Title: Round Table Riff: Harry Potter RELEASED
Post by: ChrisHanel on November 25, 2007, 01:49:32 PM
Release Page (extremely basic to save bandwidth) (http://www.chrishanel.com/rifftrax/hpriff.html)

(This audio file rated R for language, you've been warned. Not for kiddies.)

And as of right now, I suppose I can stop with the endless tweaking. Enjoy, everyone.

Listening/Viewing Party tonight in the ChatRoom

Come by the chatroom at 8PM Eastern tonight, as we'll be getting everyone to sync up at once and enjoy a nice group bashing of Harry Potter.

Sadly, my (used) copy of Harry Potter wont come for a few more days from Amazon.com, so I will not be able to join the listening party.

I'm listening to the MP3 now (yes, I am a freak that way) and it sounds great.

I also plan on listening to the Mp3, but that's more due to the fact that I've got the Philosophers Stone (PAL Version) rather than the Sorcerers.

Awesome!  Great work, Chris and everybody.

The track seems a bit on the loud side, though.  I may have to normalize it before I listen to it.

Evolution117:

Feel free to listen to the mp3 if you like, but FYI we will also be releasing a PAL version (and hopefully a Canadian NTSC version as well) in a week or so.

Sweet, though I am planning on getting the movie on HD-DVD for Christmas, so the NTSC version'll probably synch with that one anyway.
Title: Re: Round Table Riff: Harry Potter RELEASED
Post by: Chaos on November 25, 2007, 03:09:00 PM
From everything I have ever seen, HD / BR versions of movies always synch up properly with the standard DVD versions, providing that it's the same version of the movie itself (i.e. theatrical release, extended cut, etc.). There are a couple of occasional weirdnesses with specific movies based on regional edits (Casino Royale and Eragon both suffered from this, actually), but usually any US copy you buy will be the same edit.

I just downloaded it.  I'll try to watch it later tonight.  Should we all post our thoughts here in this thread, or in the other existing thread?

Either one would be fine, but I think this one would be better - the other thread was originally for the conceptualizing, this thread is for the actual release.

Will you be joining us in the chat room at 8pm eastern (GMT -5), or will you be watching it on your own? Either way, enjoy! :)

Won't be able to start watching until later than that, so I'm afraid I'll have to miss the chat.

And now, for something completely different (only not).

Somewhere along the way of editing the Harry Potter riff (probably after the first feedback was starting to come in from the 40 minute rough cut I posted a while back), the gears started spinning around in my head. The concept that we were producing here deserved more than a pat on the head and an "awww, look at the cute widdle fans" sympathy clap. This was definitely succeeding at entertaining people. It also happened to coincide with something that I've been trying to set up in my hometown. And so, phone calls were made and handshakes were given, and now, we have a little operation on our hands.

I am pleased to announce the creation of a new fan riffing project called Riff Raff Theater. We plan to operate much the same as we already have: a title is chosen, we will write a script, community people submit their own scripts or single lines, those scripts are edited into one final draft, and the draft is given to professional performers, who knock out the final audio. As far as how we choose the titles, some will be chosen by us, and others will be decided 100% by the community - we'll make a "short list" of 10-20 titles that are available to us, and you will decide by your votes which we do. The entire purpose of Riff Raff Theater is to apply the power of the mob to riffing. We'll also be applying all of the "How NOT to do this" that we've learned from before. In addition, we're going to be doing more frequent riffs, offering prizes for contributing writers, and most exciting for me, we've signed an agreement with a local theater here in Iowa to start doing live shows in February.

Before I wrap this up and open the thread to questions, I do want to state up front that RiffTrax has been fantastic throughout this entire process, and we're planning to be first in line when RiffTrax opens the door for fan riffs to exist on the website. We have been in regular communication with RiffTrax about their plans for fan riffing, as well as our project in particular. We even ran the name by them before making a final decision on what to call ourselves. This announcement comes at kind of an awkward moment with the whole mini-drama over Harry Potter and the timing thereof, but I respect Mike and the rest of the RiffTrax crew too much to believe it's anything other than a funky coincidence.

