Title: Where is Ronald?

Sometimes going to the Macy*s Thanksgiving Parade pays off. We were right next to the Ronald McDonald balloon when the wind took it down, ripped it's foot off, and it met an untimely death as it was dragged off to a side street and deflated. Usually you go to a parade and nothing happens. The tragedy  reminded me of the original less annoying Ronald balloon, and the time I used it in a photoshopped picture. It was something I did just for fun over a decade ago on another website's forum. This was back when forums had just added the option to add images, and image hosting sites like Photobucket began to offer free accounts. I did one picture, someone requested I do another, and it ended up in it's own thread where I posted a new picture every week. By the time I reached 200 photoshopped images I decided to call it quits, even though the two active members still using the forum begged me to continue. It's a really stupid game, so here it is.

The rules are very simple. So I wont bother posting them.  Just look at each image and play along. I will try to post one image here every day instead of once a week.  As of 12/4/19 I am resizing the images to fit on the modern desktop screen, so mobile devices will only see part of the pictures. So you will need to download the images to your mobile devices in order to see them in full. Those with desktops may need to download to enlarge images.

NOTE: I Remember this one was made around the time the Super Bowl happened. A web search found a pic of President Ronald Reagan  throwing a pass ( or at least pretending to for a photo op )and another of Ronald McDonald playing touch football with his costumed friends, and they both edited into the picture perfectly.

GAME #9

This was actually planned to have been the final Where is Ronald photoshop. About 14 years ago I was a member of a fansite for a popular raunchy radio personality who had just made the move to Satellite. Despite not being the only fansite for this celebrity, it still had thousands of members, most who spent a lot of time on the website's forums.  Much like the forums here, that website didn't just discus the shock jock l, but had forums for other topics, such as sports, movies, television, general off topic, etc. One forum added was called "Photoshop". And you can imagine what threads the fans of this radio star started. Let me just give you an example of the tamer threads. There was one called Mary Poppins where participants were asked to photoshop Mary into stills from hardcore porn movies. Another called Family Circus had the family friendly captions under the cartoons replaced with offensive captions. And then there was the Where's Waldo thread, where the person who started it asked participants to photoshop Waldo into photos of horrific scenes, usually the aftermath of battles or disasters where hundreds of dead bodies were lying on the ground. About a few days into the thread, someone posted a photo entitled "Where is the Cookie Monster" with the muppet  hidden on an average street scene. This suddenly lead to the thread going way off topic with everyone posting their own "Where is..." photoshops with different characters. For example, one member made a bunch of Where's Dart Vader photoshops. Another did a lot of Where is Spock photoshops. And another a bunch of Where's Dr. House photoshops, and so on. Once the thread morphed, I was inspired to make my own "Where is" photoshop, and made the one with the parade. It was initially supposed to be a one time thing, but then came the positive comments. They liked how no one noticed Ronald Reagan was in the photo until someone pointed it out the next day, which was exactly what I was trying for. So naturally I did what anyone else would do, I posted more Where is Ronald photoshops, getting a lot more positive responses for the football one.

A few weeks later whatever novelty the thread had wore off. The thread had fallen off the first page a few times. I hadn't made a photoshop in over a week, and only went back because the idea of both Ronalds in the Sgt. Pepper album cover popped into my head.  But it was supposed to have been my final one. I was busy on other threads.  What I didn't count on was the new guy who took over moderating the forums, and had decided to go through all the trouble of fixing the hijacked threads. I wanted to see if anyone commented on the Sgt. Pepper photoshop, only to find when I got to the Photoshop Forums that the moderator had removed every photoshop from the thread that didn't have Waldo, including the one with Cookie Monster. He had gone through all the trouble of putting each into it's own new thread. So without me asking, all of my Where is Ronald photoshops were in it's own thread, along with every comment on it and a lot of new comments. Even Cookie Monster had it's own thread, even though only one photoshop with Cookie Monster had been made. I guess if you have a lot of spare time on your hands and you are a forum member, you waste it making photoshops. And I guess if you are a board moderator you waste your time splitting the threads up. Once Where is Ronald was suddenly on it's own, and suddenly getting brand new positive comments, I felt a bit obligated to make a few more photoshops. Next thing I knew I was making a new one every Sunday. The Darth Vader, Spock, House, and other threads were also active with new photoshops being made. Before I knew it, I had been posting weekly photoshops for a couple of years. By the time I reached the 200th photoshop I decided what I  should stop. Not only had all the other Where Are threads stopped by then, but the membership on the forums itself had drifted off to almost no one.  There were still a few active members left who were sort of friends, and occasionally commented on the photoshops, but except for it being a habit to make an post a new photoshop every Sunday at 11pm, there was no sane reason for that thread to still be there.

But back to the Sgt Peppers photoshop.  Once I began posting a new Where is Ronald every weekend, I started getting more elaborate, because I felt the Sgt. Pepper photoshop had raised the bar and I had to top it. I also decided I had to actually HIDE one or more of the Ronalds in the photo so it would be an actual challenge to find both. Part of that was because of the then recent death of Paul Rigby, the editorial cartoonist who was famous for hiding a tiny  drawing of himself and his dog in his cartoons. I had remembered how in grade school a friend would bring in day old copies of The Post and we would search for Rigby and his dog in the cartoons, sometimes taking the entire lunch period to find them. I had always considered Where is Waldo a blatant rip-off of Rigby's idea. So, whenever I could, I made the Ronalds very hard to find. Of course, some weeks I didn't feel like going through that much trouble and slapped together a photoshop within a few minutes where the Ronalds were easy to spot. But basically, from this point on the games actually get harder to near impossible.

