Title: E3 2019
Post by: Edward J Grug III on June 01, 2019, 05:32:30 PM
So, I'm pretty excited by this year's E3 - It really seems like Nintendo SHOULD have it in the bag this year.

They have a lot of announced games with not that much info out there, and surely some surprises up their sleeves.

So, here's what we know so far:

*After an Amazon leak, Ubi is showing off "Watch Dogs Legion" which is set in a "Post Brexit London" which will probably be the same as the current London but oh, wait, that wouldn't be alarmist. I guess instead you'll be fighting demons alongside Khadgar. Apparently you'll be able to play as any of the people in the game so if you've wanted to play as the random NPC on the street, here's your chance. This was apparently a thing in AC: Origins as well but didn't work too well there.

*THQ is announcing a new Darksiders game and a possible new Destroy All Humans game. We'll see on the latter rumor.

*Larian Studios seems to be working on Original Sin 3  but there's a strong possibility that their upcoming game is actually Baldur's Gate 3. Again, we'll see if true or just wishful thinking.

*Ubi's getting a subscription service. Microsoft has already announced that their subscription service on the Xbox is also coming to PC, with previously XBox only titles being now available on PC.  Fusion Frenzy for example.

*The Simpsons is at E3 for some reason. New Simpsons game maybe?

!!! Ooooo I hope it’s the second one. They’d do a fantastic job with Baldur’s Gate. Especially after Obsidian’s kind of meh sequel to Pillars of Eternity that I never finished.

Apparently there are some new Banjo Kazooie toys that have a significantly redesigned Banjo and Kazooie, which is fueling speculation that there might be a new one coming out. Or something like that.

Seems to be pointing to a Smash DLC reveal

Well Tecmo Koei was involved with the Dissidia NT game so it's not too farfetched.

This looks like a big improvement on the first game.

(I got the first one the same time I got Mario Odyssey, so what chance did it have?)

Like mentioned above, EA is doing short streams for each game rather than a big conference. However, the net result of this is that there's going to be about 3-4 hours of EA, rather than a 90 minute presser. Sigh.

    9:15am: Countdown to EA PLAY
9:30am: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
    10:00am: Apex Legends
    10:30am: Battlefield V
    11:00am: FIFA 20
    11:30am: Madden NFL 20
    12:00pm: The Sims 4

First up is the Fallen Order reveal with 15 minutes of gameplay.
https://www.youtube.com/v/8939aURV9Dc

One of the bits of info is that since this is all canon to the current SW universe, you're not going to have light side/dark side choices like in prior games. You're playing a Jedi, so you take the Jedi choice.  November 15 release date.

Up next- Apex Legends. For the folks who missed it, Apex was the 3 v 3 Battle Royale game that EA basically announced out of the blue and launched the same day. They're taking a "We're taking our time with the next bit of content" approach, rather than Fortnite's "new stuff all the time!" approach. Double XP weekend right now. A new "elite" mode with cosmetics only available to folks who've performed well in the game. Season 2 will launch on July 2. New character (I'm not calling them legends, EA). A new weapon. New game modes. The new weapon is the L-Star assault rifle, which is apparently from Titanfall. Very powerful. Only available from certain drops. The ammo you get when you pick it up is all you get.

For gameplay, they're changing up stuff to make the process faster, and getting rid of certain items that folks aren't using, but with my knowledge of the game, the exact changes are Greek to me.  A ranked mode is being added with 6 tiers. New character- Watson, as played by John C. Reilly. Or perhaps not,  Watson is Space French and space female.  She's also a defensive character designed to cut down on the hyper aggression prevalent in most team games.  Watson's backstory is apparently that she and her father helped create the actual Apex arena. (Future Compound here- apparently it's "Wattson." Like the electrical measure. I have now gone blind since my eyes have rolled back so far in my head that they can only see the inside of my skull.)

Hang on. Evelyn is getting into her car over in Replica. Dear lord. The carnage.

Season 2 launches on July 2.

Up next- Battlefield V and FIFA. Note- I'm not a fan of either game, but in deference to those who are, I'll try to report as much info  as I can interpret without much snark here.

New map - Merita. (spelling?) Looks like a village in the mountains/ hills of Greece. Another map- Al San Dan, an expansive North African map with lots of vehicle combat.  And still more maps! This time we're getting close quarters maps for folks who just like to shoot folks immediately.  Other stuff- max rank increase, from 50 to 500.  Last map- Operation Underground.  It's a map set in the subways of (cough cough). It gives off vibes of the Left 4 Dead subway map, but with more guns. This is in October. The other maps arrive with chapter 4, which is Soon (TM). And a look at Chapter 5, which is set in the Pacific. An early look at the Iwo Jima map, which apparently involved the designers wandering around the actual island to map it out for the game. Not sure if I should be impressed by the accuracy or creeped out from the "let's have our game be as accurate to this real life battle as possible." Oh, and the US and Japan arrive in game in Chapter 5 in the fall. Also, private games can now be created.

A brief bit from the Star Wars Battlefront folks. More clone wars era stuff. "Because we all grew up watching it."  I will simply say that was not my experience.

Over to FIFA. An early leak shows that  FIFA 20 will have a street soccer mode called "Volta." (And no. It's going to be soccer throughout this.) And the conference starts in an actual urban court. Well, one that EA set up in a parking lot. I don't think they commandeered one in East LA. That might not end well. EA continues to show that their choice in music sucks as well. A quick jaunt over to the UK and a chat with folks from Manchester United. Sorry Arsenal fans. I have now exhausted my UK team knowledge.  Anyhoo, you can import any of the pro leagues into the street game as well. Numerous options as well. No goalie? 3v3 . 4 v 4. 5 v . 5. Lots of freeform options. Mixed gender teams as well. Clothing options as well. Play in jeans!

In the main mode of the game- gameplay changes. asdas faear wer aer er afae arg are as fd.   Oh sorry. Had an uncontrollable laughing fit there at the idea that EA was making big changes to their gameplay in the sports games. Alleged improvements in the AI, getting them to the ball better, giving the ball better physics and having them perform better away from the ball. More emphasis on the 1 on 1  plays in the game. Better experience in shooting on goal. Pass! Stop hogging the ball! You've got defenders all around you! Pass the damn ball! Sorry, these shots of gameplay are annoying me. Better penalty shots. Changing the pace of defenders. And a year from now, the players will be complaining about everyone of these issues still. September 27 release.