Other things I should throw out now: Yes, Tron will be next along with one other film yet to be announced. No, riffs will not take 5 months to complete, we hope to have the time between title announcement and release down to 6 weeks, and hopefully at least one new riff every month (yes, that means we will be working on more than one riff at a time, but at different stages of production). The official members of the team at this point are me (head writer, performer), Chaos (writer, general techno-geek guy), Junkyard (writer), and the members of Comics in Action, the local group of performers who will be doing the recordings and live shows with me.

Riff Raff Theater: it's like a lynch mob, with popcorn.

The sound is a bit off, the louder the riffers speak it seems it gets more distorted and hard to understand.

Yeah, we didn't have the best recording equipment for the first run-through. Chris has better stuff (and software, too) now, so we shouldn't have that problem in the future.
Title: Re: Round Table Riff: Harry Potter RELEASED

I had to give up watching it after about an hour.  The sound problems were making it very hard to understand what the riffers were saying, and sometimes they were speaking so fast that it was also hard to understand.

At first I didn't like the riffer's voices, but as I grew used to them it didn't bother me too much.

On the plus side, the movie and riff were in sync from the beginning and stayed that way until I turned it off.

I will say that it was a good first effort, and if you can get the audio problems sorted out the next one should be great.

Some LOL riffs:

I had trouble with the sound (and from the forum feedback, it aparently wasn't my speakers), but I finished the Riff. Very good overall. I think if I could have uderstood all of them, it would have been even better.

Gotta give credit for going as far as you did on some of them. "What keeps poking me in the back? That had better be a wand back there." Wow.

Also, good work sounding like Mike Kevin and Bill in the reactionary comments. You guys definitely know your Rifftrax.

Finished it. It was worth the wait, by my opinion. Meanwhile i know just enough about Harry Potter to get that "Avada Kedavra!" crack. Hilarious.

On a side note, I imagine that, by virtue of the riffers's compulsions and the fact that the concept is open submission, I think we might need to abandon any idea of keeping the scripts within a certain rating. Not sure what arguments Chris might make for or against, but I DO know for a fact that he's the projenitor of the suggestion that Harry had a wet dream about horses, so....

Grr... yeah, if you've been following the Harry Potter thread, we know how unhappy I've been with the recording quality. It's not the mix itself, it's the levels that I had set when we recorded everything. We constantly red-lined and when the source audio is bad, it's not within my ability to "save" it.

Between starting this process and now, I've become much more adept with the mixer and updated to all new software, which I used recently for another audio project in which the sound editor exclaimed, "I wish everyone turned in audio as high quality as yours." So, yeah, it's going to get better. Have patience.

Though--what happened to the "Those are Jews, Harry" joke? That one killed me.  Just too racy (pun intended)?

Yeah. When we recorded it, Brian delivered the line. The fact that he's half-Jewish tames it down, but the listener doesn't know that, and after going back and forth on it, I removed it. It was actually the very last tweak I made before publishing the final mp3-- even after laying down sync lines. Removing it actually helps the following joke because you hear Hagrid's entire line before the David Bowie mention, and it makes more sense.

I'm not really worried about it being gone, overall-- there are so many other jokes we're going to hell for anyways.

I think we might need to abandon any idea of keeping the scripts within a certain rating. Not sure what arguments Chris might make for or against, but I DO know for a fact that he's the projenitor of the suggestion that Harry had a wet dream about horses, so....

Due to the need to make our live shows more family friendly, scripts that get the dual use of mp3 download *and* live show will be PG-13, maximum. Tracks produced without the intention of being performed live might not have that restriction.

My instinct is to just always accept whatever jokes you send, and then we'll make the decision over what's too much and what's okay during the script editing process. That way we're not trying to censor writers from sending in what may be better material.