This would have been an inside joke to the forums this was first posted on. Long before I remember anyone calling them memes, some of the members there would post pictures with captions. This one originally had the caption on the top "These are my girlfriends", and would get posted a lot in just about any thread. Much like the members who responded to threads with the single word FIRST! as the first person to respond to that thread, the early memes seemed to be attempts at humor that weren't the least bit funny, but never the less showed up way too often. Stuck for an idea as to what image to hide the Ronalds in next, I came across a thread where someone once again posted the TAMG meme for no reason. I don't recall this meme ever spreading outside of those forums, so only those of you who were members there way back when would get the joke.  I have censored the image a bit.

GAME #12

This was the first of the holiday themed games.  It was  the week of St. Patrick's Day, so I decided to photoshop the Ronalds into the parade.  Back then this was the best image I could find of the parade. Everything else was low resolution pictures, under 200 pixels in width. Finding pictures large enough to hide the Ronalds in was a big problem back then, so you used what you could. From this point on I would attempt to theme photoshops on the major holidays they were released near. Sometimes.

GAME #16

This one was made on Easter Sunday, and since I had decided any photoshops made on the weeks of a holiday would be themed, decided that I would use a photo of the famous Easter Parade. The event sprang up on New York City's Fifth Ave in the late 1800s. At the time the rich preferred living in the area between 42nd street and 59th street and built their mansions along that stretch of Fifth Ave. However, with the construction of Central Park, gradually began moving uptown to build their mansions along Fifth across the street from the park. By the turn of the century the area between 59th and 42nd was almost entirely abandoned by the rich, and their mansions sold off and torn down to make way for skyscrapers.  Their churches still remained in those neighborhoods, nd on Easter Sunday the wealthy would put on their best outfits for Easter service, with the warm weather allowing the ladies to stroll down the street without wearing a thick coat so they could show off their newest expensive dress.  Flamboyant hats also became a fad, usually adorned with exotic feathers. Easter Sunday became the first day of the year for the rich to show off their wealth via their outfits as a way of bragging. They were seen as celebrities, and Newspapers reported on their outfits the same way they report on red carpet outfits of award shows today. They began calling it the "Easter Parade" in their headlines, however, it was no actual parade, and the rich never walked as a group, but rather as individual couples, only gathering in front of the cathedrals to bee seen and to have the press snap pictures of them in hopes they would be chosen as the women featured on the front page of newspapers and magazines as the example of best dressed. The event had faded out of fashion by the time Irving Berlin wrote the song Easter Parade in 1933 for a musical review about the famous rich set in the early 1900s. The song became so popular it spawned a movie in the 1940s. With the rise of the middle class after the second World War, they began turning up on Fifth wearing their own costumes as the popular song suggested. It quickly went from an informal event to teeming with crowds of participants, and the city responded by closing off Fifth Ave to traffic and allowing everyone to wander up and down the middle of the street, which has lasted to this day.

And none of that could be found on the internet as images. Pictures of the parade were either useless snapshots of individuals, or shot from the roofs of buildings with participants looking like ants, or low resolution pictures smaller than 100 x 200. At the time this was the best picture of the Easter Parade I could find in two hours of searching.  You wouldn't even know it was supposed to be the Easter Parade unless I mentioned it here. I am sure some better pictures of the Easter Parade have shown up on the internet since, but in 2005 this was the best available.

So far I spotted them all.  #15 gave me the most difficulty.

These are still the easy ones.  When I began making a new one every Sunday I gradually began making it harder and harder to find one or both Ronalds, although the one scheduled to be posted tomorrow is too easy. But there are some people accused me of not hiding any Ronalds in until I gave them the location. And there are a couple with fake Ronalds.

I tried to make ronald mcdonald black and white for a different pic but I couldnt figure out how to do it.  Can you post that?

That is something I can't do any more.  The Windows Paint that came with Windows XP had a glitch that when you copied an image over a black and white jpeg, it would turn the image pasted over it black and white. The new Windows Paint for Windows 10 and up no longer has that glitch, and it also removed most of the useful tools like invert colors and the ability to cut out an image from a picture by outlining it. I suggest typing "turn images black and white" into your search engine and try to find a free site that will convert the image black and white. But be prepared for that site to add a watermark you will need to remove. I do that by creating a larger image, pasting the image you want converted onto the upper left corner, converting, then cropping off the rest of the image and watermark.

GAME #17

Out of all the Ronald photoshops, this one was the laziest. I can't really remember why I wasn't into it that week, only that it was going on midnight and I hadn't yet made that Sunday's photoshop. I didn't even have any idea as to what image they would be hiding in. Only that I remembered I hadn't made one as I was taking the trash to the curb and less from an hour from my usual Sunday night bedtime.  And I was thinking I had some sort of obligation to do something for the week, just because I had done one many weeks in a row. Sundays were spent listening to podcasts on my PC, during which I also passed the time playing free online games, searching for stuff on the internet, perhaps doing a little shopping on Amazon, and making that week's photoshop. Perhaps I put the photoshop off because the previous week, when I didn't really have any PC downtime due to company being over for the Easter holiday, I ended up spending a couple of hours trying to find a usable picture of the Easter Parade. That ended up being the opposite of fun, especially when the image I settled on had to be blown up. looked like crap because of it, and didn't have any good places to put either Ronald.  Now I was about 20 minutes away from midnight and trying to get a photoshop done before that self imposed deadline. So I thought "F@#k it! I'll just find an image of a modern art painting and slap both Ronalds anywhere! Done in less that ten minutes!"  Also, you can blow a low resolution modern art image up without any noticeable artifacts, unlike blowing up small resolution photographs which end up looking like pixilated blurs. The one I ultimately picked was chosen because it had a lot of solid colors.  While I call the "Where is Ronald" pictures Photoshops, none were actually made on any photoshop program, but rather in the free Paintshop  program that came with Windows XP, with some added effects made by putting parts of the image into the Windows Movie Maker. Pasting an image of Ronald into a pre existing image required cutting the background out of Ronald, then recutting a second image of the foreground and pasting it over Ronald whenever Ronald was standing behind something. Then you needed to clean the final results up, because there was still some residual remnants of the rest of the original background from the Ronald image. This meant using the draw tool and the eyedrop tool, then retouching every pixel surrounding Ronald. Solid colors meant less time using the eyedrop tool, and an easier time touching the picture up. I was able to finish this photoshop in record time, although I can't remember if I actually uploaded it to the forum before midnight. I do recall feeling embarrasses at how half-assed it was, and as a result the next couple of weeks were more elaborate than usual.