Oh, and Trevor Noah shows up to talk about his job of playing FIFA. "I do other stuff to support myself but FIFA is my job." Noah talks about grabbing the players who the other folks don't use so that folks don't know how they play.

The last bit of EA's slog- Madden and The Sims 4.  But first a message for EA's "Play to Give" program! Don't be a jerk to other folks online!

Holy cow! First, they're talking about Anthem!  It hasn't been taken out to the woodshed and shot yet! Actual question- "Is there a future for Anthem?" I'll note that they don't actually give a yes or no response.

And now Madden. EA's choice in music continues to be awful. Madden apparently announced a lot of new features at the NFL draft. Which I was not watching for game news, for some odd reasons. New Madden features. "Face of the Franchise" - create a QB at a top tier college and go from there. (Not really a new feature, except for the "play during college" thing. And if you NCAA 2020 was still around, you'd still be able to do that too.) Scenario Engine. This will provide you with ways to improve players in the season.  Revised Playbooks.  RPOs. New formations. Ultimate Missions.  X-Factor Abilities.  No, nothing to do with mutants. Seriously, this sounds like the star player skills in Blood Bowl. "Extra routes" "Steady Hands" "Backfield boost" This does sound like EA stole ideas from Blood Bowl for Madden and I didn't think I'd ever type that.

All of that is gibberish to folks who don't follow football. Sorry.

One of the Steelers shows up. His name is JuJu. I have no idea who he is, but I just mostly follow the local trainwreck of a team. EA gives some Ultimate team codes to JuJu. Okay, seriously. You don't need to give a pro player codes. They can afford to buy packs for themselves. Barely.

More talking about gameplay changes! The stars will feel more like stars! Do quests to activate your ultimate ability! Seriously. This isn't a bit. "Do 4 passes of more than 30 yards to activate your Bazooka special skill." Individual players get special animations while they play. 220 RPO options in the game this year to reflect recent changes in NFL gameplay styles. The designer is apparently a former NFL player, BTW, which is kinda interesting. A bunch of players show up to gripe about their in-game ratings.

And boom. Sudden ending. Greg Miller does an unfunny Apex bit.

Over to The Sims. The next expansion already got leaked, but I'll pretend to be surprised.

Right off the bat- Sims 4: Island Living, There are dolphins! And mermaids! You can head out on the open water and I'm surprised that there isn't a sims Pirates game yet.  You can be a lifeguard. I will post the Blotto song later.

Talks about the Sims partnership with Mossino for real world/ in game items. Then they subtly hint that the next expansion is about magic and is called "Realms of Magic" Gosh. Never seen a Sims expansion about magic before.  This also likely means Sims 5 is next year and the magic pack is generally the last expansion for several Sims games.

Up next- Microsoft in about 24 hours.

Okay, Microsoft conference.

Ahead of the show, the pricing for the "X-Box on PC" service broke. It's $5/ 4 EU thingees a month, and you can convert your existing live sub over at the moment for a buck. There will likely be many more details later in the conference itself.  The beta itself is over here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/xbox-beta/9mv0b5hzvk9z?irgwc=1&OCID=AID681541_aff_7593_159229&tduid=%28ir__n3d0thbdtckfr0enkk0sohzw0m2xj0rp0q1dutie00%29%287593%29%28159229%29%28%29%28UUwpUdUnU65587YYwYd%29&irclickid=_n3d0thbdtckfr0enkk0sohzw0m2xj0rp0q1dutie00&activetab=pivot%3Aoverviewtab). If a game is going to leave the service, you'll also have the opportunity to buy it at a discount.  Metro Exodus is in the lineup, which up until now was Epic exclusive. hmmm.

And again, Twitch is 30 seconds ahead of Microsoft's own Mixer Stream. Weird.

So, here we go.  First up, straight into a trailer. Sci-fi setting, set on Halycon. From Obsidian, it's The Outer Worlds.  October 25th. Outer Wilds looks like Borderlands crossed with Bioshock.

Over to Ninja Theory, which got bought by Microsoft last year. A 3rd person combat/team mulitplayer game. Bleeding Edge. 4 v 4 arena combat.

More trailers. Ori and the Will of the Wisps. This still looks gorgeous. Feb 11, 2020

From the Minecraft folks- It's ..well, Minecraft Diablo? Or maybe Minecraft Zelda? You and three other people are running through Minecraft dungeons. Which is convenient since this is literally called Minecraft Dungeons. Spring 2020.

Phil Spencer from X-Box arrives. If he's wearing a gaming shirt, I can't tell which game it's for. "Over the past 2 decades, the number of gamers has tripled." 60 games will be shown today. 30 games for the game pass. 14 exclusives. And what's next. (i.e. the new console.)

More footage from Fallen Order. Our hero boards and takes over an At-At then runs into Forrest Whittaker from Rogue 1. Still November 11.

World Premiere- We're in the woods! and running from something. It's September 1996! Then we're searching for a kid in the woods with our dog! And...wait, Blair Witch?Really?

CD Projekt Red. And the crowd cheers. It's Cyberpunk. No gameplay, just cinematics but wow. Our little street samurai is in trouble. And a hint of cyber generation is tossed in and... it's Keanu Fucking Reeves in the end. And on stage. Bloody fucking hell. Looks like Johnny Mnemonic is back in Cyberpunk.  The crowd literally loses its mind.  And Keanu gives the release date and the gameplay trailer. April 16, 2020.

World Premiere- We're fishing! And building a really massive boat! Spiritfarer. Looks very wholesome

Battletoads. Yes, Microsoft has them.  Stop asking. The word Epic gets used a lot.

The Legend of Wright- a dungeon crawler that looks like it's hand drawn on notebook paper. Very unique looking. 2020.