Just a thought- Would it be tasteful to link to the riff from the Harry Potter part of the message board, when it comes up tomorrow?
Title: Re: Round Table Riff: Harry Potter RELEASED
Post by: Chaos on November 26, 2007, 05:34:21 AM
Hey guys,

bryak: we will be releasing a PAL version "soon." That's not soon as in EverQuest patch soon, that's soon as in hopefully within 1 week. Also, I want to thank you again for your submissions to the script, they went over very well during the chatroom viewing last night.

Junkyard: my instinct says it would be in bad taste to post a message in the Harry Potter RiffTrax thread/forum pointing back to here. We've already made the people who read the boards aware that ours is out, I don't think we should be pushy. If someone from staff chooses to point it out, that is fine, but I don't think it's our right to push into their territory and say, "We have a riff of this, too."

Oh, and regarding script submissions, I agree completely with Chris. I'm much more inclined to accept all submissions as is, regardless of content, to give us the original material to work with... as long as everybody understands that we *may* have to end up editing it down at our discretion due to content, depending on the circumstances. Once the site is fully online and we're chugging along at our normal pace, we'll be sure to include content ratings for the tracks so you will know whether or not they are young child appropriate material (though obviously they would not be official ESRB ratings, since they don't recognize audio commentary tracks as a valid medium... our ratings would just be a self-imposed guideline).

A good first release. Well done gang.

Now, I offer a few general suggestions on "quality standards" to keep in mind in regards to future releases (aside from anything to do with the technical aspects of sound, which you've obviously already learned a great deal about):

1) I recommend a bit more spacing between riffs. A constant stream isn't quite as good, in my opinion, as letting the movie catch the viewer's attention, then commenting "out of nowhere" on something related to what you've been watching (you know, like you might when you and friends are casually watching a not-so-great movie together. It would seem more natural as well.). The riffs in harry potter, while generally good, seemed strung together so much in certain instances that I found myself unable to concentrate on the movie at times. If you think about it, this weakens the effectiveness of a riff, because you didn't see or hear what just occurred on screen and so miss the full effect of the riff. Now, granted, if you've seen the movie before you'll likely still catch it, but I don't see that as a reason not to riff in a manner that assumes the viewer has NOT seen the movie. Sure, you won't get to cover every possible opportunity for a joke, but that's just how it goes. You have to draw the line somewhere for the sake of overall quality.

2) In the admitted spirit of snobbishness, I also generally recommend avoiding juvenile humor whenever possible. Juvenile humor, the likes of fart/other-noise jokes, sexual innuendo, etc., are so common, so rarely anything non-obvious, that they are essentially an unimaginative form of comedy in my opinion. I see that as the 'easy (and low) road' in comedy that leads to sameness and pandering to the lowest common denominator. In order to maintain a reputation for above-average quality riffs, I believe it important to encourage as much creativity as possible. Think about it this way. We're all here to make fun of movies and tv shows and such right? And what is one of the major complaints we have about Hollywood? That it panders to the lowest common denominator when creating content, and thus passes on attempts to create something great, just because grandma or some unimportant neilson rating family decides this unique show won't make the broadcaster as much money as this other, generic show. Well, what is juvenile humor other than pandering to a low common denominator? I say to you brothers and sisters (Martin Luthor King voice) "I have a dream, in which we all raise the bar! In which we raise the standards by which we live and view entertainment". OK, so I'm over the top now, but I hope I've gotten my point across.

3) In relation to points number 1 and 2, and in addition to the edit job you guys already do in sifting through riff submissions to choose which ones to use, remember that you don't necessarily need to fill in a slot of time with a riff at all, even if a riff for that time slot exists in one or more of the submissions you recieve. Allow yourselves to "let go" of a time slot in the movie in which no exceptional riffs make the cut. Don't feel you have to accept sub-par riffs just to fill in the riff-silence. It's not that anyone expects perfection in every moment, because that's impossible anyway, and far too high-strung. I'm really just saying "Go easy, don't try to force a joke into the moment that doesn't cut it, and generally tweak your filters up a notch or two."

