Title: Tromasterpiece Theater
Post by: wihogfan on March 09, 2019, 12:03:02 PM
Had never heard of them before they came up in my Kickstarter feed trying to raise money for their second episode.

They have a deal with Troma to riff Troma films, which seems like a bad idea since the films that most people know Troma for are kind of riffs on bad straight to video movies on their own. (And while I watched a lot of them when growing up in the VCR era, I find the juvenile humor in most of them to be unfunny and unwatchable now.)

But their first episode was Lloyd Kaufman’s first film “The Battle of Love’s Return”. Terrible poorly made incomprehensible movie, but not much in it that would have made me think “Troma”. Riffing better than I expected. Audio and acting in host segments kind of bad.

Episode 1- The Battle of Love’s Return available for free and in HD on youtube:

I'll add that despite my criticisms of episode 1, I really enjoyed it and pitched in for their Kickstarter to get episode 2 made (which should happen since they were asking for $500 and have already gotten 7 times that). I'm skeptical that episode 2 will be as good just because episode 2 will riff Poultrygeist, which unlike "The Battle of Love's Return" is a typical juvenile Troma flick that is going to be much, much harder to riff.

I'm intrigued. I disagree with regards to the riff-ability of Troma films. There is a huge range of types of films and in my experiences a good majority are not in fact trying to parody legitimate films. Quite a few are just trying to be experimental and just end up failing. The big hitters most know are definitely tongue in cheek, but their failings are definitely easy to poke fun at. If you can riff a sci fi original which is trying to be a bad movie... these are certainly in the realm of being riffed.

Episode 2 has been out for awhile. Haven't watched it myself yet, but like episode 1, its available for free on youtube (see link above).
They're changing their name and expanding ti non-Troma films.

They’ve got a new Kickstarter going for two Roastmasterpiece titles, the new, less Troma-focused version. Cannibals and The Killer Eye are the movies.
