Title: He-Man She-Ra Secret of the Sword fan-riff available 11/30/07
Post by: RoninFox on November 27, 2007, 03:58:32 AM
My first attempt at a fan-made riff is just about ready to be sent out into the world.  For my first target I picked the 1985 animated film Secret of the Sword, the movie that drew in boys by being the first ever He-Man movie in theaters while introducing girls to She-Ra for the first time.  Here's a quick DVD cover I threw together, needs a bit more work.

Looking forward to hearing back from people on this.  I'll say off the bat that I had trouble with the audio quality on this one, and I'll probably hold off on making more until I can invest in some better equipment, but it was a lot of fun and I learned a lot from the process.  Keep your eye on this thread for the download link this Friday.

Edit:  A few hours early, FoxTrax 1 is now available!  DivShare File - FT-The Secret of the Sword-V1.zip (http://www.divshare.com/download/2931025-6e2) Just click and save.  The file is large, as of yet I've been unable to shrink the file down, if I can get it zipped up smaller I'll post that version too.

If you're looking for this on dvd, you'll be looking for this.

It's the "Best of She-Ra" set and the movie takes up disc one.

If you look through used stuff you can also use this.

It's just an alternate cover of the same set.

Wow, it wasn't until I bought the Aeon Flux Rifftrax that this came to my attention.  I decided to name my fan-riff "FoxTrax" to include part of my forum name, I did this without knowing that FoxTrax was also the name of the lame glowing puck used on NHL games shown on the Fox network.

Whoops.

So what does everyone think, should I keep the name and just live with the fact that I unknowingly lifted it from lame unnecessary hockey technology?

Hockey sucks. Keep the name.

Convincing argument, the name stays.

It looks like the file is going to be pretty big.  Its just over 80mb whether it's zipped or not.  How can I change that?  Is there a setting I can change or would I need a separate zipping program.  Just using the built in windows archiving feature as it is.

You could always just lower the bitrate of the original file.

Well if you aren't taking advantage of a stereo mix I would say make it a mono channel mix, lower the bitrate to 96kpbs, lower the sample rate to 44khz, and zip the hell out of it. See where that gets you.

Hmm.  I suppose that's where it'd be an advantage to having someone more tech-savvy nearby.  That could apply to my roommate, but our work schedules aren't the easiest to work around.  I've already got it on mono channel, and 44khz is the default sample rate.  Not sure how to change the bitrate.

dBpoweramp music converter might do something to that effect unless your roommate has sound forge, that also works.

sound forge

All I could think about upon reading that was this:

Which would of course lead to Zeus, the Guitar Launcher:

Now Available!  Click this link to save.  DivShare File - FT-The Secret of the Sword-V1.zip (http://www.divshare.com/download/2931025-6e2)

Any constructive feedback is welcome, as I'm hoping to improve before I release my next riff.  Anyone know where I can get a real good microphone?

Thank you, looking forward to hearing what you think.  So far I've had 10 downloads, so it's already gotten to more people than I was expecting.   ;D

Just finished watching it. A lot of fun, and a few really good lines. The one thing I might say against it is that you may be a little too jaded towards this stuff, because there were a few moments where I was amazed you didn't pipe up. You were probably just letting the movie speak for itself at points, I imagine.

Over, good job. A fun couple of hours!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.  The unfortunate moments of silence were actually crippling writers block.  Some of them I thought of jokes for, but they just didn't turn out funny.  Hopefully I can work through that next time.

Great job!  I still have about 30 minutes left to watch but I have been enjoying it so far!
So are you going to treat us to the He-man and She-ra Christmas Special as a follow up  ;)

Greg McDuck and I actually gave that a try, and both wrote a script for it.  He was going to record a finished version, but unfortunately it didn't make it out before Christmas.  I'm still hoping to see a finished version of it soon though.

I finally got time to watch your trax this afternoon.  Very funny stuff.  Loved the moral thing at the end and the Stephen Colbert line.  Some great lines throughout.  Props on riffing a cartoon.  With nothing going on on the backgrounds the entire time, I can understand how this would be hard to riff.  Didn't really notice to many gaps so good job overall.

I want to thank everyone who's given this track a shot, recently checked my DivShare account, and even though I know the DL count isn't really accurate to the amount of actual downloads I've received, its still nice to see that it's reached 99.

Ok, just watched this and I have to make a comment on this riff:

(Cringer sucks all the meat off of a fish leaving just the bones)
Riff: So that's why Adam keeps him around.

I mean, wow. I don't think any gay He-man jokes will ever top this one.