Again, though, good job on Harry Potter. I don't mean by these three suggestions to imply your riff was bad. It's no 10 out of 10, but neither is every official Rifftrax (most aren't, in fact, as that implies absolute perfection), and not all of yours will be either of course. But that's alright, because "above average" is all we need to be happy I think. :)

It's somewhat funny, but regarding point 3, while I did find a few places were too packed, having read the full script, I couldn't help but admire their restraint.

It's somewhat funny, but regarding point 3, while I did find a few places were too packed, having read the full script, I couldn't help but admire their restraint.

Well, it's going to be a matter of opinion on what's funny or not of course. I'd have to rewatch it and actually pay attention to / document each riff to give you any specifics (or, alternately, get a copy of the script), but I found jokes here and there that I sort of thought "hmm. I can see where you came up with that. It's a valid comment to make about that bit certainly. Not a bad comment, really. it's just... 'eh', as a joke to me". Not that I'm claiming I can do "oh so much better" or anything.

Anyway, like I said in the beginning, it was generic advice for future releases. Something to keep in mind is all. I wrote it simply to remind you all to keep pushing for quality, in a similar way your coach in <insert sport here> reminds you to 'keep your eye on the <sport object>' and you do, most of the time, but hey you're only human and not every play goes as planned. No biggy.

I had a 20 minute response written up, Jinto, but my browser just crashed and I lost it. So for now I'll just say thanks for your feedback... we appreciate you taking the time to put your thoughts together so thoroughly and share them with us. You've got some points that I'd like to address.

Sometimes, when I know I'll be writing a long post, I'll just do it in a simple text editor like notepad, just to avoid situations like that, heh.

As for putting thoughts together thoroughly, I think you're a hippie on pot if you think that long-winded mess was intelligible, because I can ramble like a drunk trying to explain myself at times.

Here's the Cliff Notes version of my post for you lazy readers:
1. Don't string riffs together in a constant barrage.
2. Avoid 7th grade (and below) humor.. wait, I forgot how kids are these days. Avoid high-school or below humor.
3. Don't feel a need to insert a joke that seems sub-par to you, just because you don't have anything else to put in that time slot, and you're thinking to yourselves that maybe you've let the movie go too long without uttering a riff.

It's amazing what sleep can do to your concizing skills. (I can even make up new words. Aren't I talented?)

:P

P.S. - And yes, this is advice I'd give to Rifftrax proper too. While more practiced at this (obviously), even they, at times, go too low-brow on the jokes (for my personal tastes), talk a bit too much over the movie, etc.

Watched this last night and I was very entertained.  Well done on the project, what's most impressive to me is with a handful of exceptions it still felt like the riffs were coming straight from the riffers, not the multiple contributers you had, and that really is the effect you want.  Good stuff all around, now I get to watch it again with Mike, yay!

I watched the first hour and a half last night and wanted to post my thoughts.

1.  The audio problems left something to be desired with the one riffer and I couldn't understand a lot of what was being said.   Any chance you could post the script somewhere or email it to me.(I didn't read through the other thread to see if this had been done yet or not)  I'd hate to miss out on some good jokes simply because they weren't recorded all that well.   And I'm not sure if this has been removed or not but I'm really curious who wrote what joke.  Some of you are pretty funny bastards and I want to know who.

2.  In response to what Jinto was saying about the riffs being on top of each other.  I was pretty sure that this was going to be the case just because the number of contributors was so high.  I don't think this would be a problem if you could all watch the movie together, but it's impossible with how spread out the writers are.

3.  I guessed on where the omitted "Jew" line was and said it out loud for my fiance and then told her you took it out.  She laughed really hard and said you should have left it in.  (She's one of the most PC people I know and still laughed)   In the future if you are worried about something being over a decency line, if you think it's funny, leave it in and have another riffer call him out on it.

Looking forward to the last hour.

