Title: Favorite skit on MST3K
Post by: valeyard on December 15, 2007, 06:19:47 AM
Not the movies but the skits.

What is your favorite skit?

Mine would have to be the one where Bobo and Peanut are trying to fix the neighbors thermonucler device, and Mike and the bots barely escape with the help of the nanos.

In Episode 804 "The Deadly Mantis"

I'm partial to the one where Tom and Crow got the coffin because they claimed they died during a movie and wanted to collect on the movie's promise of a free coffin for anyone frightened to death (I think it was "The Screaming Skull").    Then they tried to return it.

Damn, I just made that sound horrible and dull!

Definitely Joel and the 'bots singing "Idiot Control Now" during Pod People.

"It stinks!"

There are many, but one that comes to mind a lot is the beginning of Time Chasers where Mike floats over to Pearl's ship and they have a nice pleasant chat about why Pearl is evil.  That whole episode makes me smile every time, and the chemistry between Mike and Mary Jo in that and the ending scene was gold.

"Hired- The Musical" is one, but my favorite, hands down, is the "Local Color" sketch in The Amazing Transparent Man.

I will always love the segments from Time Chasers with 80s Mike.  Dude.  And "Endless Frank" is one of my favorite songs from the show, therefore I love that one.

Can't remember the movie but it was in the episode where Mike was on trial for blowing up so many worlds, the segment where Crow tries to help out but half of what he says gets bleeped.  Has me on the floor every time.  All the skits for the trial were pretty funny.

Found it, episode 815: AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.

The one where Mike and the bots pretend to be inbred hicks scares the crap out of me while making me laugh uproariously at the same time.  Plus, any segment where Tom Servo sings is usually a good one.

And also the Hercules movie with Gypsy singing.  Joel cracked me up with "It's so beautiful."

I think my favorite song is "Lovers Loving Love" from Overdrawn At the Memory Bank

All the PBS parodies from that one are hilarious. They really nailed pledge drive season.  ;D Also the "why Pearl is evil" chat that Ronin mentioned.

Just watched Prince of Space again, gotta love the sketch where they're going through the wormhole and the space time continuum was all messed up.  It was like something Abbot and Costello would have done if they'd guest starred on Star Trek.

A tough choice...

My personal favourite is when Mike and the Bots re-create kids TV for the space children in Parts: The clonus horror. Especially when things go weird at the end.

Another favourite is the opening of the Deadly Bees... "Don't make me shoot you! CROOOOOW!!!"

There's lots of greats.  My Top 10 (in no particular order)

1.  Joel's "I Know" sketch (Operation Double 007)
2.  Servo and Crow trying to convince Mike that he's Coatimundi Man (Puma Man)
3.  The one with Mike playing the guitar and singing while the Crow continually interrupts with news about the escalating fire (Girl in the Gold Boots)
4.  Crow as Droppy the Water Droplet (Future War)
5.  Mikey the Mike Sprite (Squirm)
6.  All the Nuveena segments (12 to the Moon)
7.  All the Earth vs Soup Bits (The Incredible Melting Man)
8.  Turkey Volume Guessing Man! (Riding with Death, this episode has a lot of great host segments)
9.  The Bot's Wassailing* (The Touch of Satan)
10.  Goosio! (Final justice)

* If the person who you sing to can't provide the wassail, you are entitled to his debit card and PIN number. Love and joy come to you, unless you can't provide the wassail.  Then severe financial penalties shall come to you. Then severe financial penalties to you.

The "Clown in the sky" thing (I think that was the title) from (Oh crap I think it was) Pod People.  And he asks "What do you think, sirs?"  And Dr. F holds up the OK sign and says, "It STINKS!'

Oh gee, it was in pod people (I think).  I had that video tape a long time ago (I got it for Christmas before I had my second child and she's 10, so it's THAT long ago).  And I recall that is how they closed out the movie, him singing "Clown in the Sky" and then Dr. F. doing the "It' stinks" just like they did in the movie earlier.  That's about as much detail, as I can give.

Frank's first appearance where he's acting like a fast food drive-thru operator. "I'm the god now I'M THE GOD! would you like fries with that?"

Joel & the Bots doing their best Shatner impressions with rubber hands strangling them, from The Crawling Hand

when Gypsy launches bowling balls and other random objects from her mouth

the "Hike your pants up" song from Daddy-O

any sketch where Servo's head blew up

Mike & the Bots as Fabio

Frank as a Mike Douglas-esque talk show host in the beginning of Cave Dwellers

Mary Jo as the happily well-adjusted Jan in the Pan from Brain that Wouldn't Die

It's tough to choose, partly because I have not seen nearly all the episodes, so this may change.
3. "We're a Danger To Ourselves and Others" - from Attack of the Giant Leeches
2. Alas Poor Who? - from Hamlet
1. Adding play-by-play to Sidehackers (after several viewings, I still laugh too hard to catch all the gags.)

I loved in 814-Riding with Death, where Servo made a song about the 70s. But Servo was confused on the nomenclature, which he thought Mike and Crow were talking about the period of 70-79 AD, not the 1970's.  Not that funny when you have to explain it, but i found it funny the first time i saw it.

