I have yet to even try to go online with my Ps3. I have been meaning to play around with it and see how it is. The one guy i would be interested in playing online (Virtua Fighter 5) doesn't support online play  ???.

the Xbox 360 is getting online virtua fighter 5, i can only assume that ps3 wont.  there was a rumor that a patch would make it online.  Ive yet to see any proof of that.  Ive also failed to see any denial.

However im still enjoying my ps3 online.

I'm pretty jealous of ps3 owners right now ... my 360 is cool but all of my favorite games are incredibly frustrating under their 360 control schemes ...aside from Halo 3 and racing games I'm having a hard time with the 360 controller

Games that I have purchased but have disappointed me:
NBA2K8 , Tony Hawk, Tiger Woods, Fighting Games

The way I see it I have 5 months to save up for a ps3 ... GTA  works well with the playstation control scheme, so as long as I can save up 500 dollars (of disposable income) by April.

The first game that i have played where i was dissapointed with the 360 controller is Skate.  I like the controller a lot, might just be because im used to the original Xbox controller, but with Skate it is a really nice system to add the physics element into, but it was just too hard of a learning curve to get all of the tricks down using the right thumbstick.

For me it is basically a blu-ray player. That is the only reason why I got it, and I got it used from work so it was cheap. Resistance is ok but I am not a big FPS fan. I like third-person better. I am waiting for Metal Gear Solid. That should be good. Also the PS3 uses a shit ton of hard drive space for some games. I can't remember which game it was but one game needed 3 gb of free HD space. And unlike the 360 you can't add a bigger hard drive.

I'm CireDark on PSN (PlayStation Network) as well. I'm pretty much CireDark everywhere online.
Also, I was one of those poor bastards that paid *a little* over $1000 shortly after the initial Launch Date, only to get one that barely works. (Lots of Freezing, Crashing, Video Distortion)
On the Days that it works, I can be found playing MKII Online. (Yes, I bought a next gen system to play 2d Fighters, so sure me)
Also, "Manos: Hands of Fate" is saved on the PS3 Hard Drive at all times and Looks terrific in 720p and 1080p.

Will do! Also, Street Fighter II HD will be available soon, and will be playable online.
Can't wait for that...
Now all we need is Guilty Gear Online and King of Fighters: Maximum Impact Online.

I picked up a 60 GB PS3 today.  Best Buy had been doing a deal where you could get Lair, Heavenly Sword, or a 2nd controller free if you bought the 60 GB until 11/19.  They recently took the deal off of their website and also took down the signs in the stores.  But if you ask about it you should still get it.  It's only good til they are all gone.

I got the last one and grabbed Heavenly Sword.  I know it's only gonna take about 5 hours to beat (according to several people at work), but it looks fun.

I probably won't get it up online for awhile since I'm rocking Guitar Hero on the Wii right now.

I haven't fired up my PS3 in a while, and probably won't until after the new year. I'm still holding out for Street Fighter II HD. Once that's available, any of you are more than welcome to go head to head with me.

I'm JoshWay on the PSN. I rarely play online, but you'll see me in a Resistance deathmatch here and there.

Lately I'm enjoying Ratchet and Clank, Folklore, and Lego Star Wars.

Similar to MrTorso's, my PS3 acts mainly as a BluRay player.

By sacrificing roughly half of my birthday and half of Christmas, in addition to fronting $200 of my own money, I now have a PS3. However, I won't be touching it for another week or so due to holiday travel and the fact that I don't technically own all of it until the 25th. Sony should thank me for my loyalty even if it did take me two years to show it.

After getting my roommate an HDMI cable and hooking my surround system up to his PS3 through an optical cable I have to say I'm very impressed with it. I'm thinking about trying to find a 60GB PS3 for myself. It looks spectacular at 1080p on a 50 inch HDTV. Creeped myself out by playing Silent Hill (the movie) while hooking up the surround sound and then played a few 5.1 surround sound albums I have, very impressive machine. I also got my roommate Time Crisis 4 for the holidays, what a disappointing game.

If Rifftrax On Demand worked on the PS3, that'd be freaking sweet.  Of course a Rifftrax player on the PS3 would be sweeter.  (I'd be ok with it on a Mac as well.)

Folklore is very unique and beautiful. I really enjoy it. I'm a very "casual" gamer, so the RPG elements are a bit too much for me (like keeping track of the folk, endless repetitive battles, etc.), but it's a gorgeous game. I did download the extra content, but I haven't delved in yet. I'm presently being held captive by the Orange Box.

I should check the non-RiffTrax forums more often. Maybe it wouldn't take me three weeks to answer a simple question!

I still don't have a ps3 yet, but still want one.

I've put it off this long, I might as well wait until late April (Grand Theft Auto IV). I'd still like to see another price cut, rumble support, but if neither happens I'll still purchase. I'm curious about the Gran Turismo Prologue game that recently came out, has anyone here played it yet?

Rumble support will happen.  (Or has.)

Not sure on another price cut.  They just discontinued the 80 GB version.  It'll probably happen eventually though.

A decision has been made.  I'm buying a PS3 this weekend.  My PS2 has completely stopped working, and I consider it a sign from above that this is simultaneously happening just as GTA IV is coming out, and George Bush is tossing $600 in my lap.

A couple questions for you guys.

I'll probably need a headset for online play...are there any that you would recommend?  Or any to stay away from?

Will my PS2 controllers work with the PS3?

Are there any other peripherals that I should get right away?  Just so I don't have to make two trips to the store.

Thanks everyone.

well first ENSURE the one you buy from the store is backwards compatable.  thats the first thing.  they arent all at this point.  youll want the 60 gig i think is the model.  if you plan on playing a decent amount ps2 games on it you might want a memory card adaptor so you can transfer all your files onto the hard drive (the ps3 has no memory card slots)  your ps2 controllers WILL work if you have an adaptor but they are unnessicary for the most part because the ps3 controllers work for both ps2 and ps3 (and ps) games.  those are my recomendations.
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3
Post by: SmilinJackRoss on April 17, 2008, 07:24:37 AM
Well, they don't sell the 60 gig models new anymore, and I'm not about to buy a used game system.  I have no way of knowing if a cat peed on it or it was dropped or otherwise abused.  And since I don't have a ton of cash to throw at it, I'm just going with the 40 gig model, which I know isn't backwards compatible, but I don't really plan on playing any PS2 games, so it's not an issue for me.

Yeah, FF XII.

Seriously, the only real RPG out for the PS3 is Oblivion and chances are pretty good that you may have already played that on the 360 or PC. After that? The next release is basically Fallout 3, which isn't until September.

I think I'm gonna buy Burnout: Paradise along with the system.  It's got pretty good reviews, and I was totally addicted to Burnout 3: Takedown a couple years ago.

Of course, on April 29th this game will go on the shelf immediately....  :)

I'm waiting for the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle, but I have a question. I was messing with my friend's 80 gig to see what video files would play. I was able to play both the Coffee Shop and Terrible Truth DivX shorts. But That was out of several shorts including Act Your Age, Lunchroom Manners, Cathy/Petaluma, and A Visit to Santa. Is there a reason why the PS3 would only play those two?

Well, I seem to have PS3 Ownership now, and I'm wondering which games I should dive into. I'm not big on shooters, and I love me some strategy and RPGs. Also, I've had an Xbox 360 for a couple years, so I have most of the must-haves that the two have shared. Any reccomendations?

Also, what games are good for download? Lot of cool looking games, but it's hard to tell which ones are worth the 5-20 bucks.
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3

Hmm..these are my favorite PS3 games:

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Mirror's Edge

MGS4 is the closest to an RPG whereas Uncharted is a third person adventure game (think Tomb Raider but better) and Mirror's Edge has aspects of a shooter game but you don't use guns that much. I'd recommend MGS4 the highest followed by Uncharted. As for downloadable games, I haven't heard or read up on that much about Lumines Supernova but I loved the original so much for the PSP. It's a puzzle game. Not sure how it is on the PS3 though.

EDIT - Looks like that Lumines game got an 8.5 on IGN. I think it's only $15 or so. I might have to pick that up myself.

Well, I can help with the strategy and RPG stuff, as that's pretty much all that I own on the PS3. For that look into:
Valkyria Chronicles - A squad strategy game set in a pseudo WWII setting.

Disgaea 3-  A SRPG set in a school in the Netherworld.

Valkyria has gotten very good reviews. Disgaea mostly was criticized for being not much of an improvement over the PS2 version and more of the same, but the same is a pretty high mark.

And that's really it at the moment. White Knight Chronicles will come out... sometime. (And the Japanese reviews are lukewarm.) FFXIII is multiplatform now. Same with Oblivion and Fallout . Untold Legends is a action RPG, but it's also a horrible game.

For download, I've picked up Pain (Which is okay) Wild Arrms and Suikoden. The latter are PS1 RPGs that I can play on my PSP, so I don't really recommend playing them on the PS3. I also own Everyday Shooter, which is kinda fun. And I've heard a number of people praise the Pixel Junk games. However, you're probably better off sticking to the XBL stuff for download.

Aside from that, the usual praised PS3 games are Uncharted, Metal Gear Cutscene, er, Solid. And Singstar if you're in Europe.

I'm not big into RPGs, so my advice is a bit limited, but I've heard that the new Valkyria Chronicles is a pretty good RPG.

If you like platformers, LittleBigPlanet is tons of fun, especially if you can get a hold of a couple more controllers and play multiplayer with friends.  But if not, you can play online too.  Even if you don't touch the level editor or online parts, the story mode still makes the game worth grabbing.

I also liked Uncharted, but only if you're into action adventure games.  It's pretty short, so maybe just a rental, but it's a fun game.

I adore PixelJunk Eden, but I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone.  I believe there is a demo for it though, so you can check it out for free.

Mine is down below.

I've been playing some Disgaea 3 and enjoying it, even though when you make a new character, they start at level 1.  A pain when a better class comes along.

As that implies, you will only find me in football games about 90% of the time.

My user name on PSN is nrrork, just like here.

I don't really get on there much, though. The problem is almost all of my friends are 360 owners. Which means-- in addition to taking my share of ball-busting from the more fanboyish of them-- I don't really know anyone on PSN. I like my PS3 very much, but not being able to play games with my friends online is about my one regret for picking it over the 360. Also, my wallet cried a little. ^_^

Same deal with me, I haven't even played any games online with people I know, not even from the internet, on my PS3. The only people I know that actually own one are my aunt and uncle, but they don't have any of the games I do.  However, two of my friends have been asking me if they should buy one. I told them to wait for E3 to be over with.
If anyone on here would like to play so Resistance 1, Resistance 2, Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament 3, or Little Big Planet, feel free to add me.

