RGB, the only thing left to try is green and magenta. If not, there's a billion color combinations they could do, but I don't think any of them would work very well. You're still looking through two different colored lenses, messing with your brain.

Polarized is of course flawless. I don't understand it at all, but apparently they can't put it on TV.

Chuck in 3-D really sucked. I'm looking forward to this being on the top 10 list of biggest tech failures at the end of the year.

3-D anaglyph comic books work pretty well, I must say.
Title: Re: Chuck
Post by: torgosPizza on February 03, 2009, 09:23:29 PM
Just FYI, the anaglyph / colorcode or whatever isn't the only 3D technology out there. The system of shutter lenses that DLP TVs are capable of projecting to is the best experience, really, but is not yet ubiquitous or very easily assimilated by the public yet. The technology is still a ways out there, but it's definitely come a long way recently.

Polarized 3D glasses create the illusion of three-dimensional images by restricting the light that reaches each eye, an example of stereoscopy. To present a stereoscopic motion picture, two images are projected superimposed onto the same screen through orthogonal polarizing filters. The viewer wears low-cost eyeglasses which also contain a pair of orthogonal polarizing filters. As each filter passes only that light which is similarly polarized and blocks the orthogonally polarized light, each eye sees only its separately polarized image, producing a three-dimensional effect.

Quote
LCD shutter glasses are glasses used in conjunction with a display screen to create the illusion of a three dimensional image, an example of stereoscopy. Glass containing liquid crystal and a polarizing filter has the property that it becomes dark when voltage is applied, but otherwise is transparent. The glasses are controlled by IR emitter that sends IR signal. The Glasses alternately darkens over one eye, and then the other, in synchronization with the refresh rate of the screen, while the display alternately displays different perspectives for each eye. This is called Alternate-frame sequencing.

The shutter glasses sound cool. There are a few kits out there that you can buy for this kind of 3D at home.
Title: Re: Chuck
Post by: torgosPizza on February 04, 2009, 11:18:19 AM
That's what we have in the office, the shutter glasses. There is a little box you can buy for the DLP TVs that are 3D-capable. The DLP syncs with the box which sends an infrared signal to sync with the glasses, creating the illusion of 3D. The best part is, the glasses are clearer than the polarized lenses, and the shutter speed is so fast you don't notice any flicker. It's pretty amazing.
Title: Re: Chuck
Post by: bratpop on February 05, 2009, 02:20:36 AM
What exactly are you watching with it? Wouldn't there have to be 3-D shutter glasses movies?

And I know anaglyph isn't the only thing, but colorcode was supposed to be a better version than that, touted as something completely different and so advanced that it could only have come from aliens. It was neither.

The shutter thing sounds too expensive and complicated to be successful.

I was just thinking of how Dominic M. played a rockstar in this episode and one on Lost and that they could have made some jokes out of it.

I'd love to have seen the following between Jeff and Lester talking about Dominic's character:

Jeff:
I heard he was in a plane crash on some island. He was stuck there for several months and were attacked by natives. Turns out the island was home for secret operation doing all sorts of weird experiments...
Lester: Jeff that's is rediculous. Makes about much sense as people walking around with super powers or people who can talk to the dead.
(In the back ground you see Sylar and Matt Parkman walking around looking at videos and then woman from Medium walks past as well)

I was really glad they got the Chuck-being-afraid-of-Sarah thing out of the way quickly.  I loved the way the Christmas one ended, but was concerned that they'd really draw out Sarah not knowing Chuck had seen her shoot the guy (Rooker!).  I hate when shows do that kind of thing.

The NBC insider says that Chuck will get a third season of 13 episodes. But an other insider at WB is telling its not 100% sure, but its looking very good for the show. The WB insider confirms that if the show is getting renewed (what seems likely to happen) that the third season gets 13 episodes.

Schedule problem

The WB insider tells series.nu that NBC had a problem to get Chuck on the schedule, but because NBC really loves the show, they did everything to make it happen.

CW had no interest?

Last week we had an exclusive article about Chuck, that the show could move to The CW. Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment of The CW likes Chuck and had interest in the show if NBC would cancel it, but NBC has never offered the series to The CW.

Here's something you don't see every day. Zachary Levi, the star of the TV series Chuck, making sandwhiches?

He has been in the UK for the past couple of days, having attended the Starfury T1 convention.

With the final episode of season two now broadcast, the fear is that NBC won't be renewing the show for a third season.

So, a campaign was launched that involved going to Subway and buying a sandwich. Levi, being in Birmingham, UK at the time, promptly invited everyone to follow him to the local brand, and preceded to take over the store. For it was he who stepped behind the counter and started making the sandwiches.

NBC has finalized a deal to bring Chuck back for a third season, multiple sources confirm.

Here's the bad news: The 13-episode pickup came after Warner Bros. agreed to make significant budget concessions, including scaling back the number of episodes several members of the show's stellar supporting cast will appear in and, per one insider, possibly eliminating one actor altogether (R.I.P. Anna Wu?). The show is also expected to cut two of its staff writers.

A little update on Chuck.  Apparently NBC's new shows are doing so poorly that Chuck could be moved up in the schedule, even as early as this month. There are rumours that the execs love the 4 episodes that have been completed already, and it leaves the series open to being a full 22 episodes this year, rather than the truncated 13.