Stop cutting to the audience, cameraman. Indy games. Here we go again. Pathologic 2 . Star Renegades. Afterparty. The Good Life. Cross Code. Creature in the Well. Riverbond. Blazing Chrome. Felix the Reaper. Undermine. Supermarket Shriek. Ikenfell. Night Call. LoTR Living Card Game. I missed about half of those.  All of those will be Day 1 XBox game pass releases.

And the Xbox Game Pass for PC, now with Halo. It's in open beta right now.  Titles shown include Gears 5, Metro Exodus, Prey, Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein 2, Imperator Rome and over 100 titles by August. $10 a month. XBox Game Pass Ultimate with Live and game pass for console and PC. Today, it's just a $1. Yeah, some of this contradicts stuff above. Leaks were wrong it seems.

World Premiere- We're taking to the air. Holy cow! I think Microsoft remembered their Flight Simulator game! And it is indeed Microsoft Flight Simulator, back from the dead.

And ... Age of Empires 2? Huh.  It's coming back this fall in a remastered version, I guess.

Over to Colorado. This must be Wasteland 3. Now with Luchadores! And Killer Clowns! The whimsical nature of this trailer is not what I'd expect from the Wasteland series.

Microsoft added 7 studios last year. And now it's 8. Double Fine is now part of Microsoft. Tim Schafer steps on stage. Tim offers to make the next Halo or Forza game. Or even Excel 2020. And then we get a Psychonauts 2 trailer. Which still looks exciting.

World Premier- A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... And Legos. It's all nine star wars films in one Lego game. Lego Star Skywalker Wars Saga. In 2020.

And Dragon Ball characters arrive, speaking in moon language. Well, shouting in it. A lot of shouting.  New DBZ fighting game next spring.

Annapurrina. World Premiere. For Pete's sake- don't show a picture of the screen, cameraman! Show the blasted video! Looks very Groundhog Day-esque. 12 Minutes, An interactive thriller about a man trapped in a time loop.

STOP SHOWING THE AUDIENCE! THEY ARE NOT THE FOCUS!  Ugh.Way to the Woods. A deer and her fawn are heading head, guided by light.

And the new Gears. Which has a very artsy trailer which doesn't even use the whole "Gears of War" title in it. Sept 10 release. They show off the new Escape mode. And 3 WWE folks will be playing that mode later tonight. As a pre-order bonus, you get a Terminator pack. It's folk the new film, so, maybe that good?

And a new elite controller. They're quite nice, but my third party controller cost $15 new. 40 hour battery life on these though.

Dying Light 2. Next spring. Still parkour zombies.

World Premiere. Forza. And a sports car silhouette is on stage, which gets ignored for the new Forza Horizon expansion.,.. which is Lego based. Well played, Forza. June 13. Lego Speed Champions expansion .

And that Gears Pop!  abomination returns from last year. Still with Funk pops. It's a mobile game?

State of Decay 2: Heartland.  More story! Two different paths depending on which character is played. Available now.

World Premiere. Seeeeega. It's Phantasy Star Online 2 ! A battleship appears to be a raid boss! Next Spring! On X Box 1! Huh. That was unexpected.

And now Smilegate, Crossfire X. On Xbox next year.  This is a "first to console" thing so it might hit PS4 or 5 as well. Nice cinematics but no idea what you do in this. Looks COD-ish.

World Premiere- Bandai Namco. Tales of Arise. 2020. Yay. Tales. JRPG.

2k. It's Borderlands 3. Bakoom! Also, not just on the Epic store. Sept 13. And new BL2 campaign. RIGHT NOW.

World Premiere- Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin. With Martin's involvement, this will come out in 2046. Elden Ring. From Fromsoftware.

Phil's back to talk about Xbox going to the cloud. Project XCloud, which is... something?  Console streaming that uses your Xbox as a server. Okay anywhere. (I have no idea what this is.)

And the next console. "A console should be for one thing and one thing only- gaming." Oh thank lord. They heard us. No more "watch your TV on the Xbox!" Less load time! Less loading screens! 4 times as powerful as the XB1. Blah blah graphics specs. New generation of SSD. Cross platform play. It's Project Scarlett. Holiday 2020.

Xbox is 18 years old now. And Scarlett will launch with a new Halo game. Because Microsoft aren't idiots. And a new cinematic trailer which does have what looks like Elizabeth Berkley and a frozen Spartan.  And the Ringworld is broken. Halo Infinite.

Up next- Bethesda.

Bethesda Conference. After last year, this has moved from "OMG!" territory for many to "Oh dear lord, don't screw up again."

Here we go.

First up- a video of  "We love our players!" "You're not afraid to tell us how you feel!" And they see us! Oh dear lord! HOW ARE YOU INSIDE MY HOUSE?!?!

Oh, now video of game stuff. Can't tell if this is new or old. Some of it seems to be the upcoming Wolfenstein game.

First up VP Pete Hines. We'll see if Todd Howard shows his face. And, speak of the devil, here he is. Well, someone lost money on a bet there.  "We had 60 million players last year!" "Fallout 76 had some well deserved criticism."

But instead of dwelling on that, let's talk about Elder scrolls Blades! It's still in beta! And I'm resisting asking if you all have phones! It updates tonight! It's also coming to Switch later this year. And yes, they made a Switch Blades joke.

Now back to the trainwreck! Er, Fallout 76. There's a patch coming called "Wastelanders" and it will "change the game completely." Gasp! Human NPCs! Actual dialog! And a new main quest line! It's in the Fall. Also, there will be a free trial of FO76 from June 10-17.  And a new game mode. Oh dear lord. They're doing a Battle Royale aren't they? (head desk) They are. Fight to be the Overseer for Vault 51. ...I'm just speechless at this point.

Todd is back. "Everything we've talked about this year is free!" Just look at that Tommy Lee pic again.

Shingi Makami from Tango Studios.  He starts off giving a shout out to his staff in Tokyo. Their game- Ghostwire Tokyo. You're fighting supernatural baddies! Side note- this crowd is overly hyped about everything. Another person from the studio arrives, also not a native English speaker. (Future me- This is apparently Shingi's protege.)  "Our game is spoooooky." I'm not going to make fun of nervous folks who are trying to address a live crowd in their non-native language. Anyway, folks are disappearing in Tokyo  and it's up to you to find out why. And by disappearing, literally vanishing with clothes falling empty to the ground, mid-step. Looks interesting. Great trailer, but no game play in it. (Tango, BTW, are the Evil Within folks.)