I need to spring for more games that other people own.  Everything I've got is either single player or nobody else has apparently got it.

Though prove me wrong if anyone has these: GTA IV, RE 5, MK vs. DC (already mentioned), and several other abbreviations.  Oh, and Lego Star Wars.

Actually, if there's any online stuff that's good, I'll try it out.  The only thing I've downloaded so far is Mega Man 9, so if there's recommendations, I'll try 'em.  I will not do Rock Band, though...I'm okay on Easy at the store, but suck above that, and all I'd end up accomplishing is screwing people out of trophies or song unlocks.  Plus, I no longer have space for peripherals larger than my head, so all the various guitar-type games are right out.

My internet gets hooked back up tomorrow (friday), and assuming that goes smoothly, I'll be online virtually every night.  For the near future, I'm going to be playing Red Faction Guerrilla a lot.  But I also plan on buying Bomberman Ultra when that comes out next week, and Zombie Apocalypse, which is also due out this month sometime.  Both are PSN download games, and both will have online game modes.

I'm a fan of of it.  It's great to pull out when you have friends/family over, especially if they aren't typically gamers.  Most of the people I've shown the game to end up really liking it.  I have purchased most of the question packs too...all told, I've spent ~$100 on this game!  I just wish they had customizable characters, seems like it should have been a no-brainer for a game like this.

Didn't even see this.  Sure, I'd be up for it.  Though I may occasionally dive for a trophy if I see a chance.  I'm a sucker for 100% completion; after playing MGS2 on all the difficulties just to get all the dog tags, you would've thought I'd stop doing things like that, but I can't help it (which means I'm screwed for MK vs. DC; anybody who says they've completed the Kombo Challenges is either some sort of god or lying).

WTF? Hulu no longer works on my PS3!

Hulu blocked the PS3 browser's access to their site. Apparently they decided that the playstation was "hacking" their site and accessing it without showing ads, or something. You can verify this by putting the PS3 browser-ID into your PC - bingo, your PC is now blocked from Hulu as well.

Here's the cryptic reply from hulu as to why they're blocking the PS3 browser:

Quote
G4 received a response from Hulu that might leave one more bewildered about the change than not having read it. Hulu calls the change a "tough decision," one that it would "do so when we believe it improves our long-term prospects to build a more enduring, legal solution to that same problem." Clear?

Probably not. But Hulu's response also touches on "the windowing strategy [that] is still dominant in the business." What they mean by that, we think, is the availability of content at theaters or on television, and when that content is made available on DVD, Blu-ray and via digital distribution. And how the entertainment industry kind of likes that model. And that things like the PS3 are messing with their model. And that somebody holding the rights to that content doesn't like that.

So, if anybody wants to get together for a game of...well, any kind (assuming Ghostbusters here), what would be the best way to contact?  I tried putting out an open call for a game a few weeks ago using the message center on the PS3, but by the time it was over I noticed nobody on my 'Friends' list had even signed in to be able to read it (I did get somebody, but I was able to talk to them on the phone), let alone know if anyone was interested in gaming anyway.  I don't want to necessarily be sending private messages to everybody, but maybe an open call on the thread here might work.  Of course, probably giving a little more notice than a couple of hours would probably help, too... :)

I kept getting those messages days after they happened. Also, I went on vacation last week so I wasn't even in state.
Open calls in this thread (or perhaps the general Ghostbusters one, though you might get some guff from the people on Xbox) are probably the best method. It worked very well for Mario Kart Wii back when that was the big new thing.

Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3
Post by: SJP on July 24, 2009, 04:08:38 PM
No problem...online's pretty easy to get into for the most part.  The only part I don't like is that you have to add friends separately in online mode from PS3 friends.  Don't know why...it's not like online mode connects all the different consoles together...or does it?   ???  Plus, I've never gotten the 'Invite' mode to work properly...a buddy of mine who has the game has had to locate me once I started a game via the 'Friends' menu before too many people joined up, which isn't that efficient.  Anybody get this to work the way it's supposed to?

How many have headsets, by the way?  I picked one up a week ago to keep my sanity in Resident Evil 5 multiplayer (which has worked, for the most part), but if you have one, it only works in the game startup screen and the game itself...not outside.  That's important, because once a Instant Action or Campaign Mode ends, it boots everybody back out to the online menu and all conversation stops dead.  So be prepared to be cut off once it's over and know who's starting the next game.

Oh, and that same buddy of mine who doesn't visit the forums is going to try and make it, too, so we should have enough for a big game (or maybe two games, if we get more than four).  He's got a headset as well.

That time should work for me. I've yet to pick up a headset though, all the stores around here stopped selling them for some reason.

Well, I think the session went pretty well.  If anybody's ever up for it ever again (or want to suggest a game other than Ghostbusters), I'm up for it.

That time should work for me. I've yet to pick up a headset though, all the stores around here stopped selling them for some reason.

Hope somebody near you carries one soon, and at a decent price.  I know I was dead-set against them for a long time, but they really help a lot when hosting; I've noticed a lot of people that join games like to do the "I'm flashing the ready bar because I want you to start the game immediately, even though the game room isn't full, and if you don't bow to my whims in the next 10 seconds, I will take my business elsewhere," and if I can't tell them I'm waiting for more people, they just up and go.

Plus, I think it helps reduce a lot of tension online, as well.  I know a couple of times in RE5 (yes, I'm sure everyone's tired of hearing this by now, but this is the LAST time), I was surrounded by zombies that I was trying to take out with a melee attack.  Trouble was, there was another player nearby who kept getting the crap beat out of him, and the game kept "auto-targeting" the dying player instead of the nearest zombie.  I didn't have a headset at the time, and after that the guy wanted to do nothing more than beat the crap out of me.  Purely an accident, but there was no way for me to tell him, and nobody left happy that day.

Of course, it also helps weed out the idiots.  Some doofus in another game had one and reveled loudly after every kill.  Then, when he was getting targeted, he would complain that everyone was "picking on the helpless guy" (helpless being a strange term to use by the guy who is 30,000 points ahead of everybody else, by the way).  I unfortunately wasn't hosting that game, and it was only a matter of time before the host, who also didn't have a headset, got fed up and booted that guy...and everybody else.  I don't blame him...a lot of people wouldn't have put up with that guy for as long as he did.

I don't have many games that support online really.  But I'd definitely be up for playing some Rock Band or Buzz Quiz TV sometime.  (As soon as I can get the damn wireless working in my house again.  It keeps kicking itself over to Local only.)

I've also got Rainbow 6 Vegas (first one) that I haven't played yet, and I'm not sure if that has online or not.  Haven't really looked.  And I'm pretty bad at FPS type games.  But I'll DEFINITELY be up for some Uncharted 2 online when that comes out.

Yeah, that was fun ghost bustin' this morning SJP.  I had to get off my ass and mow the lawn...I've been working outside all day since then!  I'm definitely down for some more online action soon.  I'm on almost every night after 9:30 CST.

As far as other online games go, you should definitely check out Battlefield 1943.  It's a downloadable game on the PSN, it's only $15, and it's awesome.  Even though the chat is totally broken, it's still a lot of fun.  It's basically a FPS, but you can also drive tanks, jeeps, fly planes and get into dog fights.  It's online only, there's no single player campaign. I believe it has a free demo, so you should check it out:

Oh, and k1, I'm always down for some Buzz Quiz action!

Where?  I've been trying to find it cheap because I want more buzzers.  If you see me online, send me a message/invite, I'll play.  I want to get the Platinum for it someday, but the "50 online wins" trophy will take awhile.  I have ~24 wins, so I'm only halfway there after owning the thing since last October.

Ghostbusters has Co-op. Along with LittleBigPlanet.
Both good choices.

I'm still missing a bunch of the LBP trophies that you need 4 players for.  (Main reason being I can never get 3 other friends online at the same time!)

Well, if you can find two other people, and the trophies aren't that hard to get (I'm out of practice) I can help you out with that. I promise I won't start slapping the other players at the most critical moments.

I think I'm missing "Play a game with 3 friends" and "win a 4 player game".  There's a few others I'm missing, but it's mainly the ones where you need to ace the levels which I'm never going to be able to do since the last 2 or 3 levels are insane.

I'm also up for some Buzz online as well.  I'm mainly missing the online & multi-player trophies for that one.

Don't know if it was only a local thing, but I picked it up at Best Buy.  It was on sale for $34.99, but I got it a little cheaper with Reward Zone coupons and those 10% thingies they mail out and have expire right before something I want to buy is released.

Oh, and I'd do some Buzz whenever.  I just need to get in a game of GTA IV...and finish up the last two MK trophies I need...just started Fallout 3...

Damn it, I need to stop buying games until I beat the ones I have. ;D

That was a fun quick game of Buzz yesterday before the show.  It's pretty lame that you can't do online with more than one person.  But I suppose that does keep idiots from playing online as 3 people in order to rack up easy wins.

Yeah, it was fun, but it was also funny the way my friend was going on about it.  "What?  You can't have multiple people on?  You see, THIS is what I like about XBox over the Playstation.  I think Sony assumes you don't have friends."  Bet you can't guess what he has at home?

I did manage to get a three person 'home' game going, and I have to say, Pie Fight and Point Stealer get a lot more interesting the more people are involved.  But the end of Sofa v. Sofa caught me by surprise...I thought there would be a Final Countdown stage, and was ready for more rounds when it just sort of went "We have a winner!"

I will admit, though, I have no clue about any of the sports questions or, surprisingly, the 'Recent Music' category.  I'm okay on '80s, phenomenal on '90s, but I was shocked out how much I really don't know about music produced in the last ten years.  I got two questions in a row about Nelly Furtado, and the whole time I thought, "Who cares about Nelly Furtado?"  I would say that it's a case of, "Well, MY music was better, YOUR music is the stuff that sucks," but I know for a fact a lot of '90s music sucks, too, so I don't know what to think.   ;D

So, I decided to get online and create my own Buzz! quiz...it's an MST3K quiz, I know it's probably been overdone.

But, I just checked its status on-line...it's currently been played 11 times, and apparently has been rated 1 star each time.  Don't know if people are rating it that way because of difficulty (it's currently listed as 'Hard'), but considering one of the top MyBuzz quizzes is somebody rattling off the 'Taco Bell' ingredients and you guess the taco, I don't know if I should just shrug it off, or wonder what I did wrong.

One thing you have to realize is that your quiz shows up on the website as well, where it can be played by anyone.  Quizzes are always played a dozen or so times in the first day because they show up on the mybuzz website front page as a "recently created" quiz....people just click on them because they're there, not because they have any interest in the topic.  So don't worry too much.

