Title: Ear Worms
Post by: Pak-Man on July 16, 2007, 02:13:20 AM
Well I"m going through the second consecutive day of having They Might Be Giants' "Brain Problem Situation" running through my head, so I thought I'd post the question to all y'all:

What's playing on loop on the MP3 Player in YOUR head right now?

Mew, "Circuitry of the Wolf".

There's this bone-crushing bass, guitar, 'n' choir part that follows me wherever I go.

I don't mind, though, because it's freakin' awesome.

Still, hon? We saw that show on Sunday. I can't believe that four days later you've still got that in your head.

For me this week it's been "The Touch" as sung by Dirk Diggler.

ETA: Also, "Hey Ladies" by the Beastie Boys. Cannot get that song out of my head today.

The other day I posted the lyrics to "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship on the blog.  I don't remember why, but it seemed funny at the time.  Now I'm paying a terrible price and have that song stuck in my head HARDCORE.  I blame Meshach Taylor.  Damn you, Hollywood Montrose!

Went to a bar I didn't want to go to last night and the band playing has now wedged "Wanna put my tender heart in a blender, watch it spin around into a beautiful oblivion... rendezvous then I'm through with you" in my brain. Considering putting a drill bit right into my head to get the song out of there.

Now a woman who'll kiss on a very 1st date,
Is usually a hussy,
And a woman who'll kiss on the second time out,
Is anything but fussy,
But a woman who'll wait 'till the 3rd time around,
Head in the clouds, feet on the ground,
She's the girl he's glad he's found,
She's his Shipoopi.

Shipoopi, Shipoopi, Shipoopi,
The girl is hard to get.
Shipoopi, Shipoopi, Shipoopi,
But you can win her yet.

For 24 hours now. Over and over and over....

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man long the way,
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, Hurry boy, It's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have

Over and over and over...

I'm guessing that this is a completely obscure band by now... bought this album used during the indie record store heyday of the early/mid 90s...  the lyric "I know where you live... and I know you're on your own.." popped back into my head and would not leave... which is kinda fucked up, but qualifies as an ear worm... right? But anyways... After a good two days of trying to remember the name of the band, I found the video on youtube. It was a surprisingly good album overall from what I remember, despite some self-loathing stalker lyrics that would make John Hinckley blush.

and of course the video is a treat with some Jacob's Ladder shaky head bullshit that will never fail to freak me out...

http://www.youtube.com/v/UZYROCPg3Ww?version=3&hl=en_US

EDIT: Just looked on Wikipedia... and these guys are still around and have released a bunch of albums since this one... and it lead me to another song from them that I always enjoyed from an earlier album... but with an equally fun and fucked up 90s video... I don't mean to rant, but it is a Thursday night leading into a vacation, so I've been drinking some beer... and dammit... I miss the days of walking into the local indie record store and asking my trusty clerk for whatever good shit came in used that week... I bought probably 6-8 used... err, previously owned, albums a week for a good five years... Such a great way to get exposed to new music... even if 75% of it sucked and was sold back the following week at a 50% loss. Fuck you Apple and/or that Justin Timberlake douche that invented Napster.... I would have never heard Teethgrinder growing up in 2012... well, maybe I would have... but fuck you Steve Jobs!!!

Yeah, I had to buy that version from amazon when the riff came out, I think I already had 2 different DVDs of it at that point but neither were the right one.

Is it wrong that I still have that song memorized after all this time?  Kevin does do a mean Randy Newman impression, guess it really stuck in my head.

Not sure why I have it stuck in my head now, since I haven't watched an 80's Dan episode in a while. I hope he makes another one of those soon.

Been over at Tracy and Tristan's, and Tracy's been watching this to see if it's all the same remain convinced it's horrible torture us while he does his treatments. Every single piece of music in this god damned show is this song, without words. EVERY. FUCKING. PIECE. It won't go away. Not even Gangnam Style has been able to remove it.

Last 3 days the theme to Coupling keeps popping into my head.  Haven't watched the show in a while, maybe that's why, time to get out the DVDs and watch some episodes.