Random players. "Add dragons to everything!" Can't really argue with that.

Elder Scrolls Online. Again, the crowd is about at a 20 on a scale of 1-10 hype-wise. "ESO is not a trainwreck!" seems to be the theme here. Oh, the new expansion's name is literally pronounced "Elsewhere." I'm a doofus because I never noticed that. In the trailer Khalissi's dwagun attacks a city. Thankfully a nearby dungeon party arrives to help out. And apparently cat people do not land on their feet when falling. More info at Quakecon.

Seriously crowd, stop "woooooing" everything.

Also at Zenimax, a new game! A mobile game. (sigh) But it's Commander Keen so nevermind.  Not going to gripe about an ID franchise coming back. Launches this summer.

"We at Bethesda love mobile games! Just like you!" Look at Tommy Lee again for a third time.  Anyway, Elder Scrolls Legends, their card game. "If you like other card games, try ours!" Literally what is said on stage. New expansion June 20.

Rage 2. Which was released a few weeks ago. New stuff coming, shown in the style of an 80s sitcom promo. They're adding stuff weekly if you enjoy the game.

Over to Wolfenstein. Two new games enroute. Wolfenstein Cyberpilot- a VR game. You're a French resistance fighter/ hacker using the Nazi war machines against them. This July. That wasn't one of the two games, BTW. First up Wolfenstein Youngblood. You play BJ's daughters in 80s France.  With a co-op feature. A bit confused as to why BJ's twin kids have different accents. This will supposedly be bigger than Wolfenstein 2 in size. July 26.

The other Wolfenstein game is coming from Arkane, the Dishonored folks. Black Reef, an island prison. There's Colt and Juliet. They have to kill each other over and over. "Deathloop" Um, not sure of the Wolfenstein tie-in? Maybe the other guy was wrong and the VR game was the second one?

Back to talking to random gamers.

And there was a computer crash on my end. I think all we missed was snark, me griping about the cameras, and Doom Eternal, which comes out November 22. There's a collector's edition, which will have a wearable Doomguy helmet, which will not likely fit most adults.

Unless they snuck it in in the two minutes I was down. No Elder Scrolls 6. No Starbound.

Over to Devolver. Sigh.
Title: Re: E3 2019

Devolver. I am not a fan of their prior conferences.

We start off with a Robocop reference. And they're turning their conference into Devolver Direct.

First up from Media Tonic is a brightly colored  where you're racing through a lvel trying to save as many of your Fall Guys as possible. So, Pimkin crossed with Lemmings. Fall Guys: Knockout on PS4 and PC next year.

Devolver Bootleg. It's filled with ripoffs of Devolver's own games like "Enter the Gun Dungeon" and "Hotline Milwaukee." Yes it's real and 1% off on Steam right now (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1066260/Devolver_Bootleg/)

Carrion. You play the monster in a horror game. 2020

I will note that this does feel like a treehouse event. Well, if you ignore the gore.

And a light gun, arcade version, House of the Deady version of Enter the Gungeon. 2020. I would love for this to actually exist.

The Messenger Panic Picnic- out in July.  Side scroller. Ninjas on the beach. Looks like Giana sisters actually. The Messenger is a real game, so this might be real?

My Friend Pedro June 20. Rushing Attack with a giant banana. Again, no idea what is a joke or not at this point. (Future Compound- well, this is real. Comes out June 20 on PC and Switch.)

Back to the Robocop "homage" which transitions to a Terminator homage.

Well, that was a waste of 20 minutes, I guess.  Back tomorrow to start with the PC show.  And Devolver's replaying last year's Pre-pre show, which wasn't funny last year either.

And a side note- one of the main channels on Twitch that had been covering E3 when they ended their broadcast, they hosted a smaller streamer who they knew of, giving her 5000 more viewers suddenly and pretty much breaking her, but in a good way.  Rather heartwarming to see, especially when other channels started hosting her as well.

Age of Empires 2 is coming back? Microsoft just won E3!!!!!

There's a HD edition available now, but this is the "Definitive Edition" with graphics that go up to 4k, some balance tweaks and a new, Mongol based campaign.

And they did a teaser for AoE IV last E3...

Loved the Cyberpunk trailer. The camera work was really good, like movie level good, not to mention the graphics. Very excited for that game.

And I was dead set on choosing a female protagonist, and probably still will... but I didn’t realize Aaron Paul was doing the male voice. He’s quite good. Makes it a tougher choice.

Okay, PC Gaming Show, which starts an hour later than listed in some places. And thank the lord, because Rifftrax's Twitch is playing Whizzo right now.

Our hosts are Day 9 and Frankie Ward. Day 9 played Mark in Julie and Jack BTW.

First up from Rebellion- Evil Genius 2: World Domination. Looks very much like an updated version of the first game.

Vampire Bloodlines 2.  From Paradox.  With gameplay footage. Well, not a lot of it, and still kinda cinematic. "Walking" isn't really gameplay.  First quarter of next year.  I have some issues here, but we'll see how it turns out.

Starmancer, from Chucklefish. "It's basically Dwarf Mountain in space."

Chivalry 2  from Torn Banner and Trip Wire. Medieval combat and a sequel to the first Chivalry game. Team based. Next year.

Pretty sure the announcer is the narrator from Darkest Dungeon, BTW.

"Mosaic. Out 2019" Also with Blip Blop, which is a less intense Cookie Clicker.

Midnight Ghost Hunt. From Coffee Stain. Be a ghost and hide from ghost hunters with proton packs. Or take them out with your ghost powers. 4 v 4 multiplayer.  Apparently developed and done by one man.  And once the clock strikes midnight, it's time for the ghosts' vengeance and the hunters need to survive until they can evacuate.

Unexplored 2. A rougelike with heavy exploration focus.

And now Samsung talks monitors. I'll check on Whizzo.  Whizzo just finished looking at a Christmas display and is getting refreshments. Back to Samsung. Curved 240 hz monitor. Available in July for about $400 for a 27" which isn't tremendously outrageous.