I've created a dozen or so quizzes, and some have been played 10 times, some have been played 200.  I wish I knew how to create a quiz that gets 1000 plays, but I have no idea.  My Tommy Boy Quiz seems to have gained some attention....but you've gotta come up with something unique that simultaneously interests a lot of people.  Not easy.

GB Patch came out today.  Graphics are...SLIGHTLY better (it's still not HD, but they changed the filtering system and it's a lot sharper than it used to be).  Polar Slimer was the first ghost I caught, though, so that much is fixed.  Pay Day is also supposed to be done as well, so what is everybody waiting for?   ;D

Grr.  They just put out the trophy patch in the UK for Disgaea 3.... after I'd just completed it! And according to websites, installing the update invalidates your save file.  *facepalm*

Getting the first Uncharted tomorrow through my rental company.  I've only played the demo, but it played quite well.  I also had MSG 4, but it kept crashing on installation, which seemed to be because of the disc.

Yeah, that's the way I've always been.  I don't consider anything 'done' until I've done it 100%; even when I nearly break the controller trying to get stuff done (GTA Ambulance missions come to mind), I don't like to leave side missions and hidden objectives unfinished.  I never finished playing FFVII, even though I got all the way to the end, because I sold equipment that lets me max out the materia and get the 'Super Edition Materia' thingies, which seemed like they would be very, very useful.  I do draw the line somewhere, though; I never understood why people would play a jRPG and strive to get 99 of every inventory item, especially considering a good portion of the time you can't do that without cheating.

I was also about to add that that's why I like adventure games, since they don't keep track of that stuff, but then I forgot the old ones have 'scores' on them, and there's still quite a few I've never found all the points to (the QFG series comes to mind).

I wouldn't say it's something to strive for, though; I may be able to get 100% on a game, but I have a tough time finishing a lot of the novels I try to write, so the introduction of trophies is a bit of a mixed blessing.

I am totally loving inFamous right now.  Just started about a week ago, don't get to play much with the baby taking up my time, but i work it out.  I think i'm about halfway through (got about half of the second island lit up).

After that, it's more Fat Princess and Uncharted (getting ready for Uncharted 2).

I'm trying to play Uncharted now, but from what I gather the new 3.00 update is causing freezing issues. I get about an hour or two of play in an then it will freeze so that I have to restart my PS3. If I play something else for a while it usually works again, but only for another few hours. Hope they release a patch soon

On Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 it shows the level you're on and which character you're playing in the Friends list of the XMB.  That's kinda cool.

She plays a good game, if you can send the word.  My internet connection gave out during the second game (local connection just conked out for a sec), but the third game was really close for a good long while.

Just in case you wanted to know, one of the hidden trophies on the game actually nothing to do with playing the game:

I would really like to platinum Buzz....I'm pretty close, but with the new one coming out tomorrow, I doubt I will.  I need A LOT more online wins.

I've created about 10 quizzes or so, and I've put WAAAAY too much effort into them, trying to make them interesting, challenging, and unique.  It's tough to come up with a topic that no one else has.  I mean, I could make a quiz about Brett Favre, or Lost, or Metallica....but there's dozens like that out there already.

But if you get the chance, check out my quizzes...there's one on puppets, one on household chemicals....I have one called "complete the group" that I'm proud of....my "weird and random animal" quiz has 300 hits.  They wont change your life or anything, but like I said, I spent a lot of time on them, probably more than I should have.

If my memory serves me right, I think I have ~25 wins in ~65 games.  It's tough to win sometimes.

Definitely seems like a long ways off, considering I've had this game for a year and I'm only halfway there.

Yeah, that's the only pack I've got.  I've been meaning to pick up the others eventually...the only one I'm iffy about is the election 2008 one (it's not that I don't think I would know anything, I just don't think election trivia is worth 8 bucks).

Don't feel too bad about a lack of wins...I think I'm about 46 wins away (I think my record is 4 out of 8 played, though one is that game I played against k1 where I quit so I could see if a friend in the room with me could join as a third contestant.  Turns out, no, you can't).

And I have played your MyBuzz quizzes...not all of them, but I've made three of my own (my own MST3K one was given 1 1/2 stars because, apparently, it's too damn hard, even when I changed the description to read "Enthusiasts only," but I don't think anyone here would have that problem).  My 90s cartoons was pretty well-received, though, and my "The Thing" quiz did okay.  And hey, only seventeen more of them to go, right?

There is sort of a way to 'cheat' with those, though...you can make quizzes private, to only be shared with online friends or just with yourself so people at home can play them.  So, you could make nonsense like, "Red?"  "1. Blue, 2. Wine, 3. Bull, 4. d Foxx"  The answers wouldn't make any sense at all, but it would probably count as part of your quiz total, if you start running low on ideas.

Right behind you! Look out!

But yeah, people really don't care for my Rifftrax quotes one either.  Heh heh...

It's not just about the election, it's a quiz about the year 2008.  Obama's face is on the quiz, but it asks all kinds of current events and pop culture questions in that one.

BTW, the National Geographic quizzes are significantly harder than the others, fair warning.

Well, some news, especially to anyone who wants to upgrade their hard drive at some point or get the new model PS3...

I was about to install some new Buzz quiz packs, when I found out I was running out of HD space.  While for the most part I could probably rectify this by deleting some game data and making some room (which I've done for some stuff I don't play as much anymore), I didn't want to have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling every game I have just to make room, so I bought a new hard drive...500 gigs, more than plenty of space to upgrade.

Unfortunately, right afterwards I found out that while game data can be added and removed whenever you need it to be, save data might be a different matter.  Apparently some stuff, like the save data for Wolfenstein and Mega Man 9, is somehow connected to the console so that you can't copy the data to another PS3 (I guess to prevent stuff like, "Oh, thanks for the save game info, man!  Now I don't actually have to earn online trophies, I can just have yours!").  While Megaman 9 isn't an issue (if I have to start that over again, no big deal), Wolfenstein is, at least, until I've earned all the MP trophies...after that I don't care.  At least for a few games (like RE5) they've patched it to remove this stupid copy nonsense, so 90% of my stuff would go over fine...it's the 10% that's being idiotic.

So, yeah, I unfortunately have to cut back on my Buzz stuff until I can finish Wolfenstein up, or they decide to patch it and remove that crap.  The major thing that sucks is I know nobody on here has that game for PS3, so I can't ask anyone to join up and do some MP with that.  But for awhile I was scared that this would be a problem for pretty much ALL of my MP games, like GTA IV, Ghostbusters, Uncharted 2, and the rest, which thankfully don't seem to have a lock, and once Wolfenstein is cleared up I should be all set.

But for anyone who isn't sure if you have a locked game and you need to upgrade, make sure you check two things...this page here:
http://www.ps3blog.net/2009/08/26/locked-game-saves-on-the-ps3/ (http://www.ps3blog.net/2009/08/26/locked-game-saves-on-the-ps3/)

This is more for downloaded games and video after a new hard drive or PS3 system than anything else, since you can download your stuff from the PSN store on up to 5 activated systems at a time.  If you don't officially return an "activation credit" from a broken or upgraded system, you'll permanently lose a credit.  Thankfully, unlike the save games, the credits are part of your PSN ID, not your console, which is how people are saying these saves should be handled anyway (makes sense, you can back-up saves based on your ID, not on which physical system you happen to have at the time).

How big was your original hard drive? I can't even imagine running out of space on mine, since it's 160gb (149 in reality), and with 15 disc games and 4 downloaded, I still have 103 free. I even have a bunch of Rifftrax shorts on it too.

Mine's the 80 gig model; I bought it right after they announced they would be stopping PS2 backwards compatibility in later models, which was a big selling point for me since I didn't want 50 different consoles hooked up all at once, and while most of the games aren't a problem, there are a few with some weighty installs on them (I think Fallout 3, RE5, and Vampire Rain are all 4 gig installs unto themselves...and before you laugh at Vampire Rain, I hadn't heard of it before I bought it, and it looked interesting, and since I got it cheap, I didn't think it was as bad as everyone said it was), and the DLC for Fallout is pretty huge.  I think I was down to about 5 gig or so before I realized how much space everything was taking up, and there was still a lot of downloadable stuff I was thinking of picking up down the road.  So for the most part I was trying to plan ahead, knowing if things were getting this clogged up by now, it was only going to get worse from here.

EDIT: Well, I looked at my MP stats for Wolfenstein a little more closely...and boy, was I overselling myself on my statistics.  I just remember having to slog and crawl to earn stuff in the MP, when it turns out all that slogging really didn't get me all that far towards trophy accomplishments.  So, here's hoping that their servers contain all that information anyway...I'm backing up my saves and other files and getting this thing swapped.  At worst, all I have to do is, I don't know, play the game some more.  Was planning on going through single-player again anyway, so I guess in the end I can count myself lucky I decided to upgrade before things got even worse.  I think I'll be happier with more space for Buzz and Fallout anyway.

I'm in a similar boat with my 60 GB model.  I'm pretty much at the point where I'm deleting stuff whenever I get a new game.

Unfortunately my PS3 doesn't care for my WD Passport Drive, so I'm stuck until I manage to clear off another one of my external drives...

But that blows about the locked game saves.  But did I read it correctly that you'll be ok as long as you're swapping out the HD with a new one into the same PS3?

Unfortunately my PS3 doesn't care for my WD Passport Drive, so I'm stuck until I manage to clear off another one of my external drives...

But that blows about the locked game saves.  But did I read it correctly that you'll be ok as long as you're swapping out the HD with a new one into the same PS3?

I had the same issue with a WD drive...the PS3 likes FAT32 formatting, whereas if you have XP or higher, chances are your new hard drive prefers NTFS.  If you have no clue what any of that means, just think that somebody out there had no ability to predict how big storage stuff was going to get, and decided, as per the famous quote mis-attributed to Bill Gates, "640K of memory will be enough for anybody."  People made storage spaces with a fixed max capacity, and when that capacity got reached, they had to come out with a whole new system capable of handling the larger sizes.  The max hard drive size FAT32 can handle is 8 terabytes, but the max FILE size FAT32 can handle is 4 gigs, much less than most video files, and so, voila, NTFS.  Problem is, NTFS has its own compatibility problems, and FAT32 is still used in a lot of things, so...essentially, it's all a big mess.  Flash drives are mostly FAT32, though, so if you have a decently big one, you can back up to that, and prices are plummeting on those all the time.

As for swapping out the HD...well, guess what?  It works!  The Wolfenstein data copied over properly, so it shouldn't be a big deal, as long as you use the "Back-up" Utility and not just copy and pasting the files between devices.  So, everything's rosy...except having to install all my games again, but I think that's a small price to pay.

