Title: The Good and the Beautiful
Post by: RoninFox on January 03, 2008, 02:10:04 PM
You know captain...Every year I become more and more convinced...that the wisest and best...is to focus our attention on the good, and the beautiful...if you just take the time to look at it...

So I was thinking, we all saw what Tom Servo and Mike worked out as good combinations of the Good and Beautiful.  What about us though.  Give some good examples.  Mine?  Well...

Yes...I don't know how many other guys out there agree with me (probably none) but I would rather have a woman dressed like that...than in what women wear today.

Is it so wrong that I like women in really impractical dresses?

But again that really not a good description of court except in story books or the single example of the court of Louis XIV. And his court pretty much seeded the ground for the French Revolution.

One of the great things about the modern world is that stylishness has in fact become more universal; While almost nobody will wear ball gowns except on very rare occasions, almost everyone can look nice and distinctive if they want to, rather than having to make do with immensely dowdy and simple garments. :)

Yeah...okay since I can't win. I decided in Fortis' picture perfect world, women can wear huge impractical dresses that weigh as much as them, and we can all just stand there and...I don't know...now it sounds boring.

Okay, people should just wear dresses like that, and I will be happy. Do you agree? You don't have to if you don't want to of course, I just think it'd be fun.

If it makes you feel better I'll dress like this...

Practical and boring aren't always the same

Yes...they are all of the above...extremely good, very greasy, and also very addictive. So if you get addicted to them...they will be deadly. They are animal fries, and you should get them if you ever go to in-n-out burger. It consists of their fries, grilled onions, cheese, and thousand island dressing. Put a little salt on it, and you have something that is oh so good...and yet you can feel your arteries clogging as you eat them.

Top hat and everything! Deal?

Only if you wear a whale bone corset with it too.  Have your inner organs all mashed and pushed around out of position plus restrict your breathing so that  any sort of strain could cause you to become light-headed (hense "the fainting couch") and then you'd also fart a lot ("the vapors") because it was always getting squeezed out of you....

And then there's the multiple undergarments you were required to wear under it all - pantaloons and all.   All those layers of fabric on a hot day?  Air condition the entire planet and I'll do it.
Title: Re: The Good and the Beautiful

Actually men did wear corsets at the time, not all of them but corsets weren't just for the ladies back in the day ;)
Title: Re: The Good and the Beautiful
Post by: Tripe on August 14, 2008, 08:57:37 AM
Nope nothing to do with sexuality; Corsets have always existed in order to give shape where it wasn't naturally there, we sitill ham similar garments they're just more advanced and therefore less restricting.

But actually during the regency period there really wasn't that much use of corsetry since the Empire Silhouette lends itself to a freer form of undergarment. :)

What this bit of the thread reminds me of:
Bill McNeal: "How come no one thinks I'm funny?"
Lisa Miller: "How come no one thinks I'm female?"

Although, since in the show the two examples they use are Anna Nicole Smith and Tawny Kitaen...both of whom have um...."issues".......should we only be looking for the same in that case?

I don't think it's photoshopped.  The window is looking downward onto her breasts, so they don't appear as large.
Title: Re: The Good and the Beautiful
Post by: whthat on December 11, 2008, 12:30:46 PM
The dress's top edge has a completely different angle in the reflection then the image.  So unless it the dress spikes up two inches in the arm pit it's photoshopped.

Her features are quite pronounced so she isn't delicately pretty but (prior to the photoshopping) she's quite nice looking really.  :)

Yeah, I was, but I realized later it was kinda misplaced. You and JC do have a higher proportion of ironic to straight posts than I generally like (I find irony to be somewhat destructive to actual communication), but I was just in a bad mood.

I just assume your natural state is "bad mood".

Our mashed potato was doled out by ice-cream scoops.  Best I ever had.

Ours was too. Wasn't the best ever, but it was good. I do miss "Turkey ala king," which was a common (1x/week) meal.  Interestingly, having NO idea what "Turkish delight" was when I first read The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, I envisioned it as cafeteria turkey ala king.  This in no way detracted, in my mind, from Edmund's delight with it.

Turkish delight, in my mind, I had thought would taste like taffy. When I finally got to try the real thing I don't think I was ever more surprised than right then.

