Title: One Good Thing
Post by: Junkyard on June 08, 2007, 05:03:49 AM
Okay, so this is going to be a practice in Optimism/Idealism.
I'll start by naming something, and you tell me just ONE GOOD THING about it. Then you yourself name something, the next person gives a good thing, and so on. This "thing" can be a person, a movie, a book, a concept, a building, a whatever. And try to come up with a sincerely good thing, just to make it more challenging.

Okay, I'm starting this thread with a hard one:
Pat Robertson

He has a very soothing voice, I bet he sounds lovely reading Goodnight Moon to his grandkids.

It encouraged Roosevelt to fund odd projects, which had the government backing a lot of Original American art and architecture, not to mention the artist themselves.

Anacondas 2: Hunt for the Blood Orchid  (I hate this movie so much. It stole two hours from my life.)

Er, it apparently gave the nerks at the IMDB board woodies all round for being "better than the first one" (that seems to be the consensus at IMDB weirdly).

The Black Death

Ooh, I just learned about this last semester-
It lowered the number of people, and thus the number of workers. Suddenly employers had to start making competitive wages. This meant a rise in the quality of life for the survivors of the Plague, and overall gave the concept of a "Middle Class" it's start. It also led to religious reform later on, a lot of scholors think.

Depending on your viewpoint, this may be a good thing: It encouraged various fringe Christian groups to either go mainstream or join together in resistance, that resistance eventually becoming the backers behind the Protestant Reformation.

He was so thouroughly evil that almost everybody can agree to hate him. It's rare to have someone who doesn't get the "He wasn't as bad as we made him out to be" treatment. (At least, convincingly.)

Hmmmm...
As language evolves and swears lose their potency, racial slurs will continue to stay vulgar, and those that don't are quickly replaced. Thus, we'll always have swears in reserve!

You can watch it with the muted and it will make as much sense as the movie up at full volume.  And there's Halle Berry in leather, which I'm sure is the reason most people went to see it, anyway.

By codifying and enshrining prejudice they brought to a head the simmering racial issues that the country had been dealing with since at least reconstruction and inspired an active civil rights movement by providing something concrete to push against (a concrete legal statute is much easier to fight than something unspecified like the attitude enshrined in said statute).