But make sure you buy the right type of hard drive if you do upgrade...it takes a laptop-sized hard drive (2.5", not 3.5"), spinning at 5400 rpm (it may still work at 7200, but a lot of websites aren't sure if that could cause problems or not).  The one I picked up is actually a larger capacity model of the same brand I pulled out, a Seagate Momentus.  The process is pretty self-explanatory, though make sure you use the right screwdriver...it's apparently pretty easy to strip the screws if you're not careful.

EDIT: Oh, and DO deactivate before changing the hard drive.  I just noticed all my PS Store downloads are 'activating' before they do.  All you'd probably have to do if you forget is put the old hard drive back in and deactivate it to fix that, but if you can save yourself an additional step, go ahead and do it before hand.  Although, chances are you probably don't have 5 PS3's, in which case, it's not too big a deal.

2nd EDIT: Well, almost everything's reinstalled...I would also say, if you have the space, back up your system with all your game data intact.  The thing is, the trophy system, while it saves on the Sony servers so you never have to worry about losing your status, has a little issue on the local end...namely, it doesn't like to restore trophies on a new system unless it detects the installed game data.  So, if you swap your drives, if you want to look at your trophies, you'll have to have your games installed when you access the server point.  I wasn't lucky enough to have the space to do that, so now I have to make sure every game is loaded up in order to get back to normal again.

What's funny, though, is that because of this, I've noticed something Bethesda does that is incredibly sneaky and clever.  Unlike every other game, which installs all the data up front and forces you to wait, I noticed Elder Scrolls IV let me sign right on and get gaming, even though I knew for a fact that its game data was the biggest of any of the games on my system.  They avoid this by...get this...installing the game while you have it paused, or are sitting on the status screen.  So, you can run the game off of the disc while playing, but let the game sit idle on a menu and it will start installing files to speed the game up for later.  I'm assuming the same thing happens with Fallout, since there were no files loaded when I started that, either, and that game is at least 4 gigs when it's done.  It's brilliant, and more companies need to do stuff like that.

Earlier this year I upgraded my 40GB PS3 hard drive to a 320GB, and it was largely painless, with the exception of my Rock Band 2 data.  It's completely ridiculous that you cannot transfer save game data from that game.  I had gone through the game, unlocked every venue and song, and none of that transferred over.  I don't care what the reasoning is, it makes no sense that you can't (at the very least) transfer your scores and progress in the game.  So I had to start all over to have access to all the songs.  Which didn't really bother me too much, the game is fun and I don't mind playing it from the start...but I also lost access to my online "band".  The server remembers the band name, so you can't re-name your new band the same name, and I had put a decent amount of time into customizing my band members appearances, the band logo, etc.  In this second playthrough, I haven't touched any of the charater creation stuff, it was too time consuming the first time.  At this point I just want access to all the songs (which I've done).

So, k1, beware of upgrading your hard drive, your RB2 stuff will completely disappear.

Crap.  I spent alot of time making my avatar look like me, complete with all my tattoos (which reminds me I need to add my most recent 2 I got last month).  I also don't want to lose my online band CraptasticA.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So I guess I should tackle the Bladder of Steel trophy before I upgrade then?  That's pretty much the last one I am going to go for in it.

Well,  it looks like my  oft-neglected PS3 will get some playtime in May. (And sooner if I ever sit down to actually play Demon's Souls.) Cause we're kicking it old school with 3d Dot Game Heroes!

Oh yeah. Only the PS3 can handle this graphic firepower, baby.

(And yes, I see the water and lightning effects in those 2 pics. I'm just amused that the next PS3 game that  I'm truly interested in looks very low-res.)

I would really like to platinum Buzz....I'm pretty close, but with the new one coming out tomorrow, I doubt I will.  I need A LOT more online wins.

Same here.  It's the Sofa vs Sofa ones that will be the problem.  Then add in the issues of the leaderboards not updating all the time they've had since the game came out...  (I played a handful of games online over the past few week and they still haven't shown up.)

Should we try to pick a time to play and knock out a few more rounds every now & then?  I'm free most days Mon - Fri during the day, and occasionally after 8 PM EST any day of the week.

I'm game as well.  I did pick up the new Buzz, and it's a definite improvement.  But Buzz is Buzz, and I'm more than happy to jump back into the old one.

I'm at work all weekdays, so that wont work, but I'm online almost every night.  if I see you guys online, I'll send out some invites.

Oh, dear.  Interesting story about Buzz....

Apparently if you delete your game data for any reason and then re-install, it resets your games played.  So, basically, since I installed the new hard drive it's like I have to start from scratch again.  I thought maybe it didn't update the leaderboard again, but it appears I just lost about 5 or 6 Sofa v. Sofa games.  Not too big a deal...I'm guessing we're going to be playing quite a bit of Buzz, anyway...but it's still resetting everything to square one in that regard.  My "MyBuzz" quizzes are okay, though, and it has leaderboard stats for singleplayer, so hopefully I won't have to do all those again.  At least MyBuzz games go quick, even if Single Player gets a little boring after awhile.

Yeah I'm glad we stopped when we did last night.  I'd been up since 5AM EST and was starting to get sloppy.  (Did I get ANY right in that final round of movie questions???  I knew the answers and was still picking the wrong ones.  "Casablanca" *picks Citizen Kane* Wait what?)  And yes, I know Brian is a dog.  Not a kid.

Speaking of Buzz trophies, I was glancing through the lists and found that 90% of the stuff keeping me from Platinum on most games are a couple of weird MP trophies that I don't know if I could do through sheer luck...you know, the "Impossible" trophies.  If you don't have 'em either, I'm more than happy to put aside life, work, and general productivity to help get them for anybody else, but otherwise I just don't think many of these are attainable without a couple of REALLY good friends and a lot of free time.  Sure, trophies are about as important to life as finding a penny in a parking garage, but hey, we're all obsessive-compulsive here, aren't we?   ;D

So anyway, I'll start with games I know people here have:

Ghostbusters: Gozer's Most Wanted...get that and you get everything else, pretty much.  Annoying as crap, though...you have to WIN every mode to get it.  By the way, Containment decides the total number of ghosts by (number of players X 5) +5.  So, 3 people have to capture 20 ghosts to WIN Containment.  With a total of 30 slime tethers between 3 people, that makes it the easiest number to beat without the game being too difficult.  Everything else is simply a matter of surviving until the end of the level without the ghosts winning (be it killing all the stuff in Destruction, staying alive in Survival, etc.) or being #1 at the end of it (Slime Dunk).

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Petrovic trophy is similar to the Ghostbusters one, but it's just a "Top Earner" in every job type, not a "Perfect" victory.  Still sucks, but nowhere near as hard.

Buzz! Quiz: I put it here, but we all know what the deal is with this one.  Bloody 50 Sofa wins.   ;D

And ones I don't think anybody has, but am listing anyway:

Brutal Legend: Main problem is you need 50 wins, and nobody ever signs on, and you can't do it with friends because it pairs you up randomly.  But, since only 3 people are ever on worldwide at any given moment, you'd think it would be easy to get paired up with a friend.

Resident Evil 5: 30 Wins in every MP type, basically, and a team one where you have to get 40 Combo kills in a row.  Trouble is, either everyone online is better than me, or a complete dickhead who I wouldn't be caught dead playing a game against.  It's really weird, but that does seem to be the breakdown of Resident Evil players.  I think for every 1 pleasant match-up I've had, I had about 5-6 matches run by complete turd burglars.

MLB '09 The Show: Let me put it this way...I like baseball, but I really have no clue what the hell is going on in it outside of hitting and catching.  And it wants me to win an online league.  Yeah, that's going to happen.

I still have a few other games I could use MP help with, but at the same time they aren't ridiculous trophies that require strength of will to achieve.  These are the 'Meh' games I need to get:

Borderlands: Don't think any of them are too hard, just some are time-consuming.  I still need to duel and co-op 15 missions, but that's about it.

Wolfenstein: Annoying to have to do them, but nothing here is too weird, just time consuming nonsense.  Maybe getting to Rank 50, but friends aren't really going to help with that unless you join opposite sides of the war effort and just bump each other off with different weapons.  Well, maybe getting the Veil Strike kills one, but only because the Veil Strike is so telegraphed a blind and crippled monkey could get away from it in time.

But hey, if you have the list of ones you need, put 'em up.  I can't guarantee I can help you get them, but I can try.
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3

Obviously the Sofa vs Sofa 50 wins (and 50 games played) for Buzz.

Peggle: Win a 4 player online Peg Party by 100,000 or more.

Uno: Invite a friend to play (And the ridiculous "Make it to the top 50 worldwide leaderboard" which is NEVER going to happen.)

Bejeweled: Complete level 5 of Action Mode.  This one is really annoying me.

Mahjong: Play 50/Win 25/Win 5 in a row (online network games)

Little Big Planet: Party Person (play online with 3 friends), Win a 4 player game, Play, Create, Share.  (Does this reset with each patch or something? I know I've played a TON of the created levels, rated and commented, but still no trophy?)  Also missing all the tougher ones for created levels and users, but whatever.

Haven't even started playing Arkham Asylum, Beatles Rock Band, GH5, World Tour, Smash Hits, Ratchet & Clank, Marvel Ultimate Alliance... Barely played Katamari as well.  So I don't know what's in store for those games.

Pixeljunk Monsters & Pain are really no fun when it comes to getting trophies.  But then again I don't play them all that much...

Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3

Unfortunately, SJP, I sold Ghostbusters, so I can't help you with that one.

As far as Buzz goes, the "get 50 online wins" trophy seems to be the only tough one left for me.  It might be a good idea to play Buzz one or two times each time we play online together....like we play Borderlands for a couple hours, but before we log off, we give each other a couple wins in Buzz.  No matter what though, that trophy is not going to happen anytime soon.

I'm at the point now when I see a game has a bunch of multiplayer trophies, I've pretty much accepted the fact that I'm not going to platinum that game (with the exception of a few).  Uncharted did it right by have only 2 MP trophies, and they were only for just trying out the modes.  I think those are the only MP trophies that should exist.  Incentives to play online should come in the form of in-game rewards/unlocks, not trophies (Modern Warfare 2 has this perfected, Uncharted 2 also does it right).

Red Faction Guerrilla is one of the worst offenders.  I've played that game online more than any other game....well, ever.  And I'm still nowhere near half the online trophies.  Stuff like "get 5,000 kills", "get 250 wins", and "accumulate 100,000 XP" are just absurd.  The thing is, I love that game, it's in contention to be my Game of the Year this year (Uncharted 2 being it's only competition).  So part of me thinks that as long as the online community sticks around for it, I can maybe get them, eventually.

As of right now, my gaming looks locked in for the most part.  Borderlands is going to be my main game right now, I'm really liking it, and the Platinum doesn't seem out of reach, the trophies are reasonable (I wish the mics worked consistently!).  Combine that game with Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, and Red Faction, and I've got all my competitive online gaming needs met for the next few months. That, and I need to do some Buzz Quiz World, which I've been totally neglecting.