Once Riff Raff Theater is fully online, we'll be adding many options. In addition to giving out prizes for contributions, we'll also be having contests, and we're definitely going to have ways to show recognition to our contributors. Again, mob power is what we are all about, so we want to do everything we can to encourage you guys to contribute (above and beyond the thrill of hearing someone perform the joke you wrote, as Steve-O, Greg, Katie, bryak, and Junkyard can attest to).

We'll have account profiles and forums over on our site as well, and I see no reason why we can't offer the ability to upload a picture of yourself into your profile, and (with an on/off permission in your profile settings) allow that picture to be seen on the contributors page for each release, assuming we can get that to work logistically (we're learning more and more about the recent advances in website coding as we go). Depending on how many contributors end up in any given release, and whether or not we have any DVD cover creators join our community, I could see us offering DVD cover files with an open space for you to paste in your own picture, along with a full list of credited contributors already included, or something like that.

We're hoping to be able to offer some merchandise, too. Everybody loves T-shirts. Except for people with no arms, I guess. :)

By the way, I linked to the riff on the official Harry Potter Movies Message Board.
http://boards.harrypotter.warnerbros.com/web/thread.jspa?messageID=4125683&tstart=0#4125683

We can see what responses it gets, or if it's just taken off the board. (I'm not sure what their policy on linking is, but I think I put it in the right spot.)

Meanwhile, if the board is suddenly filled with angry Potter fans, I just want to say that I am very sorry, and that Chaos made me do it. (Better you than me, mate!)

I'm working on my DVD conversion now w/ Pinnacle Studio 9.4..
The trac lined up Perfect from start to finish - no drift at all!
Had to turn up the movie volume to +5 (had to do the same for the RiffTrax release), but had to really turn down the Round Table Riff  volume to -20 (had to turn down the RiffTrax volume to -5 for proper sound levels).
I'll watch it this evening and give another update.

You know, I've boycotting this series after the third movie gave me a migraine, and I had no intention of ever listening to either this riff NOR the official RiffTrax based on that... but now, I think I have to listen to the fanriff at some point.  I mean, come on!  It won the chance to see Patrick Swayze in his natural habitat.  (His natural habitat being, of course, nearly naked, smug-looking, and full of fluffy haired goodness.)

My wife thought the running gag about the horses was hysterical, and she's usually pretty touchy about such things. All I can say in our defense is that it really is just a matter of taste... some people really don't believe there is a line (look behind you... there's a line), while others find particular subjects unpleasant, and still others believe that some areas are completely untouchable no matter what. But, it takes all types to make a world, and if we can give some of those people an hour and a half of chuckles (or a reasonable portion thereof), and mabye hock a couple of T-shirts in the process, then I'll be a happy little nerd. :)

Just watching it now.  Thought it was pretty darn funny, though I also agree that we could have done without some of the swearing.  The casual use of the f-word, specifically, seemed never to actually serve the joke.  It was just kind of there, when other words would have been equally funny.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to finishing this, and then to Tron!  Maybe I'll send in something for the Tron riff.  I have to watch it again to see what I can come up with.

In reguards to the F-bomb and other swearing.  I'm not opposed to it in daily usage so I'm not against it in riffing either.  I realize that Mike and Co.  don't but by you guys swearing it helps to establish your own style.  Don't worry about it.  But I would let people know ahead of time that it's in there.  (by at least giving your best guess at a rating.)
Title: Re: Round Table Riff: Harry Potter RELEASED
Post by: ChrisHanel on December 02, 2007, 05:59:44 PM
In regards to the rated R nature of the riffs:

There is a good amount of truth to the fact that it's something that help show our individuality, though I would never say "Use the F-bomb here, because we'll sound better." It's not a conscious effort, it's just how we talk. I remember very early on in the recording process saying that I wanted to try and keep things PG-13, but the natural rapport between the three of us and how we joke together is what you hear on the recording.

You also don't hear about a dozen jokes Fig made followed by me saying, "There's no way that's going in the cut."

I don't know if I've specifically said it here in the thread, but Fig, Brian, & I have all relocated away from each other after we finished school, so I have two guys from my improv group coming in to join the lineup. It's going to cause for a different vibe and chemistry between us that should result in something wholly different. I also know that in order to do the live shows, we're going to keep things on the PG-13 side. (If we're doing a movie that's rated R anyways, then we might change our minds.)