These were all originally made on higher resolution photos. I then uploaded them to an image hosting website which won't be mentioned here, but was the one that sent a cartoon image of a frog whenever they decided they didn't want to "hotlink" to websites that didn't pay them to host images, even though I had a paid account. What a bunch of a$$holes.  Before they started demanding ransom from forums, they were a reasonable image hosting site where the image always fit the forum, and if you clicked it would automatically expand to original size. I put all of my photoshops on the site, and never bothered to back them up. That was about a dozen computer crashes ago. Anyway, one day I wanted to show the "Where is Ronald" games to friends at work, and the site they were on was blocked by the work computers. So I decided to move them all to a Yahoo group, but then found out the only copies left of the entire run was still in my old  frog people account. Then I found out that frog people decided that they didn't want to pay for extra servers when their old ones got full, so decided to take all the high resolution images stored on the site and reduce them by 50%. So basically, most of the "Where is Ronald" photoshops are half their original resolution. This especially sucks on the ones I put a lot of work in, where details I spent hours perfecting are now blurs. There are a few where something hidden is blurry. But not the case in this picture.

I had a lot of pictures of both Ronalds banked with them doing various things so I could make them look like they were interacting with what was going on in the picture they were being photoshopped in.

GAME #50

Here is one that is an in-joke to the forums it was originally posted on. Keeping up with having holiday themed photoshops, this one was supposed to have been a belated Thanksgiving themed game. Belated because I had completely forgotten Thanksgiving was coming up, and this would have been posted on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I had already downloaded a bunch of pictures of cornucopias and was trying to figure how to hide characters in them, when I got a post asking if I had anything special planned for my 50th game. It wasn't just Thanksgiving that snuck up on me. Somehow this really dumb thing I was doing had reached the milestone of 50.  I wasn't the only one doing this, but the only one who was still doing one every week instead of randomly., and was about ten pictures ahead of anyone else. I came up with the idea of paying tribute to all the other members who had active photoshop threads by  photoshopping   their characters into the cornucopia, But it just didn't work.  For reasons I no longer remember, everyone had photoshopped their characters into pictures of  deserts full of cactuses as a running joke.  So I decided as a tribute to do my own cactus scene.  Joining the Ronald's are characters from Where is Bianca? ( at the time was one of the popular pin-up models who had a lot of her pictures posted on the site ), Where's Doctor House?,   Where is Spock?, Where is Batman?, Where is ____? ( name  withheld and I have blurred his face. One of the members photoshopped himself into his pictures ), Where's Darth Vader?, Where is Jennifer?, Where is Superman?, Where's ma Dawg?, Where is Samantha Fox?, Where's the Wizard of Oz?, Where is Fey? ( a singer popular on Spanish radio ), and Where is the Heat Miser?. Missing is Cookie Monster, Waldo and The Hulk, who had not been active in nearly a year. Not too long after posting this photoshop, the other Where is.... threads became permanently inactive.

This was made for Easter. Like I said, trying to find high resolution images that fit the holiday being celebrated was usually impossible ( with exception to Christmas which had a wealth of images. ) I remember that year searching for "Easter" on Google Image, and this was the best I could find. A picture of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, from a website promoting travel to Rome on Easter Sunday. found a lot of images of Easter eggs  that had nowhere to hide anything, and Easter baskets that were too low res to be used. And I liked the Trevi fountain a lot because it had a lot of good places to hide Ronalds. So I decided to use it, and then use the magic of Photoshop to make the image Easter themed.

