Title: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: ChrisHanel on December 04, 2007, 05:28:01 PM
We are pleased to announce the live premiere of Riff Raff Theater!

Where: The Englert Theatre, Iowa City, IA
When: February 1st, 8PM
Ticket info: http://www.englert.org

Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, December 6th, available through the Englert website or their ticket hotline.

Update: Tickets now on sale! - Ticket Info @ The Englert (http://www.englert.org/event_details.php?id=167)

So, what movie are we riffing?

That's right, we'll be performing a riff of Speed for your viewing displeasure. Script submission starts now and ends January 7th.

I'm working on arranging something for everyone who gets jokes into the script. Writers for sure will be able to take a bow at the live show, but we'll try and get prizes and whatnot for everyone that participates. As we progress with this, those prizes will become more considerable, so patience with us as we get the boulder rolling.

Meanwhile, I'll be contacting Raven to see if we're going to Iowa City together.

And yes, in case it isn't clear, we'll be releasing an online riff of Speed as well. :D

How Does This Work?
First, you write a script for the film, your favourite scene, or even just a line or two. We'll cover this in detail below. When finished, send your script to me (Chaos) via PM (Personal Message). I will compile all of the material I receive from you guys, and edit it in with the script that Riff Raff Theater writes.

Unless otherwise stated, Riff Raff Theater uses the "theatrical" release of any given movie, in NTSC format. Any VHS or DVD that has the "standard" theater version of the movie will have the exact same time indexes as each other. This includes widescreen editions as well as HD-DVD / Blu-Ray Disc copies of the movie. If you are using a PAL copy of the DVD, you can still participate! Just be sure to tell us you are using the PAL DVD, and we can convert your script to NTSC format on our end.

Instructions for Writing and Formatting Your Script
Using your DVD's time index display, copy down the exact timestamp that the riff line should be spoken, as well as a quick description of what is happening on screen when you say it, and then the actual riff line to be spoken. Each of these three pieces of information should be together on one line, with a caret symbol (Shift-6 on your keyboard) between each one.

Here are some examples:

Basic
0:02:56 ^ Walter falls over ^ Too many martinis.
0:14:23 ^ "...just as you asked." ^ (As Bruno) Should I take off my pants now?

For Dialogue:
1:03:12 ^ Sitting in cafe ^ (Effeminate voice) So you heard about Jessica, I bet?
1:03:13 ^ same ^ (Effeminate voice) Who hasn't?
1:03:15 ^ same ^ I know!

Multiple Speakers, Single Time Index
1:47:12 ^ piano falls on dog ^ Riffer 1: "The dog peed on that piano when it was still a tree." Riffer 2: "Ah, so the dog had it coming, then?" Riffer 1: "Yes."

For Sounds:
1:45:46 ^ Agnes bends over ^ *fart noise*

For riffs that end at a certain moment:
2:23:12 ^ "... who can say?" ^ (As George) But of course, we all choose our own path, and make our own choices, so when you get right down to it, freedom is really in the eye of those who choose, and... (till 02:23:18)

A few notes and tips:
Please do not double space your script.
Please make sure your script is in order by time index.
PLEASE follow the formatting guidelines. The less time it takes me to add your material to the script, the more time I have to READ your material and make sure the good lines make it into the final cut. :)
Do not feel the need to fill in every single second of the script with material, especially if some areas of the movie have you struggling. Send the stuff you think is really funny. Quality is definitely better than quantity. We don't like having to cut material, but the simple truth is that there is a limited number of seconds in the movie, and we can't overlap jokes, so... :)

The "Fine Print"
By submitting riff material, you agree to allow Riff Raff Theater to use that material for the purposes of recording the audio commentary track, as well as live performances. Riff Raff Theater reserves the right to modify or omit any material submitted to us, or to use that material in future projects, as appropriate. Feel free to use foul language or suggestive material if you feel it fits the situation, but again remember that we may need to edit it out depending on the situation (riffs for live shows in particular will usually need to match the rating of the movie being riffed).

We will continue to post the text script for riff projects showing who wrote each joke, but from now on the script will not be made available until AFTER the mp3 is released... this helps to maintain the fun of watching.

REMINDER: the deadline for this project is January 7th. Don't delay! :)

We're also looking for jokes or ideas that can be used for the live show. Think you have a joke that requires the film to be paused? Want the audience to do something funny (that they can easily be led to do)? Let us know with your submission.

Went to get started on a riff for this one and I was really surpised to see that I don't already own it.  I have tons of these horrible action movies from the 80's and 90's on my shelves.  Anybody seen a cheap copy at a target or wal-mart?  I don't really have the hour to waste driving to the nearest Circuit City/Best Buy.

Oh, you're doing it Rocky Horror style? Okay, wait for the first scene when Sandra Bullock appears, and then throw... your lunch up all over the screen. Haha, I'm kidding of course. You won't have a choice.