See my experiences with Turkish delight started with the chocolate covered stuff Frys made, and my favourite version it the real stuff covered in chocolate that I used to get from Thornton's.

Oh and my school dinners made this spaghetti ring bolognese that I have never been able to replicate but which I loved and was happy every time I saw it on the menu.
Title: Re: The Good and the Beautiful

I think the Turkish Delight from Fry's was better than the actual Turkish Turkish Delight I ate.

My high school used to sell this pizza hot pocket, but it was possibly the greatest hot pocket ever made. It was like if your grandma made them at home, it was so tasty!

I've never been able to find out where they got them from and once I actually considered calling the school and asking where they bought them. God, just thinking about it now is making me salivate!

The fruit cup comes in a plastic tray-condom? Weird.

I loved rectangle pizza! And I loved that since they had to have the FDA approved balance of fruits and veggies with every meal. Where else could you order pizza with a side of corn?

School lunch pepperoni was ridiculously good.  It was like little chunks and it was brilliant.  The best was always chicken nuggets and mashed potatoes.  We would dunk them in the mashed potatoes, then in the barbeque sauce.  I'm drooling now.

Sweet and salty I have no problem with.  Ever have popcorn with chocolate drizzled on it?

It's the high dairy content of a milk shake/frosty in direct contact with fried potatoes.  Not much on the idea of sour cream on french fries either - even though you put sour cream on a baked potato.

Heh!  When looking for a picture for Mira, it did occur to me that I haven't seen her in a movie for quite awhile now!

But checking in at IMDB, it looks like she's pretty busy this year.  And apparently she was on an episode of "House" this season, but it'll probably be awhile before I catch that episode (I tend to see "House" in re-runs).

I can see it- kind of a "Anne Hathaway-girl next door" type.

How does that mean douchebag?  I have a very specific definition of douche and "nerdy" falls nowhere in that description.

I was referring specifically to Samberg, who I think falls into the category of "colossal douchebag".

Douchebag or not, I think hes funny (at least in Hot Rod) havent seen SNL in ages.

I actually don't mind Shia that much.  He's been in some bad movies, I guess, but he doesn't exude that oily smugness that I sense from Samberg.  Those "hilarious" videos he does only reinforce what a cockgobbler he is.  But I am fond of Will Ferrell, and I know a lot of people hate him, so, de gustibus I guess.

See, I don't think Shia seems that douchey either, but most people seem to think so.  Love is love, what can I say?

I just remember the 90s version on some public access channel. Some pale guy in a robe and a woman...

It might as well be discussed in here, but after having seen Shorts this evening, I'm ready to make a choice on the "is Kat Dennings attractive or not" topic that was talked about a little while back.  I'm in the "yes" category.  :)  It's not that she's particularly beautiful, but there's an odd appeal to her that I find quite attractive.  Kinda like Kristen Stewart in that way.  They'd be the sorts of girls I'd go for in real life.

Congratulations on finding an unflattering picture of her.

Sometimes she doesn't photograph very well.  She's much prettier in action.

A London Film Festival Good and Beautiful!

The Good:

Lebanon: An Israeli war film set entirely within the confines of a tank, and set over the course of the day in the first Lebanese war in the early 80s.  Powerful stuff, emphasized by the fact that it's based on the director's life in the army.  He spoke after the film, and he still feels haunted by it.

The Beautiful:

Apart from the thousands of gorgeous women roaming around London, there was one movie star that I had the opportunity to see in the flesh, Romola Garai.  She's a quite beautiful mix of Drew Barrymore and Cate Blanchett, and as good an actor as either of them:

I dont even know the chick in this picture, and I already dont like her.  She looks like the type that would go into a resturant and order the most ridiculously difficult to cook thing in the world, sit there and roll her eyes because its taking too long, and then send it back because it wasnt done right.  Then, when the manager comes over and tries to make things right by offering her free desert, she gets up and walks out.

She also hates men and has entirely too many pets in her apartment.

I got that "angry lesbian" vibe too. Just to piss her off, tell her "How are you a vegan when there is likely a little bit of cat hair in everything you eat in your apartment?"

If I worked with this chick, I would order a cheesteak with a side of chicken wings for lunch every day just to piss her off.  And when she gave me her little speech about how the cows and chickens are kept in horrible conditions and abused on these farms, I would be like, "Yeah?  That makes them taste better though."