GAME #75

From this point on I began using a lot of pictures of Coney Island. Believe it or not,  in the summer of 2006 Coney Island was in danger of being completely demolished and replaced with condominiums for the rich. ( It was worse than that.  One version of the so called resort town that would replace the rides would privatize the boardwalk from Ocean Parkway street to 21st Street ( The distance from the handball court on the far side of the aquarium to the new amphitheater blocks west of the Parachute Jump, ) which would most likely mean either making the beach in front private, or at the least cut off public beach access for that distance. What happened was that Mayor Bloomberg announced that the city had a plan to revitalize the island by changing the zoning regulations on the abandoned lots west of the baseball stadium and on the north side of Surf Ave from amusements only to residential so condos could be built, and the rest of the area where the amusements are to be turned over to a single developer for a single amusement park. ( If you want to call it an amusement park, It would have been mostly a bunch of buildings which would have a movie theater, a bowling alley,  and a lot of upscale restaurants and food markets. They were also talking about lawns, reflection pools, skateboard parks, gardens, and a lot of areas in the park not used for rides.  ) But then a very greedy developer bought up half the property in the area Bloomberg said the amusement park would go, demanded to be the developer for the entire island, and said the resort he wanted to build would be entirely residential buildings and hotels with a mixture of amusements and retail on the ground floor of the buildings. He had half the rides torn down, so that when you exited the terminal there was nothing but vacant lots between the train and the beach. The developer kept claiming that the ground level would still be amusements, but then began making statements to the press that for most people, stores are amusements. I remember at one point he announced he would be turning the vacant lots into an amusement park, and when it opened it was just four or five bouncy houses on a six acre lot. Very pathetic. Then the next year he turned it into something called "The Amazing Seaside Fair" or something like that, which turned out to be a large tent with a cheap flea market inside. He tried to prove he was pro-amusement again by buying Astroland, but then closed Astroland and replaced it with a traveling fair, then for no good reason had the fairgrounds padlocked over the Labor Day weekend. And that is just a fraction of the crap that happened. And Bloomberg gave into this fool by changing the rezoning plans into a compromise that would mostly allow him build his so called resort but would require the retail be something called "entertainment retail", and amazingly the greedy developer turned that offer down. So instead there was a stalemate that went on for years. The whole time everyone was wondering if Bloomberg would completely give in to the developer, and it would be the last summer Coney Island had rides. ( And by Bloomberg giving in, I mean this developer had the entire city council in his pocket and they were all pressuring Bloomberg into allowing the developer to build his resort. ) So since this drama was being played out in the newspapers all the time, it ended up inspiring a lot of the "Where is Ronald" games. The good news is Bloomberg didn't completely back down, and some sort of financial setback forced the developer to sell much of his property back to the city where it was then leased to the ride developers Zamperla, So I guess you can say Bloomberg saved Coney Island? If you ignore that his rezoning plan was what lured in the developer in the first place, and did offer a compromise that would have destroyed the place.

This one was made for July 4th.  This time around I had thought I had a good idea for a picture. The Annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. All tat week I thought of having the Ronalds stuffing their faces next to  Takeru Kobayashi. Perhaps having McDonald eating hamburgers and a judge trying to disqualify him.  Or perhaps just having him vomiting. I would probably need to do a search for some new images of the Ronalds to find something that looked like they were eating. Then Sunday night came, and I realized there were no good pictures on the internet of the contest. The wallpaper sized images wee extreme close ups of the contestants, and the only pictures of the entire stage were very small. After about an hour of searching, I settled on this picture of Nathan's. It may not have had the contest,  but at least it was big enough to hide characters in.

GAME #100

And then I reached the milestone  of the 100th photoshop. By this time all the other "Where Is" threads were long dead. But as you can see, I was going overboard with my thread. I still felt obligated to submit a ne one every week, and at the time I was actually having fun doing them. Well, on most Sunday nights, and as long as it wasn't one of those weeks I couldn't find a suitable high res picture to hide them in. But realizing I had reached 100, I decided another celebratory photoshop was necessary. I wanted everyone I had hidden in the past 100 games to stand on stage at the Hollywood Bowl and take a bow ( or at least wave to the audience, as finding pictures o any of f them bowing turned out to be impossible. ) Unfortunately, the only high res picture of the Hollywood Bowl taken from this angle, was this one, taken during the day without an audience. I attempted to photoshop a crowd into the seats, but realized there were almost no photographs of an audience from the back, and the few I had found the camera was focused on the stage with the audience a blur.  also, the Bowl is large enough that you see a curve in the seating, so I would also need to find photographs from different angles. And they would need to be in color, and taken during the day.  So I gave up on that idea, and left everyone to take a bow ( wave ) at an empty stadium. Everyone to the left were past hidees, and everyone to the right were in the current photoshops. Going from left to right, Where's My Dawg, Satan Dawg ( both in-jokes from that forum ), Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny ( no, not the Ice Cream Bunny ), Uncle Sam, Christopher Columbus, The Wicked Witch of the West, The Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, Birdie The Early Bird, and somewhere well hidden both Ronalds.

Like I said, these are lower resolution copies of the original ones. And in this case, the lower resolution has made this photoshop impossible to solve as one of the Ronalds is now a blur. The original photoshop, which I wish I still had, you could clearly see the Ronald. So I have to apologize for this one. It is still possible to find him, but then you would be making a wild guess as to if the blur you found was the missing Ronald. But here is his location...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

BTW, this was also the Easter game. By this time I had given up trying to find themed holiday pictures, so instead began adding something to the photoshops to make them holiday themed.

GAME #150

I had another milestone coming up. The 150th photoshop. At this point I was the only one doing it. Back at #100 I had a lot of enthusiasm with the Where Is Ronald? games. I had even begun adding characters to the point where almost the entire cast of supporting mascots from the McDonald commercials were among the hidden, as well as a mascot from the previous holiday. Then the hectic holidays came along and where I would spend the entire Sunday afternoon listening to podcasts and gradually plotting building that week's photoshop, suddenly my Sunday Afternoon was spent helping the family decorate and shop and other things, while I would end up all night and early into the morning trying to complete a photoshop with more than ten characters trying to hide. Wanting to take a break, I ended that with the Christmas photoshop, and for the next few weeks was even lazy about hiding the two Ronalds. Some weeks I would feel adventurous and hide an extra random character or two, but I was mostly bored with the entire thing and constantly contemplating just stopping. It was no longer a hobby to pass  the time, but an odd sense of obligation. Strangely enough though, by the time #150 rolled around I had suddenly found more enthusiasm. It came from one of the news websites I checked every morning. Among the headlines was always an article "Today In History" highlighting a historic event that happened on that day, along with a picture of that event. And when you downloaded the image, it was always high resolution. This solved my biggest problem of finding a high resolution image for that week, and offered plenty of historic events that the two Rondalds could photobomb. I was having some fun again doing the photoshops. Well, that is until the website stopped doing the "Today In History" feature by December of that year. So anyway,  by the time the #150th Game rolled around, Around  the time I made #148I decided it needed another special photoshop for #150. Something with every character I had photoshopped in the past, along with anyone who was in the original images being photoshopped, and all the characters from the other now defunct photoshop threads. I began to realize there were just too many to put in any available image, and ten came up with the concept you see below.  But it would need a lot more characters to fill out the page. So I asked the other members to suggest any character they wanted to be photoshopped into #150. I got a lot of suggestions, including a lot of web models that were popular at the time. I also included a bunch of stock photos headshots of nameless persons to fill out the sections that would be covered up too much by the "Where Is Ronald" logo.

