Title: Top DVDs you most want to see released
Post by: mrbakasan on October 21, 2006, 05:23:25 PM
Given the tens of thousands of DVDs that have been released I'm interested if there are movies people want on DVD that haven't been released.  Here are my top 4.

1.  Wizards of the Lost Kingdom (a Bo Svenson fantasy movie from the 80's)
2.  Yor (I've never seen this movie, but I've heard its hilarious)
3.  Sammy's Super T-Shirt (This is a movie that I saw went I was about 4 or 5 years old and it is probably the first movie I ever remember watching.  Its about a kid who has a t-shirt with a tiger on it and it gives him superpowers.  I don't know a single other person who has ever even heard of this movie, so I doubt it will ever get released on DVD, but you never know.  I know that its from the UK though, so maybe some of you guys from the UK have heard of it.)
4.  Tough Guys (starring Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster)

I don't want anyone to think that because of the bizarro top three that I listed that I'm expecting people to list only really obscure movies.  And if this is a duplicate of another thread, just let me know and I'll move my post there.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie  (rereleased so I don't have to buy one on ebay for $100 or buy a crappy bootleg one)

Maybe Rhino will release it or Anchor Bay, they tend distribute some interesting movies.  I don't remember what studio released it at theaters though.

Hamlet, directed by Kenneth Branagh.  I think they are working on it, but hurry up already.  It was shot on 70mm film, vhs doesn't do it any justice.  70mm on vhs is like a thumbnail of the Sistine chapel.  Hamlet is up there as one of my favorite films but I can't watch it because I no longer have a working vcr.

It's worth that much? Woo-hoo!  ;D

I would like a few classic films to be released:

Once Upon a Honeymoon, with Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers.
The Lady Killer, with James Cagney.
Five Graves to Cairo, directed by Billy Wilder.

And I know it's coming but...

Blade Runner: Special Edition.

Blade Runner: Special Edition.

Have you seen a release date for it?  I'm all about some Blade Runner, even though I think I've fallen asleep during it the past couple of times I've tried to watch it.

According to Empire magazine, the new remastered version that's just come out is only on sale for a few months before the special edition arrives in the spring.

I'm not sure of any movies I'd like to see released on DVD.  But there are plenty of TV shows and specials that I would grab on DVD if ever released.

Batman (tied up in studio limbo - Fox owns the show, but Warner owns the character)

WKRP in Cincinatti (music rights issues have kept this one from being released)

Any early Comedy Channel shows (Sweet Life with Rachel Sweet, Higgins Boys and Gruber, Night After Night with Allan Havey) (big longshot that we will ever see these shows on DVD)

Star Wars Holiday Special (I already have an old bootleg of this, but this should be released with all kinds of special features and whatnot.)

Gemini Man (not holding out much hope for this one either, although they have shown some of these episodes on Sci-Fi Channel in the past. Maybe if Universal ever does a 70's Sci-Fi themed series of DVD releases, this one could come out)

They already announced one of my all-time wants - Saturday Night Live Season 1 will be out in November (with other seasons to follow hopefully).  And I picked up another off my wishlist earlier this year - Just Say Julie volume 1.  So maybe there is hope on the others.

I would think that Rhino or Anchor Bay would have the same problem that Rhino has with all the other MST3K releases.  They would not only have to license the movie itself, but also This Island Earth, from Universal.

My personal wish for this is for a 2 disc Criterion release with outtakes, deleted scenes, behind the scenes, a retrospective documentary about MST3K, and two commentaries - one from Mike, Kevin, and Trace in character done over the host segments, and another from as many MST3K alumni as they can get to discuss the making of the film and the writing process.

I think the only place you can get series two of Twin Peaks is from Spain, oddly enough.

I know, on vhs. I have those (Ta very much, Ebay) but it'd be easier if it was put on small little discs. On one side I hear that the reason for the delay is legal issues and the other I hear David Lynch wants to perfect the transfer, sound and extras. That might be true because Season one was a beautiful transfer.

I had been waiting for this for a long time, and they finally released it a couple weeks ago:

I'm still waiting for Safe Men (link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120813/)).  It's got Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Paul Giamatti...it's a hilarious movie, but it only exists on VHS at the moment.