Hooray for NBC's lousy choice in new programming!

(Seriously fellas? You put on 2 new cop shows and 2 new hospital shows, fill the schedule with Jay Leno every night and wonder why your ratings are down?)

Hey, Chuck Bartowski, Dr. Gregory House has a prescription for you: 50ccs of EAT IT!!!

According to a report in Broadcasting & Cable, Fox has decided to air the next new episode of House on January 11, which happens to coincide with the regular time-slot premiere of NBC's Chuck.

For Chuck fans who want to see the show earn good ratings and allow them to stop eating $5 chicken teriyaki subs, this is certainly not what the doctor ordered. (Ha! See what I did there?)

House was due to return on January 25, giving Chuck a head start to gain momentum in its Monday time slot. But once NBC announced its mid-season schedule, Fox took a look and said, "Nuh-uh."

Fox's shrewd move isn't all bad for Chuck, as the show's two-hour season premiere will still air on Sunday, January 10. But if I was a hardcore Chuck fan, I'd be really upset about this. Moving House is one of those deliciously evil moves made by one network in an attempt to destroy another. It's the kind of move that a sadist like myself can appreciate, even though I think Chuck is a pretty good show.

And as I'm writing this, another bit of news comes across the wire: Fox is also reportedly moving a new episode of Fringe so that it follows House on January 11... which means Fringe will go up against Heroes in its new time slot. NETWORK FIGHT!!!

Somewhere, a Fox suit is giggling. Talk about kicking something when it's down.

Tonight! ;D

My DVR decided to delete my series recording! Luckily I thought to check so I could set it again.  (It freaked out a few weeks ago and I lost half the series recordings I had set.)

Chuck was great last night. The Vault scene was great. Loved Casey. He brings a smile to my face every time..

So what do people think about the first 3 episodes?

Overall, I liked them, but there's a few things that annoyed me:

Devon is not dead. He's been kidnapped. If you saw the preview for next week Devon is forced to work with Chuck. Devon looks to have a bluetooth earpiece bomb to keep him compliant.

I love the show. But yeah i thought they killed him too till I saw the preview. I breathed a massive sigh of relief when i did. Devon is.. well Awesome.

Ah. Good thing, then.  I wonder if Ellie will find out about Chuck now.

I don't think that's true at all.  There's really only so much dithering you can do with this relationship before people are actively turned against it and resetting the status quo after all they've been through seems a little cowardly.  The main thing about Chuck/Sarah is if they could do it well, then it wouldn't matter.  The show doesn't need to centre around that relationship to be successful, and I'd argue that some of its best episodes never brought that to the forefront.

Well, that's a mighty big if... The chase is almost universally more appealing than what happens after the catch.

I think it's a no-win. This series survived based on hardcore fans going apeshit and gorging themselves on $5 footlongs. The writers realize they probably have enough goodwill built up with the hardcores to maybe string them along a little bit longer...  Seeing that any gamble that results in a misstep and it's a guarenteed game over... there is no wiggle room.

They stay the course that got them here, hope that the mid season marketing push gets them enough new viewers, you know the ones who won't be approaching burnout on the whole "will they/won't they" thing that the current fans enjoyed so much that they are begging for them to end up together... and then ... maybe they stay afloat long enough to move the characters forward.

Considering the numbers they've put up for a network like NBC, unless something drastic happens, I don't think Chuck will be in trouble this year.

I suppose you're right... with the overall debacle that is NBC... I wouldn't be shocked to see them give two hours a week to a revived MST3K at this point. The demise of  just about everything new they trotted out in the fall, including Leno... and the continuing slow death of Heroes has only helped Chuck's cause... the bar can't be that high.

agreed. I used to watch Chuck, Heroes, and My Name is Earl. Now I watch Chuck and Community. As long as those two are on, I'm fine.

That was a really fantastic episode this week. Best in a while. And man, Kristin Kreuk is stunning. It's going to be nice seeing her on the show now. I actually felt bad when Shaw called Chuck and told him that he had to stay on the plane, instead of going to the Eiffel Tower with her, but was happy when she walked into the Buy More. I like the relationship that they already established between her and Chuck in this one episode, so it should be interesting to see how they develop it even more in the coming weeks.

Excellent season. I'm glad it got picked up for a fourth as well, and hopefully NBC will extend that season to 22 rather than 13 episodes. The final six or so episodes were really enjoyable. This last season's character development was fantastic. They are really making Casey a great character and the relationship that he and Morgan were/are developing in the field and at the Buy More was great. Same goes for Devon and Ellie. It'll be interesting to see if anything happens between Alex and Morgan also. I've said it before but I just love this show.

It's baaaaaack. Awesome ep so far. Guest starring Dolph Lundren and Harry Dean Stanton.

Dolph said the line "I must break you." to John Casey.

Also Chuck was job searching and interviewed with Vandalay industries, That's George Costanza's old fake name from Seinfeld.

Anyone watch the series finale? Perfect way to end it. That Jeffster performance was all I needed and the smile on my face during it was huge. Loved the open ending as well.

I have it on the DVR, but I haven't started this season yet.

I've got about 3-4 more eps left. Finished the one with Jeff and Lester's "investigation" . Loved the Aspen Buy More's staff being like a Bizzaro version of the Burbank one.
