Title: Commercials we LOVE
Post by: SmilinJackRoss on October 22, 2007, 01:32:09 PM
In order to keep a balanced universe, here's a thread for those commercials that entertain us or make us laugh.

I'm a pretty big fan of clever beer commercials.  This Bud Light one is a current favorite of mine.

This new Arby's commercial with the dancing chimps kicks ass!!!

Still wouldn't eat there if you paid me...

Though this is the Canadian version, it's essentially the same as the American version.

In general, I do not like "psych out" commercials where you think it is a commercial about X, but it turns out to be a commercial about Y. In addition, I am not a huge fan of Geico commercials. However, this one has always been a well-executed classic in my opinion:

Here's the only Geico one I like.  We are in a deer heavy area and I had a deer almost run into me while walking one night so I laughed pretty hard when I saw this.

Superbly executed commercial. I was taken in by its authenticity as well. Can you imagine how horrid it would be to live in that house for an entire year?? I personally would die if I had that bed to sleep on.

Seriously. The first time I saw it, my reaction was "You have GOT to be kidding me! ... ... oh... hahahah!!!"

I'm 6' 2"... looking at that bed terrified me. My feet hang off the end of normal beds, a fact that causes me constant discomfort. Going to my in-laws' house is pure torture, because their shitty spare room bed is roughly 5 feet long. At home, we had to buy a sleigh bed just so my feet would have somewhere to hang that wasn't pressed against the footboard. Now,  although I'm still pretty uncomfortable, I at least have a nice little nook to tuck my feet into. ;)

I think my all time favorite add I only saw once.  It showed a little boy walking on a sidewalk.  Two bully kids are hanging out a window throwing coins at him every day when he goes home from school.  The kid picks up the coins as he's running away.  It shows the same thing through all kinds of different weather and through all  4 seasons.  The bullies just keep laughing and throwing coins.  Then it shows the bullies looking for the kid and then there eyes get really big and a shadow falls across them.  It shows the kid swinging a giant wrecking ball towards the building the bullys are in and then says "Put your money to good use."  The commercial was for some investment company or bank that I can't remember and I don't think it aired nationally.  It was pretty funny though.

It's actually a Nike spot from 2000, tied in with the Olympic games (the girl is American Olympic runner Suzy Favor Hamilton.)  It was taken off the air fairly quickly, in part because some viewers complained it was too scary, but mostly because the usual gang of overreacting boneheads felt it condoned violence against women.

Back when Seanbaby actually updated his site once in a while, he wrote a typically hilarious piece (http://www.seanbaby.com/news/nike.htm) about the whole brouhaha.

I love pointing out to my buddies that the machine will beep no matter which direction you are walking, so the guy with all the rings would beep every time he walked through the arch, thus taking all the fun out of the commercial.  ;)

I still love that new BSG commercial with the dark background and the changing faces.

Most of all, I think that when they show Adama's face at the end, he really looks like a man carrying the entire fate of the human race on his shoulders. EJO is an incredibly good actor and the expression he does in that second is a work of art.

Yup, he has done some incredible work on BSG.  Listen to the podcast for Maelstrom and you'll hear that he cost the production a bit of money doing something emotional (and unscripted) at the end of that episode....

My favorite commercials from the super bowl:

Tide: The stain that makes noise.
Bud: Hank the Clydesdale training like "Rocky".
Coke: Parade balloons.

Um, if you're referring to that rumor that he smashed a ship model that cost thousands of dollars in an unscripted bit, that's been debunked from here to caprica.

Besides, you saw them building the ship in earlier episodes.

Um, if you're referring to that rumor that he smashed a ship model that cost thousands of dollars in an unscripted bit, that's been debunked from here to caprica.
Besides, you saw them building the ship in earlier episodes.

Odd that Ron would say it was a rented museum quality piece if it wasn't true.  Do you have links to pages that say it was a prop?  I can't find any.

It always looked too finished to me as he was "building" it.

I was on the SFC BSG forums and they said it was a net myth, I think ron is pulling people's legs.