My PS3 died this weekend. Flashing red light.  It was a first-gen 60 gig, so even if I buy a new one, no more PS2 games for me. I suppose it lived a good long life.

I believe the appropriate expression is "blerg."

EDIT: Just heard from Sony that I can get it repaired for $130 by mailing it to them. Has anyone done this? Is it worth it?

Considering all the benefits of the 60 GB (same one I have) I'd say it's worth a try and hope for the best.  But I haven't had to deal with their support, so I don't know how good it is.

They also offer a trade-in for a slim for $120. That's very attractive except for the loss of backwards compatibility.

I decided to go with the trade-in. Because A) I rarely play PS2 games anymore, B) the slims are less likely to overheat and die like this one did, and C) bigger hard drive means more downloads.

(Still trying to convince myself it was the best choice.)

Well if you do decide to play a PS2 game, you can always just buy a PS2 for cheap.

Right now the only PS2 games I still play are Guitar Hero 1 & 2, and those I'll be selling once the Rock Band Network releases "Even Rats" by The Slip.  That'll just leave Skullmonkeys as my lone PS1 game.  Too bad it'll never be released as a PSN download.  I love that game.

I never sell games.  Well, very rarely.  Still got a bunch of PS2 games, though I haven't played any in awhile (though I still like to).  Would suck if my 80 gb died on me, since after I've finished a couple of games in here I'd love to dig out Silent Hill 2 and go through that again.

Although, there are always hit and miss rumors about backwards compatibility...I think enough people have raised a stink that Sony isn't completely against the idea of resurrecting it sometime in the future, once they've made back enough money selling PS3 units.  Either that, or figuring out how to re-code PS2 games to work via download from the PS store.  Hate to throw out my old library just because Sony decided my investment is obsolete.

But then, considering I still have a working PS2, several Amigas, and an occasionally working Commodore 64 in the basement, maybe I'm not the best person to ask about trading-up for backwards compatibility purposes.   ;D

Speaking of PS3, still always up for multiplayer.  Suckered into Modern Warfare 2 now, but I'm always game for a couple rounds of Buzz or what have you.

I got matched up on the new Buzz game on Goozex today, so I fired up the first one to try and get a few more games in.  (I figure this one is one I can actually get 100% on if I really put some effort & time into it.)  I checked the all time leaderboards for the past month and it shows nothing... couldn't match up with anyone on the internets to play either.  They didn't kill the online for the old one yet did they?  That'll make it hard to get those last few trophies I need...
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3
Post by: SJP on February 04, 2010, 03:28:04 PM
Online for old Buzz is only dead in the "nobody shows up" sense...you can still go on and play, though finding anybody through random chance is highly unlikely.  It'll still record any points accrued toward trophy unlocks, too, even though the leaderboards never update (I got the "Play 15 Multiplayer Games" one with SmilinJack, even though the leaderboards say I've won 1 game and lost 3).

That's why the multiplayer trophies always bug me, though, too...like I mentioned before, I really suck at sports games, and I really just enjoy playing MLB '09 at home, but I wanted to get the three multiplayer trophies before they decide to shut down the servers to make way for The Show 2010.  But here's the problems...

1. Everybody in the world I hop on with is much, MUCH better than me...the one game I won is more due to luck than anything else.  And I'll be damned if I play anybody but the Tigers.  I don't care if they choke late in the season, they're my team, damn it.  This, however, means winning 5 online games is WAY out of my reach.  Especially considering half the games I played my players were intentionally beaned (though I unintentionally hit one guy in a moment of frustration, after he stole about 20 or 30 bases on me; let's just say, never flail at the controls when your pitching turn comes up).

2. Winning a league, with my record, is impossible.  FINISHING a league is next in line.  Either leagues are way too big (30 players, 300 game-long seasons) to even hope to make it, too high of level, or all full-up private games.  And since they made the brilliant choice of putting all newly created leagues at the END of the list (more appropriately, the 500-page long list), nobody will even SEE a league that's newly created, let alone feel like joining it.  And considering you need at least 6 people to start a league period...well, considering I know exactly 2 people who have this game and are never on when I'm on, that's right out.

Sorry for the digression, but to point out GOOD things, Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 really have it right...either have minor multiplayer trophies or do away with them completely, having only in-game rewards and stats that let OTHER people online know how good you are.  That's really where that stuff counts, anyway.  I'd rather play online for fun against friends and build myself slowly, not feel rushed because if I don't get 100% now, I'll never get it at all because of the company's desire t make server space.

But I might be on later for Buzz...if I can pull myself away from Lego Indiana Jones 2.  I don't know how they make the Lego games so deceptively addictive, but they do.

Saw that PS3 was a trending topic on Twitter and thought that was odd.

Now I see why.  Looks like a good chunk of the "fat" PS3's just got cranky for some reason.

Yes, I went on a mild rampage last night, finding out the servers went down about three seconds AFTER a friend and I quit out of Borderlands: Mad Moxxi's Underdome.  I'm not sure what would've been worse...having gotten to Round 19 (out of 20) for the third time, and realizing after 10 hours that two people can't beat that frigging thing and quitting out (which we did), or thinking we actually had a chance and getting logged out when the servers went down.  Either way, it was a very unproductive day.

And to anyone who got my angry message last night...I'm feeling much better now.  I am NOT done with Borderlands (far from it, I'm so pissed at Mad Moxxi's that I want to get two more people just because that thing is the Mount Everest of videogaming; huge, annoying, and has caused the death and/or insanity of several people, but damn it, it's THERE), but I was about this close to sending a urine-filled hat to the developers to wear.  It's one thing for ME to punish myself unnecessarily for a few trophies, but involving my friends is where I draw the line.   ;D

Get this... last night a PSN friend (who I actually know in real life) sent me a message.  Just as the little notification at the top right appeared, my system shut off, leaving the red light at the front blinking.  Now every time I try to turn it on, the lights go green, yellow, then blinking red.

Now I'm scared.  I wonder if it's to do with this recent thing.  I've got the fat 80g that came with Metal Gear Solid.  I'm guessing Sony will want  me to buy a new slim one.  Those sneaky fuckers.

Might be related to that issue.  I'm assuming they're going to have to do a patch that can be downloaded on a PC and then somehow installed via flash drive or something.

No, it has absolutely nothing to do with he Sunday problems. That was an error with the way that the PS3 calculated dates. If the front light is flashing red, that generally means that your system is overheating.  Make sure that all your air vents are clear and get ready to contact Sony, just in case.

Wow.  $250 CDN to get Sony to fix it... regardless of what is wrong with it?  Looks like they want us all to get the slim ones, I guess I'll have to.  The 3 year replacement plan from best buy sounds like it might be worth the 70 bucks.

I may try to repair the old one eventually, and try to sell it or something.  I noticed people on ebay were bidding up to 80 bucks or so for a fat PS3 that didn't work, so who knows.

You know, I like the PS3 and all, but between the dang addictive trophies and WiiRipOffs, why don't they focus on the one thing the PS3 will be capable of doing in a few months that the other ones won't?  You know, 3-D gaming over an HDMI cable with full color glasses?  Sure, put off THAT firmware update as long as possible, but make sure we get our PS Moves as soon as possible!

(At least, I THINK the PS3 is the only one that could deliver 3-D stuff, since it'll be Blu-Ray based, and granted, it's only v1.3 so it won't be full progressive 3-D, but at least getting that out the door would be a start, wouldn't it?)

Suckered into Modern Warfare 2 now, but I'm always game for a couple rounds of Buzz or what have you.

yeah i gave my ps2 to a friend of a friend who's house burned down a while ago, but kept most of my games, including all my silent hill games.  if i wanted to get another PS2 for some reason, it would only cost $100 for a new one, but considering how i haven't even really hooked it up for a while, don't think i will worry about it, i just have to keep them around for old time's sake.  oh and apparently ps1 games are compatible with the slim ps3 so sometime i shall have to play my only 2 ps1 games silent hill and final fantasy 8

Let me rephrase the Sony line there:

"Due to the fact that we now have lots of PS3 games, we'd like to officially give the finger to all the great titles that came out on our last system.  If you'd like to play those again, either hook up your old system next to it at some additional cost, or wait until PS4 when we decide to re-emulate those and give the finger to the PS3 games.  Enjoy!"   ;D

That said, they'll have to pry my 'fat' PS3 away from my cold, dead fingers.  I do admit I haven't played too many PS2 games recently, but I do still pop them in, and they do look a lot better all enhanced and smoothed than they do on a PS2.  Heck, even the PS1 emulation is better than the PS2's emulation of it.  I used to get weird boxes around sprites when I would play stuff on the PS2 that I don't get anymore.

Never heard of it before.  I'm still mopey because I just put in MLB 09 today and found out they shut down the online servers.  They really need to patch these old games with online-only trophies if they don't plan on leaving the server up for a good long while to remove them from the overall percentage worth...now I have a game that's going to sit there like a lump at 88% complete forever, and that's just rude.  Not like I bought it to play online anyway (I do occasionally play with people in person, Sony), why screw the customer?   :(

Sorry, not a trophy whore per se, just OCD about 100% completion-type stuff.  Keeps the games from just gathering dust on the shelf.  But I digress.

So, what is this Modnation Racers, and how can I subscribe to its newsletter?

Best I can tell is that it's a cross between LittleBigPlanet (as far as being able to customize your guy & kart AND build tracks) and Mario Kart.  Both those games rock, so I'm hoping this one is good.

The only videos I've watched are the ones on PSN on customizing the characters.

Looks like if you pre-order through Amazon you save 3 bucks (woo.  ::) ) but you also get $10 towards future video game purchase.  Plus getting Sackboy, Ratchet & Clank, and one of the 4 random bonus characters.

Best Buy pre-order gets you Nathan Drake, Game Stop (I think) gets you Kratos.

I normally shop at Best Buy, but since I finally got around to the God of War series this month, playing as the biggest, unsympathetic a-hole history has ever seen does sound tempting...and there's Kratos.

 :rimshot:

Seriously, though, is ANYBODY supposed to root for Kratos?  I mean, the games are fun, but damn, I don't think I've ever played a game where I would actually cheer if the main character died horribly at the end for all the crap he's done.

