Title: The Hanna Barbera Cinematic Universe
Post by: The Lurker on October 16, 2018, 11:07:40 AM
Because Warner Bros is still trying to make this a thing, I’ve decided to expand it into its own thread.

I don't hate the idea, but I doubt they do a good job of it.

Hanna Barbara cartoons exist in an interesting place. The properties are all much beloved, but nobody's going to claim they were some of the best cartoons ever. We've seen them all ruined to various degrees over the decades, so really they've got brand recognition and nothing at all to lose. And the concept of a shared universe is nothing new to them either. That's pretty much the whole deal with Wacky Races. The Flintstones have met the Jetsons. There was Yogi's Ark Lark (Like I said. Ruined to various degrees already). Heck, let 'em try. Maybe they can make me care about these properties in an unironic way for a while.

I agree with Pak. My biggest concern is the live action/CGI hybrid direction, as that seems to be a curse with so many of them already having been terrible.
One of the defining things about Hanna Barbara cartoons is the art style. So making them live action, or even a completely CGI movie, would go against that. I would rather see them 2D animated.

I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything but.... some things are best suited for the TV set.

Or comics.  DC has been doing some weird bizarro takes on the characters in the last few years, some of them being very clever and fun, such as Snaggletooth as a gay playwright in the 50's and more social commentary-centric Flintstones.  It's weird stuff, but it mostly looks good to me.  They also did some weird Looney Tunes/DC crossover books, including a Batman Vs. Elmer Fudd noir tale.

I must confess I'm a little disappointed. Why? Well I was expecting CARTOON Elmer Fudd.