Not the uncut version. There is a rumor that Joy Sales in Hong Kong will have it out but nothing concrete.

I'd really like to see Dvd boxes of the series:

Twin Peaks season 2

They are working on them. After the first set came out the rights were expiring for that company so since they wouldn't have the rights for very long they didn't bother with season 2.  Paramount has been threatening to get these out so it is a matter of when.

Movie-wise it's got to be "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie"! I've heard that Universal had absolutely no interest in re-releasing it though since it was such a huge bomb. Here's hoping Rhino will pick up the slack...

My biggest DVD want however has got to be "Family Ties" (as in the TV show). If you can get ALF and Saved By the Bell on DVD you should be able to get one of the bes sitcoms of the 80's on DVD.

I would love to have MST3K:TM rereleased on DVD with the full treatment: deleted scenes, or even better, a full director's cut with all the scenes Universal made them cut out restored into the movie proper, a "Making Of" featurettes or at least some kind of retrospective with the cast and crew, and I know it would be ridiculous to have a commentary track, but dammit, I want one anyway!  If nothing else, it would be cool if they had a text commentary, like they have on the Star Trek movie DVD's.  And of course the original unMisted version of This Island Earth.

Other DVD's I would like to see: Tiny Toon Adventures, Freakazoid, Histeria!, basically all the Spielberg-produced Warner Bros. cartoons that aren't already out on DVD.  I mean, maybe Animaniacs is better than Tiny Toons, but Tiny Toons is the show that launched the careers of some of the top animation talent in the industry today, so that's gotta count for something.

Any MST3K that has yet to be released on DVD needs to be released.

Also, the Norm Show (Or as I like to call it: Dirty Work: The Series.)

Andy Richter Controls The Universe

The Dana Carvey Show

and The Downer Channel.  (An extremely short-lived sketch comedy series on NBC produced by Steve Martin.  It had promise, and might have survived an entire season or more on HBO or Comedy Central.)

I'd also like to see the second season of Twin Peaks on DVD.

Might as well re-release the first season while you're at it (including the pilot). And an edition of Lost Highway that isn't pan-and-scan.

Well the obvious choice here is Howard the Duck!

Yes, but only so Mike (and Kevin or Bill, or all three) can make fun it. If Universal ever releases this thing on DVD, it would be a sin not to do a RiffTrax for it.

Ditto on this one. I'm also anxiously awaiting the second season of the Muppet Show.

As for movies, I'd like to see Welles' Chimes at Midnight, that one he was working on when he died, and a more getable version of Magnificent Ambersons. Also that Wilder one about the kid in the well. And David Byrne's True Stories BADLY needs a re-release; the current one is friggin' full frame.

Watching the first season of the Muppet Show made me realize what great puppeteers Jim Henson & Co. really were/are.  Especially Jim and Frank Oz.  Put the two of them in a room together, and the comedy just happens.  They were truly the Trace Beaulieu and Frank Conniff of their time.

I would like to see the second season of Jon Favreau's Dinner For Five.  Season 1 came out like 3 years ago, but no word on the next season...It's a good show, and for those of us that don't get IFC, DVD is the only way to see it.  I know there's at least 5 seasons of this show.

Indeed, I would love for them to send out a special edition with a clear copy of the deleted scenes, any stills they have, a commentary or two with EVERYONE, a pine scented SOL air freshener, anything and everything Movie related. But, alas, I think its not going to happen.  :'(

And even if it did, the cost to Rhino would be passes on to us, making it prohibitively expensive for all but us hardcore MSTies, not unlike the Freaks & Geeks DVDs, where they had to pay through the nose for all the music used in the series. Worth every penny, though.

I'm still waiting for Seasons 1 & 2 of Sifl & Olly to be released by GiantEvilCo (MTV/Viacom), and I'd love to have all the seasons of Let's Bowl released as a nice set, including the cable access episodes... I know, I know, there's the DAP (I know, I know, because I helped assemble the episodes for it), but it would be great if when Comedy Central kills off a perfectly perfect show they'd give us a DVD of it, instead of looking for new ways to merchandise the flipping unfunny as hell The Man Show. I really don't understand this tendency for DVD companies to release the first season of a show and wait years (if ever) to release the consecutive seasons.  Its frustrating to say the least.