From Funcom. There's an open mike and someone seems to be moving furniture and trashcans. Mutant Year Zero Seed of Evil. Adventure/ RPG. July 30. Conan Unconquered. FPS. Out now. Moons of Madness. Looks Dead Spacey. Halloween.  All of these seem to be PC/XB1/PS4 releases, BTW.

Also from Funcom- Conan Chop Chop , which was not an April Fool's joke.  It's a chibi Conan game, that looks a bit like Gauntlet crossed with Don't Starve. Sept 3.

Last Oasis. The Earth had stopped rotating and you need to outrun the sun. The science seems a bit dubious here, I have to say. Sept 4rd release also.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Sci-fi 4x planet builder from the Age of Wonders folks.  Aug 6. There are mecha and dinosaur cavalry forces.

From the Sniper Elite folks- It's 1946. You've cast Hitler into Hell, but his demonic forces still roam Europe. Not quite sure what the Asian looking woman is doing in Europe at that time. I'd think being identified as part of the Axis might not be the best idea for survival at the time.  Zombie Army 4. Later this year.

From Perfect World.  Remnant from the Ashes. August 20. You're fighting Treants and plant things.

Griftlands- a deck building roguelike set in a dystopian sci-fi world. Epic Store exclusive. Alpha in July. Looks a bit Slay the Spire-ish.

Planet Zoo, from the Planet Coaster folks. There's a zoo AND IT'S THE SIZE OF A PLANET! Or it's just a normal zoo that you're running. (Quick check on Rifftrax. We're learning about boredom and turtles are about to be thrown. You ever going to riff part 2 of that, Bridget and Mary Jo?) Heavy emphasis on it being a modern zoo, with concentration on animal health and conservation. November 5.

Shenmue's creator arrives. Shenmue 3 has already been pushed back a few weeks ago. The graphics are not quite up to modern levels, but I don't think anyone who wants to play Shenmue cares. November 19. And I think I heard Liam O'Brien in there.

Coffee Stain and Lava Potion Studios. A game based on Heroes and Might and Magic style gameplay. Songs of Conquest

Warhammer Vermintide 2. It's already out. But a new update will allow you to play ass the Skaven in a versus mode, ala Left 4 Dead.  And it's Bayta. Not Bee-tah.

Per Aspera. You're an AI orbiting Mars trying to terraform it. Hmm. Terraformed Mars has water in the same places as it does in Surviving Mars' map does.

For our next game, it's a humanity simulator. Try and take your group of great apes up to Lucy. Ancestors. August 27

Epic gives an ad showing off their exclusives which include "Untitled Goose Game" ... and Auto Chess. What the hell? That was a DOTA mod! Oh, Steam's not going to like that. (Although Blizzard is probably laughing.)

A "love letter to classic RPGs."  Oh, like Starflight or Wizardry? Oh, no. Like Chrono Cross, I guess. You play in the present, trying to effect the future.  Cristales. 2020.

Valfaris. You've got a very big gun and it's a side scrolling shooter/ Metrovania game.

Borderlands 3. It's still coming and doesn't really need a hype boost from me. September 13. Bakoom.

Frankie's in a shark onesie. This is a callback to last year's "Maneater" game, a game where you play a shark out to kill a bunch of folks. As the shark, you have a human nemesis in the game.  Can you launch an Italian guy in a boat into the air though? If you can't, not a real shark game. No release date yet.

Terraria. A game that I've never heard pf. Journey's End, the penultimate expansion for the game. Out sometime? The stream cut out.

Telling Lies, a similar game to Her Story. Watch videos. Figure out the story. Coming soon. "Very" soon. "On Steam" Hmmmm.

Warframe. And Space Mom! Space Ninjas back in space. And space combat. Empyrean. Full reveal on July 6.

Genesis Noir-a noir game starting with the Big Bang. Um, sure.

El Hijo. You're a kid trying to get to his mom but first you must escape a monastery using your toys and stealth.

Final guest- Sven from Larian studios and Mike Mearls from Hasbro. Baldur's Gate 3.  There will be Mind Flayers. It's still 5th edition. Oh, Sven says "Game Master" instead of "Dungeon Master."  While points for saying the correct term, but WotC wants their term used instead. And WotC announces that on Sept 17, there's going to be a tabletop prequel to the computer game, for Lvl 1-13. "BG3 will be out when it's ready."

And that's all. Up next- Ubisoft in about an hour.

I don’t think so. I think most of the dialog and motion capture is exactly the same. One of the great things for video game developers with the main stream acceptance of lgbtqt lifestyles, is that now your romance options for both genders of your protagonist can be exactly the same.

It'll likely be more along the lines of Tomb Raider than Kotor. While there are different ways to get to the same place, you're still getting the same ending no matter what.

While waiting for Ubi, one of the leaked things that likely won't show up elsewhere is that "Destroy All Humans" is coming back.

Also both DOTA and League of Legends are both making Auto Chess games.

Ubi Conference. And pre-show, we get Ice-T telling me not to be a dick online? Do we gotta level up too, Ice? Yes, we still remember that stupid episode.

Preshow we also hear that AC: Odyssey is getting a quest builder pack this fall.

And here comes the trainwreck.  Except his year, we start with Assassin's Creed Symphony. No, it's an actual orchestral performance of the music from the series. The vocal artists have books of lyrics in front of them, which is odd as the lyrics are literally "ahhhhh" in the performance. That quirk aside, nice change of pace from recent years' "Just Dance" insanity. They're touring as well, starting on June 29. 80 piece orchestra plus a choir.  (Future Compound- 2 shows in the US. 3 in Canada. 6 in Europe. Not even hitting New York.)

Now to games.