"Kratos, um, thanks for getting rid of Ares and all..."
"NOT NOW!  I'M DESTROYING CRETE!"
"Yes, that's kind of what we wanted to talk to you about.  You see, we didn't expect you to actually, well...declare war on EVERYBODY.  At the same time."
"I AM THE GOD OF WAR!  WAR IS MIGHT!  I'M GOING TO STEP ON THIS PUPPY!"
"Kratos, the other gods are starting to talk.  They're thinking that maybe you should step down for a bit, maybe have some tea and a muffin."
"HOW DARE YOU DEFY ME, ATHENA!  YOU DARE OPPOSE ME, IN MY HOUR OF TRIUMPH?  I'M PERFECTLY FINE, AND IF YOU DON'T SHUT UP I'LL STAB YOU IN THE FACE!"
"All right, then.  Zeus?"
*Zeus takes matters into his own hands*
"HOW DARE YOU TRY TO STOP ME BEFORE I BLOW UP THE UNIVERSE!  I'LL KILL YOU!  I'LL KILL YOU ALL!"
"Yes, of course, Kratos.  We can talk about it over lunch.  By the way, I think this sword would look REALLY good in...I mean, ON you.  Try it on?"

It takes a lot of balls to make Zeus, of all people, to look rational.

Fiddling around with my new 250GB slim model now.  Early thoughts:

* Really like the Slim's design.  Slick looking piece of hardware, especially in terms of how well it will blend with other AV components.  Also, really glad I waited to get a PS3 until they released a matte model.  Fingerprint magnets make me cuckoo.

* A standard def AV cable?  Really?  Somebody shells out $350 for a piece of tech and they can't even kick 'em down a component cable?  Cheap bastards.

* Why are Sony's system manuals always so drab and utilitarian?   This is a game console, guys, not a camcorder battery charger.  Throw me some color or some nifty hints and tips, would ya?

* Dashboard, likewise, is utilitarian and lacking any sort of character.  Typical Sony.  On the other hand, I seem to be able to find stuff in it, which is more than I can say for the international airport-level confusion presented by Xbox 360's cute but baffling front end.

* Eyeballing the PS3 section at Fry's to find a couple of games, I have to wonder: Shouldn't a console several years into its lifespan have more than 7 exclusives that look remotely interesting?  (And three of those are sequels!)

* Huge win: The Internet connection appears to function over the hotel's notoriously spotty wireless.  My 360 flatly refuses to even attempt it when I'm lucky enough to have a room with a wired connection.

I agree about the cable, but at least there IS one in the box, for those who want to get going right away without having to run back to the store. It'll hold you over, at the minimum.

I also agree that the default user interface looks like utilitarian crap - but you can download themes to spruce the place up a bit (there are hundreds for free on PSN, and you can also download user-made ones from numerous websites and transfer them to the system via USB).

For exclusive games, I would start with inFamous and Uncharted (it's worth playing the first before you get the second). Both are $30 now at most stores I've seen. Look for Killzone 2 if you like shooters (I don't, but that's just me). God of War 3 is a great gory beat-em-up, but if you didn't play the first 2 on PS2 the "story" such as it is will leave you a bit out of sorts (but you could always read a synopsis on wikipedia). If you like racing games, Wipeout HD is very nice - you can download that from PSN. If you like RPGs, definitely check out 3D Dot Game Heroes.

While it's true that a lot of the PS exclusives are sequels, some of them are sequels to classic PS2 franchises, but they're still the first of their series on the PS3. Sony doesn't blow money creating a false wall of exclusives like Microsoft does, they just focus on making the exclusives they do have way better. :)

Yeah I got my 250 gb slim model for christmas and was glad that I had an old ps2 component cable that worked (good enough until I got/found my hdmi cable at the time)  but after realizing how crappy the tv was that's here I wish that I had shipped the basic cable instead of component :p on and for the drab background, I just put up various background images and it looks cool...and you can get god of war 1 and 2 for ps3 on a single disc for cheap now if you want to play them before 3

And Chaos reemerges from purgatory to defend his console.  :)  Don't worry, I'm not here to bash, merely to observe and report.

As far as the AV cable goes, they might as well have bundled a dog turd with the system for all the use I'll get out of it.  I won't insult the dignity of my high-powered HD gaming system by hobbling it with a composite video signal.  (I picked up an inexpensive HDMI before I even opened the box.)  Bundling of bare bones accessories is just one of those things that's always bugged me about Sony.  My 360 came with a combined composite/component cable, and it wasn't even the top of the line model.

The dashboard style is all down to preference.  I happen to prefer the colorful and flashy NXE, even though I can never find the damned thing I'm looking for on it.  I do like the fact that Sony seems to give you a lot more fine-grained control over settings.

The games I ended up grabbing were Uncharted and Little Big Planet, to supplement the freebie (and surprisingly entertaining) Shaun White Snowboarding that came with it.  Haven't played either exclusive yet, as much of my available play time last night was occupied with trying to troubleshoot the failure/reboot loop that occurred while I was upgrading to System Update 3.30.  Not the greatest first impression, I'm afraid.

Skipping inFamous at least for now, since it sounds too similar to Crackdown.  I had God of War 1 on the PS2, but never really got into it.  I'll probably pick up the 1&2 bundle eventually, just so I can enjoy the remastered digital boobies in high def.

I personally consider the "wall of false exclusives" to be Phil Spector's single greatest contribution to the world of gaming.

One thing that I do like about the PS3, and one of the things I lament about a couple of my friends going for the 360 instead, is the online gaming service.  Despite all the constant spam mails informing me otherwise, I'm glad going online to play games doesn't require payment, and the store is based on real currency, not some goofy points system.  Will the service always be free?  No clue.  But $8 a month just to access a basic feature of almost every game ever made after 1995 seems a little ridiculous to me, especially since PCs have been doing it for free for a lot longer, and companies that support those seem to be doing just fine for themselves without extra fees...well, most of them, anyway... *cough cough* WORLD OF WARCRAFT *cough cough*

But then, a lot more people own XBoxes, and people pay more than that a month just for the privilege of one game *cough cough* SEE ABOVE *cough cough*, so what do I know?

Actually I was just looking at some of the features they didn't really focus on at their E3 conference...

Netflix without using the Disc.
Hulu access (which we used to be able to do dammit.)

Those are slightly appealing, but again, can do it free on my PC.  Don't really want to pay for it.

If the discount you get on the PSN content includes Rock Band DLC, then I can probably justify it given the amount I've picked up.
Rewards program... I'd like more info on how that works exactly.

Token Wagering: Why yes, I'd like to lose at more things repeatedly so my friends can get free stuff!  :D

Cloud Storage for Game Saves: Does it work on the ones that are "locked" and cant be copied like Rock Band? (I don't want to have to start over and recreate characters or lose progress on career mode.)  It'd be nice to know since I still haven't swapped out my 60GB HD because of that reason.  And every time I download a demo I have to delete something at this point...

Just looked up the Plus announcement.  Not my thing.  Like I said, I don't care much for yearly subscriptions, even if they go, "Here!  Have a free game!"  I trust subscriptions that offer free stuff as far as I can punch them.

As a wise man once said:

Well I'll be getting Playstation Plus, so I'll be sure to post some of my thoughts and whatever stuff I get from it here. I just hope this means they're trying to make online play even better (not that I've ever really had a lag/connection issue) by letting whoever wants to be charged for it have that option.

Bear in mind that though Uncharted is fun, the sequel so much better.

Honestly, I though Crackdown was more fun than inFamous.  Another exclusive the PS3 has is the rather awesome Valkyria Chronicles, though I don't know if turn-based strategy games ala X-Com are your thing.

And it looks like that the Studio Ghibli game is exclusive to Sony, too.

Much like Hulu Plus on Xbox requires  an Xbox Live Gold subscription on top of the $9.99 monthly fee, some language found on the Hulu Plus site says that only PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to use the service on PS3.

The HTML source for the Hulu Plus "Devices" page includes specific instructions for the PS3, which are presumably meant to be displayed when the service goes live. The instructions describe how to redeem a code in the PlayStation Store to download the client (which means that Hulu isn't planning to release this as a disc-only service like Netflix -- yay!) with the following caveat: "Note: you must be a subscriber of the Playstation Plus Network."

While this seems pretty clear on the surface, the fact remains that neither Hulu nor Sony have intentionally told the public anything. Sony's Patrick Seybold told Joystiq that "We'll have more info on how and when Hulu Plus will be coming to PlayStation 3 soon." It's quite possible that the specifics of the agreement are still being worked out.

It's all irrelevant for non-Americans anyway, since the rest of the world doesn't get NetFlix OR Hulu.

Tomorrow I will finally be signing up for Plus. Had to wait until payday, since some places can't send checks out less than 3 weeks late.  :grr:
Suppose I'll download everything that is free, just for the sake of getting it. Not like i have much interest in playing Wipeout HD, but who knows, maybe I'll like it.
Apparently Europeans get a free copy of Littlebigplanet when they sign up.

UPDATE: Downloaded all the free games that come available right now. So far I've only tried out Age of Zombies, but it's a lot of fun! I'm pretty bad at it though...

PlayStation Plus Hulu = A console Hulu Plus preview, which will become available to "select" subscribers of Sony's PlayStation Plus program. Posting on the official PlayStation blog, PSN senior director Susan Panico has explained that all Sony subscribers may download the Hulu Plus software as of today and "request an invitation to the exclusive preview." If you're already a member of Hulu Plus (you can request an invitation to subscribe online), you'll be able to access the preview today through your PlayStation Plus account.

Hulu's enhanced streaming service, which provides access to TV shows from ABC, FOX, NBC, ETC, will incur a monthly fee of $9.99 -- even to PlayStation Plus subscribers participating in the sneak peek. It'll become available (and effectively cheaper) to all PS3 owners "in the coming months," Panico said (so much for that "July" launch, huh?). An Xbox 360 version is slated for launch in early 2011.

My PS3 Netflix disc is borked.  From a quick Google search it seems that it's a fairly common issue.  After awhile a weird brown ring appears to burn into the disc rendering it unreadable.

I'm even more convinced it's common by how easy it was to get a new disc.  My wife opened netflix.com and just clicked a button on My Account and that was it.  No questions asked, no forms to fill out.  Just clicked the button.

Thankfully we won't need a disc in a few months, but still...

So, Move is released in less than a week. Anyone planning on getting it? I'm considering it, but $100 is a bit way too much to spend right now, it'll all depend on what my car situation is by then. I may just wait until there are actual games out for it though.

I am, though it may not be a "release-day" buy.  I mostly want it for Dead Space: Extraction.  I do have a Wii, too, but that's a game I think I'd probably enjoy more in widescreen in high-def.  I certainly hope sales-wise it does a lot better (I'm guessing it's no mistake it's coming bundled with Dead Space 2).

Speaking of which, I think it's high time that, with the Move coming out, Sony gets Namco and sega to dust off the entire Time Crisis and House of the Dead franchises, respectively, and release them in big compilation sets, compatible with the Move.  I still have Time Crisis 1 for the PS, but I can't play it because the light gun physically doesn't work with my TV.  Finally having a standardized controller that works BETTER than the original GunCon would go a long way to making me happy.