It is frustrating but think about it from their perspective. If the first season didn't sell well, why should they put more seasons out? When talking about older shows, a lot of people aren't going to run out and buy them. It's a niche market with some of the little known shows and it just doesn't make sense for them to keep making season sets when they aren't getting a return on thier investment.

Absolutely!

What I would like Rhino to do is if they do eventually manage to release enough of a season of MST3K, you'd be able to buy a special complete season box to put all the seperate discs in.

In another light, it doesn't make sense, because very often the first season isn't as good as the rest of the seasons.  Look at the Simpsons.  Most of the episodes in the first season just are not funny at all.  The only decent episode is "Bart The General".  And even that isn't anywhere near as good as some of the later episodes.

I'm still waiting for a really nice DVD for "Monster Squad" the 80's cult classic. Wolfman nards, awesome music, and strangely creepy/violent scenes... oh the memories

Yes, but that's your opinion. Someone else may find that season the best. Plus, studios have no way of knowing that you didn't buy it because it was the weakest season and intend to buy the others. All they are looking at is the ratio of how much they spent to produce it and how much return they got back on that investment.

The Giant Claw is one definitely one of the ONLY giant killer bird movies. I'd love to see it on DVD and also the original version of Mothra.

And a US release of the anime flick "Mind Game".

Never heard of that third one, but I would LOVE to see either of the first two on DVD.

On a related note, I'd like to know who the hell thought that it would be a good idea to use that flamingo-buzzard puppet for the scenes with the GIANT ANTIMATTER SPACE BUZZARD!!!  Hehehehehehehehe!!!!!!!!!!!  (I just love saying those words (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/giantclaw)).

The person responsible for that puppet should be given a medal for bravery...and then sentenced to death by firing squad.

Great choice. In keeping with that genre, I'd like to see a dVD release of Michael Mann's The Keep and also a release of Night of The Creeps with the great Tom Atkins.

Just remembered a big one I would love to see released:

Get Crazy

Malcom McDowell and Daniel Stern. It involves a New Years Eve Party/Concert. Think Cheech and Chong meets The Blues Brothers meets Airplane meets The Song Remains the Same.

It gets MEGA bonus points for having somewhere between a cameo and a large part for Lou Reed!

Not for the kids, but not over obscene either. Although maybe I should back track on that a bit because it does have a scene with a stoned dude having an extended conversation with his johnson.

Anyone else see this one and can back me up? Can I get an amen?

Warner Bros. has said that they are considering putting that out on dvd. They already got Animaniacs and Pinky & the Brain. so im sure they would eventually put that out if sells go well with the other two.

for news and stuff on tv shows comming to dvd check out www.tvshowsondvd.com i check it everyday. they are pretty reliable on their information and you can put on there what shows you are wanting to come out and they keep records of what has been released and things like that.

Liam's doing podcasts now (13 so far) where Sifl & Olly make cameos, and even after all these years, they still make me laugh out loud. check out www.lynchland.com for loads of info and free stuff. I'm hoping the DVDs see the light of day, because my VHS tapes have seen much better days. There's something timeless about the sillyness of that show, and it seems to hold up well :) Even without chemical assistance ;)

That would nice, as I've never seen the theatrical release, and would like to compare them. Hopefully it's a bells & whistles fancy edition with both versions and mucho bonus crap.

Spaced (Yeah, it's out in the UK< but I want a NA version.)

Fletch (which has slipped back out of production again.)

Amazing Grace & Chuck (Not out of any particular fondness for the film, but I want to annoy some people with it.)

But mostly, I'd like to see 1984's "Up the Creek" on DVD. Tim Matheson. Stephen Furst. Mike the Dog. And a theme song utterly hated by Cheap Trick. I've got a VHS copy that I bought from a video store, but I'd like something cleaner. (And a copy less than 20 years old as well.)

Me too. I wonder how they determine what British TV series get Region 1 releases? You'd think a show from the stars of a big hit movie would be an easy sell.

Y'know, BBQ, if you enjoy The Giant Claw, the IMDb also recommends Future War. The IMDb is retarded.

I saw bits of a movie once, in black & white I think, with a giant lizard or somesuch in Rome. I believe it attacked the Colosseum. Does this ring any bells?