This was obviously inspired by Grand Theft Auto IV which had just been released a couple of weeks earlier.  GTA IV had been a big topic on one of the message boards I was a lurker on. This was around the time developer Joe Sitt was threatening to destroy half of Coney Island ( Bloomberg having already passed rezoning and removal of park designation  guidelines that destroyed the other half. ) One of the Coney Island message forums was active with activists trying to save the storied amusement area from being turned into a row of condos and upscale retail stores designed to draw upscale tourists to the beach, and drive off the poor and middle class tourists who were considered by the city to be riffraff. ( sorry to go off on a tangent about Coney Island, but I just saw a movie yesterday that was filmed there while this was all going on,  and it reminded me about those years. ) One of the hot topics on the forum was GTA IV because Firefly Island was molded after Coney Island, and it had a lot of the same buildings and rides that still existed. So there was a lot of interest in seeing GTA IV and comparing Firefly Island to the real thing. Also, my friend with the PlayStation bought the game, and it immediately became one of my favorites. And if that didn't put the game on my radar, it became a recurring bit on Late Night with Conan Obrien ( see below ). This was just about the best resolution screen cap I could find at the time. Not really suitable for a Where Is Ronald game, but I was determined to do one with a GTA IV theme.

This is the Mermaid Parade, an annual event at Coney Island which is postponed this year, but CIUSA has vowed it will happen some time this year.  The Mermaid Parade was a revival of the Mardi Gras  parade, which ended in the 1950s. The Mardi Gras parade was held months after Mardi Gras ended, on Labor Day weekend, due to the fact it is still winter in the Northeast during the actual Mardi Gras. The Mermaid Parade began in 1983 by the  organization CIUSA as a revival of the Mardi Gras parade, but moved to the opening of the season, and given the name change because by the 80s the Mardi Gras parade was associated with women flashing their breasts for beads, so the city council would not allow the same thing to happen in NYC. Ironically, many women participating in the Mermaid Parade wear topless mermaid costumes. I cant remember if this was the actual 2008 Mermaid Parade, but the picture was taken during the years developer Joe Sitt was actively destroying the amusement district in order to pressure Bloomberg into allowing him to replace the ruins with condos. The building with the red roof is the historic Grasshorn Building, which was Coney Island's oldest surviving building dating back to the early 1880s. You can see billboards for Thor Equities, Joe Sitt's company, on the building claiming they are "For Lease".  Actually, the entire block had active businesses that leased the ground floors year round, and there was a hotel on the top floor, all which Sitt evicted once he bought up the block. Reporters tried calling the number pretending to be potential leases and found out none of the storefronts on that block were for lease. This after he did an interview claiming Coney Island was so run down he couldn't find anyone wanting to lease property there. About a year earlier he did a televised interview with WNBC where he brought them to a block that had a lot filled with school busses and complained that there were school buses where rides use to be. It turned out Sitt owned the block, had an amusement park on it evicted, demolished it's mini golf course, then contacted the school bus company and offered them a cheap lot to lease. Currently the Grashorn Building is in the process of being demolished, put on hold only because of COVID-19.

This is Yankee Stadium. The original Yankee Stadium. Before he left office, Mayor Giuliani made good on another back door deal with millionaires George Stienbrenner and Fred Wilpon for donating to his mayoral campaigns. Both were promised brand new stadiums which would mostly be paid for by the city. When Bloomberg took office he attempted to void the agreement, but discovered Giuliani had changed the lease with both teams giving them a nuclear option that allowed them out of their respective multi year leases should the new stadiums not be built so they could make good on threats to remove the Yankees and Mets from New York City, as well as some further clauses in the deal making it impossible to void. This was the second back door deal with both team owners, the other for the city to provide the land and pay for the construction of two minor league stadiums, one on Staten Island for the Yankees, and the other in Coney Island for the Mets. The original Yankee Stadium was a historic landmark that dated back to 1923, and was known as the house that Babe Ruth built. It was also the stadium that Lou Gehring, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Marris, Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson had played, as well as the core team of the 1996-2007 seasons where the Yankees won four world series championships,  and where Don Larson pitched the only perfect game in World Series history. It was also where several motion pictures were shot, beginning with Buster Keaton's The Cameraman ( 1928 ), and including Big ( 1988 ). Of course, Yankee fans wanted the old stadium preserved as a landmark, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission under Giuliani denied landmark status for both Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium, allowing for the demolition of both. 2008 was the final season both teams played in their stadiums. About the time I made this photoshop, it became official that neither the original Yankee Stadium or Shea Stadium would be preserved, and were both marked for demolition after the season ended.