Well, Psy has been following me around all week.  SNL, Starcraft, Mythbusters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvSJr9jvVyc&feature=youtu.be) and elsewhere too.

I'm not inflicting him on anyone else though.

Pave paradise, put up a parking lot....

The riff for The Expendables planted the seed, now this week every time I look out my bedroom window and see the empty lot that used to be all big trees, it keeps getting reinforced.  This could be a long term one for me.

There are many, MANY worse things to like. She's the least offensive whatever her classification is to my senses.

Probably a different strokes/folks thing, but I find that remix pretty damn awesome. Maybe because  the original song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64liF2VuLxI) is pretty neato.

Right now my brain is going back and forth between "Jubilee Street" from the new Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds album (Sorry about that homemade Rifftrax/YouTube thing from years ago) and "We Don't Need Another Hero" by Tina Turner from the "Thunderdome" soundtrack. They both have similar grooves to them, and my mind will not let me forget this during times when I want it to shut up for once.  :grr:

He's so great at changing his style greatly and still being him.  Heathen is great.

So far I've only listened to Aladdin Sane, Hunky Dory, Low, Ziggy Stardust and The Next Day,  and they've all been great. I'll buy Heathen next.

I'd actually recommend Let's Dance next.  I do love Heathen, but outside of Next Day, you seem to be going chronologically.

It has the classic Let's Dance, but it also has Cat People (best known for it's use in Inglorious Basterds, despite being written for the 1984 Cat People remake) and Criminal World.

What I don't recommend is the ironically titled Never Let Me Down.  I guess this one has a reputation for not-goodness, but I learned how disappointingly dull this one first hand. I do have a soft spot for "Glass Spider", but that's because I have a weakness for song stories (Re: Spinal Tap's Stonehenge or Gorillaz "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head")

Not on purpose! I was told to get Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust, the rest were (excluding The Next Day) "Hey, I know a song or two from this one"

Funny that you say Let's Dance, I was previously told to avoid the 80's. I plan on getting every album eventually though.

Let's Dance is really good.  It's not his best, but it has some great songs and even though it's relatively commercial compared to some of his stuff, it's also pretty darn good.  But yeah, the 80's also gave up Never Let Me Down and that Dancin' in the Streets abortion with Mick Jagger.

It's wonderful and oftentimes surprisingly creepy.  That episode, though, is one of the shows "just plain silly episodes", which is very cute and funny.  Also, there are only 10 episode.  I watched it in one go and I rarely do that these days (I was a little cranky with my internet so it was a real pick me up).  The series has a ton of great music and if you like old-timey music (including American opera) you are in for a treat.

The Doodle Dome commercial.

I live about 45 miles from Busch Gardens Williamsburg, so I go there pretty often. There's one area of the park that plays this on a continuous loop (minus the lyrics) And EVERY time I hear it, in my head I'm thinking "It's Doodle Dome. It's Doodle Dome."

BTW, Can anyone tell me what the actual name of this song is, or who wrote it?

I've had a little 2 second snippet of music in my head all day, finally figured out what it was from, but have had no luck searching for what the song might be.

It's a random bit of music used in V For Vendetta, the song that is playing on the clock radio that wakes up the inspector the morning of V's big day.

Guess I might look through the credits but not sure they would bother including something only used for 1 or 2 seconds.

Pulled up the movie on Netflix and looked at the credits and it is listed.

Richard Hawley: Long Black Train

Funny, I had never quite picked out all the words before, but after listening to the song on YouTube it's so easy to watch that scene and hear those words.  And of course it's massive foreshadowing of what is to come...

Not sure it qualifies as a "ear worm" but I've spent the last couple of hours trying to find an album that my mom had and I played a lot when I was little.  Since it's instrumental didn't have any lyrics to go by I was searching by the style of music.

Had the one tune I liked the most playing in my head the entire time, finally found it:

https://www.youtube.com/v/UQcODywfdcM

I'm sure my mom picked it up because of the cover art, it was a style she panted in for a while during and after she was in art school.

There are a few used ones from Amazon sellers, under $10 including shipping so next time I order I'll pick one up.
