I didn't like it when I first watched it, but when I revisited it during the summer, I ended up loving the show.  Alec Baldwin is hilarious.

I would like to watch it, I'm just not sure whether Alec Baldwin is any good in it...

Well he is, in fact, he's hilarious.  ;)

I loved the interplay between Seinfeld and Baldwin in this episode, especially all the "Seinfeld Vision" previews.

I love that show, but I cant get myself to watch it regularly, and then I kick myself.

I miss Floyd. He was awesome, plus I just really like Jason Sudakis. The episode was great, all the plots going on, the weight gain, the office wife, Seinfeld Vision, the breakup, everything was really funny and witty as usual.

Alec Baldwin actually is really funny on the show, though I think Tina Fey and (sorry I do not know his name) the guy that plays Kenneth, are the best.

It's great. Admittedly, it got off to a rough start, but now it's starting to hit it's stride.

And Alec Baldwin is probably my favorite thing about this show. So damned funny.

Thursday is officially my favorite TV night(and I think my only tv night). 30 Rock at 8:30, The Office at 9:00, and an hour full of Sunny In Philadelphia at 10:00.

Can't get much better than that.

I remember when this show came out I sat through half an episode of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip waiting for the show to get funny and wondered where the hell Tina Fey was. I do however love 30 Rock so much that I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant.

Very nice indeed. I love Tracy Morgan.

The only bad thing I have to say about 30 Rock(in reference to the 1st season box set) is do not listen to the commentaries. More boring than watching dust collect on a stack of 15-year-old Wall Street Journals.

So I started watching this on Amazon's watch now.

I loved about the first 5-6 episodes; very "Arrested Development."

Then, it turned into Ally McBeal 2, with the episode about the boyfriend, and about babies, and stuff.

Does it get better?

Really? 'cause a lot of people agree that it's the opposite and the show started poorly and gradually got better.  Alec Baldwin is great in the series, though.

Yeah, I loved that.

Personally, I tried watching Arrested Development and I could never get into it at all.  I never laugh out loud like I do with 30 Rock.

Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin are genius together.  Plus the shots at NBC's parent company are beautiful.

I usually don't watch the show. But I caught this one and I liked it. What bothers me most about seeing it is how Alec Baldwin has aged. The difference in how he looks now and how he looked 10 years ago is disheartening. I mean how does somebody's head swell up like that? Does that happen to all Irish men as they get older? I hope not, I'm half Irish myself. Have you ever noticed how swollen his fingers are? It looks like he has the gout or something.

For the life or me, I can't understand why people like The Office. Every gag on that show is like a huge 16 oz. softball lobbed by retired accountant with arthritis. The show has no subtelty whatsoever. It's funny when one of your characters on a show is a clueless moron. It's really redundant when EVERY character on the show is a clueless moron. They should have just called it "Work Place Comedy for Dummies!"

I like them both, but it would be better if they made a show called Rock Office!

Only if it featured rock stars, as themselves, working in an office environment.

There's actually a webcomic with that premise. Of course, now I can't find a link to back that up...

Hilarious.  It does feel a lot like Arrested Development, though it's perhaps even zanier than that show.  The cast, including guest-stars, are fantastic and they've really allowed the periphery characters to develop too.

I can't wait to see the special Oprah episode! *sarcasm* Megan WHO? *sort of sarcasm* Steve Martin, wow, he's famous *sarcasm*

I dunno, you'd think they'd want funny guest stars or something. It's not like, oh we got an Emmy so now we can get good guest stars. It's more like, oh you got an Emmy, please have me on your show. Steve doing a Lorne Michaels show isn't exactly breaking news. And I swear to god, Oprah needs to die. She is a worthless human being. Where's the lightning bolts god is supposed to throw at you when you pretend to be a deity? (I said pretend to be a deity, not pretend to be a-dieting.)