London. "It's a mess.""We're buildin' a Resistance."  Anyway, London is a police state and you need to recruit folks to join the cause. Change characters around and if they die? Well, no respawns. Move onto another character. In the footage, we go from a soccer hooligan to old lady. And at least this is gameplay, albeit with the UI shaved off and highly scripted, rather than the cinematics that we've been getting in other conferences.  It's Watch Dogs: Legion. Grab any of the NPCs, recruit them and they'll join the cause.  All the cutscenes will change too. Lot more machine guns in London than I expected though. March 6, 2020

Next up- Rob McElhenny from "It's Always Sunny." He's talking TV. A TV show about games.. It's a show about folks working in an MMORPG studio. Oh dear. Will this be "Big Bang", "Bob" or "New Game!" in terms of quality? It's for Apple TV+ so it at least doesn't have to deal with a network. Danny Pudi from Community is in it, at least. We'll see. The promo wasn't too cringey, just "our boss is an egotistical jerk" in terms of humor.

Rainbow 6 Siege. New operators. New season starts tomorrow.
And now Adventure Time. Jake and Finn are being added to Brawlhalla.  Looks like Princess Bubblegum is in there too. Out now?
Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It's got a puppy! Instantly the Ubisoft become the best conference this E3 because of the dog. The puppy is there with Jon "Punisher" Bernthal. He's playing the bad guy in this. More drones with machine guns in this too. I detect a theme.  "Ghosts Never die." Um, Stone Cold assures me that it's angels who don't die. Also, solo players get AI team mates in this. Yay. October 4. Beta Sep 5.

Ghost Recon Delta Company. It's a community thing for Ghost Recon. Fans, Streamers, cosplay, etc.

And the Terminator theme plays.  I guess it's coming to Ghost Recon?
Splinter Cell! And a mobile format. Oh  dear lord. Whew. Okay, this seems to be a Ubiheroes mobile game, not a full game. Tom Clancy's Elite Squad.

Oh dear. It's the 10th anniversary of Just Dance. Someone played this for 138 hours straight? Dear lord! Oh, and the dancers are back on stage. November. And every damn year, this:

For Honor. Everyone's getting attacked by ghosts! Available until the 27th of June.

Rainbow Six: Quarantine. 3 player Co-Op. Didn't say much about it.

Back to DC and The Division. They're thanking the players. Aww. And until the 16th, the Division 2 is free to play for everyone. And up next, Agents are going on tour to save the nation. You'll head to the National Zoo, a Presidential Compound and a College. the college will be an investigative mission. In Episode 2, you're heading to the Pentagon. Yeah, that's not going to be fun. Episode 3, you'll head out on a manhunt and heading back to NYC. And there's a movie with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhal. It'll be on Netflix. To quote Cartman "Everyone can get a show on Netflix."

And here's Ubi's sub service, Uplay Plus. 100 games, and you get the collector's version if there is one. $14.99/ month. Starts in September. Also includes the new releases, so if you want to, say, sign up for a month and play say, Watch Dogs Legion for that month instead of paying $60 for it, there you go. Also coming to Stadia.

There's a dead ringer for Robin Williams in the audience. Weird. Not game related. Just odd.

Roller skates. This is Ubi's Rocket League/ roller derby game, Roller Champions. Launches today. Well, for a pre-alpha demo of the game. So not actually launching today.

And the Ubi CEO arrives. He's here to announce a new project. It's about mythology. "When heroes need help, they turn to the gods. When the gods need help, they turn to you." Gods and Monsters. Feb 25, 2020

And that's it. We're dumped out to a Rainbow 6 celebrity showdown, hosted by a person who is not very good at this.

Well, that wasn't the usual trainwreck from Ubi. Nothing spectacular announced as well.

Up next- Square Enix.

Assuming we're talking about Jedi Fallen Order still, there won't be. They're literally considering  the protagonist to be a character in the setting. It'd be like trying to customize Lando. This is not KOTOR. It's closer to Force Unleashed.

Okay, addendum for Rainbow 6 Quarantine- this was originally a limited time mode in Siege, but folks liked it so they've spun it off into its own game.  It's a PVE thing.

Square Enix Conference. Last of the evening.

And first thing we see is the Final Fantasy start screen. I think. Because the idiot cameraman is showing a wide shot of the room, and not the screen. Again.  But it's the FFVII Remake, which is apparently its actual title. It'll take up 2 blu-rays for the content. First segment is basically just getting out of Midgard. And now, gameplay. Realtime combat. Sigh, but we already knew this. Bars fill and tactical mode can be entered, which is much slower time. Barrett arrives. Tifa will be shown "soon." And Cloud and Barrett fight a Scorpion Sentinel. There's a weak point which you need to hit for ultimate damage. This is an edited fight, and it's still really long. And the SE booth will have demos. A long version of the trailer... and Tifa. And Barrett's kid. And Sepiroth shows up as well.  Part 1 arrives March 3, 2020. The ultra-deluxe version has a Cloud on his bike statue. PS4 only at the moment.

Life is Strange 2. The trailer keeps cutting to streamers reacting to the game,  which is cringey, and the streamers I'm hearing react to these trailers are remarking that this is very weird for them too. So, bad call there, SE. This is out now.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Really? Huh. Didn't expect to see this again. For smart phones, Switch and PS4.

Octopath Traveler. On Steam! Now!

The Last Remnant Remastered. On Switch. Tonight! Did not expect to see that again either. And dear lord. This trailer is like 5 minutes long. July 12 release. PS4.

For the Switch DragonQuest 11. Which can be played either with modern graphics or in retro 16-bit style. 8- Bit? Whatever. This fall for Switch.

Indie games from teh SE Collective. Goetia. Turing Test Black he fall Children of Zodiarcs. Fear Effect Edna. Toyko Dar. Forgotton Anne.  Boundless. I'm missing a bunch. This year- Battalion 1944. 2020- it's cars! Mexican cars! And top down racing.  With pit stops and stuff. Circuit Superstars,

The aforementioned Battalion 1944. Multiplayer team based WW 2 combat. I guess World War 2 did technically have a deathmatch mode.  Available now on Steam.

SE Music. Available on streaming services now.

Some Kingdom Hearts stuff, with no dialog. Or context. Anyway, the DLC REmind comes this winter.

Dragonquest Builders 2. Um. I typed a lot more about this earlier. But bizarrely it's moved down here somehow. PS4/Switch. 5 minute longer trailer.  July 12.