I forgot all about that song, but it all just flooded back.  I laughed my ass off at that thing.  That and the Canada song where Mike and Crow poked fun while Servo tried to be serious and respectful, but then snapped and went off ultra-hateful toward the Canuks until the other two talked him down.

My favorite was I think during "Prince of Space."  Each crewmember was either one second ahead or one second behind.  It was really clever dialogue.  It's like a skit directly from a Monty Python episode.

I don't like the skits.  Dr. Forrester's stuff is enjoyable enough but I don't like Joel all that much, so that cancels out.  I almost ALWAYS skip the skits.  Now excuse me.  I must prepare for an onslaught of flammage.

While I do like some of the skits, I can't agree with you more. I find Joel to be like nails on a chalkboard. Whenenver a skit depends on him, it invariably bombs. Mike was great, and could actually act! He interacted better with the puppets, and I think had better comic timing.
Dr. Forrester is GOLD, all the time (maybe that's why he's Crow), and TVs Frank is sometimes annoying, but has plenty of moments where he shines. Pearl Forrester is the living embodiment of a "cinematic suppository", no entertaining qualities. Even Bobo and Brain Guy had their moments "My species is pacifist, and only kills out of personal spite." But never Pearl. So that means that the best seasons for the skits for me are half of season 6 and season 7.

I know, I know, this will probably get me flamed, but darn it, I missed out on the Great Flame War. Sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.

While I don't hate the skits entirely, I do have an aversion to the "invention exchanges". With only a few exceptions (Johnny Longtorso, etc.), they just seemed poorly thaught out half jokes, and entirely out of place with the brilliance of the rest of the writing on the show.

I sorta-kinda agree with you, except the Joel part. I enjoyed his interacting with the 'bots and the invention exchanges. I only like a few of the Sci-Fi era skits, so I skip most of those. But I watch all of the Comedy Central ones, because there are so few that I don't like.

I've always loved the skits! It wouldn't have been MST3K without them. I thought that Joel's skits were some of the best in the series. They were usually intelligent and thought-provoking as well as funny and topical. Mike's skits featured more up-front laughs, but lacked the depth and thought of Joel's.

Two that come to mind for me:

1) Mikey the Mike Sprite from the "Squirm" episode - classic stuff.  Had me rolling.

2) Tom Servo's "grandma" skit from "The Touch Of Satan" episode - so obvious that it was coming, but executed so perfectly.  Still keels me over with laughter every time.

Yup, that's the one!  Usually I am amused by them, but that one I laughed my freakin' arse off!

Mine's gotta be from the movie when Mike breaks the Hubble telescope. I love it when the Hubble "falls" out of space.
"Good night sweet Hubble. And may a flight of angels sing thee to thy rest."

YES YES! I dearly love MST3K: The Movie! And they had great skits in that. The Hubble skit kills me every time. "Mike, you killed the Hubble!" Seeing their reactions as they watch out the satelite's window as the Hubble burns up in reentry. Absolutely priceless!

That and any sequence that has Tom Servo's dome exploding.

What episode is Janeway Mike from?

I want to say it was very early in the Sci-Fi era when Mike and the bots were starting to run from Pearl, but I'm not sure.  I'll have to go through my collection and check.

It's the last Comedy Central episode, Laserblast.  When the SOL is falling into a black hole is when mike transforms into Janeway.

Just the way they keep referring to it not as a burger and fries but "the hamburger sandwich" and the "french fried potatoes garnish" is what cracks me up.

Oh, man...there are so many...

I can narrow it down to a few, I suppose.  Crow's neverending guitar solo from The Dead Talk Back.  "The Funkadelic Seventies" from Riding With Death.  The cardboard cutouts from Hobgoblins

But if I had to pick one, it would probably be "Idiot Control Now."  Sure, it was just them aping the crappy performance of a song in the movie, but put all the elements together (the interpretation of the muddled lyrics are what I think puts it over the top), and you have utter comedic gold.  I don't think I've ever laughed harder at anything.

I think this was mentioned before, but I crack up at the skit where Tom is a farmer, Crow is a Llama, and Mike is just sitting there staring creepily. "Did you bring matches for Mikey?" Then he starts petting Crow really hard, and Crow is panicking, screaching really loud.

What episode was that from? I want to watch it again.

Out of nowhere today I started to think of the segment from the Screaming Skull, where Crow decided to imitate a screaming skull to scare Mike.  He waited for Mike to walk by and just quietly said "ra" and Mike screamed his head off and kept hitting Crow with whatever he could grab.  Best part was when he pulled out golf clubs and, screaming the whole time, held one up after another trying to decide which one would be best to hit an evil screaming skull with, even pausing for a moment to give Tom a closer look at the driver before attacking.

A few people were probably wondering what I was laughing about at work.

The Noh Theater/Who's on First skit in Invasion of the Neptune Men had me laughing for hours.  I actually showed it during a presentation once for a Japanese Theater class in college.  Prof was laughing so hard he was crying.  PRICELESS!

515 - Wild Wild World of Batwoman.

I liked the fact that Mike and the bots blew off talking about the really bad batwoman movie and focused on the short about cheating, then Crow cheats....

I also have to chime in on Time Chasers. The whole skit on changing Mike's past was really good. Plus that is one of my favorite 3 movies MST3K riffed.
