Title: I love the '80's!
Post by: Pak-Man on November 07, 2006, 04:47:52 PM
At last a category for more vaguely defined discussions to be discussed at length! :^)

We've seen some of the most (in)famous '80s movies skewered: Cocktail, Top Gun, Roadhouse... What other big ol' blocks of '80s cheese deserve to be riffed up?

Dirty Dancing, mayhaps?
Flashdance?
FAME???
All those '80s movies that DIDN'T revolve around dancing?

Discuss! :^)

There were '80s movie that didn't revolve around dancing? Are you sure?

Well there are at least some that revolve around bars, and others that revolve around climbing the corporate ladder...
Yeah mostly dancing though.

Cocktail was all three. :^)

There were Muppet movies, which didn't feature dancing only because Muppets don't have working legs. But they would've danced if they could.

Could we take anymore of Patrick Swayze topless?

Kevin Bacon in 'Footloose' would be good though

I can see Mike doing "Dirty Dancing" in the wake of "Crossroads".  I know my wife would enjoy it.

Some suggestions:

The Blue Lagoon - Mike has mentioned this one several times in various riffs

Karate Kid - c'mon. It's begging for it!

Mannequin - It's got Andrew McCarthy.

Short Circuit - Mr. Johnny Five needs a good riffing

Space Mutiny - Oh wait, it's been done  ;)

Twins - Ahnold saying "Cookies! I'm really looking forward to tossing them."  ;D

Xanadu - I've heard very bad things about this one....

I second Xanadu, and will add Next Of Kin to the list.

Gremlins might be fun.

Gremlins would be alright, but its just so aware of its own cheesiness.  That's what made it an enjoyable movie.  Come on, gremlins singing along to Hi-Ho.

The best of rifftrax decades.  The 1980's produced some of the most unbearable movies ever made (often with andrew mccarthy).  We have ledendary flops (Ishtar, Howard the Duck), teen movies (the molly ringwald oevure), and things that boggle the mind (Revolution, the film that nearly ruined Al Pacino's career, and King Kong Lives, the movie Linda Hamilton chose to follow up The Terminator).  Too bad it ended so soon.

They Live (pure silliness)
C.H.U.D.
Dirty Dancing
Once Bitten
Manniquen
Bright Lights, Big City
Teen Wolf
Maximum Overdrive
Aliens (Fun?  yes.  brainless?  very much so)
Cobra
Flashdance
Scarface
Ladyhawke
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Real Genius
Transformers The Movie
Fright Night

I need to sit down...

Karate Kid - c'mon. It's begging for it!

I'd go for Karate Kid III.  It's hilarious.

Danny goes bad for awhile.  There's a turning point where he runs into a "street tough" in a bar and breaks his nose, making Danny realize he's gotten too dark under the tutelage of the wonderful, scenery chewing Thomas Ian Griffith.  (The street tough is played by the kid in Real Genius, which should giv eyou an idea of just how realistic the entire enterprise is.)

Also Ralph Macchio continues to look 17, except when he turns his back on the camera and displays what is clearly a bigger, 38-year-old butt in acid washed jeans.   Yes I looked at Macchio's butt, and I am sorry.

Not only that, both films feature Martin Kove.  That makes them both awesomely riff-worthy.

Martin would go on to star in Crocodile II: Death Swamp.  I think I would like to find this movie.

Speaking of Crocodiles, How about Crocodile Dundee? That was '80s right? :^)

And has the name Yahoo Serious been brought up on these forums yet?

Considering Mikes head is stuck on Mick Dundees body on the Add To Cart page, that would be quite fitting

Excalibur.  That was an 80's movie.  And it has Patrick Stewart, Ciarin Hinds, Liam Neeson, and Gabriel Byrne in it!

I've actually seen this film.  It's not as bad as you'd hope it be, though.

Damn.  I was hoping for Anaconda-like levels of cheesiness.

You love the '80's?  What a coincidence - I hate everything about them!  Including myself (born in 1988)!

What? No one is mentioning the teen-angst-I'm-cool-because-I-work-in-a-record-store movies of the 80's? For shame.

  And Robocop! C'mon......

Unless it was mentioned on another board, in which case ignore this post.

You're right! Robocop has been largely undiscussed. What isn't riffable about a part-man part-robot all-cop!? :^)

ET and Robocop both have my vote  8)

Actually, pretty much anything by Spielberg in the 80s ought to do it.

Thankfully no!

We must all adhere to the 1989 International Accord of Lisbon that bans any and all mentions of a certain Mr. Serious (He whose name must not be uttered)
Lest you be tried for crimes against humanity.

How about riffing 80s films starring the artist formerly known as Prince?

Purple Rain
Under the Cherry Moon