Yeah, I'll be getting it.  My wife left earlier today for TX until later next week sometime.  So I'll be looking for some new things to entertain the 4 yr old with.  He is still mad that I haven't fixed the Wii after it bricked itself, so I think my $100 Best Buy card might be getting used for Move.  (Otherwise I'll save it for Rock Band 3.)

I thought it had come out earlier in the week...went into Best Buy yesterday looking for it, then saw it was coming out today.

Guess it ended up being a first day purchase for me.   ;D

I also ended up having to buy the damn flat-screen clip, too, which is about 14 bucks too expensive for being a piece of plastic, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to grab the nunchuk...I mean, "navigation" controller.  I will try out the Wii Sport...I mean "Sports Champions" thing once it's done charging.  But it is VERY sensitive, as I found out trying to use it on the XMB screen.

I didn't realize the little "light ball" on the end was soft rubber, either...it's definitely not something I want lying on the floor to get stepped by accident and crush the LED inside.

I'm all ready for Dead Space: Extraction, though, when it comes out in 5 months.

I am pretty impressed with the games that use the camera to show you holding something on screen. It does real well with the motion tracking and really looks like you're holding whatever it is on screen.

The party game is a fun to play with the kids (or drunk I imagine)

Time Crisis!
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3
Post by: SJP on September 17, 2010, 11:59:48 PM
See?  See, I SAID they needed to get Time Crisis on here!  Now, if they'd only release the entire run of Time Crisis in one box...

I did manage to do the archery segment for Sports Champions...haven't played the others, but I'm a sucker for archery things.  The controller...dare I say it...does feel a little more responsive than the Wii, or if not exactly more responsive, than less 'shaky.'  Every time I use my Wii (man, that sounds dirty), the controller icon always seems to have a little 'jitter' in it that I haven't seen with the Move.  The main problem is the difficulty ratchets up WAY too quickly...I got to the silver cup, and by level 2 the computer was shooting faster than the target was appearing.  It still misses occasionally, but only enough to make it feel like pity misses.  That second one is the only one so far I can't get a 3 star rating on, and I mean not even CLOSE...later levels are easier than that one.

Don't get me wrong, I know it's a clear marketing gimmick and an absolute rip-off of Nintendo, but considering all the light gun games Sony is likely to get onboard, it was probably good idea (or a smart...Move?  Somebody slap me for that one!) to do it...now Microsoft's the only one without one, and it seems like Halo and Gears of War are the only exclusive deals Microsoft's got on the table.  This isn't to slap 360 owners (it's got games I want, certainly), but Microsoft got the edge by being first on the market, and it seems like it rested on that for too long...it may still be the most prevalent and most popular of the three systems, but it's also the least 'decked out' in terms of add-ons and gadgetry.  Maybe the Kinect will change that, I don't know, but the Move is definitely a better toy than I thought it would be.

That bulb on the end, though...MAN, does that thing look goofy.

My thoughts about move (without having played it... just from what i researched) are that its like the eyetoy of last generation, granted they are pushing it harder this time, it will be a failure much the same. Probably fun though, I'll pick up the move set when everything can be had for dirt cheap.

Also, I love my wii. No need for this right now.

It is like the EyeToy but WAY more responsive & accurate thanks to having the Move controller(s).  I had the EyePlay or whatever it was for PS2 & it BLEW.  But yes, it's essentially the EyeToy meets Wii.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/09/22/netflix-streaming-its-way-to-canada-today/

Apparently Canada is streaming Netflix without the disc. And another source saying the US will get it in October. Still would like some official word though about when.

HURRY UP ALREADY!  :D

Sports Champions isn't half bad.  I like the Disc Golf much better than the Wii version & the Bocci is pretty fun.

Canada has indeed gotten streaming Netflix without the disc. I just installed it over the weekend, it's a 19 meg download direct to the PS3 and then it just works (once you have a subscription, of course).

Unlimited streaming for $8 a month... not too shabby, all things considered, especially when you look at how pricey and crappy our cable and satellite services are. Of course, because of all the licencing stupidity between Canada and the US, the selection on Netflix is still pretty awful, but it's been up for less than a week so far so I think they deserve a chance to work out the kinks and build up their library.

Sweet! (Although odd that it's coming out on the 18th & not on the 19th with the regular update stuff.  Maybe they want to lessen the traffic on Tuesday?)
Now if only it would support external alternate tracks like Rifftrax!

They've done it a few times with stuff like Rag Doll Kung Fu & one or 2 others, but it's really only been a regular thing with the PSN+ that started recently.
They swap it out each month.  (If you check a few posts back you can see what last months were.)

Would it even be up this early? Seems like the PSN updates don't usually happen til 7pm EST at the earliest most weeks.

**Ok, it is there already & it's only a 19MB download so it took about 10 seconds.  Sweet!

 Still no connection. I'll have to get working on it after the ID4 Rifftrax is over.

Also, there's reports that the Wii also has an app for free. Anyone want to confirm this?

Ok, just turned it on, still no internet yet SOMEHOW the icon has appeared. So I can see it, but can't download it.

Update: SUCCESS! Just had to restart the actual router, not the modem  ::)

Works great!

If there's anything I love more than candy, it's scary movies and free s**t. So 'tis the season for sweets and frights and deals; with Halloween just a few weeks away, and Sony's celebrating with some "killer" horror flick deals on the PlayStation Network video store.

Starting this Saturday, a "Midnight Movie" promotion will allow you to download and watch Bram Stroker's Dracula for free, provided you login between 5:00pm and 3:00am on Sunday. (Times are Pacific.)

The promotion will continue for the next three weeks, with MTV's Savage County and the original Nightmare on Elm Street part of the "Midnight Movie" promotions (on October 23 and October 30, respectively).

Sony is also discounting horror films with its "Halloween Deal of the Week" promotion, which includes gems like Candyman, Cabin Fever, The Descent, and... Troll 2.

October 12 -18, 2010: “Monster Mayhem”

“Midnight Movie” free rental on 10/16: "Bram Stoker's Dracula"
Monster Collection: “Wolfman,” “Dracula,” “Frankenstein,” “Bride of Frankenstein,” “Creature from the Black Lagoon,” “Night of the Living Dead,” “Puppet Master,” “Daybreakers,” “The Fly” and more.
Halloween Deal of the Week: “Candyman,” “Let the Right One In,” “Troll 2,” “Shaun of the Dead,” “Dracula (1979),” “Leprechaun,” “Wishmaster,” “Dawn of the Dead” and more.

October 19 – 25, 2010: “Nail-Biting Thrillers”

“Midnight Movie” free rental on 10/23: MTV’s "Savage County"
Thriller Collection: “The Amityville Horror” series, “Poltergeist” series, “The Exorcist” series, “The Lost Boys” series, “The Crazies,” “The Omen,” “Paranormal Activity,” “What Lies Beneath,” “Curse of the Zodiac,” “Constantine,” “The Shining” and more.
Halloween Deal of the Week: “The Forgotten,” “The Mothman Prophecies,” “Hollow Man 2,” “Village of the Damned,” “Shutter,” “The Descent,” “The Eye” and more.

October 26 - November 1, 2010: “Spine-Chilling Slashers”

“Midnight Movie” free rental on 10/30: "Nightmare on Elm Street" (original)
Slasher Collection: “Nightmare on Elm Street” series, “Halloween” series, “Scream” series, “Saw” series, “Jeepers Creepers,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Friday the 13th,” “Silence of the Lambs,” “American Psycho” and more.
Halloween Deal of the Week: “Idle Hands,” “Severance,” “The Funhouse,” “Joy Ride,” “Cabin Fever,” “American Psycho,” “Saw,” “Saw II,” “See No Evil,” “Hard Candy” and more.

And too bad I didn't take advantage of that nifty cloud while I had my Plus Membership.  PS3 hard drive just hit the endless "hard drive corrupted/restore" loop that never actually fixes anything.  Was working fine when I shut it down earlier in the day (and shut it down properly via the command and not harshly), so I'm guessing the boot sector got hosed.  I'm prayin' that most of the save games are actually intact and I can rescue them...damn GTAIV pigeons, if I have to hunt them all down again...

Just picked up a 500 GB drive for my PS3.  I figure if there's games I want to go back to like finishing up those last few trophies on Rock Band 2, I can probably pop the old drive back in just for those one or two games.

What was the thing I needed to do before I swap the drives? Deauthorize or something?

I backed up the whole system to a WD Passport drive last night.

I bought the 500 GB WD Scorpio Blue drive based on the reviews that were mainly from PS3 users.

I'm just trying to remember... why do I need to deactivate my PSN account on the old drive before I do this? I remember something about that, but not sure why I needed to. Or if that's a non-issue now.

Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3

It's not your online account per se...there's apparently something in the system settings (not sure where) that works like an activation credit.  Your online account is tied to these credits, which means if you go to a friend's house, say, and want to be able to access all your games or account stuff (like, your unlocked characters in Scott Pilgrim so you don't have to start at level 1), you can activate it on only so many different systems at once before it says, "Ok, you have to deactivate one of these before you activate it on another."

If you take out your hard drive before deactivating it (like I did), you basically lose an activation credit right off the bat, so if you find the deactivation thingie, you'll be able to swap out the hard drive and activate the new one with no problems.

If you don't plan on putting your ID on a bunch of different consoles, though, I wouldn't lose sleep about the activation nonsense.  If it's just the one system, it won't set you back by too much.

Let me know when you figure it out.

Looks like the system data is stored somewhere internal which was nice. Popped out the old drive popped in the new one. Activated my account and I'm back in business.

I know on some models you need to download the system stuff to a flash drive and load it that way.  Reloading the backup now while I watch tv.

Super simple. Only issue was one of the screws stripped IMMEDIATELY. I ended up using pliers and broke off part of the harness around the screw to get it out, so be careful of that.

Updated the firmware the other day & played for a bit.  This morning I decided to check out the My Channels thing (which told me I need to download Netflix for it to work which is odd since I already have Netflix on the PS3...)  So rather than download it again I clicked on the old Netflix icon & the machine froze on me.

Then I got a "Hard Disk Database Will Be Rebuilt" (With only an option to click OK)  Rebooted & the same thing.

I said OK and it looks like everythings still ok, but that was a little scary.

Back up important stuff if you can.  Same thing happened to me.  Then the next day it happened again, and hard drive rebuilt, and rebuilt, and rebuilt, and rebuilt...and then I just had to format the thing to get it to work.  I'm just glad game stuff is ALL I keep on my PS3.