My brother and I are seriously considering attending this.  Since it's a 600 mile round trip I'm thinking of renting a car and driving down there.  I'm planning on driving down that Friday morning, getting a hotel room for the night, and driving back up on Saturday.  If there's anyone in the Minneapolis/St Paul area that'd like to go and would be willing to chip in for gas money I'd be willing to drive you down there and back.  If anyone's interested in getting a ride to this thing PM me and we'll work out the details.

Sweet!

Just to be clear, though, this WILL be a Riff Raff Theater mp3 release in addition to being a live show. So you will still have the opportunity to hear your jokes performed, just minus the live show exclusive content (which is centered around audience participation). :)

All of the riffs we put together for the purpose of having a live show will be released as commentary tracks as well, right around the same time as the live show (probably shortly afterwards, so nobody is spoiled at the live show and to give an extra incentive to attend, for those who can).

Post by: Chaos on December 16, 2007, 03:04:01 AM
Absolutely not, sorry.

Speed is still copyrighted material (even though it sucks), and it would be against the law to post video footage of the movie online. It would also violate our contract with the Englert.

We WILL be posting some footage of the pre- and post- show activities, but there will be no footage of the live show itself available. If you want to experience the fun of Riff Raff Theater live, you're going to have to make the trip to Iowa. :)

Oh, I also think we'll be able to make it to the live show.

What's the deadline for this one again?  They just shipped Speed from Netflix today.  I'm gonna give this one a crack too.  I really like the movie, so I should be able to come up with much more than I did for Batman and Robin.

Speaking of Batman, did you guys get my submission for that one?  I used the template and upload function on the RiffRaff Theater website.

I prefer to have them on Sunday proper if possible, but I usually make a second pass at the server first thing Monday morning to see if anyone uploaded anything after I went to bed, so that should be okay too.

At some point when we get up to full speed, there won't be time for things like that, or giving people who have failed to follow the required formatting time to clean up their scripts and resubmit... but right now, everyone is still getting used to this (including me), so obviously a little leeway is a good thing. :)

We're trying to get through the live show, recording Tron, and handing over Batman & Robin before entertaining the idea of another riff.

We'll put up one of the next riffs to a vote, but due to the limited nature of what we can get licensed for live shows, we'll have to give you the list of nominees. Probably. We'll see.

Also, with 2 days left we have very few Speed submissions as it stands. I know everyone's been working their asses off for B&R, but we can't delay the deadline for the Speed submissions due to the February 1st show. If there's any way you can turn in some lines, even a couple, we'd really appreciated it. Thanks.

You're doing all future riffs live then?

Sorry about Speed. Damn you, Walmart, and your anti-Keanureevesishness!

Not all of them, but it behooves us to block ourselves from the possibility. It really depends on how much of an audience we get for this first live show. If we don't get many people... then I guess it won't be much of a problem anymore. :)

Please don't forget that the deadline for submissions is tomorrow, everyone. We could really use some more material for this one, as there haven't been very many submissions yet. Personally, I'm totally fine standing on our own material if necessary, but the whole point of Riff Raff Theater, to me, is that it is a chance for EVERYONE to have their say.

If you want a chance to hear your jokes professionally performed (there WILL be an mp3 release of this in addition to the live show), this riff is a golden opportunity to have your material used, since there are less submissions to compete with than with Batman and Robin. Hurry up and get some material submitted before the deadline! Even if you can only write a few lines, from any spot in the movie, we'll be glad to consider them along with the other submissions. :)

I sent mine in.  I have to agree with Steve-O, after riffing Batman and Robin, it takes a lot of the riffing out of you.  I only got about 30 to 40 jokes.  The deadline crept up on me too.  And i stuck two MST3K jokes in there.....i'd like to  see if you can figure them out. ;)

Even as one of RRT's staff writers, this was still a relatively light script for me, because of the time taken up by the BaR script. Only about one joke every 30 seconds.

Well, if we don't get too many scripts, it will still be a good measure of our Central 5's abilities.

(Meanwhile, we'll try to avoid springing too many projects at you at once from now on.)

Meanwhile, everybody submit what you can!
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: Steve-O on January 14, 2008, 12:15:44 PM
My script is in.  It probably could have made the leap from barely passable to halfway decent with one more pass through the movie, but I'm out of time (and strength.)  I could probably work up the fortitude to help fill in any yawning chasms in the combined script if you guys need it, though.

(Meanwhile, we'll try to avoid springing too many projects at you at once from now on.)

And by all means, feel free to pick a movie that doesn't run two excruciating hours next time.

Just sent my riffs in.

Not too many riffs, but I think that most of them are pretty funny.

At least Speed is more enjoyable to watch than B&R.