I cannot believe they would not tell the cast the model was valuable if it was, and that EJO would forget it.

Well, Ron did mention it again in a later podcast when the broken ship was in the background of a shot, and that it was covered by insurance.

But yes, you would think the prop managers would have told Eddie that the model was expensive at some point in previous episodes, so I guess it could be Ron making up a story for some reason.

Oh well, enough off topic stuff...

Had to go watch the Budweiser "Hank" and Coke parade balloon ads on youtube again today, I thought it was cool to have Charlie Brown get the coke at the end of battle for it. But pretty slim pickings this year, most of the ads were creepy or just plain bad, more in the commercials to hate thread than this one....

Just saw a funny commercial for the Royal Bank of Schotland, with an old guy golfing with a young guy, telling him how when he was young he would hit the ball over a tree onto the green, after the young guy hits his ball into the tree comes the punch line...

Actually, that's more the fault of the designers of the clothing, who foolishly thought kids nowadays still listen to Nirvana.

What? Cowboy boots are not impractical. They are a simple and efficient way to announce to everyone around them of their severe mental retardation and warn people not to take anything they say seriously. Just like the Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on their truck. That is a useful feature and people should be appreciative of their candor and honesty.

I wondered whether to put this in the commercials we hate thread, but I realized I actually kind of like it.

Suzuki SUV commercial, I think. Your average shite involving carefree young adults doing wacky, free-spirited crap revolving around buying a huge inner tube and trucking it around a city on the top of the SUV. They bring it to a little stream in a forest, change into swimsuits and leap off a huge jagged rock some 15 feet above the surface of the water, which, were I to guess from the bank of the stream, couldn't be any deeper than two feet.

They didn't flail in agony as their femurs shot up into their ribcage, but I like to think they did.

I love the new phone commercial with Ozzy Osbourne and his past trouble. First one couldn't handle dictation. Ozzy mumbles something to the guy and the guy stands there with a blank look on his face. The next guy kept odd hours... The guy brings ozzy breakfast in bed at probably 8 am or something. He is next seen running out the door with the tray of food thrown after him. The new phone does all that and gives direction. It tells Ozzy to "turn left" it cuts to Ozzy turning left. He is in his own house and it gave him directions to the bathroom "Oh that's new.. " mumbles Ozzy.

The first started off the whole chain of funny Meijer commercials that now air (Meijer is a grocery/retail store in the midwest, sort of like Wal-Mart, if you don't know).  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw0zRWcEV0I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw0zRWcEV0I)  It didn't air for very long, but I thought it was amusing.

The second I'm shocked nobody has mentioned yet (at least, not that I know of; I did a search in this forum and nothing came up).  This aired at the Super Bowl and stars the late, great Robert Goulet in a truly bizarre commercial...

Nothing says "I think you're fat, and I want you to learn how to be a skank" like the gift of this training video.  You could categorize this under "How to repulse your signicant other into dumping/ divorcing you on the spot".  Of course, if she likes this gift, then that's a whole different story...

From a bygone era when you could get away with brilliant little nuggets of broad comedy without the need for self-aware ironic douchebaggery. As a facebook buddy commented after I posted this over there... "Best Buy could never make a commercial this good!!"

Love the new Comercials for Scion Xb. It is saying Drive the Original, Not the copy (http://adland.tv/commercials/scion-xb-splicer-2009-30-usa). I love it. I bought my 08 Xb in Nov '07. The following year and this one I've seen tons of KO versions of it: The Cube by Nissan, Ford Flex, Honda Element, and to an extent the Chevy HHR (rips off the Xb and the PT Cruiser),

Nice to see the original boxy vehicle icon fight back against the imitators.

The HHR was designed by Nesbitt who also designed the Cruiser. I mean you could say he's water treading but he's not really ripping off his own design.

I think perhaps only the Aztek is worse.
Can you believe the exec who green lighted that one got a promotion?
Title: Re: Commercials we LOVE

The Xb is popular....