This is Shea Stadium. It wasn't around as long as Yankee Stadium, opening in 1964, but was every bit as historic. The powerful bureaucrat Robert Moses had wanted a stadium built at Willets Point as far back as the late 1940s. He had dreamed of building his own signature park in New York City that would be comparable to Central Park and Prospect Park, and chose the Flushing River Basin, a tidal river which ran through a valley that stretched from Flushing to Jamaica. The shores of the river were mostly polluted swampland, having been what all the towns along it been using for their dumps and area where their untreated sewage emptied into. In addition, the city had turned the upper swamp into a massive city dump where the sanitation department brought the city's trash, burned it, and dumped it into massive piles of ash. Beginning in the late 1800s, factories had been built along the river in Flushing, who dumped their waste directly into the river. Robert Moses planned to close all the dumps and sewage outlets, dump fill on all the swamps turning them into fields, and  fill in the river, preserving two sections that would become lakes. This took place throughout the 1930s, but because of the Great Depression, the city didn't have the money to build Moses' dream park on the site. In the late 30s he took the fundraising into his own hands by organizing the 1939 Worlds Fair in the Corona section of the park.  The fairgrounds and pavilions cost the city billions to build, which the revenues from ticket sales to the fair were suppose to pay for, and eventually generate extra revenue for the building of the park. But then World War Two broke out an the fair was forced to close a year early, with the city still millions of dollars in the hole for building the fair grounds. Trying to find a new way of generating money for the park, Moses proposed building a sports arena in the undeveloped Willet's Point section of the park, and use the revenues generated by the sports teams to pay for the park. However, none of New York's professional teams would agree to relocate to the heavily polluted area, especially since Moses had built both LaGuardia and Flushing Airport nearby and even the pre-jet age planes of the 1940s caused a lot of noise. In the late 50s both the Giants and Dodgers were looking for bigger stadiums. The owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Walter O'Malley, wanted the new Dodgers Stadium built in Brooklyn, and had even leased a site from the Long Island Railroad to build his new stadium. ( which is the exact site where Barclays Center is today. ) Determined to build an arena in Flushing Meadows Park, Moses blocked O'Malley from building his stadium, and told both he and the owners of the Giants and Yankees they would have to play at the city owned Flushing arena if they wanted a bigger venue, because he would allow no other stadiums to be built in the city. Both the Dodgers and Giants decided to move their teams to California instead.

After the loss of both the Giants and Dodgers, a new baseball team was created to replace them, The New York Metropolitans, a.k.a. The Mets. Initially playing at the vacated Gian Stadium, the Mets were given little choice but to move to the arena Moses wanted built in Flushing. In addition, the football team The Titans were also pressured to move to the new arena. With two professional teams agreeing to play in Flushing, Shea Stadium was built. After moving there, the Titans changed their name to The Jets, both to sound similar to The Mets, and because of the overwhelming sound of low flying jet planes taking off from LaGuardia every five minutes that plagued the stadium during games. In addition to revenues from ticket sales, Moses also organized a second Worlds Fair in 1964. However, the 1964 Worlds Fair managed to loose even more money than the 1939 fair, and Moses never got to turn Flushing Meadow Park into his dream park. To this day the second lake remains an undeveloped swamp.

The Mets hosted two of the most memorable World Series  games at the stadium, including the 1969 miracle  season, and the 1986 championship where the Mets stayed alive to win the 7th game after Bill Buckner allowed what should have been the game ending ball to bounce between his legs in game 6.  Aside from being the home stadium of both the Mets and Jets, Shea was the site of the historic Beatles concert of 1965, and was the site of several historic concerts to follow, including one of the final concerts in what was then The Who's farewell tour. Just as with Yankee Stadium, efforts were made to preserve Shea Stadium as a designated landmark, which Giuliani blocked. The final decision not to save both Yankee and Shea stadiums came in the summer of 2008.

GAME #191

Every time an Olympics air, I make up my mind way before hand that I am not going to watch them, because these aren't even sports I follow. Even way back during the Cold War I had initially intentionally avoided the Olympics, because I could not care less if the U.S.A. got more medals than  the U.S.S.R.  I always thought the American Olympics Team, being mostly government funded, was a form of communism. If it was capitalist, then the entire team would be financed by Wheaties and other sponsors, and the smaller events like water polo and curling wouldn't even be sponsored at all, because Americans don't even watch those sports. I thought it was incredibly dumb that America was proving they were  better than the communist countries with the medal count, via a form of communism.  When the Olympic Games of both the Summer and Winter roll around, I look forward to two and a half weeks of taking a break from television as nothing new is ever counter programed against the Olympics, and everything is in reruns. But then the hype, coming mostly from the host network, begins to work. So I watch the opening ceremony, even though you get to that too damn long parade of athletes which lasts a good two hours with nothing interesting ( no marching bands, no floats, no balloons ) to break up the tedium. But then I usually begin ignoring the games, at least for the first week. But by the final week I am watching every game, even events for sports I didn't know existed, and have no plans to ever watch again.

The hype for the 2008 Summer Olympics was in overdrive. And much of that hype was aimed at an athlete named Michael Phelps, who was on the verge of breaking the records held by Mark Spitz, one of the few athlete names I remembered from childhood, and only because it sounded like the announcer was saying a guy named mark was spitting. Phelps was a swimmer, a sport I really could care less about. But once again, the hype worked, and eventually I was watching every race he was in to see "history being made". There were no high resolution pictures of any of the races, otherwise there would have been one with one of the Ronalds and Grimace racing him, and the other Ronald cheering from the side. But I did eventually find this high resolution picture of the pool before the event. In retrospect, I think I may have replaced Phelps with Ronald in the photoshop.

Here we have the stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. NBC, the network airing coverage,  had been hyping the Olympics up all that month, including having their Today Show broadcast live from outside of this arena every morning. Or 6pm to 9pm in the evening Beijing time. By the time the ending ceremony rolled around, NBC had mad the fa├žade this arena iconic.   At least enough for a High Res image to exist online.