Please let me know if you didn't get my riffs submission.

QuipTracks is done. We sent in our script via email. Let us know if you don't get it.

And yes, something must be done about that opening sequence. I like the department idea, but I don't think the audience will be good enough to come up with funny ones on the spot. It is a good idea for scripted jokes though. We might want to make a thread where people can come up with funny departments to help us along in this endeavor.

Well if you guys are going, I'll be there, Chaos and Junkyard aren't preforming I don't think.  We could all have things prepared in case nobody else wants to try.  Don't underestimate people.  That's the point of the audience participation stuff.  Everyone is used to raising there hands in classrooms if they have something to say, I don't see how this would be any different.  And if they mention it before the show starts they'll have a few minutes to come up with something.

If we go that route, I've got about a hundred and fifty "things that don't go together" departments.

There's a store in Annapolis (the "shi-shi" village) near where I live, called "Books and Leather." They sell books and... wait for it... leather. Um... sure? My wife and I have a running joke, where we think up even more ludicrous combinations for the store to start offering. It started as an homage to Angela Landsbury with bedknobs and broomsticks, and has eventually proceeded through nail clippers and bungie cords, to lightbulbs and chainsaws. :)

Turtle wax and coffee beans!!

I was going to suggest actually fast-forwarding through the opening credits. You could do this after you run out of jokes, and then make jokes about how long it is while you're fast-forwarding (there'll probably still be plenty of time...)  A joke implicating some sort of Jarmusch/Kubrick super-clone as the guest-director of the credit sequence would be appropriate... I'm too tired to refine it...

I uploaded what I had.  Hope my idea for the live show hold up.  My copy of the movie had a serious defect and wouldn't play anything after 54 minutes in.  Didn't do a lot but a couple of them were alright.   I agree with everyone who said this was harder after Batman & Robin.   I found myself feeling excited to be watching a good movie.  Yes I said it.  Speed is a good movie.... compared to B&R anyway.

Crap! I just remembered two lines we forgot to go back and add!

0:40:27 ^ "Excuse me, are you out of your mind?" ^ (as Keanu, matter-of-factly) "Nope. Just chalk full of demons."

This other one I wouldn't actually recommend using, as it covers up a couple other lines, but for all the video game nerds, here it is:
0:42:29 ^ "There is a bomb on this bus." ^ Riffer 1: (as Keanu) "Somebody set up us the bomb!" Riffer 2: "What you say!"

I would love to go to the live show, but I am a bit too far away.  I hope it goes well.

I hope that one of my riffs finds it way into the final script.  That would be cool.  While writing my script, I found myself just sitting back and enjoying the movie.  It's been years since I have seen it.  So I didn't come up with as many riffs as I would have liked.  I hope you can use a few of mine.

I look forward to the eventual MP3 release.

The Quiptracks family. How does all that talent fit into Invader Quirk's small, 16 year old frame? Well, looking at his eyes, the power of Satan.

Much to my later annoyance, I managed to forget to take a picture of Raven, but he was there, handing out Hollow Man riffs for everyone's entertainment.

So, a more cohesive rundown of the night, from my perspective:
Me and Junkyard Senior drive the five hours down to Iowa City to see the show.
I show up and meet Chris in the theater, where he is waiting for Todd and Danuuk, so they can do soundchecks. David arrives, and later then so do the rest of the riffers.
They do soundchecks, a few rehersals on the last minutes stuff. I get a bit of a preview of the riffs.
A few things to note about this crew- They're enthousiastic, natural, and theatrical. They manage to riff in their own way, with impressions that, (I'm sorry Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic,) blow most of the MST3K people out of the water. I ended up providing a lot of riffs that required the riffer to speak as Dennis Hopper, and... well, you had to check twice to see if it was actually Dennis or just Todd. Also, during the soundcheck, they were advised to speak louder and clearer to overtake the movie's music, and, amazingly, they did. From start to finish. I would have forgotten and started slurring after maybe 3 minutes.
Well, they opened the doors, and people filed in. They started the show, got introduced, had all the present writers stand up, then started the movie proper.
I'm not going to give anything from the actual show away except for that there was a fun little audience quiz segment during intermission. Prizes were given.
After the show, like I said earlier, the writers loitered in the theater until we were gently urged out, and we reconviened at a coffee shop, where we spent an hour or so chewing the fat. We had possibly the largest collection of fan riffers in the midwest talking there. Jokes were exchanged, as were congradulations and terrible secrets. (I'm looking at you, Quirk. *shudder*)
A fun time was had by all, I think, both writers, preformers, and audience.