Or is it the Aztek guy who got a promotion?
Title: Re: Commercials we LOVE
Post by: Tripe on August 21, 2009, 12:56:32 PM
Or is it the Aztek guy who got a promotion?
Yes

Let me explain the logic.

a) I find Scions really ugly
b) The only car I find uglier is the Aztek.
c) It seems that Scions are good sellers.

This led me to
d) People have really bad taste.

Tripe said:
The Aztek guy got a promotion, and then asked if I could believe it.

I said that "Yes, I can believe it, since
a) is popular (and ugly); this led me to
d) People have bad taste, and therefore then
b) is also popular (and uglier).

So yes, I can believe it.
Actually the Aztek was a horrible seller, except in the Detroit market and still the promotion. Why is GM in trouble eh? ::)

That scion is one of the ugliest fucking cars I've ever seen.  I think perhaps only the Aztek is worse.

The only worse one I can think of is the first model of the Honda Element. I refuse to drive any car that looks like an .mp3 player.

Did these engineers fail out of aerodynamics classes or what?

Get used to seeing those, there's more on the way from all sorts of OEMs. And Rattrap is right about that, you can blame the Scion for it.

One new one I love are the Norton Security ones. They are web ads, yet they are hilarious I've seen two. Same concept only different ways of saying the same thing.

Ad 1: FEatures a big green Caterpillar on a plant on one side and a big tough street fighter on the other.

-Narrator- "Imagine this caterpillar is your PC. It is weak and unprotected. Now imagine professional street fighter (forget the name) is a virus. He wants to hurt the caterpillar. The caterpillar responds in typical caterpillar response by eating a leaf. Will you deny (street fighter) access to the caterpillar or will you let him hurt the caterpillar?"
You have the option of selecting Allow or Deny. Depending on your answer you get the following:
-- Allow - Street Fighter prepares to use a weed whacker on the plant the caterpillar is on.
-- Deny - Street Fighter hauls back his arm to punch the caterpillar. Caterpillar raises up and shoots laser beams out of his eyes and slices off the guys arm which falls to the floor. Caterpillar returns to eating a leaf.

The other features Dokken and a uncooked whole chicken.
--Allow - Group stands around the pedestal the chicken is on and give a pelvic thrust at the chicken which explodes ala a flash pot explosion.
-- Deny - Chicken stands up and holds a knife on the group causing them to back off.

God I hope for more of these goofy ads. I love em..

EDIT: FOUND THEM!!

How about that car commercials where the man and the woman are packing a car for some kind of trip... from their third floor apartment?  The guy is throwing stuff out the window and it all bounces perfectly into the back of their hatchback car.  It all looks so genuine, even though those kinds of feats would be impossible in real life.

That would be the new Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback seen here: http://www.youtube.com/v/syrfgDaK72k&hl=en_US&fs=1&

It's only half true. They are dropping things off the balcony onto an angled trampoline, but once they reach the car (that is not really there) the computer takes over and "lands" the objects into the back of the car. A very well done effect. Looks pretty real.

As much as I love Bruce, I have to disagree. Those ads were confusingly abstruse and ultimately too weird (and slow) for their own good. Were they for Old Spice or Bruce Campbell? I like the new ones better.

This makes me laugh, because I think there should be commercials solely for the purpose of advertising Bruce Campbell.

Since I feel I must weigh in on the Old Spice matter, I vote for the Bruce commercials.  I love the guy on the horse stuff, but Bruce in the round room is just classic.  I rarely let a commercial sway my buying choices, but the Bruce commercials almost made me actually want to buy some Old Spice.

OK the Google one makes me misty as it gets close to the end.

Partially related, I love that ad for some phone company or other which shows the aged parents of the 57th president and then scrolls back to them meeting now.

Admittedly, most people meeting now, even those who craftily use their data plan to hook up with that girl on the train who vaguely looked in their direction are not going to spawn a president but it's a nice thing to aim for I suppose. :)

I watch a lot of videos on Blip (mostly various funny movie reviewers). And so what commercials I see tend to be repeated so ad nausium, even the ones I like at first become annoying. But one that still gives me a chuckle every time is the Geico ad about Pinoccio being a bad motivational speaker.