While I accept that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this sort of thing is subjective, I just have to say: WRONG! Yeesh, I was just thinking how annoying this woman was this morning when a Progressive commercial came on.  Admittedly, she's hotter in your photo but the personality of her commercial character overcomes any carnal desires. I have a suspicion that whomever you find beautiful would probably get on my nerves too.  I dont know if this is what your concept would be, but I cant stand ditzy early 20-somethings with a fake tan, fake blonde hair, and big "Paris Hilton" sunglasses, that overuse the word "like" and "totally" and are always talking on their cell phone.  Then they hang up and Tweet about their conversation.  They have 186 friends on Facebook, but IRL all of their friendships are shallow and meaningless, and deep down they fell completely empty and unhappy.  To drown away the emptiness, they drink every chance they get and are desparate for attention from the opposite sex.  Then, in some major way, they hit bottom...

Oh, I know who I am talking about now...

Of course, for some people, moderation means, "I dont have a lot of money to spend on drugs, and every six months, I have to pee in a cup or I lose my job."  If money and a job werent a factor, a lot of people would stay messed up all the time until they die of heart failure, sad and alone...

That's a classic example of a movie where the lead had absolutely nothing to do with how great the movie is. That is a flick entirely made on the script and the side characters. Lindsay's part could have been anyone. She was fine in it, but everyone else was fantastic. I love that movie so much.

I like HBC, but I don't really find her attractive.  Perhaps in her slightly mousy Merchant-Ivory days, but not since then.

But how about we have another G&B?

I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I picked up a pint of it, but it was a most pleasant surprise. That salty caramel swirl & fudge covered potato chips complement themselves nicely within the vanilla bean goodness. Big, big fan here.

Averse to showering, eh? Oh well, she's still all kinds of awesome. What inspired this pick to begin w/ was Suranne Jones performance in "The Doctor's Wife". She was a poor man's Bonham Carter!

Yeah the shower avoidance doesn't bother me all that much, it just means the private thoughts I have about her have bathing elements to them more often than not. ;)

Generally if you can get to a county fair in Wisconsin, they're great; lots and lots of exhibits of local handicrafts and jams and stuff, and livestock.  There are rides and shit too but I actually enjoy all the "corny" stuff in the exhibition buildings way more.  Plus, that's the only place you'll get real, honest-to-goodness beer battered cheese curds.  All the ones I've had at restaurants elsewhere are the kind that use some weird cornmeal crust, and are almost nothing like the real thing.

I bet those REALLY go good with a cold beer too.

Nice photo.

Lara Flynn Boyle as Audrey Horne (if you are ever in Twin Peaks... well, you know).

That soup is like seven kinds of wrong.
Also, I think you'll find that picture is of Sherilyn Fenn, not Lara Flynn Boyle.

Thanks for the correction on the latter.  I never cared for Lara Flynn and was always curious why she was so much more charismatic and human looking on that show.
But you are deadly wrong on the former point.

Ya, I got mixed up.  Lara Flynn played Donna, who sort of becomes a really boring character after the myrder of Laura Palmer is solved (same for James, who gets a really pointless subplot about sleeping with a fem fatale).

Also, another problem that I have with the show: the bookhouse boys concept falls to the wayside pretty quick on that show.  It's an interesting idea and then the show seems to forget that there's a secret vigilante group made up of many members of the male cast who seem to know a lot about Twin Peaks (and then, as far as I can tell, forget that there's a supernatural tinge to the town that they hint at knowing).

she looks like a young katey sagal.

I may have selected unrepresentative pics.  Actually, to me she's quite a bit prettier than Katey Sagal.  Here's a head-on shot, and a partial profile.

Softer jawline and eyes, less obtrusive cheekbones.

Oh, and this beauty is 51 years old.

I first noticed her when she played Walter's wife on Fringe.  But her beauty really stood out on the BBC-produced Sinbad series from Summer 2012 (where this second pic comes from... not a good shot of her from the series, but the only one that seems to turn up in a Google Image search).

Your wife'd best be careful to notice if you are enunciating clearly if you should ever say, "not tonight, honey, I've got a haddock".