We had a lot of fun at the show but couldn't stick around for long after though.  I was glad to see a few of my Jokes made it even though I didn't write too many.  (Batman & Robin hangover)    I think Invader Quirk had my favorite riff of the movie and according to Chris, Steve-O had the other one.  Sorry no spoilers.  There were only a few jokes that fell a little flat but that was probably due to the laughter from the one before it drowning out the riff.  I hope they had enough people to justify a second show.  Don't know if I can make the 10 hour round trip all the time but I'd like to go to another.

And we got a few ideas for what the future riffs might be.   And got to give input on that topic.

Thanks for the pictures and your personal take on the show, guys. I was talking to Chris this morning, and he had a blast and was really pleased with the turnout and the enthusiasm of the crowd. He's a little burnt out today, but he's working on a huge post-show ... um... post similar to the one he did for B&R, which hopefully he will be able to... um... POST, tomorrow. :)

Nothing is set in stone yet, but I think it's a pretty safe bet based on the audience reaction, the rapid word of mouth movement that's going around town, and the fact that one of the Englert bigwigs was in the sound booth for part of the show (laughing her ass off, according to the projectionist) that there will most likely be another show in our future. And I think it's a safe bet that the next show will be even bigger.

Stay tuned for lots more news from Chris. We'll also be making another announcement sometime in the next week. :)

I wanted to record the live show, but it wasn't in the cards just yet. Maybe the next show.

We'll be getting into a recording booth once I get my voice back and something else happens. Like Chaos said, announcement coming soon.

First. A round of applause:
Favorite lines: "These and other tricks you will learn at Keanu Reeves' Acting Camp"
and "The little white guy did it." "What??"

We got 26 lines in. My only complaint is that there were a few lines I wrote that didn't get in where there was just silence. Some of them would have trampled lines in the movie or other riffs but there were some parts that were just blank. Maybe they could be added to the mp3 version?

Cut lines with ample space:

Did you guys make any changes from the live show?

Very minor. We cleaned up a couple of bits here and there where we felt it was dragging, and we also used my handy new gap-eliminating process to fill in a couple of the small holes that were still hanging around in the script (just stuff in the 25-40 second range).

So for those of you who were at the live show, you should recognize pretty much all of the material you've already seen and loved, plus a few more new jokes tossed in for good measure. :)
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: ChrisHanel on April 03, 2008, 12:58:06 PM
I will also warn that we did a good bit of improvising during the live show and nobody really wrote it down. I think a couple of jokes that we threw in on the fly might have made it in for the recording.

We're discussing recording the live shows either for notetaking or to just release as its own thing, not sure yet. Maybe listening to it with a "live studio audience" makes the experience a bit different, not sure.

Recording the audio in the booth of what comes through the mics they are wearing, yes. Recording the whole thing with sound from the movie, probably not. Video cameras, absolutely not. ;)

They'd have to be really careful not to pick up the audio from the movie.
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: bratpop on April 03, 2008, 09:33:55 PM
Not to nitpick, but I've heard commentaries (unofficial) where you can still hear the movie in the background. Now, obviously you don't want to release something that's absolutely blaring because you wouldn't be able to use it as a commentary track, since you would get an annoying echo effect. But even if the whole thing is a little bit audible, I doubt anyone would sue over it. It's no substitute for being tortured directly by the movie. I'm sure it's possible to "duck" the audio recorded through the microphones at the live show, as no mic would be good enough to get really a loud signal from the movie.

Would it sync though?
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: Raven on April 03, 2008, 09:40:40 PM
I didn"t mean legally.  The synching would have double audio from the movie and would have to be dead on or have a strange echo to it.
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: bratpop on April 03, 2008, 09:45:09 PM
Somebody else said legally. I mentioned the echo too. It probably would not be too audible.
Title: Re: Riff Raff Theater: Speed (The Live Show)
Post by: ChrisHanel on April 04, 2008, 08:42:18 AM
If you have a mic that's geared to pick up the audience separately from the performers, it isn't THAT difficult to filter out the background noise of the movie almost completely.

Speed is quasi-edited and a free link to a preview version will be sent out to writers on Tuesday. It would be earlier, but my internet connection at home isn't being installed until then.

Please keep in mind that we intend to sell this riff soon, and to please keep file sharing to an absolute minimum. We, like Rifftrax, are keeping our files DRM-free for your convenience.

Our ex-sound engineer never gave us the intro we recorded, so once my new studio is set up, we'll be recording a new one, as well as an outro giving credit to all the writers individually.

As for the riff itself, i believe it to be 100%, unless there are any sync issues i missed.

Yup.  Good stuff, Maynard!  I'd give a shout-out to my favorite lines, but I don't want to spoil anything for anybody.

Sync seemed to be off by a second or two right at the beginning, but after tweaking it a bit, it stayed steady throughout.

I did notice a few lines that seemed much quieter than the rest of the riff, though such moments were pretty rare.  Don't know if it's worth the effort to go through and boost the levels on those.