Remember when Earl was all goofy last season, and now this season it's getting back on track? Yeah, 30 Rock is all preparation-H'ed for an off-track season. Like, still funny, but also WTF, OPRAH? The Simpsons has sucked since their first celebrity guest. And that show's not even real. Just say no to guest stars. This isn't Friends, for crying out loud. It's an actual funny sitcom. HELLO.

Having Britney on How I Met Your Mother was unnecessary, but they made it funny and it saved the show from being cancelled.  That's how I look at the Oprah episode.  If any show can make this funny, it's 30 Rock.

Steve Martin will always be awesome, that is all.

The fact that 30 Rock is set around a TV show also lends credibility to the appearance of "random" celebrities.  They even made fun of unnecessary guest-stars with Jerry Seinfeld in everything in the last season.

Steve Martin is awesome, but he's severely tested my opinion on him several times now.  :)

I know Steve Martin... er "is" famous, but he hasn't been liked in years by anyone, except losers like me.

Quote
so it's appropriate that she guest star on it.
That's sort of like if one of the comedians that Michael Scott always talks about on the Office dropped by. "Appropriate" wouldn't really be the word. In this case, since Liz meets Oprah on a plane instead of through her job in the industry... eh. You would think she could just be a guest host on The Girly Show, or whatever the hell it's called.

Quote

I look at it more like Paris Hilton's appearance on My Name Is Earl. And in case you don't know, no it wasn't funny or anything. HOMYM is a typical sitcom, not like 30 Rock and Earl.

Quote
Yes, unlike George Lucas most of the stuff that [Steve] did that I didn't like was forgivable.
Er, I don't agree, and I'll tell you why. Principles. George happened to make some mediocre Star Wars movies, with some great bits, but some lame parts that people won't get over. (But really, get over it!) It's not like he did something totally out of character. Supposedly the original movies weren't that great before rewrites, so it's not like you can blame him for not getting the right person to fix his scripts.

On the other hand, I remember a quote from Steve Martin where he explained why he did Bowfinger (which I like). He said he was doing some stupid movie and he thought to himself, "Why am I doing this? I don't need to be doing this." (I always assumed he was talking about Sgt. Bilko - I hope.) So he stopped doing stupid roles, and sat down to write Bowfinger. Then he started doing stupid roles again, and other than Shopgirl, hasn't really kept up those principles that made him write a new movie (even Shopgirl doesn't really count since they probably would have made it without him). He hasn't done a heck of a lot, period. But that's sort of the point. The less you do, the worse something like Bringing Down The House is.

He's pretty buddy-buddy with Tina Fey (and he was the best part of the movie Baby Mama) so I always assumed he'd eventually guest on the show.   I don't really lump him into the stunt casting like Oprah and Aniston, I see him as more of a friend showing up on his friend's show.  Happens all the time.

I'd also say that My Name is Earl is a pretty typical sit-com, but it looks different because of the single camera set-up.  When they tried the crappily ironic multi-camera pastiche last season, it was awful, and not even in the fun way.
Title: Re: 30 Rock is all new!
Post by: bratpop on November 04, 2008, 12:02:06 AM
Erm, I don't see it as different just because of the camera. It's edgy and gross and has multiple new locations each week, and flashbacks. Sure, they have three standard sets, but most of the action doesn't take place there. Also, it does not feature a fat slob married to a hot chick with several neglected, precocious kids. Okay, neither does HIMYM, but that is at least made the same way as other sitcoms. I'd say lack of a facade living room is enough of a qualifier for Earl.

And Steve being friends with Tina Fey = creepy. I can just imagine him hitting on her all the time, and she's like:
"Friends, Steve. Just friends."
"Right, right. Just friends. I know."
*tries the fake yawn move*
"Steve!"

I've never seen him anywhere else but 30 Rock, but I think he's pretty funny in it.  It was a good episode, not brilliant, but mainly because I didn't really like Oprah in the part - I actually anticipated the reveal at the end - but Tina Fey was great as the doped up superfan ready to spill her heart out.

Anyone see tonight's episode?

Jennifer Aniston's part was solid for a typical sitcom plot.  The part that made this episode great was the "Night Court" story with Tracy and Kenneth and seeing Harry Anderson, Markie Post and Charles Robinson again (and the set!)