FFXIV Online. And the Shadowbringers expansion, out July 2. New races. New jobs. New stuff. Return to Westfall! Fight Hogger in a raid! Donate materials to the war ef... oh. wrong MMORPG. The Warriors of Darkness arrive in game.

And Darkness in the room as someone forgot ro cue the next clip.

Techland. And a Metric song, so not a JP game. This looks very parkour and zombie-ish and It's Dying Light 2. Next Spring.

Romancing Saga 3 and Saga Scarlet Grace both arrive in the West for the first time. Steam/ Switch/ PS4 and Saga 3 is on Vita too. Soon.

FF Brave Exius gets a spinoff. War of the Visions: FFBE. Out sometime.  Looks FF Tactics-ish?

People Can Fly. Outriders. No clue about the gameplay. Next summer. It's future-ish. Oh, the developer is here to talk about it. It's a shooter. Probably 3rd person ala Buletstorm and Gears, which they worked on. But nothing actually revealed other than "It's a shooter."

Something about reincarnation. Lots of somethings about it. You're a watcher who dispatches spirits trapped between life and death. Oninaki. August 22.

Final Fantasy VIII. A remastered version. Yeah the old CGi in it is rather offputting to look at these days. Sometime this year.

And a Quinjet. Avengers. Tony, Thor, Cap. And the Golden Gate bridge explodes. Damn you James Ngyuen! Thor is quite clearly Travis Willingham. This is a cinematic trailer, but Crystal Dynamics is here to talk about the game. (The shown lineup seems to be that of the first movie. Hawkeye is MIA though.)  Original story, not based on the movies. Oh, and the cast is here. Troy Baker is Hulk. Jeff Shine- Cap. Laura Bailey is Widow. Nolan North is Tony. And Travis is indeed Thor again. Mercer better be playing a coffee store employee or something. Post-launch you'll get more content. Online team missions with an expanding roster. All at no additional cost. No loot boxes. No PTW stuff. (Glances at Marvel Strike Force, which wants $25  for the chance for a hero tonight.)  PS4/XB1/ Stadia/PC release. Sony gets early beta access and other stuff. More trailers. And Hank Pym with a raygun! Marvel's Avengers. May 15, 2020 No gameplay, but it seems third person.

And we're done. Nintendo has a treehouse tomorrow.

They are not. They've done a number of things over the past 8 weeks.  (PS5 news, Death Stranding preview) And their E3 sale is going on right now, bu thtey actually don't have any conferences scheduled for the rest of the year. that can change but there's no news yet.

Okay, Nintendo Pillow Fort time. This should be 100% Switch, BTW.

Up first, Link fighting Shadow Link and Meta Kinght and is saved by the Dragonquest Luminary Hero. Well, heroes. I see heroes from 11 and back to 8 there.  And it looks like they can cast spells via a drop down menu.  This summer.

More Dragonquest in that XI is coming to Switch on September 27.

Bowser is here. Both of them. For those unaware Reggie left Nintendo and his replacement is Doug Bowser.

Luigi's Mansion 3.  Set in a spooky hotel. Yet it's not Luigi's Hotel. There's an 8 player horde mode as well. Just go with it. Sometime this year.

A Netflix logo. This seems to be the Dark Crystal? Dark Crystal:Age of Resistance Tactics. Well, that's a thing.

And Chibi Chibi Link. It looks like someone made a Tsum-tsum version of Chibi Link.  He's stuck on an island.  Link's Awakening. September 29.

Square Enix. Trials of Mana. An action RPG. Early 2020 And the first three Mana games are also coming to the Switch. First time out of Japan on those.

The Witcher. Really? Witcher 3 on Switch. Later this year.

Fire Emblem Three Houses. July 26

Resident Evil! Play it on the go! In a spooky old house! Show that you have zero survival skills! RE 5 and 6 coming this fall.

Hey. It's Travis from No More Heroes. And it's No Moe Heroes 3. 2020

A top down shooter. Conttra: Rogue Corp. Sept 24. It has a Cyborg Panda. And 10 Contra games available today int he eShop.

Mechas fighting. Daemon x Machina. Sept 13.

And this looks Panzer Dragoon-y? Which is appropriate, since it is Panzer Dragoon. This winter.

Pokemon Sword and Shield. Still coming this year. You can use the little Pokeball controller with it.

Astral Chain. Aug 30. They say "Legion" a lot in this. Fight "Chimeras" alongside a tamer one.

Paradox. Something with mobsters. Empire of Sin. Next year.

Marvel. Ultimate Alliance 3? Elsa Bloostone. Magneto with an Infinity Stone. Spider-Gwen. X-Men?  July 19. Ah, the expansion pass contains DLC for Marvel Knights, X-Men and the FF.

More Zelda and Link. It's huh. Crypt of the Necrodancer? Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer feat. The Legend of Zelda. Out soon-ish

November- Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. Mario? Getting in a footrace with Sonic might not be a good idea.

Animal Crossing. You're on a deserted Island! Except tom Nook is here too. That jerk. Animal Crossing New Horizons.  March 20. Pushed back from this year.

And a bunch of upcoming stuff. Ni No Kuni. Minecraft Dungeons. Spyro. Silksong. Elder Scrollls Blades. My Friend Pedro. Doom Eternal. The Sinking City. Wolfenstein Youngblood. Dead By Daylight. Alien Isolation. Final fantasy Crystal Chronicles. DQ Builders 2. Just Dance. Catan. (With the Seafarer Expansion, it seems)  Stranger Things. Super Lucky's Tale. Dauntless. Super Mario Maker 2.

More Smash stuff. And Banjo Kazookie is teased. And then after we get trolled, they arrive to join the Smash roster.  This fall.

Last trailer- looks Breath of the Wild-ish. which might be because the sequel to Breath of the Wild is now in development. So you get a sequel.

There you go, folks. No big conferences after this.  And Rifftrax on twitch is playing... ugh. Julie and Jack. Why do you hate me so?  Anyway, keep checking back for more random news.

Jazzed about Dragon Quest and Banjo Kazooie in Smash. Makes my season pass feel worth the money.

New Panzer Dragoon excites me!

Excited about the Mana collection (Out later today!), the new Contra looks great. Fire Emblem literally already has my money. Of course I'll be getting Luigi's Mansion and the Zelda Necrodancer tie-in.