In summary, I myself have no problem with the crude humor, but you will probably see less of it in subsequent projects due to the nautre of the beast.

The swearing actually seems kind of natural to me, because Chris and I are both what I call "angry nerds." Casual swearing is just literally part of our personna. I've actually gotten into a bit of trouble in a work environment from time to time because of it, even though I usually demand and get my own office when I work onsite. There's just no pleasing some people, I guess. ;)

If I assumed at the time that it was one of Greg's, was it still wrong that I found it so funny and clever?

How come we got unstickied and Greg's Top 50 horror movies (which hasn't been posted in for over a month) is still sticky? :)

I don't know why the fuck everyone thinks you cursed so frequently. The first utterance was in Ollivander's, and I couldn't even understand it.

If it wasn't for appropriately inappropriate language, "Wizard People, Dear Reader" wouldn't be half as amusing. Instead of doing nothing during Quidditch, Harry just sits around cursing while they lose. Don't act like you wouldn't, when you're the wizarding equivalent of deep left field.

I wonder how often something like that happens to the pros.  I think I remember hearing Mike say something along those lines talking about MST3K in that interview he and Kevin did for Rhino.   :D

If it's a good line, it's a good line, if it's yours be proud.   ;)

So is it fair if Kevin gets smacked for a pun Mike wrote?

So, is Riff Raff's "Die in a fire, Fig" more violent in nature than Rifftrax's "Slap noises?" In any case, I thought it was a little funnier, if only for the novelty.

I'm pretty sure we're not very original using that statement, but it was certainly a staple around our household at the time of the recording.

It worked for me, it was funny and it got the point across.

Thanks for all your help by the way, BathTub. Haven't talked with you directly on any of this.

Yeah, sorry about that, BathTub. We crammed a heck of a lot of material into it. :)

Yeah, I did one sync line per chapter on the DVD. Was probably a tad overkill.

Honestly I appreciate a lot of synch lines.

Since I failed to do this I'd like to say I have listened to this and enjoyed what I could understand quite a bit. My only complaint would be the distortion from the mic levels being a bit too high which makes some of the riffing indecipherable, maybe it was just my computer. If you need any help audio-wise please let me know.

Yeah they really should think about re-recording it, or if they do a live show of it record that.  I liked it though.

If anyone can help me make a Youtube preview video of the Harry Potter riff, I would be eternally grateful -- I've been unsuccessful twice to get the video ripped properly and I just don't have the time to futz with it at the moment.

If you can help out, msg me and i'll shoot you the info on what scene we want to use.

BathTub is putting it together for us as time allows... we're just waiting to hear back from him on it.

Does anybody know the chapter where this happens?

Where Harry's in the forest with Firenze and Draco.

Draco: "The forest? I Thought that was a joke!"

Hey, to all those who worked on the Harry Potter riff (I guess it would be lower case, right?), fine job! Well paced, funny stuff. I hope you'll do more.

For all your effort, I award you this picture of Patrick Swayze.

sorry to revive a dead thread, but I haven't been here since this started.. and as one of the contributing riffers on the project, who hadn't seen Mikes reply, I am tickled. :)
i honestly still havent been able to watch/hear the final project. I am way to easily distracted :( I will get on that tonight though :)

I just rewatched this one and just wanted to say how much I still enjoyed it and it has held up even with the Rifftrax version I've seen more. I just wish you'd re-record it for better sound (although I remember noticing the sound issues more the first time, maybe because I expect them now).

By weird coincidence, I just happened to drop by today for the first time in forever, and I can make that happen!

RiffTrax Round Table Harry Potter Riff (https://www.dropbox.com/s/hz7rmbm381ojxhn/rtrt_hp1.zip?dl=0)

Available for a limited time (like, say, five years, when I once again check my public Dropbox folder and realize it's still in there).