For me, the entire Jennifer Aniston subplot fell completely flat.  She was a comedy vacuum that sucked all the funny out of the room whenever she was on screen.

The Night Court subplot saved the episode for me.  Tracy and Kenneth subplots are pretty much always golden.  I'm also thinking that Jenna is becoming my favorite character on the show.

Title: Re: 30 Rock is all new!

I don't like Jenna. Never did. She's a soulless character. She needs some development and something to do. Usually she's just there to be a dumb blonde. I don't find that very interesting. I did like "The Rural Juror" and the confusing Obama with Osama, but that's about it.

Also, this season is very slow to do anything plotwise with Liz.

No one commenting on the new episode? I thought it was perhaps the weakest of the three recent guest-star episodes, though I still thought Steve Martin was pretty great - at least at the begining he was - and some of the stuff with Tracy was funny, too.  Too many misses for me this week though.

I understand their reasoning for the big celebrity guests but it's starting to feel like Will & Grace.  That is not a good thing.  They need to actually show some skits from their fake show.  Those were always fun.

They're not good enough to write skits, that's why they never show them.

It's like they think of a funny title for a Tracy Jordan movie and then they're all like whew we're spent turn out the lights last guy out.

I think showing a skit from the fictional show would be missing the point.  It's about what goes on behind the scenes, and it's even moving away from that concept.

Also, I loved the two versions of Liz and her Telescope.

About 2 months ago, I found out that the guy who plays Toofer was in my high school.  He graduated, I think, 2 years ahead of me, and we didn't know each other.  Still, I watch the show with a whole new point of view knowing that.

I think what I remember most about him was his incredibly hammy overacting in plays portraying Henry David Thoreau and Harrison Bergeron.  ESPECIALLY Harrison Bergeron.  Keith was just terrible in that.

Concurred on both counts.  For The Office, the Hilary Swank thing was an okay idea in theory and if it had been the cold open, it maybe would have been fine, but not as the entire B story.

She was only as bad at impressions as Jenna is at improv. And she was trying to bamboozle them, not entertain them. Then she was trying to distract them.

Why was Jude's story not finished? It just petered out and went nowhere.

I missed the end-end (I left when they started singing) so I dunno if that got better. I think if I'd known who any of the singers were (I didn't even recognize Sheryl Crow until Jack introduced her) it might have been funnier.

From what I remember, there was Michael McDonald, Cyndi, Sheryl Crow, Moby, two of the Beastie Boys, Mary J. Blige, Adam Levine from Maroon 5, Sara Barreiles, Clay Aiken, Elvis Costello... and other people that I can't remember.

I didn't, but I had watched that episode with my parents, and they loved it.  Then I watched it again on the DVD, and with the commentary or one of the special features, Tina Fey was kinda congratulating herself on working that in.  My curiousity was piqued, so I had to look it up.  I'd love to see the source material on MASH though.  Was that something Alan Alda's character said on MASH, or something he said in reference to MASH?  I can't understand how the former would make sense.

It was in reference to it.  You know the story of the last ep, right? He made a woman smother her crying child to keep it quiet, and then went crazy and mis-remembered it as a chicken?

Yeah, that's what I read.  When and where did Alda actually utter the line though?

He wasn't quoting Hawkeye. He was just referring to that situation--it was after Liz's photo shoot with the chicken, I think, when he's wandering around on the floor.

I know he wasn't quoting Hawkeye.  He was, on 30 Rock, referring to Tracy's crying about having been forced to murder someone named "Baby", but how actually the story was that Tracy was supposed to disect a frog, but couldn't, because he was "chicken".  The exact words were "There was no baby.  I was a chicken!"

But what did Alda originally say?  And when?

It was a paraphrase of Roy Batty's dying speech - "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe..."

