Title: Those CBS Dickheads cancelled Jericho!
Post by: SecretAgentSuperDragon on May 16, 2007, 09:38:59 AM
One of my favorite TV series this year, with tons of fan support, and those insane executives and Les Moonvies over at CBS cancel it to makeway for..

get this... Kid Nation: A REALITY SHOW where kids are let loose in a NM town and try to create order?!?!?!!?!?!? ??? ??? ???

What the hell is wrong with these guys? And they're most anticipated Drama is basically a vampire looking for love in modern times called Moonlight. Didn't we get enough of that w/ Angel and Buffy?

Jericho was one of the most original shows to come out in a while. It was like Red Dawn, but thought out, and not cheesy, and actually showed what you expected if America was attacked. I can personally say, I will never watch that network again. Ever! They screw themselves over w/ advertisers by making the show available w/o commercials on Comcast On Demand and their own website 2 hours after it airs on tv. They are nuts! How can you expect a show to succeed w/ advertisers and ratings when you make it available on a more desireable medium? Didn't work for Black Donnellys, Vanished, Andy Barker PI, or Nights of Prosperity. It's basically a hangman's noose. They say that people are"shying away from Serial Dramas". That just means that people are becoming more retarded from viewing crap like Kid Nation you put on air. The death of storytelling is upon us as far as network tv is concerned. Only channel I'm watching now is FX. At least I know that they don't sacrifice their show's quality for meaningless crap.

I think people shying away from dramas more has to do with the over saturation of dramas on network television more than people being stupid....  though still partly because people are stupid, how many CSI's and Law & Orders can they actually follow?

CSIs, Laws and Orders, but what about the many medical shows: Grey's Anatomy, Grey's Anatomy Spinoff, ER, House. And all the murder ones, not including CSI like Cold Case, Without A Trace, Bones, about 10 others. And how many cop shows are there!?!?! I say we limit it to one specific genre a show.

Medical: House
Murder: Original CSI
Cop: The Shield
Nuclear Apocalypse Drama: Jericho
Stuck On an island drama: Lost
Anti-terrorism show: 24
Illegal Cross-Country Road Race Drama: Drive
Space Western: Firefly
Mockumentary comedy: The Office
Single Camera Non-laugh track comedy: Arrested Development
Stuck in Space 2 hour Serial Comedy: MST3K

And just cancel ALL reality tv shows.

I'm just gonna start reading more books.

This is exactly why I don't watch television anymore. I've seen too many good shows I was enjoying cut down before their time. It's DVD all the way now.

Here, here!  I just got and watched Pan's Labyrinth; I am a whole lot more happier than if I had to have spent that time watching tv.  Shoot, I won't have to worry about getting HD if I stick to good ole DVD.  A 1,000 dollars worth of good movies, rifftraxes, anime, manga, and books right there!

If I could have things my way... here's how TV would be

Murder: Columbo
Cop: Law and Order (First 5 seasons ONLY)
Stuck On an island comedy: Mork and Mindy (Well, technically isn't Earth an island?)
Anti-terrorism show: NCIS
Illegal Cross-Country Road Race Drama: World's Wildest police chases
Obnoxious laugh track sitcom: Married with Children
Social commentary comedy: South park
Non-laugh track comedy: Monk
Stuck in Space 2 hour Serial Comedy: MST3K
Laugh track sitcom about four senior citizens despite what Rue Mclanahan says: Golden girls

I signed, but if the Amish come knocking on my door trying to sell me applebutter, you will be in for it.

I used my real name since when I put in my email of "robertpreed@sbcglobal.net", it seemed kind of pointless to use a fake name!

Thanks Rob. Open up a fake email if you have to. I haven't gotten any spammers, and I've signed more than 1 online petition. It would've worked for Arrested Development if Hurwitz wanted to continue.

Jericho even had a quick nod on The Soup.

"Why did they cancel Jericho? That was a good show."

Why?   Cuz faux reality shows and lame skills contest shows cost nothing to produce while quality shows cost money.

Sigh, at least we have our rifftrax!

I watched the first half of the series, but after it came back i quickly lost intrest.

Still love Lost though.

I can't wait for Monk and Psych to get new episodes. Especially Psych. Funniest show on cable..

That was the problem. You can't start out a show in its first season rather new and untested, just to take it away for 3 months and see if people will still watch it when it comes back. I personally thought it was the end of the season back in December. Something's gotta happen. AD had less of an uproar than this did, and it almost made it to Showtime.