When the Olympics finally came to a close, there was still two more weeks of television preemptions due to coverage of the presidential conventions. First up was the Democratic National Convention where Barack Obama became the first African American to win a nomination as a presidential candidate. After eight years of what was then considered a disaster of a president, George W Bush, the Democrats were eager to win the Whitehouse back. They had tried four years earlier with the safest candidate they could muster, John Kerry, but still lost against a president who half the country believed was illegally installed in the previous election,  had gotten America into an endless war with Iraq with lies of WMDs, and was otherwise just as much of a disaster in his first term as he was in his second term. And yet, in what was being the most important election of all time, still Kerry lost.  The Democrats should have selected an even safer candidate for the next election, and had Hillary Clinton on deck, but instead decided to risk everything with a black candidate. Unfortunately I was unable to get any high res images from that historic convention, but did find this image from one of Obama's rallies.

The week after the Democratic Convention was the Republican Convention. Despite a backlash against George W Bush, the chances for the Republicans to win the Whitehouse again were pretty good  thanks to nominating war hero John McCain as their candidate. And then all of that was nullified with the selection of Sara Palin as the candidate for VP.  Once again I could not find a high resolution image from the Republican Convention, so chose a rally picture that came as close as I could to the  actual convention. With the Olympics and both conventions out of the way,  normal television returned just n time for the 2008 season, and the debut of Parks and Recreation, The Mentalist, Shark Tank, Fringe, and the celebrated reboot of Knight Rider. That is until the season was cut short by a writers strike.

GAME #195

I was a week late on this tribute. Astroland closed on Labor Day, but that was the week of the Republican National Convention.

Back in 1869 food peddler Charles Feltman , who leased land near the site, introduced his invention, a soft sausage in a bread bun called the Coney Island Red Hot. The new sack became a rage, and by 1871Feltman had enough money to purchase the entire block that would some day be Astroland. There he built a sprawling complex that included a huge dining pavilion and dance hall called Feltman's with an attached bathhouse and private beach. By 1900 Feltman's would include a roller coaster and other rides and attractions. Other snack bars and restaurants at Coney Island began serving their own Coney Island Red Hots, but under it's more popular name, the Hot Dog.  One of the chef's at Feltman's, Nathan Handwerker, left to open up his own hot dog stand blocks away next to where the city planned to build what would become the Stilwell Subway Terminal, calling his stand "Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs" even though no one had ever heard of him.  The Feltman family continued to run Feltmans before selling the complex to other investors in the 1940s. In 1954 Feltmans closed for good, and the land was put up for sale. At the time, Robert Moses proposed the city buy the site and use it along with the city owned blocks nearby for another housing project. Worried what would become of the historic site, Nathan Handwerker attempted to buy the property to relocate Nathan's Famous there. Bu what had ultimately bankrupted the original Feltman's  was the same thing that made his Hot Dog stand successful. It wasn't close enough to the subway terminal where all the hungry visitors debarked from the trains. Handwerker could not get any banks to lend him money for such a poor location.

Handwerker eventually got together a group of investors to bid for the site. The majority investor was Dewey Albert who owned 90% of the stocks for the LLC they formed. Moses had been foiled, and instead of using the city property for housing, relocated the New York Aquarium there. Not sure what to do with the property now that they owned it, Dewy allowed his son to demolish the bathhouse and replace it with a kiddie park. The rides were so successful, that when a fire destroyed most of the abandoned pavilion a couple of years later, Dewy Albert decided to turn the rest of the block into an amusement park. It was the beginning of the Space Race between the United States and Russia, so Albert decide his amusement park should have a space age theme. Astroland opened in 1962. A couple of years later Steeple Chase Park closed. Astroland became Coney Island's largest amusement park., and would act as it's anchor for the next 40 years.

The space age theme was eventually dropped, but the name stayed. When the city wanted to demolish the Cyclone for a parking lot, which was located in between the Aquarium property and Astroland, the Alberts intervened  and offered to pay for the restoration of the coaster, provided it became part of Astroland. The intervention save the Cyclone.  After Dewey Albert died in 1992, his shares on the Astroland site were evenly split between Albert family members, while his son continued to own and operate Astroland. In 2004 developer Joe Sitt attempted to buy Astroland from the Albert family, but only managed to get about 10% of the stocks for the LLP from  the families of the other investors, including the Hanwerker family who were promised by Sitt that  the site was to be used for an amusement park. At the time Bloomberg was pressuring property owners in Coney Island, most who were families who had held onto their properties since the 1800s,  to sell to developers so Coney Island could be redeveloped. Carol Albert hired a firm to design a multimillion dollar enclosed amusement park and presented City Hall with the proposal to redevelop their property. The city rejected the Albert's plan, and let them know that Bloomberg wanted a single developer to develop a single amusement resort over the entire amusement district. Faced with the possibility that the city was going to force them to sell their property anyway, and wanting to collect on the $60 million Sitt was offering for the remaining stocks, the Alberts had a family meeting where they voted on selling Astroland, and selling to Sitt won out the vote. Sitt had promised to continue leasing the Astroland site to the Alberts so Carol Albert could continue to operate Astroland, ad that Astroland would be offered a site inside his proposed amusement resort. Even though his plans to build condominiums in his resort had been outed, the Alberts decided their best chances of Astroland remaining open was to sell to Sitt  and hope he kept his promise. However, within a year Sitt was threatening to shut down Astroland if the city didn't expedite his demands to rezone the amusement district to allow condominium towers.  Astroland nearly closed for good in 2007, before Sitt's friend, councilman Domenic Recchia, got him to agree to lease Astroland the property for the 2008 season. As the season closed, the Alberts needed to know if Sitt would lease them the property for the 2009 season, because if not then they would need to start breaking down the rides immediately after Labor Day so they could be removed by January 1st. ( Any rides or structures still on the site when the 2008 lease ran out would become the property of Sitt. ) Throughout the summer Sitt  refused to give them an answer. As labor Day approached, Sitt claimed he wanted to use the site for something else the next summer. Astroland had no choice but to announce they would be closing for good, their final day of operation being Labor Day 2008.