I cant find her quote online yet--but I'm almost positive it's a riff.  Where Batty says "Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion" etc., she says girl/mall related stuff.
Haha.  Thanks.  I love that show.  Seeing Tracy Morgan again always thrills me.  They know how to use just enough of him without overexposing him (and I can see other tv shows would totally do that).

Just saw this little news item:

From Extra:

Quote
Just last week Steve Carell  announced he was leaving "The Office" after next season, and now Alec Baldwin says he won't be returning to "30 Rock" once his contract expires in 2012.

"As much as I like acting, I know that I would love to have a different life, a private life. I think doing this now for a living has become really hard. It's really hard," Baldwin told CNN during an interview.

He added, "I would rather go do other things and have whatever amount of time I have left in my life, have more of a normal life... I want to find out if it's possible. How close can I get."

Perhaps it's just contract negotiation time... or perhaps Baldwin really does want to do other things!

I feel this is actually good news.  Perhaps if Baldwin quits, the show will finish before it outstays its welcome, unlike some other shows we know of.

Of course, if they were to replace him, the ONLY person they could get is Will Arnett.

Heh.  I do the same thing.  Though I don't wait as long as you do.  I get the DVDs as soon as they come out.  I just finished watching season 4 a few days ago.

Still, if they're doing a live show, I think I'll watch it.

I regret it later if I do a first-day purchase. I almost always end up saving about 50% of the cost of the show if I just wait.
That's how I feel about all dvds I buy.  Just wait a year and you can usually get it for $5 (that includes shipping) in Amazon's used section.

As for the live ep(s), I'll prob be working Thurs night and will hafta watch 'em online the next day like I do every ep.  If I'm not working then tho, I'll prob find a way to see it.

Just watched the both East Coast and West Coast versions of the show.  If you only see one, I say watch the West Coast version.  It has a couple better rewritten lines and a couple minor, unplanned gaffs.  Also, there's this neat list of the 17 Differences (http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/10/the_17_differences_between_30.html#comments) between each version.  Pretty cool.

Did I like the ep?  It was much better the 2nd time once I fully understand what they were trying to do.  But the SNL atmosphere was very surreal and reminded me why 30 Rock (and most other sitcoms) work so well without a laugh track.  Took some getting used to, but, for the most part, I'd say enjoyable (esp for a couple surprises here and there).

Just finishing up 5th season (1 ep left)--and holy SHIT they got Condoleeza Rice to play herself as Jack's old flame!

And then all the Kim Jong Il stuff in this ep is so great.  They have to bring Avery back since she married Un.  And the little end-credits sequence with the glengarry/glen ross thing was brilliant.

God damn I love this show.

I just saw that episode and felt the same way. I LOVE the way they got rid of Avery. I thought it was very unique. I knew they had to get rid of her character because she is played by Elizabeth Banks and because Jack should remain single...but HOW they did it. Super awesome.

When Alec Baldwin called it "Rainstorm Katrina" (not sure what episode) I decided that was my favorite thing of ever. And as a woman, I adore Tina Fey

Now this show should be coming back soon because it is mid-seasonly replacing Community. This show is my 3rd favorite of right now

Is bittorrent a specific site?
No.  It's basically a protocol used for peer to peer filesharing.  You run Bit Torrents through .torrent files that are downloaded with a Bit Torrent client.  It basically lets you download files from other peoples' computers bit by bit.  So instead of getting, say, all of Transformers from one website, you can bits and pieces from a lot of people.  Kind of like a torrent of data bits.

If you are on a private tracker or use proper peer blocking bittorrent is less risky but yes, I won't be torrenting anything copyrighted in the future.

Have you considered IRC for downloading shows?
Title: Re: 30 Rock is all new!
Post by: D.B. Barnes on January 17, 2012, 05:22:55 PM
I don't even know what that is.

It's the Internet Relay Chat protocol. Essentially, you install a client, connect to a channel, and download files. It's fast, reliable, and I've never heard of anyone being tracked on it. It's an excellent alternative to torrents, especially when it comes to TV shows.

If you're interested, google "mirc" to find out more about a good IRC client. The link gets flagged as spam.
