Title: General MST3k News
Post by: Johnny Unusual on March 15, 2018, 04:26:04 PM
For news not big enough for it's own thread.  Here's some: Netflix swapped out it's classic MST3k episodes.

I wonder if that's just in the US or internationally.  I'll find out tonight, as I tend to watch classic MST3k piecemeal before bed with a late night snack.

Nice to see a change, but the "new" Netflix episodes are all episodes that repeat often on Pluto TV. While Netflix has the advantage over Pluto TV of not having commercials, I watch a lot of MST3K and Rifftrax on Pluto TV (and also Rifftrax on Twitch) just because I sometimes like having episodes picked for me and being somewhat surprised by what comes on next (and the commercials are actually kind of nice if you're doing other things around the house while watching because they give you a break and don't require 100% of your attention for an hour and half straight to catch an entire show) Glad for folks that maybe just got into MST3K due to Season 11 and Netflix though.

I've watched a few of these classic MST3k eps just added to Netflix as "season 2". Based on how Netflix rolled out MST3k season 11 last year, I'm optimistic season 12 is due out soon. Last year, Netflix added the first batch of classics ("season 1") around mid march, about a month before the new season was released. So maybe we're just a few weeks from more MST3k.

They've already announced the line up for April, and it's not there: https://news.avclub.com/heres-whats-coming-to-and-leaving-from-netflix-in-apr-1823918850

But maybe May?

I knew the writing was underway (done?) but I hadn't heard they'd been filming?

Yeah Season 12 is a long way off yet, maybe late this year.

I think if there were an announce date for Season 12, we'd know by now.

Or even an announcement that it's filming.

Yeah, in a recent podcast Jonah said they haven’t started filming yet. Then there’s the long editing process and the month of quality approval Netflix has.

I’d be shocked if we had it sooner than Turkey day.

Fortunately, I have saintly patience when it comes to these things. It took 17 years for a new season of MST3K to come back, so I guess waiting another year or so won't be bad…

Don't rush them. They really need to take their time.

I agree. While I did really enjoy Season 11, they need to get their pacing a little better.

Well, besides pacing they need to have some character development. Tough to do when everything except the riffing was shot in a day. But I'm guessing Season 12 will have a similar abbreviated shooting schedule, Hopefully some more thought will be put into host segments this time around though and "cameos" kept to a minimum or eliminated.

Got a totally unexpected email announcing that Season 11 is going to be sold here on the Rifftrax site starting April 11. As a backer who already has HD downloads and a DVD set, it's not something I'm interested in other than the fact I'm glad to see the relationship between Shout! and Rifftrax to continue on obviously good terms. Wish it would lead to more Film Crew episodes, but understand that ship has likely sailed.

Film Crew was more or less a dry run for Rifftrax anyway, so spiritually you basically got it.

So MST3K Season 11 is now available for sale through Rifftrax.com. AND They're selling the "We Brought Back MST3K" documentary that was previously exclusive to kickstarter backers.

I have the backer set (got the DVDs because I always rip them to iso and Bluray isos are huge and I already had HD mp4s), but assumed the recently recently released commercially available Bluray/DVD sets were exactly the same as the backer sets. Was the "We Brought Back" documentary not on those sets, and if not, were there any other differences?

If I understand correctly, the Shout Factory set includes everything but the bonus disk.

Looking the Season 11 set up on the Shout! Factory site, the "We Brought Back" documentary is listed as a bonus- although that's the only bonus video listed.

NEWS ABOUT SEASON 12 -- I won't promise dates and risk missing them, but I'm *hopeful* that we'll have some news about what's going on in the next week or so. There's stuff we're waiting for legal clearance to share, but we'll tell you as soon as we can. The good news is, it's well into development, and is shooting this summer!

So last season they shot the host segments in late September and the show released the following April. Does this mean we can expect the release date to be about January/February?

I'd guess that Joel with announce when Season 12 will hit Netflix during this year's Turkey Day marathon. My other hope for Turkey Day would be that we'd get "in character" host segments, but I highly doubt we will.

Reptilicus premiered in Feb, and If I’m remembering right the rest of the episodes were turned in around that time. If you use the Sept-Feb timeline it seems like a November premiere would be possible.

I'm still betting on Season 12 not coming out until 2019 as doing it like they did Season 11 seems like it could still take a good 4 to 6 months to complete.
My understanding of Season 11 (and I'm probably wrong on some of this) was that most of the writing was done in advance but remotely, the mad segments were shot in a day with limited takes due to time considerations, host segments with Jonah and the bots were shot in a day or two, cameo segments done when cameo stars were available, riffing done over the course of about a month, then a lot of post production/puppet/special effects work, and then a month of Netflix quality testing.
Nothing wrong with it the way it was done really, but it's still time consuming, results in things like the bubble effect having to be used to cover mistakes, and it's just not the same as having a tight nit group working together, seeing each other every day, and putting out 1 episode a week over the course of a season and adjusting things throughout based on feedback regarding what worked and what didn't.
Doing it the way it's being done is what it is and I hope/expect to see some improvement over Season 11, but I'm still skeptical we'll get any episode I'll add to my list of all time favorites. Hope I'm wrong.

Most of the writing staff is in LA now, so that obstacle should be no more.

If that's true, I hope they take more days for Mads and SoL filming. That bubble effect to cover up edits was sloppy and jarring.

There's a preview available for the new MST3K comic.

To get access to the secret backer preview pages, there are a few simple steps:

First, visit this page.
Create or sign in to your free Dark Horse Digital account.
Enter the redemption code BUBBULATR.
Start reading!

This info from the Kickstarter update.

I'm not going to bother downloading the preview because the single page of riffed comic Joel posted sold me, and I want just read the whole thing rather than a preview.