Bloomberg tried to intervene.  He publicly asked the Alberts to warehouse their rides instead of selling them, because the city was not going to allow condos, and would try to get Sitt to sell his property. The only attractions that could not be broken down by the January 1st deadline was an observation ride called the Astrotower, the two story Dante's Inferno spook house and a giant water flume ride which at the time was the largest in the world. And the fence which surrounded the park with it's two gates. Also on the site was the last remaining structure from Feltmans which was said to be one of the kitchens, and a building near the entrance which was once part of a space age ski lift ride. Also on the site was George & Paul's, who had a block long food stand along the boardwalk on property they leased from the Alberts. On the roof of George & Paul's was two giant figurines and the Astroland rocket, a  rocket shaped motion ride that had been moved there after it had broken down in the 70s. George & Paul had already sold the business to Paul's daughter, and during the 2008 season it had been renamed Paul's Daughter. Even though Astroland had not been offered a 2009 lease, Paul's daughter had been offered a 2009 lease in late August. When Astroland closed for good, Sitt went to the press and claimed the Alberts had closed Astroland against his wishes, and he had wanted the park open in 2009. He then announced he had plans for an even bigger park on the site for the next summer. During the winter, the flume and Dante's Inferno were demolished. The ground was also needlessly torn up. The Feltman kitchen, the structure by the entrance, and the Astrotower were not demolished. The  better park Sitt promised was actually just a traveling carnival that was leased the site for the entire summer, and would not show up until mid July. The other half of the site was leased to a sideshow, the owner which got in trouble for yelling anti-Semitic jokes at an elderly Jewish patron of his sideshow, and throughout the summer had started trouble with or publicly insulted almost every business in the amusement zone. Since Sitt had needlessly torn up the blacktop and underground electric cables of Astroland ( and it's drainage ) the carnival that replaced it was forced t set up on  a lot of debris and puddles. Sitt named this amusement park Dreamland. On Labor Day weekend 2009, the owners of the carnival and sideshow found the gates to the site padlocked. A week earlier Sitt announced he wanted double the rent, which neither traveling show had yet. ( Sitt's lease for the site allowed his company to raise the rent whenever they wanted. ) Claiming Dreamland failed to pay their rent, hw ordered it closed for Labor Day, and also padlocked Paul's Daughter and businesses leasing from his other properties. Eventually Recchia talked Sitt into allowing the carnival and businesses to open for Monday. But that was the end of Dreamland, as Sitt was unable to find another carnival willing to lease from him again.

Paul's Daughter was not offered a 2010 lease, and announced they would be closing. On their final day they gave away all their food for free. That winter Sitt agreed to lease Paul's Daughter the site for 2010. Paul's Daughter is still there. Sitt was eventually pressured into selling the city Astroland and a lot of his other Coney Island property, this in trade of rezoning his remaining land for hotels that would have residential units. None of those hotels have been built, and currently Sitt's Coney Island property is on the market. Once the city owned the Astroland site again, they refused to lease it to the Alberts, but instead chose to lease it to Zamperla, who also got the lease to all the other properties the city acquired from Sitt. asking Astroland to warehouse their rides had been a publicity stunt for Bloomberg. The city even refused to lease the Alberts a vacant lot on another block for a scaled down version of Astroland. Carol Albert still continued to operate the Cyclone, until the city awarded  the franchise to Zamperla. In 2013 the city demolished the Astrotower and Feltman kitchen building, possibly because both became eligible for landmark status and could not be demolished once they won that protection. The city claims that they received a phone call from a worried beachgoer who witnessed the tower swaying in the wind. Today the Astroland site is called Luna Park. So far it has not opened this year because of the pandemic.

NOTE: THE WONDER WHEEL IS NOT PART OF ASTROLAND,  BUT ON A PARK NEXT DOOR.

GAME #200

It was another milestone, the 200th game. I knew it was coming up, and at least a couple of months before it arrived, I had decided it should be the final game. For one thing I had gone through periods where I really didn't want to do it any more but continued because I felt an obligation to, followed by periods where I was enthusiastic about the games. The week I made the decision to end the game was during one of the periods I wanted to quit. The 200th game seemed like a good ending point. Second, I had continued the game for so long because I was getting a lot of positive comments. But those comments began to wane by the 100th game, and were almost non existent by the 150th. And like any popular forum, it had gone from being very active with thousands of members a day, to about a handful of regular members still visiting on a daily basis.  Knowing the 200th game would be the last, I decided the theme should be everyone waving goodbye. This would be every character I had photoshopped onto existing images, and a the more prominent characters that were the subjects of images that were used for the photoshops. Well, almost everyone.

And that was it. I didn't mention on the site it would be the final game. Maybe a couple of days later a few members began to comment on how the games seemed to have stopped, speculating I may have been too busy or sick, and would be back in a couple of weeks. I answered them with a photoshopped picture of the Ronalds in a trash can combined with the words "GAME OVER" in large print. One member said he wanted to continue doing it, then a week later said he was working on one, and then we never heard from that member again. And after that the thread was dead. But because the site had low traffic, it took a few more months for it to actually drop off the first page of the forum's "Off Topic" section. And so this is my final game here as well, as these are only reposts of existing images and I feel no obligation to do any more. Just as with that original thread, anyone is welcome to continue posting their own photoshops, but I don't expect there to be many once everyone figures out how hard it is to do a decent one. So basically this is...