Like last year, this stuff all makes me happy, but Nintendo's refusal to go too far past the current calendar year means there aren't a lot of big surprises.

Breath of the Wild sequel is cool, too.

And a brief note- Cyberpunk 2077 was originally supposed to be digital only here in the US for PC, but the Euro market was getting a snazzy collector's edition, seen below:

Well, the US players did not like that, so after the outcry we're getting this version for the PC as well. Only $249.99!

Preorders for Bayonetta 3 are starting to appear on store websites and no one is sure if they're just jumping the gun (like they did last year) or if there's actual news enroute.

Gotta love how both rumors ended up being true.  Both Erdrick and Banjo Kazooie in Smash

Looking forward to Necro Dancer and maybe Trials of Mana, but I don’t know, the art didn’t thrill me there. Might still be fun.

But they didn’t mention anything about Crosscode, which is supposed to be coming to the switch in 2019. Was hoping for a release date. Hrumph. I really want to play that. Started to on the PC back when it was still early access and really enjoyed it, but then stopped because I didn’t want to get too far and then it not be finished, or have missed stuff that was added later. But then I heard it was coming out for the switch, which is the perfect platform for it, so I’m waiting... patiently. Hrumph.

So apparently Grant Kirkhope himself composed the music for Banjo's reveal trailer.

Oh I get it. Trials of Mana is the Secret of Mana 2 that never came to the US, and is out now on the switch in Collection of Mana. And then they are also doing a 3D remaster version later. After watching the Collection of Mana trailer, I am much more interested in that than the 3D remaster.  Might pick it up now actually.

Really makes me want to play Secret of Evermore again. It was the first RPG I ever played. I think my dad bought it for more back when we’d just pick out games based on the box. I got very frustrated and had very little idea how to progress, because I didn’t understand the concept of experience and leveling, having only really played Mario and Star Fox at that point. Eventually I came back to it and got the hang of things. I hear it’s a fairly easy RPG, which is hard to wrap my head around when that first boss was sooooo hard for tiny me to beat.

So while Trials of Mana is available today digitally, there is a link on the official Square website to preorder a physical version that comes out in August, if you're into that sort of thing.

A shit load of FF7:Remake info, but more importantly, full gameplay.

I remember them being fun. But this was in my rom emulator days. I should probably buy the collection just for karma’s sake. I probably will, but maybe I’ll wait to see some impressions on how good of a port it is.

I played Seiken Densetsu III (What would have been Secret of Mana 2) in Japanese. Despite being generally highly praised, I didn't particularly like it. But I am glad it's finally seeing a proper English release.

I'm much more excited by the remake of Romancing SaGa 3. Just so long as they don't nerf the difficulty. RS1 already got a very good remake in the form of Minstrel Song on the PS2. Now we just need RS2 and SaGa Frontier to be remade. I would buy either one in a heartbeat.

OK, read and watched a bit more on the train ride to work.

Animal Crossing looks perfect. I don't hate that it is delayed because I have plenty of catching up to do on games already, and lots of big titles still coming this year.

Cadence of Hyrule is out this week  (13th I think I read). I'm super into it!

Never played a Panzer Dragoon game. From what I just read (didn't have time to watch the trailer yet) it sounds fun.

I'm still not sold on Astral Chain. It looks like a less over the top Bayonetta? And the over the topness is really what makes Bayonetta so great. Maybe I'm just not getting the right idea from the trailers though. I hope there's a demo.

Never played a Dragon Quest. Always torn about picking up anything that looks like that large of a game :P

Don't care for Contra.

Already guaranteed to pick up Luigi's Mansion 3, so I didn't even bother reading/watching it.

Ditto with Fire Emblem.

Haven't watched the trailer yet but Empire of Sin has my attention.

Ran out of time!

Also
Julie and Jack is an excellent Rifftrax.

There's a demo out for Cris Tales.  It's... meh.  The art is cool, but areas feel so small because of it.  They can't make big areas with that much hand drawn art.  To make them feel bigger I think they made the movement speed kind of slow, but that just feels annoying.  Plus, everyone feels kind of wooden.  They are drawn really well, but the characters are rarely animated beyond normal walking and breathing.  Plus it all feels very simple.  I think perhaps the target audience is much younger than I am.  It's not bad.  It's just all very cliche and simple and slow, which is something perhaps a younger person wouldn't care about.

I will posit that there is a different level of "bad" between, say, "Day of the Animals" and a James Ngyuen film. It's like going to the hospital for a broken leg and going in for a heart bypass.

Roundup of day 1 news:

*Konami announces a Turbo-Grafx mini Console. No release date, price, or complete list of titles yet, although R-Type, Alien Crush and Ys have all been announced as included so far.

*Limited Run announced a physical reprint of a bunch of old Lucas Arts titles. Monkey Island, Dark Forces, Rebel Assault, Shadow of the Empire, Tie Fighter,  X-Wing and a lot more. One a month for quite a while.

*The mysterious "Simpsons are at E3" event ultimately was about nothing. EA tried to do a "Mario Party" style Simpsons game at one point, but it fell through. The conference was just the folks from The Simpsons talking about the various game projects over the years. Oh, and Tapped Out, which is still running,  is getting a Fortnite style update as an event.

*More news about Xbox Scarlett in November.

*The Pokemon Home thing will have rather severe limits on what can get transferred over to Sword/Shield. I don't know the exact details. Sorry.

*Microsoft has its eye on an unnamed Japanese studio. Still trying to crack that market.

*Square Enix has no idea how many games the FFVII remake will actually be. Oh, that's not a good sign.

A much needed reality check on Cyberpunk. Now I’m only cautiously excited for it, but there’s a chance it could fail pretty hard.

Do you mean RS2? Be warned, if it's the same as the version on Steam, that is actually a port of the mobile version. It's better than nothing, but only slightly. At least it's in English.

There's been a trend recently of bringing old fan-favorite games to the states that we've only been able to experience through translation patches. Seems like a win-win because companies like Square Enix get to turn a profit and all they have to do is localize and emulate.

Hey, Nintendo! Got any games like that sitting around?