CBS totally killed this show with it's scheduling. But at least they gave it somewhat of a chance. Fox pulls stuff after a week or 2 sometimes. Drive, Harsh Realm, freakylinks, Lone Gunmen et al. Can you imagine what the 90s would have been like if they were as quick to kill then as they are now? The Truth is Out There would be some very, very obscure Tv trivia question rather than a cultural iconic phrase. Yet they continue to crank out So You Think You Can Dance and World's Craziest Cop Animal Chase Bloopers and Deaths.

and ps  CBS also killed the Class which actually wasnt a totally terrible sitcom.   Feh

"OK, this is nuts!

Multiple sources are telling me that CBS is thisclose to sealing a deal to bring Jericho back for at least eight episodes, possibly at mid-season.

My spies caution that this is in no way official, but it certainly sounds like it could be by day's end. It's now just a matter of signing the actors to new deals and, according to one insider, finding a new soundstage to house the show's sets.

To say this would be a huge victory for crazy TV fans everywhere would be the understatement of the frakkin' millennium.

Developing..."

is there some sort of inside joke those of us that don't watch the show are missing?

Quote
For weeks, "Jericho" junkies have been firing e-mails (effectively shutting down InBoxes at CBS and this newspaper), signing petitions and sending bags of nuts to CBS headquarters in protest.

also, according to this LA Times article, it seems pretty definite

Quote
When the fan fight to save the show would not let up, CBS began talks with producers about a two-hour movie that would wrap up the show, but the writers were not interested, Barbee said.

"We just felt like that was doing it short-shrift, and it's too big of a story to wrap up in a two-hour movie," she said. "I really think that what has been learned here is that networks are going to have to look at numbers and who is watching their show and who is downloading their show in a different way from here on out. I think they have to understand that the Nielsens are not telling the story anymore and that the 18-49 demographic they're all so keen on is online and that's how increasingly they are getting their news and entertainment."

Since the fan revolt began, "Jericho" viewers have insisted they also would not be satisfied with a TV movie or online re-cap that told them how the "Jericho" story ends.

If the actors sign on the dotted line -- and those deals should be in place in the next day or two -- Barbee said "Jericho" junkies will get their way.

From the front page of IMDb:

Quote
TV drama Jericho may have a future after all - the CBS network is reportedly reviewing its decision to scrap the show after a sustained internet campaign. Appalled by the decision to scrap the cult series last month, which follows the fortunes of a community trying to survive after a nuclear attack, superfan Jeff Knoll linked up with online company NutsOnline.com to let TV bosses know just what he thought of them. Other fans caught wind of Knoll's idea, and so far nearly 20,000 pounds (of nuts have been sent to various network executives in New York and Los Angeles. Talks with cast members are now reportedly under way, with a view to making seven more episodes. In a statement, Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, said the network had been "humbled" and was hoping "to develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the Jericho story."

I don't want seven episodes. I want at least 1 more season, if not 2.

Imagine the collective outcry if they announce:

"Yeah, we reviewed our decision, and we are still going to cancel it".

This sentence really makes the article:

"Several factors could work in the show's favor: It appeals to the young adult viewers sought by advertisers and was one of CBS' most popular shows streamed online, indicating an audience beyond that measured by traditional ratings."

Wouldn't it be awesome if CBS, normally the most traditional and staid of all the major networks, was the first to tell the ridiculous, dated and inaccurate Nielsen ratings system to go take a long walk off a short pier?

Imagine how many shows we would still have if they just tossed out the Nielsen's, and updated it with, I don't know, a signal bandwith detector, or something of the like.

THEY DID IT!!! THEY'RE BRINGING IT BACK!!! IT"S OFFICIAL!!

I am beyond ecstatic. I can't believed it actually worked. 7 more episodes ordered for fall 07. BYAAAH! And they're gonna rally interest by running reruns during the summer, releasing the 1st season dvd in september, and streaming all episodes online. So everyone: start watching! If you don't like it, I understand, but all I'm saying is give it a chance, you might get hooked, and not in a horrible Grey's anatomy kind of way.

Oh BTW: Here's the news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070606/ap_en_tv/tv_cbs_jericho;_ylt=Aunxe0ITxVe8Ag_YaujVpV8DW7oF

Indeed, I can't think of any other show that's been restarted like that, off hand.  I mean there's Family Guy, Futurama, Babylon 5, Firefly that were all been picked up for more in some way, but all of those were on the strength of their respective DVD sales for the most part. Doesn't sound like Jericho got that far.

You know, now that you pose the question... I don't. I think I'd rather have Rifftrax than MST3K at this point. Several more episodes in the space of a "Season," pick of any movie in the world to riff on, concept that allows for unique special guests. *Runs to cancel an order for 10 lbs of Gouda* :^)
