Title: Season 13 Update
Post by: Compound on November 26, 2019, 02:09:06 PM
Straight from Joel:

Quote
Endings & Beginnings
As some of you might have guessed, we won't be making new seasons of the show for Netflix. However, I want you to know that we've had a wonderful time working with the Netflix team, and will always be grateful to them. After all, they gave us the opportunity to spend the past few years aboard the Satellite of Love, and made it possible for new generations to discover the joys of riffing cheesy movies with your friends.

I couldn't be more grateful or proud to our incredible cast and our wonderful crew for bringing this incarnation of the show to life, and hope that we'll get the chance to continue collaborating on MST3K as we enter our next chapter.

And, I'm pleased to confirm that The Return and The Gauntlet – along with a healthy selection of classic episodes – will continue to stream on Netflix, bringing some of the show's best episodes to cheesy movie lovers around the world.

Now, I know you might have questions about the future of Mystery Science Theater, but as you've seen over the last four years, we are just as dedicated to keeping MST3K alive as ever. And I want to remind you that there are still lots of options for us to explore in the years to come. This isn’t our first rodeo! So, while this might be the end of the first chapter of bringing back MST3K, don't worry: it's not the last chapter.

I suspect there might be additional info announced during the T-Day stream.  But we've brought it back before. We can do it again.

I'd say that language is a lot more optimistic than what we've heard in the past. The optimist in me says he's got a plan in his back pocket and it probably won't be another 18 years until the next iteration.

Hopefully with what Shout invested into the show, it won't be too long at all till it's up and running again.

Prime, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Peacock, CBS All Access. All of them need programming to compete. And MST3k is a pretty cheap show to run. Even places like Comet or Shudder might be an option. this is likely a setup, not the doom of the show.

Most of those are the doom of the show for people outside of the US. :P

And I thought having to spend the night in an airport was going to be the worst news I heard today.  Here's hoping, like me in this airport, we find a way to see another day, however bleak it may currently seem.

As sad as this is to hear, I prefer knowing for sure it's been dropped than wondering. And I would be surprised if another streaming service didn't pick it up.

Entirely depends on the service, but generally, yes, if you don't have a US credit card

Still have a U.S bank account so I think I would be able to buy any of these services. I subscribe to the Criterion Channel.

Maybe you will need to get a North America buddy to subscribe for you?

That is if Joel gets someone to pick it up. Any reason Shout TV can't do it?

The largest cash gathering in Kickstarter history...then the show gets cancelled after 2 seasons. Sad.

That part of it might have hurt it - ie, the backers all watched their VOD versions instead of watching on Netflix.

And Netflix has a numbers-based belief that most shows only 'need' 2 or 3 seasons and then the viewership drops right off.

Yeah. Considering Netflix's axing habits within the last few years, I'm not too surprised.  I mean, Tuca and Bertie was a critical darling (deservedly so.  Seriously, if you want Rocko' Modern Life for grown-ass women, watch it) but they didn't even give them a chance to establish an audience.

But at least Joel was smart enough to make sure that he can take the show elsewhere following the cancellation.  Of course, the hard part is FINDING that place.  I hope it happens.  Worse comes to worst, the live shows are going strong and maybe they can start selling those to us.

There's a lot out there right now that shows there's value in the MST3K brand. The various MST3K channels on streaming platforms seem to be super successful, Comet is bringing it back to their lineup, and IFC just picked it up as well. (They shoved it into a timeslot in the wee hours, but still...)

Oh, sure, but to what extent.  I mean, Comet isn't a big network.  Netflix is probably the biggest streaming service and a lot of the other ones I can think of aren't available everywhere.  Amazon Prime, maybe?

Anyway, I love MST3k and it is a strong brand but I feel like compared to a lot of TV, it is an odd beast in its movie length and rights issues and what have you.  I'm not saying it can't be done, I just really don't know what the next move is.  I kind of think since they have the rights, instead of a season they do a series of specials they release on their own a couple times a year.  They could make a deal with a service and both sell them direct from Shout Factory and have them appear on a streaming service for wider audiences.

If I were, I would have said Netlfix cancelling MST3K was fake news  ;D

If there is a next set of episodes, I'm sure it will take some time. After all, how many years was it between the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) era and Netflix?

So word on the street (The street here being Facebook strangers) is the cast of the MST Live show went to see Jonah's standup routine, and during a Q&A Joel indicated that they're definitely going to get to make more MST3K and Jonah is definitely down to participate in it. It's far from an official announcement, which will probably come after the tour winds down, but it's something.