Does it keep flashing red and never connect?  If that's the case, plug it into your PS3 with a USB cord, then sync it.  It has to 'assign' itself to a particular PS3 before it'll work.  Had that problem when I tried to play Deadstorm Pirates at a friend's place...I couldn't figure out why it just kept blinking when I tried to turn it on...luckily I figured it out the problem before TOO long.
Title: Re: riffttrax members on the ps3
Post by: spaceforarent on November 09, 2011, 04:09:39 PM
I got it to work. I think the problem was that I had it plugged into the PS3 to charge it, the instructions said not to do that. Of course I messed up the calibration for Resistance 3 so I just gave up trying to play with it for today.
I'm worried it jut won't work that well on my tv though. It's pretty small (22'') and it's location isn't all that great either. Eventually I plan on getting a bigger tv (might even go 3d) when I get my tax refund, so it won't be a total waste if I can't get it working now.

Hey PS+  people? Good news for you.

Quote
Subscribers to PlayStation Plus will be offered a free game every two days, platform holder Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed.

Kicking off today, the offer allows members to download a single free title from the PlayStation Store every two days, starting with retro classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 today.

The offer includes eight PSN games, two Minis and two PSOne Classics. All games have been available on Plus over the past 18 months, and Sony reckons they’re ideal choices for newcomers to the service.

Sonic 2 will be available until December 3, after which another title will be offered. Sony recommends checking the PS Store to see what games are available and snap them up before they are gone.

Sony's Ross McGrath commented: "Remember, all these are added extras to this month's content - as a PlayStation Plus subscriber you can still expect the same level of great content during December 2011, as well as enjoying this superb offer, which is perfect for filling gaps in your collection if you're a late-comer to Plus, or even better if you've never been a subscriber before."

So, nothing really special for long time members like me.

I still have no idea when my subscription expires, or how to find that out. I think I signed up during the first month, which game me a year plus 3 extra months. Then they gave us another extra 3 months after they were hacked, I believe.

If anyone wants to add me on PS3, feel free. My callsign/gamertag/whatever should be pretty obvious. I don't have a lot of multiplayer games, but I do have Burnout Paradise, Red Faction Guerilla, Super Puzzle fighter 2 turbo HD remix, Marvel Vs Capcom 2(wow, I guess I do have a few). I might be picking up Call of Duty MW2 the end of this week... might, I'm not looking forward to getting my ass kicked though. I love playing against real peeps online, but dammit I hate getting my ass kicked by people who are possibly younger than most fetuses.

I don't think I have any multiplayer games people are interested in playing, but you might find me in Playstation Home skulking around as NamelessWon, too intimidated to talk to anyone. Feel free to try to strike up a conversation if you should find me, but don't take it personally if I run away in terror.

(Actually, I did try to chat someone up once in DC Universe Online. I accidentally challenged her to a duel and got my ass kicked in under 5 seconds. This is why I don't talk to strangers in real life.)

Nice.  More HD remakes.  I need more old, single player games keeping me away from friends and well-wishers I haven't talked to in ages.

I wanted to start the New Year on good footing in the gaming department, but I've been so burnt out lately with work and other things that hopping on and doing the ol' multiplayer would probably mean not much fun for anyone else, because all I'd probably do is grunt, nod, and talk about how I need to Platinum Wolfenstein one of these days.

I think after this weekend I'll be in much higher spirits.

I've decided to keep it. Doesn't look like anyone's interested anyway. I got Tom Clancy's Hawx really cheap and damn... it is taking forever for the data to install. I love some of the features of Next gen gaming platforms, but god dammit at least on the NES you didn't need to wait up to half an hour to play a game while the data is installed. Oh man, Metal Gear Solid 4 was a damn nightmare too when it came to game data.

If you think that's bad, I remember hearing somewhere that Hideo Kojima would never release MGS4 for the 360.  Not because he hates the platform, but because the data pretty much fills up the Blu-ray disc as it is.  It'd reportedly take 6 DVDs to hold the game, and that's way more disc swapping than anyone has patience for.  At least, in this day and age.  I remember playing Space Quest 4 on my Amiga 500 from beginning to end with no hard drive and no second disk drive.  It took 3 minutes to swap disks in and out every time I walked to a new screen.  Needless to say, I was very happy when Sierra, being the class acts they were in the early '90s, sent me the walkthrough for the game for free when I wrote to them, and I only had to enter a handful of screens more than once.

Of course, now disc swapping can actually be useful, like getting the free checkpoint in the 360's Dead Space 2 Hardcore mode, but hey, I'd say that's a small blessing in a sea of annoyances.

Don't download DC Universe Online if you hate load times.  It's got something like 18 GB to install AFTER the initial game install that you download from the store.  And it's an in-game download so you sit and stare at the same picture on the screen the entire time.  (I've been having it run the download for an hour or so here and there if I'm doing something else.)

I've tried out 3d on two different games now, Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3.

Uncharted looks absolutely gorgeous, as it should. I played through part of the boat chapter and actually just stood there looking around at all the detail for awhile. When I actually played I found that really being able to see bullet trails makes finding far off enemies much easier to spot. I did have a problem with ledges though, as in every time I turned around I seemed to be falling down and grabbing onto them.

Resistance on the other hand, didn't look that great. Maybe I'm a bit too tired but everything seemed blurry and not lined up. The crosshair was really hard to see so I had no idea what I was aiming at. I'll give it a try again later in hopes that it gets better.

Currently downloading Shadow of the Colossus from the PSN, despite not really liking the game (the bosses were fun, but WAY too much nothing in-between). It's a 6gb download, so I'll be trying that 3d out in...a week?

If you think that's bad, I remember hearing somewhere that Hideo Kojima would never release MGS4 for the 360.  Not because he hates the platform, but because the data pretty much fills up the Blu-ray disc as it is.  It'd reportedly take 6 DVDs to hold the game, and that's way more disc swapping than anyone has patience for.
Damn! Still though, swapping discs would be faster than the 10-15 minutes it takes for another chapter to start.  :)

I have been having a strange problem with my PS3 where during cutscenes on three different games I couldn't hear the characters talking at all except VERY faintly in the background. I did a little trouble-shooting and found out it was the HDMI cable... annoying, but it's still better than the system being defective. i bought a cheaper HDMI cable... and actually it seems to be working great. Hell, it was even gold-plated.

Finally got Ratchet and Clank All 4 One the other day for only $20 at Target. From what I've heard that's about the right price for it. Not that it's a bad game, just short and clearly meant to be played with other people. Can't wait for the HD collection (http://www.amazon.com/Ratchet-Clank-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B0050SXI6K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334024189&sr=8-1) to come out.

Also I bought a second PS3.

Pantload of free games for PSN+ members.  Just downloaded InFamous 2, LBP 2, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and traded in my games on Goozex for a crap-ton of points.

Anyone have any idea how to get the digital copy of Ratchet & Clank All For One to recognize the saved game file from the disc version? I didn't have this issue with other games I've changed from the disc over to the digital like LittleBigPlanet.

I really don't want to start over since I was about 3,000 bolts away from the 1,000,000 bolt trophy.

Well, looks like my first PS3, purchased around December 2008, is starting to die. Started getting these colored lines randomly appearing all over the screen, so I assume the GPU is going. Good thing I bought a second system a few months ago, and that PS+ lets me upload all my save files, so no worries about losing anything.

I first got my PS3 back in 2008, as my mom and I figured that it would win in the format war...and we even got an HD TV. Long story short, the old PS3 is dead (Yellow Light of Death ._.), and I've got the PS3 Slim as of March 2011. I have these games.

-Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition (sold the original a long time ago, got this for 30 bucks at Gamestop used)
-LittleBigPlanet 2 Special Edition (got it for $25 on Amazon)
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (got it for $40 at Pawn America)
-Journey: Collector's Edition

I had a bunch of other games, and from the top of my memory, I owned these before I greedily, and now regrettably, sold to get some extra money.

-Resident Evil 5
-Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
-Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
-Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
-BioShock
-BioShock 2
-Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
-Sonic Generations
-LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition
-Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition
-Grand Theft Auto IV

Good news all.

For quite a while now, XBL users have been able to log into Live on their computers and purchase stuff and redeem codes from the website. Well, you can now do the same on the PSN by heading to: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/

This is a good thing because for one thing, I find the current PSN store on the PS3 to be rather clunky, to understate things greatly.

Eh, I'll post this here.

Okay, have you seen Playstation's latest commercial? Well, they're auctioning off the costumes and props from it over here: https://www.bidforgreatness.com/

The catch? You bid using your Gold Trophies. (No, you don't lose them from your account.) The other catch? The current item (a costume from Killzone) is 975 Gold trophies, so yeah, good luck there.

Can someone help me with this?  I'm trying to play Demon's Souls offline but can't figure out how.  I know on Xbox 360 all I have to do is start, and then cancel, a party, but I'm not sure what to do on PS3.

(In case you're wondering, the reason is that the early game is STILL full of maxed-out twink invaders who 1-shot me even through a greatshield.)

I've got a PSvita... but honestly I don't know a lot of great games for it. To be honest I am sick of the damned fighting games and such, and weirdly enough, sports games(yeah) have been a lot more fun. The Hot Shots Tennis and Golfing games are actually pretty fun! Yeah, go figure. I think I'm just burned the hell out on action games.  :(

Is there any way to transfer game saves from one PS3 to another?  My PS3 will turn on and eject the disc, but when I try to connect it to the tv with the HDMI I get a Signal Not Found message.  The cable itself works fine and it's been tried with another working one to no avail.

You could put the save on a USB or upload it to the cloud, but you'd need to see to do that unless you knew precisely how numerous your saved data list is so you could blindly navigate the menus OR you could repeat the same steps a bunch of times, all the while pressing down on the d-pad once more than previously input before sending yet another of your saves to the cloud... if you're tenaciously determined/crazy.

Do you have a ps2 kicking around? Try connecting with the old rca cables. (Might have to do the trick to switch the output. Can't remember what it is but I had to do it once or twice when bringing my PS3 to my parents house before they got an hdtv

Yeah, I have a PS2, but my current setup involves a HDTV, so I'm not sure it still applies.

Even HDTVs usually have an old fashioned Red-White-Yellow component cable input somewhere.

Good News!  Found out that the problem was with the HDMI port.  It was loose and thus could not connect.   Managed to obtain a HD Component cable from Gamestop and I can now use my PS3 again.  Problem now is how to fix the picture quality since it's worse than before.

Component is always worse than HDMI. It shouldn't be WAY worse, but HDMI is the superior technology.

PSN is still down for me...  :(

I can't play any of the "free" games that I've downloaded as part of the Plus program.  I'm not sure if it's because of the outage & not being able to log in, or if it's just a weird coincidence that my Plus membership happened to expire at the same time that the network went down.  (Can't log in on the web either to see if that's the case.)
